Dominion General Discussion / Re: How Many Possible Kingdoms?
« on: June 14, 2012, 01:58:07 am »
Just so WW doesn't feel all alone - I grew up in southern Arizona, and 25 is a very normal temperature for the thermostat. The electric company would encourage us to set it lower in the winter to conserve energy, but that is a seperate issue.
As to outdoor temperatures, 20-30 is very comfortable, in fact, 30 is as cool as it gets overnight for 5+ months of the year. 35-37 is warm, but we often have 100+ days in a year of highs over 37. 40-43 is where people start complaining about the heat.
On the flipside, 10 was considered pretty cool weather and time to don a sweater (or a jacket if you will be outdoors for long). Now that I live in the Seattle area (almost to the border with our Canadian friends), when the temperature hits 10 in April or so, its time for shorts, t-shirt and maybe some flip-flops/sandals.

Game Reports / Re: Drawing 5/2 with Young Witch/Tunnel
« on: June 12, 2012, 07:22:57 pm »
I hve a question for the forum about Ednever's fifth turn. The general consensus is to curse early and often. It is also generally accepted that trashing is good (especially with engine decks) and that building an economy to afford the $5+ cards is a good thing. Here, Ed chooses to Trader 2 estates into a silver and buy a bane/tunnel instead of using his young witch. His opponent had his bane in hand (did you guess that, Ed?), so the YW would not have cursed, but I am curious about the broader implications. If Ed had drawn YW, Trader, Silver, copper, estate (or something else similar) where he could still have been assured to buy the tunnel if he used the YW, would the trader be the right play? I suspect there will be varying opinions, but I would like to hear your reasoning as to which move is better. Thanks!

Dominion Articles / Re: Terminal Draw Big Money
« on: June 05, 2012, 07:15:00 pm »
Thanks for the article!! I have a question I hope you might be able to clarify for me. You indicate that you would like to have only a single envoy (because of the large draw), but you indicate that you usually want a second embassy. Both of these cards draw 5, so wouldn't that make collisions equally likely? Is it because with envoy your opponent gets to choose which card is discarded, leaving you with a dead card, whereas with embassy, you can choose to discard the dead action and keep your money?

Envoy
Envoy is the closest cousin of Smithy -- so close that it was cut from Intrigue due to the great similarity. So what is the difference? Envoy adds 4 cards to your hand instead of 3, and draws 5. Because it draws so many more cards, you really can't afford to add any terminal actions to your deck (i.e. no second Envoy). In the Envoy turn you see more than half your deck, so the probability of collision is higher than the probabilty of non-collision until your deck size is at least 19, at which point the game is probably already over. Although you can’t really add any other terminals to Envoy, it still ends up usually being better than Smithy because the greater cycling allows you to play your single Envoy more often.
...
Embassy
Embassy ends up working a lot like Vault, but without an explicit guarantee. Still, in 9 cards, you’d be hard pressed not to be able to hit $6. It also has a bit of Envoy to it, since it draws so many cards that it provides a huge amount of cycling to allow many plays off of few Embassies. Usually, you want 2 (and asap, since a collision is not that bad), with the first one taking priority over Gold if you didn’t open with another action card. The reason you take it ahead of Gold is that if you use your first Embassy to buy your first Gold, you’re more likely to quickly cycle it in than if you were to use your first Gold to buy your first Embassy. But if you have another action, you’re better off with the Gold, which doesn’t have problems with collision. Of course, since Embassy leads to a much higher probability of collision, you have to more picky with your opening terminal than you would be with Library or Vault. For example, Silver/Silver is probably going to be better than Navigator/Silver or Bishop/Silver.

If I may ask, why did you buy 2 coppers on your last turn? Admittedly, they would never come around to bite you, but I am curious if you see a benefit to buying them.

3) why wouldn't I be able to sign in with google on my home computer?

3. Um, you can't? I can.
Do you mean using you google account on the pc and ipod simultaneously? That is a cookies issue, I think. You can create a second sign-in or log in as a guest to play yourself or a friend in the room with you.

Help! / Re: hunting party+philosopher stone
« on: June 01, 2012, 06:45:14 pm »
It seems that he was pretty wise to not get money other than the coppers or vp other than estates or provinces to increase his chances of finding the philosopher stone. In the extreme case, if all he has is coppers, phil stones, estates, HP, and provinces, it seems that his HP would have even better odds. Do you think that the moat helps or hurts, overall? It seems to help him early to get enough $ to buy what he wants and there is a turn or two later where the moat gets him a lucky draw. Any thoughts?

Help! / Re: Tournament + stables/apprentice - shuffle luck?
« on: June 01, 2012, 04:47:29 pm »
That makes sense, thanks. I panicked and bought two late tournaments because my opponent was going at them pretty heavy. I can see your point that draw is more important at that point - use apprentice to deliberately draw the whole deck (or enough of it) to raise your chances of tourney/province colliding as opposed to loading up your deck with tourneys in the hope they would collide. That seems a pretty solid lesson that I will try to be more aware of. Thanks!

Help! / Tournament + stables/apprentice - shuffle luck?
« on: June 01, 2012, 03:43:54 pm »
Hi all - could I get your opinions on this game? I know we aren't supposed to post wins, but I think I lucked into this one. The game was essentially a mirror match - tourneys with a bit of gentle +cards.
I have 2 basic questions for you:
1) Did I win this solely on shuffle luck?
2) Was there a better strategy? I considered doing something with venture + tunnel (seemed too slow). Caravan seemed like it would be too slow.

Game Reports / Re: best adventurer ever

Nice work! I tried to build an economy around adventurer/tunnel once, but I either didn't execute it correctly, or it just wasn't fast enough for the board because when the golds finally started showing up in my hand, it was too little too late.

Game Reports / Re: Possible CR Bug + Questions about a pin
« on: May 31, 2012, 02:45:22 pm »
I am curious about that pin. All of the other pins that I can think of (am I completely missing something?) destroy the other players' hand, but leave you with some ability to progress the game. As it was, O and his opponent had just about no economy at the end of the game, and if his opponent hadn't resigned, they would have gone back and forth until three piles of choice were emptied and, presumably, O would have been able to buy the last estate as the last of the three piles on his last turn (with some advance planning). But after the buzz of the pin has worn off, what a tedious game that would be! I guess forcing your oponent to resign and getting the win that way would be fun, too....

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Card Idea: Supply Trasher
« on: May 31, 2012, 12:28:31 pm »
A bit tangential, but this reminds me of a thought I had that watchtower might see an increased use of its ability to trash a gained card in conjunction with Dark Ages. If trashing/trashed cards are important, there may be situations where the best move is to buy a card and send it straight to the trash with Watchtower.

Help! / Re: Thief

1) Multiplayer
2) Against Mint-FG or other types of Fools Gold Games
3) ??

If by "multiplayer" you mean "multiplayer Gardens games" in particular, then I mostly agree- in non-Gardens setups not even 4p can salvage the Thief.

Thief may not be strong for any one individual in 3p/4p games, but if multiple people are buying multiple copies of thief (and you don't), you may find that your buying power is leached faster than you can resupply it. Ironically, this is something that I learned from the horrible playing style of the AI in the ipod/ipad app.

oy, this is a bit of a sore subject here. i had a level 12 opponent use the IW/GH/scout combo to pull 7 provinces in 17 turns against me yesterday.  loan and crossroads did help of course. game log here.

I think your link leads to jonts26's intro, not to a game log.
Must've been something wrong on my end.

It looks like you might get enough interest to split the pools. If you do, I would like to be in; otherwise, I won't take up a spot a better player would enjoy.

I sure hope nothing costs $1! That would make a number of potential ways for trashing estates/coppers more risky or at least not as helpful when those cards are in the supply. I recall, someone, in the commentaries Donald wrote about the other expansions that he deliberately said "gain a card costing exactly $1 more" so that you wouldn't end up drawing curses when you trash coppers or something to that extent.

Edit: it would be nice if I could spell.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120523-201647-5a6d87f2.html

Here is a game I played the other night with the Wife. Neither of us are awesome players, yet, but it is an interesting combination of a torturer engine and ambassador. It certainly took away the sting of being tortured when I had confidence that I could pass the curse along. We were in similar situations, but since my torturer chain got up and running better/faster, she was left eating curses (and not too happy after the game, mind).

So to the question of when to pick up curses, if it won't slow you down, but further impedes the other guy, it seems like good timing, though perhaps not best suited for making friends. :)

Does that then mean that in a BM + X game, you would buy one or two more wharfs (wharves?) than you would smithys?

Isn't Feast a card that upgrades itself?

I thought I read in Donald's explanation of the card origins that Feast had come from another deck where he was trying to do "one-shot" cards. This sounds to be along those lines - trash this card, gain a different card. Trash that card, gain a third, ultra-powerful card, or something like that.
