Tournament size and time length

How big were you guys planning this tournament to be and how long should people plan to be in it for? I don't think it'll be an issue for me, but if someone is planning to travel they might need to take that into account when registering.

I ask because with the numbers of registrants at this point if there's a week for each match this might be a month and a half long tournament (or longer).

I'd hate to cut off registration less than a day into registering.  So it looks like if we cap it we'll cap it at 256.

It's unfortunate that it'll take this long, but it seems like the only fair way to register entrants is to be overinclusive rather than underinclusive.

I expect it to become even longer since there is christmas and holiday time ahead. Which is also why I hesitate to register, because I possibly won't be available for a week or more during December.

Me too for the same reasons. But I take this tournament as a good sign. It seems that Isotropic will be available at least the next two months ;-)

I think these are pretty valid concerns.  Would it make sense to extend one round (the round that lasts from Dec 26 to Jan 2) for two weeks instead of 1?  Or should I extend the one before that too (the round from Dec 19 to Dec 26).

Imo a match takes about 1 hour, never more than 2. To find 2 hours within a week should not be such a problem, even in Christmas time. If extentions are really needed, then only for the second week (26 Dec. to 2 Jan.).

Maybe you solve it all at once by extending the week from the 19th to the 2nd?

Probably it is not so difficult to find 2 hours where you have time, but you need to find a time where two people from possibly different time-zones have time. Actually that might be easier in holiday time, it was not a real pain in the current tournament, but you definitely see that there's often not much of a window when two people with 6-8hours time difference want to play after work, and want to go to work the next day.  And if you then add some extra restrictions due to holidays, it's not getting easier.
But I think the hugher problem might not to find the time, but to find a network when you are not at home, especially if you are in a foreign country (which can happen quite easily in europe).

It looks like we'll need about 8 rounds to decide a champion.

Here are the possible schedules:
Code: [Select]
28-Nov 5-Dec Round 1
5-Dec 12-Dec Round 2
12-Dec 19-Dec Round 3
19-Dec 26-Dec Round 4
26-Dec 2-Jan Round of 16
2-Jan 9-Jan Quarterfinal
9-Jan 16-Jan Semifinal
16-Jan 23-Jan Final

Code: [Select]
28-Nov 5-Dec Round 1
5-Dec 12-Dec Round 2
12-Dec 19-Dec Round 3
19-Dec 26-Dec Round 4
**26-Dec 9-Jan Round of 16**
9-Jan 16-Jan Quarterfinal
16-Jan 23-Jan Semifinal
23-Jan 30-Jan Final

Code: [Select]
28-Nov 5-Dec Round 1
5-Dec 12-Dec Round 2
12-Dec 19-Dec Round 3
**19-Dec 9-Jan Round 4**
9-Jan 16-Jan Round of 16
16-Jan 23-Jan Quarterfinal
23-Jan 30-Jan Semifinal
30-Jan 6-Feb Final

I'll put up a poll.

You may want to edit the first post in the registration thread, as we're above 240 now (assuming no one double-posted in there).

I think I'll actually soft cap it at 246, and then still accept registrations, but let anyone level 30+ sub in.  If there aren't enough level 30+'s, then whoever posts gets it, and if there are more than enough, then they get in in rank order.  Does that sound fair?

Seems reasonable.  I suspect 30-plusses who are interested probably already are signed up, but we can't be sure.

I have a very important question:

Who is making the BGG microbadge for this tournament?

Now that you say it, I think there is room for both.
