def 4 - 1 Daimun

1:0 fast trashing game with Trading Post and Apprentice were more luck was on my side
2:0 lucky early Possession, which didn't really help since my opponent nicely made it useless by rushing victory cards, but this way I got enough time to get 9 Hunting Parties and a few Golems.
3:0 Both sides choosing Masquerade over Ambassador
3:1 Better deck management by Daimun here in an cantrip-heavy game with discard-drawers and Menagerie being the important cards.

4:1 - I'm dumb and closed the window without copying the gamelog. I'm choosing Masquerade again over the too slow (they worked, but too late) Apothecaries here. Can I edit later on when councilroom updates?

Thanks for playing, Daimun. Maybe until next year?!

Mean Mr Mustard wins 4-1 over Jesse James

It has been about a month since I have played Dominion with any gusto, so I made sure to get some practice reps in.  Fortunately the fresh eyes helped and I played just about my best form yesterday, going 18-9.  My matches against Jesse James were marked by a lack of stupid errors or gross oversights.  Jesse had a clean go of it as well, but as he admitted to me he is a relatively new player of three months who in hindsight should probably have countered or mirrored my key attacks that, in my opinion, decided this match.

<a href=http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-192301-8ecd16ff.html>#1 Jesse James: 40 points (6 Provinces, 2 Duchies, 2 Estates, and 4 Curses); 29 turns
             opening: Silver / Potion
             [34 cards] 2 Familiars, 2 Grand Markets, 2 Markets, 1 Apprentice, 5 Coppers, 2 Silvers, 1 Potion, 5 Golds, 2 Estates, 2 Duchies, 6 Provinces, 4 Curses

#2 Mean Mr Mustard: resigned (1st); 29 turns
                 opening: Potion / Silver
                 [32 cards] 4 Apprentices, 1 Familiar, 1 Grand Market, 5 Coppers, 8 Silvers, 2 Golds, 2 Estates, 5 Duchies, 1 Province, 3 Curses</a>

It may have been bad form to resign our first game, but I knew I had zero chance of winning it.  I drew 2P three times, and I think that was enough in itself to lose this match.

<a href=http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-192942-f6ed1c0c.html>#1 Mean Mr Mustard: 28 points (4 Provinces, 3 Estates, 2 ▼, and a Curse); 21 turns
                 opening: Silver / Silver
                 [33 cards] 3 Bazaars, 2 Goons, 2 Mountebanks, 8 Coppers, 4 Silvers, 6 Golds, 3 Estates, 4 Provinces, 1 Curse

#2 Jesse James: resigned (1st); 21 turns
             opening: Potion / Silver
             [38 cards] 3 Goons, 2 Royal Seals, 2 Transmutes, 1 Bazaar, 1 Vault, 1 Woodcutter, 11 Coppers, 5 Silvers, 1 Potion, 2 Golds, 2 Estates, 2 Duchies, 5 Curses</a>

Jesse made a fatal error going after Transmute on a Mountebank board.

<a href=http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-193458-aa98b27b.html>#1 Mean Mr Mustard: 30 points (5 Provinces); 17 turns
                 opening: Ambassador / Ambassador
                 [16 cards] 2 Hunting Parties, 1 Ambassador, 1 Hoard, 3 Silvers, 4 Golds, 5 Provinces

#2 Jesse James: 26 points (3 Provinces, 5 Estates, and a Duchy); 17 turns
             opening: Duchess / Minion
             [34 cards] 3 Banks, 3 Minions, 2 Ambassadors, 1 Duchess, 1 Hoard, 11 Coppers, 2 Silvers, 2 Golds, 5 Estates, 1 Duchy, 3 Provinces</a>

5/2 opening crippled Jesse.

<a href=http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-194716-7f81f5a6.html>#1 Mean Mr Mustard: 83 points (8 Colonies and 3 Estates); 18 turns
                 opening: Silver / Moneylender
                 [30 cards] 5 Laboratories, 5 Peddlers, 3 Grand Markets, 1 Caravan, 1 Festival, 1 Militia, 1 Moneylender, 1 Silver, 1 Platinum, 3 Estates, 8 Colonies

#2 Jesse James: 26 points (2 Provinces, 2 Duchies, 2 Tunnels, and 4 Estates); 18 turns
             opening: nothing / Treasury
             [33 cards] 5 Peddlers, 4 Grand Markets, 3 Festivals, 2 Laboratories, 2 Tunnels, 1 Moneylender, 1 Treasury, 4 Coppers, 3 Golds, 4 Estates, 2 Duchies, 2 Provinces</a>

If any of you could build a better engine than this with these cards, I expect I'll lose to you.  The Militia was a huge factor.

<a href=http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-195806-5da5f52a.html>#1 Mean Mr Mustard: 37 points (6 Provinces and an Estate); 15 turns
                 opening: Silver / Masquerade
                 [20 cards] 3 Ventures, 1 Masquerade, 4 Coppers, 1 Silver, 4 Golds, 1 Estate, 6 Provinces

#2 Jesse James: 21 points (2 Provinces, 2 Duchies, and 3 Estates); 15 turns
             opening: Crossroads / Silver
             [26 cards] 3 Crossroads, 2 Margraves, 1 Masquerade, 6 Coppers, 3 Silvers, 4 Golds, 3 Estates, 2 Duchies, 2 Provinces
</a>

By this point in our match, I had recognized that my opponent wasn't a studied Dominion player, so I saw no reason to not keep this one simple.  I liked the Venture at $5 as a component of a Masq/bm deck and it indeed worked.

To my opponent: It was lucky for me that I discovered this game a couple of years before you did.  You have your feet firmly on a learning path that the best players in this tournament all have had to walk.

Gardens Division: Bulb (32) d. warbaker (33), 4-2

Game 1: warbaker 41, Bulb 35

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/01/game-20111201-173042-cd13b2d0.html

We both have the same strategy (CR/Duke).  I buy two estates on turn 17, right before his Council Room gives him the only Province buy (and ultimately the difference in the game).  Estates running out ends the game a few turns later.

Game 2: Bulb 37, warbaker 35

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/01/game-20111201-175149-f059878d.html

We both went Golem/Tunnel, though I also picked up 5 Cartographers to his 0, allowing me to pick up 8 Golds to his 5.  He accidentally ended the game on a loss, but my next hand would've given me the win anyway.

Game 3: Bulb 42, warbaker 33

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/01/game-20111201-180720-14d02262.html

Tournament game... I got some lucky draws.  Yawn.  (That "Yawn" is not directed at warbaker, just the fact that I hate Tournament games.)

Game 4: warbaker 73, Bulb 55

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/01/game-20111201-181953-a8489d19.html

I won the Familiar battle, and thought Ventures and Golems would help me cycle my deck faster, but he used Mine to get more Platinums, and then (GASP!) Adventurer (!?!?) gives him enough $ to buy the last Colony.

Game 5: Bulb 29, warbaker 18

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/01/game-20111201-182852-2be8e771.html

Familiars split the Curses 5-5.  M 4-2 Caravan advantage let me get a Province on my last 5 turns for the win.

Game 6: Bulb 34, warbaker 21

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/01/game-20111201-184001-c06d19e9.html

This game could've gone either way.  I got the perfect hand on my last turn - KC, KC, HP, letting me draw my deck and then play my Baron three times.

Thanks to warbaker for a great (and fast!) series.

Here's the last game of my match from last night, not that anyone will care too much: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-193559-64a1045b.html
During the game I felt like I was getting really bad luck by not connecting my remake with an estate until... turn 15. But oh well.

Gardens division, adf beats ipnotaizig for 4-2.

Great games, lots of fun.
Good luck to my opponent in the rest of the tournament.

I've had many great games, but this was about the most fun with Dominion I've had so far. I say the more tournaments like these you hold, the merrier.

Thank you!

Robz888 defeats Wingnut 4-2-1 in Gardens 31-34 match. Sadly for me I must say.
Thanks to Wingnut for a terrific match. We had some of the most intense, nailbiting games I've ever played.

His recap of our series was top-notch. The game I really recommend checking out was our Game 4: http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111130-191727-25ddcaa8.html

I've never been a fan of Trader, but it seems like a good thing to pick up in a Sea Hag game. We each get 1, and start Hagging pretty constantly (Inns sped up the rate we both play it). Somehow, those two Traders manage to block each other's Sea Hags almost every time. We only hand out a combined 4 curses the whole game. And as it turned out, just one additional successful Sea Hagging would have decided the game, as it ended in a Draw.

Witch, Round 2: Hurr 4 - 3 Schneau

Very close match, I didn't expect to sweat so much this early! We had pretty straightforward kingdoms. Schneau made a couple big mistakes in game 1, but went on the play a very solid game, splitting the rest of the series with me. I, on the other hand, decided to waver between brilliant (game 2) and terrible (game 6), barely squeaking by.

Wrapping up my series against ruinmysleep, I ended up winning 4-0.

I'll quote the report from the first two games here:

ruinmysleep (Gardens seed 48) and I (seed 17) played the first two games of our tourney yesterday, then had to adjourn until Friday, mostly because I was an inadvertent jerk and showed up 25 minutes late when I thought I was showing up 5 minutes early.

Here are the two game logs so far, both of which contained a lot of tactical play and came down to a single buy in the end.

Game 1: rspeer 37 - ruinmysleep 36. This game was largely defined by Sea Hag, but we both opened Trading Post / Cellar after some deliberation. The main difference in our decks was that ruinmysleep went for Golems and bought two of them, while I bought two more Golds than he did.

In the end, we both had thoroughly clogged decks, with Duchies and Curses gone from the supply, and an approximately tied score. One might say that ruinmysleep fell victim to the little-known "penultimate Estate rule", letting me buy the last Estate to win by one point. But that's not entirely true, because he really needed that penultimate estate to tie the score, and it may very well have been true that there was a higher probability of me whiffing and failing to get $2 than there was of him getting $8.

Game 2: ruinmysleep 59 - rspeer 64. This was a very tense Colony game where 7 of the kingdom cards cost $5. The board was not conducive to mega-combos, but it did have Hunting Party to at least draw mega-hands before ending it with a terminal.

We both opened suboptimally in a way. I believed I saw the opportunity for an IGG rush, though its counter (Trader) was on the board; I decided that Trader was irrelevant because it was a colony game and Ghost Ship would be a far better terminal to have. But then again, letting someone get away with an IGG rush makes Colony itself irrelevant, and Trader doesn't need to be played to stop IGG.

So I opened IGG/Haven. He opened Contraband/Haven. Contraband was probably ruinmysleep's downfall; it let him have his choice of the $5s often, but I could deny him gold, platinum, and large victory cards for quite a while, especially because Hunting Party would basically reveal how much money he could spend. Hunting Party likes to have +buys with it, and Contraband was the only +buy, but man, Contraband sure doesn't like Hunting Party. And yet this didn't slow him down as much as you would think.

He picked Trader (and Haven) on his Contraband turn despite my convoluted rationalizations, so I had to give up on the IGG rush after a single IGG. 23 Hunting Party and Ghost Ship-ful turns later, his Contraband let me deny him the Province he would need to win, and I took it instead.

I'm happy to be up 2-0 so far, but neither of these games was an easy win. To be continued...

Game 3: rspeer 34 - ruinmysleep 22. I randomly got the first-player advantage back, but it didn't matter. I bought two Jacks and turned off all creative thought, ruinmysleep went for Golem, take a guess at how the rest of the game played out.

Game 4: ruinmysleep 16 - rspeer 47. The series ends with a combo-ful board. How should I put this: ruinmysleep opened Woodcutter/Spy, which is on the worst openings list and perhaps demonstrates the importance of adequate sleep to Dominion. I took my time building a steamroller made of Bazaar, Margrave, Market, Minion, and King's Court that got me 7 of the provinces.

ruinmysleep was a great sport through it all. Thanks for the games.

Gardens Division: (29-36) glasser def. dnkywin (4-2)

Befitting the tournament divisions, our first three games ended up coincidentally being chapel/gardens/witch! No thief, though. =(

dnkywin 33 - glasser 25
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/02/game-20111202-163050-46e74506.html
chapel/conspirator/cartographer/pawn. glasser's engine failed for just one turn (14) during
the greening phase, and that decided it.

glasser 34 - dnkywin 29
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/02/game-20111202-163741-bf38a9ca.html
Crazy gardens/vineyard/ironworks/council room game. Both of us got to exactly 40 cards, and dnkywin was up 5-3 on Gardens... but despite the fact that dnkywin's Vineyards were worth 5 to glasser's 4, the 4-1 split on Vineyards decided the game. Amusing feature: Moats ran out (with dnkywin gaining 9, mostly with Ironworks) but never blocked a single attack (turned out Jester was barely worth wasting an action on, despite its potential synergy with gardens/vineyard) and were only played once; 5 Jacks were bought and never played.

glasser 57 - dnkywin 17
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/02/game-20111202-165246-b4e57ebf.html
witch (on turn 2, thanks to nomad camp) + city (+ moneylender and a bit of saboteur) beats
loan + tunnel.  Maybe loan + tunnel would have worked better in a Province game?

glasser 44 - dnkywin 36
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/02/game-20111202-170832-89cb7b99.html
Duke/remodel dominated. We both ended up going that route, but dnkywin started out with alchemy for a few turns and I think that made the difference. This game also had Duchess, and maybe it would have been a good idea to gain them with duchies to make that be the third pile to end? dnkywin also tried some desperation swindling at the end (and managed to trash one of glasser's dukes), but the difference was too great for dnkywin to overcome.

dnkywin 40 - dnkywin 32
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/02/game-20111202-171650-ec61d44e.html
Even a 5/2 split with Vault and decent $2s (Hamlet and Haven) didn't let glasser win this Colony game. Probably mostly because he got distracted from Colonies by Provinces.

glasser 33 - dnkywin 28
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/02/game-20111202-172429-bec68401.html
Ambassador game gets decided by nobles. Worker's Village helps. glasser draws out his deck for the only time on his last turn to clinch the series.

glasser says: fun games with lots of "multiple potential strategies", and dnkywin was a pleasure to play with!

A good set of games with me(NinjaBus) and Djinncito here:

Chapel Division: Ninjabus vs. Djinncito
Final Results were 4-2 NinjaBus, here's how each game played out.

Game 1: NinjaBus 9, Djinncito(resigned)
Shuffles and swindling came out in my favor, and Djinn resigned when I ended up with a healthy money lead.
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-183709-3237f2bd.html

Game 2: Djinncito 68, NinjaBus 51
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-185126-1fcf3b87.html
Djinn played a governor / militia combo which was supported by a Golem. I went for golds and platinums, but it turned out that Djinn's strong card draw paired with keeping me at a starting hand of 3 worked out in the end.

Game 3: Djinncito 48, NinjaBus 48
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-190155-a3a435ea.html
A fairly tame game with Dukes and Hoard as the main cards, looking back on it I would have been better served taking a duchy lead rather than going for provinces earlier, I ended up losing by turn order at the end in part due to points from dukes.

Game 4: NinjaBus 38, Djinncito(resigned)
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-191427-ced33cd4.html
An ambassador game, and a good example of why one should double up on ambassadors or fall behind. At the end of the game I had 6 of the provinces and had gifted away nearly all of my junk cards. Has anybody else used border village to pick up an ambassador?

Game 5: NinjaBus 28, Djinncito 25
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111201-192320-d7cde279.html
A close game, I'm not sure how this would play out in simulation, but it'd be interesting to try. I played big money masquerade, Djinncito opened with masq/spice merchant instead for faster trashing. Would it be risky since you'd end up with not enough junk cards to trade back?

Edit: I just ran it, and assuming Geronimo's dominino simulator is fairly sensible with masqurade and spice merchant (does it trade away the spice merchant when coppers are low? ever?) solo masq wins 62% of the time. It's worth noting that spice merchant /masq's chances are improved by venture(but not enough to win), probably because that set will tend to hit 5 more than 6 in the first few turns, and venture gets much better when it has less coppers to hit.

Djinncito, you'd probably be kicking yourself if you saw the hand I had when you ended the game. :P This easily could have gone either way.

The possible collision of Spice Merchant when playing Masquerade will have a big impact on the win rate. The simulator will only use the drawing function of Spice Merchant and not pass it with Masquerade when Coppers are running low so the results will not be accurate. I'd still estimate that it's better to go for the simple plan (Silver), but the presence of Venture will make it close.

In "Thief" division, matignon (12) wins against Joseph2302 (53) 4-0

Obviously, I'm a bit noobish and forgot to record the gamelog. Thought it was put instantly on councilroom... I'll edit this post when I'll get those.

Some close games and the score is pretty harsh on Joseph2302. Really, those games could have gone either way. Thanks for the games, and thanks for the tournament, lots of fun.

In a very close series full of very close games, Voltgloss (48) defeated dghunter79 (17) 4-3 in the Thief Division.  I'll post the game logs and recaps once they hit Council Room.

Thanks very much, dghunter79, for all the great games.  Looking forward to matching you again on Iso in the future!  :)

Rod- wins vs Caprica(Gardens) 4-3

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/03/game-20111203-081726-141fe9a1.html
Generic torturer game, worsened by 5-2 vs 4-3 split.  Went long due to vineyards/gardens/fairgrounds extra vps.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/03/game-20111203-082647-84551d56.html
Oasis+Minion combo seems to be favored over minion+money, even though I failed to realize how little time I had spare and decided to go for possession (to no avail).

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/03/game-20111203-083151-7fd6c612.html
Hunting party party!  Lookout cleared caprica's estates, which was enough to make hunting parties more effective.

Fairly mirrored KC+Governor/Conspirator decks, but I got smoked by focusing on conspirators over governors; it was a 6/2 split except i managed to sneak in a province on Caprica's last turn via governor's remodel.

I thought blackmarket+scheme would be a great way to get me the goods from the black market...Variance disagreed.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/03/game-20111203-090025-c1a0ab39.html
Hamlet/watchtower managed to piledrive the peddlers by turn 8.
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/03/game-20111203-090911-4688a9e0.html
Tunnel/Navigator hit for me early and often, and even though smuggler managed to get caprica an even split on the tunnels, it was too late to catch up.

Fun games and a good opponent.

Witch Division:
Elyv(4) beats The Darce (61) 4-0

Thanks to The Darce for the games, and being gracious with a last-minute rescheduling(we were originally going to play Thursday evening, but I had something come up in the afternoon and we moved it to today).
