What is a forum game?

Not a joke.  How do you play, e.g., 7 wonders via forum, and what else happens here?

A moderator creates a spreadsheet containing the current game state and handles all random elements.

In the case of 7 wonders this means that you have a spreadsheet, where everyone's world wonder and the current buildings the player own are depicted. Then the moderator either creates a private sheet for every player or uses PMs to send the cards to the player.

if it wasn't clear, games are played over weeks or months, with players just popping in to take their turn. We don't all get together and play the game in one sitting like you would IRL.

We've played a large range of types of games here... new ones open up for signups every once in a while.

And then there's the mafia games. That's a whole section of forum games to itself, and if you go to that subforum there are some helpful stickied threads.

TL;DR Social deduction games like mafia or the resistance lead themselves particularly well to play-by-forum and we have a lot of fun with them. If you're interested, jump into something. People here are pretty helpful and friendly. The mafia folks even run special games just for newbies, or used to.

Did I misinterpret something or is the BSG game seriously closing in on about a year?  That is obviously an extreme case though ...

Thanks.  I guess I might have surmised as much, but the concept is new to me, and I wasn't sure.

best way to learn is to play.  Sudgy's Diffusion of Power mafia game seems like it is pretty new player friendly

Man. I had four strips of bacon yesterday. Was one automatically undercooked, one automatically overcooked? No, let's put a stop to that right here, all four strips were excellent.

I expected Through the Ages to take a year. I was way off.

My problem is that I errantly translated the amount of time a game takes IRL to an inflated number of turns. When the players can knock out a turn within a day or two, it's not too bad. A TtA game can be about 19-21 turns.

Turns out that these types of games translate pretty well to forum play since you're not expected to sit there without playing on your phone while the other three players process their turns.

Yes. I blame the mod, he's obviously not putting the effort into speeding people along.

(Although in reality it's gone on a well above average number of turns already. IIRC a human win averages around 35 turns, Cylon win somewhat less (perhaps ~30) and we're on turn 44. You can blame a variety of things for the long game - bad destination draws means the humans haven't won yet, a wide mix of crises and the like means everything is under pressure but nothing has caused the Cylons to win, and also lots of people have spent a lot of time in the brig)

I mean I think it must be cool!  To have a game go on so long.  It also sort of showcases the variety inherent; you can play a 1-day blitz game or commit to a year-long game with strangers that become friends.

Well, normal forum BSG doesn't even last anywhere near this long. Games over on BGG often finish within a month, the average is likely around 5 weeks or so.

It's really my fault for being such a terrible president, :)

I'm actually impressed that even as long as the game has gone we've only needed one replacement.

Oh, when I replaced in, I totally didn't catch up. I just went off of the current game state (both cylons were known when I replaced in, plus I barely know the rules anyway!)

I miss the Cosmic Encounter game.

I still haven't changed my avatar from that game.

Sadly, some games just peter out. To be fair, CE is kind of wonky as a forum game.

I'd play CE again! Now that I've played it IRL I get it a lot more.

What if we designed our own CE races like we do with mafia roles?

It could work ok, but there are 135 aliens in the most recently published edition alone! So there's a lot to explore even within the current world of cosmic.

Well, you could do it, but you shouldn't be able to get the role you designed, otherwise I'd make the Winners race with this text: You win.

Same, which is why I've offered to mod and not restart the game. I mean, uh, I've refreshed myself on the rules just in case players make any mistakes. Yep.
