Dominion General Discussion / Re: Are Advisor and Soothsayer Related?
« on: October 02, 2013, 06:44:22 pm »
Nah, they aren't related - it's the same person. The foolhardy ruler has employed a soothsayer as his advisor, but since the world is prejudiced, she has to dress as a man in court.

Bots often make decisions that seem boneheaded but change the shape of the game considerably (e.g. overbuying militia), and learning how to react to that kind of thing is good practice.

Yeah, typical bot-learned strategies that I see a lot of are pile-driving militia, feast or other low cost actions when going for a simple BM+X strategy will be faster (even if being militia'd)... bots don't teach you some key base strategies like workshop + gardens, or even the power of chapel.
(Just won a base game yesterday 37-0 opening chapel/remodel, I felt bad but I can't play better players due to the combination of them all having autokick and my rating being f'd over by Goko, has taken over a week to recover half my rating)

The problem with learning to react to dumb strategies is that it often doesn't teach you how to react to good ones.

I'd agree that it helps a little bit with 3-4 player games, because when several people start doing an inferior strategy it can make better strategies not work, but there are key concepts that you have to play out with people. (In fact, doing so helps you considerably, after about 3-4 games, the people I introduce to dominion can beat most of the bots.)

It is exactly these very simple, easily programmable, strategies that the Bots do as a good baseline and where they can be actually useful to practice against. If you want to hone your Beggar-Gardens mirror skills, the Bots are a good baseline.
Sometimes, they are just plain stupid, though.

Just a quick rules check (I haven't read the log to see if it came up) - if I overpay for Dr. With Trader in hand, I can get the overbuy benefit (when buy) and then Trade the Dr. for a Silver (when would gain), right?

Buying is resolved before gaining (and thats where trader triggers), so I would say yes.

Thanks! I don't trust myself with Trader questions, having goofed them often enough.

More to the OP - I like the Doctor use here! I am curious to see the discussion between the early Dr. camp (proved marginally effective) and the big overpay Dr. camp (proved very effective).
I also think his forrays into Sage and skipping early FG buys hurt him pretty badly.

Of course as a practical matter the presence of Knights would make gathering many different cards out of the Black Market hard, as those cards could be trashed with no ability to replace, plus the Knights will trash each other.
Clearly, you should buy all of the Knights yourself!  :o
Failing to do so not only jeopardizes your Black Market purchases but also reduces the potential value of Vineyards.

I just got Stef'd

(Of course he won: http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130828/log.50b20dc3e4b0c9ce0cf27eb3.1377722227297.txt)

Man, your Jack deck ran awfully slow... seems like you should have been able to easily outpace that. Although the Upgrades are kind of ???

That said, that's kind of awesome.

This was my thought - first Province on, what, turn 13? That seems pretty slow for a Jack deck.
Does anyone have a theory on why Watno hadn't gotten 4 Provinces by turn 13 or 14 (or am I misremembering the Jack baseline)?

Nicely done. Too bad he had to tarnish it for you by claiming it was luck - you had overdrawn your deck.
This board has all the makings of a fast game - I'm glad you got all the pieces for your  combo before it was too late!
As a side note - unless I misread the log, you frequently made him discard an action card to his envoy when he had no more actions left. It may not have ultimately mattered, but it seems tossing a silver would be wiser.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Button over "End Actions"
« on: August 28, 2013, 10:49:20 am »
A similar situation exists for "end actions" and "end turn". I wanted to not play my Necropolis on my $4 turn 2 on a Sea Hag game and ended up ending my turn with an inadvertant double-click. Make for a rough start.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Bizarre bot strategies?
« on: August 27, 2013, 02:45:12 pm »
The duchy purchasing strategy for the bots is based on 3 or 4 player games. Buying duchies when one pile is empty seems much more reasonable in that setting. The bots also follow very similar purchasing rules so together they can empty piles making early duchies more valuable.

I have been the victim of Bot-group-think. If everyone is doing the same bad idea, your idea has to be a LOT better or else you're better off just rolling the dice and hoping that you can do their bad idea better (luckier).

Help! / Re: Help with Coppersmith Strategy tips
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:41:09 am »
First buy all ten Villages to get a high Village density.  Then buy a few Adventurers to draw the Coppers into your hand, and top it off with a Coppersmith to get past $7 and score a Province.

It seems to me that you have clearly won once you have all 10 Villages; your opponent would surely resign!

This is totally dead horse (http://qkme.me/3vlvoh), but the Rats problem with the Bots is out of control. How hard would it be to give each Bot 2 lines of code: 1 that says do not ever buy a Rats and 2 that says do not ever play a Rats. If you wanted to get fancy, you could allow the Bots to trash Rats, but that might be more work than it's worth.

edit: most recent suffering of Bot-Rats (http://dominionlogs.goko.com//20130826/log.50f6bcf3e4b0b0719c33eb27.1377560408462.txt) (sorry, not pretified since I am at work).

What's the definition of 2?
I thought it was defined as 1+1.

Indeed it is. Most of the counter examples badly define either counting or the arithmetic operator. For example, 1 river + 1 river = 1 bigger river.

This reminds me of my friend's father. He asserts that a sandwich cut into two (probably triangles) is not two half-sandwiches, but rather two entire (albeit admittedly smaller) sandwiches. However, a single piece of bread folded over [stuff put on sandwiches] is a half sandwich. It is frustrating that it almost makes sense, but then doesn't.

I thought the same thing, Watno.
I am thinking, perhaps, that "expansion" here means "discrete set of cards you can buy from Goko" and not "all the cards that were released at the same time". So, DA would be 3 "expansions"?
The email also made me wish (sort of) that I had only bought 1/2 of the cards previously so I could be awarded the promos, rather than have to adventure them.

I think the cheap, easy answer to the OP is that anything that the Bots don't do well (and perhaps a few things they do) are strong candidates for cards/combos/strategies where a skill level will make a significant difference.

That makes sense. Somehow I missed the KC/TR+Herald+Tac discussion and thought the OP was referring strictly to Herald + Tac. Thanks for clearing that up.

Dominion Articles / Re: Candlestick Maker/Plaza + Double Tactician
« on: August 19, 2013, 03:18:08 pm »
I don't think Herald can activate 2 Tacticians like Golem can - it only plays a single action.
If you overpay for Herald, you can put your Tac on top of your deck to ensure your double-Tac chain continues, but that requires buying a lot of Heralds (need more $ and +buy to get what you want and overpay Herald).
I would think Herald + Tac would be a nombo for those instances where you play Herald and discard your hand prematurely. I guess you could always play the Herald last, but I don't see the value it is providing for you at that point.

The first time I bought gokoins, nothing happened (including no $ transfer). The second time, the gokoins were immediately available, but I only received 2 of the email confirmatuons.
Why do I have to buy one pack of coins at a time, rather than specifying how many of each clumping I want?

I thought you meant BM + X where X = Rats. I guess that would be insanity bad advice - anyone care to put insanity wolf's head on the advisor for some upvotes?

169.   Counting House
...and lack of +buy to take advantage of the huge effect it can give you.
Try it with Counterfeit. Just play it last so you don't have to trash your coppers.

Counterfeit's trashing is optional. It also costs $5; when do you buy it? I do like that it provides a +buy w/o requiring an action.

Cellar (strong trasher)

Does that make Warehouse the most powerful trasher in the game? ;)

Fairly classic Bot strategy - build your deck to the point where it starts coming together, then trash your hand down to Apprentice, Apprentice, Copper. Trash a Copper and buy a Copper each turn while your opponent feels shameful for having thought it would be a good game.

But at least I am mostly familiar with the Guilds cards now!  ;D

Thanks, Nutki for the quick card selection feature of your extension!

I played a few games with it just fine, then it disappeared on me when I clicked on my avatar, didn't have a custom one to upload, then clicked "back to Dominion online". Chrome store says that I have it installed, but it doesn't show in my list of applications.

Goko Dominion Online / Goko Butcher bug?
« on: June 27, 2013, 11:45:08 pm »
I am not on getsatisfaction, so if this is actually a bug, could someone please cross-post for me?

I played a Butcher on a Curse; I didn't really want a Copper, so I paid a single Coin Token, thinking that would let me attempt, but fail, to gain a $1 card. Goko had no option to do this, so I was stuck paying another token and gaining a $2.

Is this a bug, or was I trying to do something illegal (I thought I was sneaky :()
