This is an engine, right?

Code: [Select]
Fool's Gold, Pawn, Market Square, Masquerade, Scheme, Conspirator, Taxman, Throne Room, Venture, Witch

I'm pretty sure the engine was strong enough here despite the poor draw and TR as the only village. Also, the curses didn't seem to slow him down as much as I hoped they would. By the end of the game he still had 5 or 6 and was still producing a good amount of money. I think I could've picked up a couple more witches and schemes. For some reason I wasn't even thinking about draw as much as linking conspirators even though it's a colony/platinum game. When I started stalling I realized my mistake.

My questions are 1) would you go for the engine here? and 2) if yes, how would you have gone about building it? Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry for posting a game that I won in this forum but I know I can always do better win or lose and I value your opinions. If you feel this is inappropriate I can take it down.

EDIT#2: I'm also sorry for being computer illiterate but can someone tell me how to post the cards here and also how to get a link to color coded logs? I just copy and post the link that shows up after the game. Thanks!

Engine is the correct call. It is a long game, but most of your purchases looked reasonable to me. The turn 4 Throne Room could be questionable, maybe should be a Masqerade or second Witch. One thing to consider in a Conspirator deck with weak draw is that Gold becomes a weak card (it is a dead card for drawing your deck). I'm not sure you want any here, although one is probably okay. I certainly wouldn't try to activate the Market Square reaction, they are still very useful here for +buy and Conspirator chains though.

Another thing to think about: once you see that your opponent is not building an engine (and is even ignoring Witch entirely) you should give preference to Masquerade plays over Witch at the start of the game. So Throne Room the Masquerade if you have a choice between it and Witch, play Masquerade over Witch. Trash your deck down quickly, then you will be able to draw your deck more consistently, and you will end up putting the Curses in your opponent's deck faster, while you also decrease the chance that he will pass you Curses with your Masquerade plays. I am not 100% sure on this piece of advice, but I think it could be correct, and it seems interesting to me since people usually try to play their Witches as early as possible.

Thank you. Sometimes the most obvious things need to be pointed out before you can truly absorb them. Masquerade  before witch makes a lot of sense. I got the gold because I felt like I wasn't going to get to platinum without it. But with sufficient early trashing (more masquerade plays) and conspirators that probably wouldnt've been a problem.

Is this still an engine board if you don't have Colonies?  Would Masquerade+Market Square and money be able to get too many Provinces too quickly?

On turn 4 you play the witch so it misses the reshuffle, which wouldn't have happened if you'd taken action+coin with the pawn. Then on turn 5 you miss a chance to draw a card with the pawn, meaning your bad hand is reshuffled into the deck. Along with your bad draw on turn 3, those card plays on turns 4 and 5 set you back a long way.

On turn 4 I was still expecting him to buy a witch or two and wanted to curse him as much as I could but you're right, having the witch in the shuffle would've been better. On turn 5 I bought the masquerade and drew it right away. You think it would've been better to let it miss the shuffle?

His point is that you can play the witch and still keep it in the shuffle, by playing the pawn for action+coin instead of card+action. And on turn 5 you had 5 fairly awful cards in your hand; making them all miss the shuffle might be more valuable than getting your Masquerade shuffled in right away.

Yes. I think you could also change the order of some of your buys in setting up the engine. Scheme is helpful to set up the extra actions from thrones. Your market square could come later when you want a controlled expansion of your deck. Maybe you don't need the second witch and the burden it puts on your +actions.

Ok cool. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I realized near the end that schemes would've been awesome but it was a little late. Thanks for all the feedback! I'll play this board again tonight with a couple adjustments and we'll see how it goes.

EDIT: I don't know what I was thinking on turn 4, that witch missing the reshuffle was pretty obvious.

I haven't seen masque+market square in action but this definitely looks like an engine to me.  Masque is decent trashing, and with witch to slow the money player and tr/conspirator as payload I don't see how the engine has any real competition.  Everything is there: buy, junking attack, trashing, with throne room and scheme as icing on the cake.  The draw is weak but workable, esp with the throne rooms.
