Dominion General Discussion / Re: >2 Treasure Maps?
« on: June 24, 2011, 10:12:52 pm »
If a trash-for benefit card like Bishop, Salvager, or Apprentice is available, go nuts! Once you cash in one set, trash the extra treasure maps for VP, $, or card drawing.

Say what you will about potion costs, it's a very good thing that University cannot be used to gain more Universities.

Otherwise this would be insane.

Theoretically Apothecary works just as well as Scout here.

Jester. Revealing a Diadem. But there are no more diadems in the supply.

Vatican (Really big Chapel full of Bishops)

$7 Action

You may Trash up to Four cards from any player's hand, deck, or discard, or the supply. Gain VP equal to their cost.

These are fantastic.  It's fun not to have to worry about balance.

Master Tactician $7

Action - Duration

Trash your hand. Next Turn, draw your deck.

Palace $11

Pick an action card. Play it as many times as you like.

I think its overpowered. Think about trash-for benefit cards - Upgrade, Remake, Remodel, Expand, Apprentice, Salvager, Bishop - all of these would benefit greatly from a high cost card that you want to trash before the end of the game. And even without those, it's almost always going to be worth taking the negative VP. Like buying a single Possession or Goons in spite of an opponent's embargo.

Now if it was -2 vp, maybe leaving it in your deck would be a scary enough prospect, but I'd still consider it an overpowered card.

Generally if I'm going to quit because I'm getting my ass handed to me so much its not worth it, I'll say something along the lines of "You've got this one, mind if I resign?" That seems like the polite thing to do to me.

I always thought some kind of Shapeshifter or Master of Disguise card would be interesting - basically a card that, when you play it, can impersonate any cheap card in the supply. Maybe have it cost six and mimic any card costing up to four? I just think it could make for some interesting decks. I'm not sure if it should only work for action cards or if it could be a treasure as well. Making it usable as a reaction would probably be broken.

I used to really hate Goons and Minions for the same reason - I thought they forced you into a particular stratey any time they were on the board. I'm not a huge fan of boards that force a mirror match. Lately, though, I've found myself learning ways to counter Goons players without buying Goons, and I find the card annoys me a lot less. Same with the Minion.

I guess Saboteur is the most annoying card for me. I actually love Smugglers. I love the randomness it adds to the game.

I do have a feeling that some "cares-about-having-silver" card is coming. The weird option on trusty steed, some comments Donald X. made in the recent secret history about cards that were scrapped, Bureaucrat, Explorer (when do you NOT want to reveal the province? Why is it "may"), and a couple other things. Plus Silversmith just sounds cool, and I think it would be awesome.

In this thread, he mentions a moneylender that trashes silver as a card "no one was really interested in."

I'm a big fan. Ok, done being off-topic now.

This could combo brilliantly with trash-for-benefit cards, especially Forge. Also, Baron.

That is definitely an interesting concept. The only card that offers a similar effect right now I think is the reaction component of secret chamber - useful for countering thieves and pirate ships, mostly. I bet architect would be good in similar situations. Sea Hag, Bureaucrat, Rabble, and Spy are all cards that would make me wary of it though. Combo it with Scrying pool and a world of possibilities open up.

Slightly off topic - you're not the guy who runs rinkworks.com, are you?

I am probably the least math savvy person on these boards - I'm a former English/Theatre major in the process of applying for PhD programs in Literatiure. I was taking a year to make sure it was what I really wanted to do and now I'm going to try to leap into full time academia. I might end up taking another year though - right now I work in an awesome coffee shop and spend my off-time dancing, playing music in bars, and playing dominion. I also love super-complex fantasy flight games, when I can find people to play them with me.

My strategy with Horns of plenty in action heavy games usually goes like this:
1.Buy 1 Horn of plenty
2.Use it in the early game to gain one or two more
3.Trash them all at the end for whatever you can get - Duchies, Provinces, even Estates.
Alternately, if your engine relies on lots of three and four cards, it can help you build it up faster. But most of the time I think it's a pretty good source of last-minute tie-breaker points that your opponent can't mimic unless he or she has also been buying Horns of Plenty. I've won a few games that way.

Never gotten it UP TO ELEVEN though. That's impressive.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Pirate Ship in 3+ player games.

I like Pirate ship because it often makes big money not viable, which makes for more interesting games. The fear that your treasure will be trashed has lots of little effects on many different strategies.

Example of Ambassador as a counter, from this morning. My opponent gave me 8 curses with Familiar. Over the rest of the game, I gave six of them back, not to mention a crap ton of coppers.

Here's a related question - in a game with both Familiar and Sea Hag, when is it a good idea to open potion rather than Sea Hag and go for the Familiar? On the one hand, Sea Hag cripples your opponent early on, but on the other hand, Familiar is much more spammable and won't slow down your deck later on. Obviously which other alchemy cards are available and how many/ what type of villages are both factors to consider. Any thoughts?
