I'm also considering getting some of the expansions - which do you recommend?  I was thinking of just getting the ones that add races/powers (Cursed, Grand Dames, Be Not Afraid), and possibly Underground.

I have underground; it's pretty cool.  The new powers and abilities seem more powerful than the original, but they're interesting.  It also introduces relics and places of power, which are special items you can uncover that give abilities (similar to racial abilities).  Those items and places can then be conquered by other players, so it becomes another consideration for how you expand.

My hesitance with Underground is that it seems more like a variant than an actual expansion.  How much room is there for mixing and matching races/powers from the original and Underground?

You can actually play the maps together and connect from the two through tunnels on mountain regions.  I think the website sells the tunnel icons separately, but you could make your own or use bottlecaps.  I've never actually played them both together.. I think there is a section in the rulebook that explains how the terrain types interact (I can check).  Also, some of the special abilities of Underground duplicate the racial abilities of the regular game (i.e., there is a Vampire special ability that mimics the Sorcerer's power, Immortal immitates Elves, etc.).  So you could draw Immortal Elves, which is kind of a wash, but, hey, you don't need to take them.

Going into decline still takes your entire turn, so you don't get a conquest phase.  At least that's how I'd interpret it.  Also agreed here: http://boardgames.stackexchange.com/questions/4539/playing-spirit-ghouls-in-decline and http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/666691/attack-and-decline-the-same-turn-ghouls.

See, I'm so used to Dominion where every single eventuality is accounted for in the provided FAQ, and failing that, the game creator lurks around the forums to keep us on the straight and narrow.

A game doesn't need a huge FAQ, but the SmallWorld rule book as some ambiguities in it. I think it passed like that because it's more of a casual game.

Small World has some weird interactions where you can have an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.

Here's a compiled FAQ on BGG: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/391216/what-we-know-so-far-clarification-of-rules

Well, I found this was a thing more with SW: Underground than the base game, because it has some items that give you weird bonuses. Probably you can find some examples in that FAQ: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?th=22605&start=0

Okay, that actually answered a lot of questions I was having.  It seems they'd rather tweak a race (turning Humans into "Wealthy" for Underground) rather than just not use them.

The odd thing is that when you mix SW and SW:U you can have some duplicate race/power combos that are useless, so you have to take some steps to make sure it works, but it's still fun.

By the way, anyone know anything about possible upcoming on-line/mobile device play?  I think it would make a pretty cool electronic game.

Oh no way, sweet!  When I originally checked they didn't have a mobile version.  I though it was still something in the pipeline.

Has anyone played the mobile app?  Some of the reviews say it's pretty buggy.

I've played the Steam version.  I like it.  Would be nice if they added Underground.

I have Android devices.  Anyone tried the Android implementation?

I have two more questions that aren't in the FAQ:

How do Shadow Mimes determine how many tokens they get?  From the Special Power they randomly get assigned, or the Special Power they switch into?

When passing over Cursed Homunculi, do you have to drop 3 Homunculus tokens onto them?

It should from the special power they switch.  From the rule book:

Quote
When picking a Race and Special Power
combo (p. 4), if you select the Shadow
Mimes you may immediately swap their
Special Power with the Special Power of
your choice, from among the 5 others
visible in the list of combos. You do not swap or pick up the
coins (if any) that may be on the Combo initially associated
with the Special Power you are mimicking. You only swap the
Special Power.

The word "immediately" implies you do it before anything else.  So, select Shadow Mimes (this part includes placing coins up to Shadow Mime if necessary), choose Special Power, then take race tokens.  Also from the rule book, on choosing races:

Quote
The player places his combo selection face up in front of him,
and picks a number of matching Race tokens in the removable
storage tray equal to the sum of the values indicated on the
Race banner and its associated Special Power badge.

So you take your tokens after you choose your combo.  Shadow Mime goes into effect before the combo is chosen.

No, just the usual one.
