Game Reports / Tough IRL Game
« on: May 05, 2012, 03:58:29 pm »
Alright, I play with Base, Intrigue, Prosperity and Seaside IRL, and I use the included randomizer cards and here is the set we were dealt today:
Steward
Sea Hag
Cutpurse
Feast
Mountebank
Ghost Ship
Goons
Library
Hoard
King's Court
Platinum/Colony: Yes
4 Player game

I started with a cutpurse and a steward, hoping to thin my deck out, still get to 5 while hopefully cutting everyone else down from getting to 5.  the guy who won opened steward/feast which then later turned into a mountebank.  I see now that probably was the better open since people would be trashing coppers with steward, but I still think steward/cutpurse was a decent open.  Another player was trying ghost ships which actually never hurt me, they just allowed all of my non-terminals to never collide.  How would you open in this set?

Dominion General Discussion / Am I right to be upset?
« on: April 21, 2012, 10:31:20 pm »
So I just acquired Seaside (yay!) and we were playing it, so the first time embargo was in play, one guy decided it would be a good idea 3rd turn to embargo silvers... he had started 2/5 with wharf embargo, I had done 3/4 ambassador/sea hag and another player started amb/silver.  Normally, I would consider ambassador/sea hag a better open than amb/silver, but when the silvers are embargoed it was a much superior open (it also didn't help that my ambassador and sea hag collided on my first run through my deck on my 3rd draw, meaning they also didn't get shuffled in... anyways, the amb/silver open ended up being able to get a gold early as well and easily won the game with 34, the closest person behind him was at 9.  The person who embargoed silver said he wanted to make it interesting and force people to use bureaucrat to get silver.  Am I right to be upset that he gave the other guy the game, or do you think it's more of the fact that I had my sea hag and ambassador always collide so I could never play more than one of them?

Dominion General Discussion / Defeating BM in 4p
« on: April 10, 2012, 12:20:13 pm »
So I play Dominion IRL mostly (at least, I prefer IRL) and when I do i usually play with 3-5 people.  My one friend that we often play with only ever plays a BM or a BM+X with the X being a +draw card.  We keep telling him that this isn't always the best strategy (and certainly not the most fun) but he actually wins the majority of the time.  Out of the 14 games I've played with him, he has earned 38 more points than me (yes, I record our scores and do some minor statistics on them, we play often enough).  Anyways, my suspicion is that this has a lot to do with it being a 4 player game.  The other night we had worker's village, goons, monument, laboratory, throne room in (i don't remember the rest) and so I went for a goons/lab/worker's village strategy and was able to have 2 goons megaturns (8 and 10 points off of double goons) and he still beat me by 7 points (he only lost by 1 to someone else).  Here's what I think the biggest problem was though: The other 3 players were all running the same goons strategy.  So our strategies were actually anti-synergizing with eachother because we would only ever have 3 card hands.  However, with platinum and colonies in, the BM player was able to get a good amount of money each turn, even with only 3 cards.  So I think if we were playing 2 player i could have destroyed him.  Another example:  We just finished a game with markets, grand markets and militias.  Because the 3 of us were all going for grand markets and markets, we had a (mostly) even split between them, whereas in 2p I would get all/most of the GMs and would have been able to again destroy the BM player.  What does anyone else think?  Is BM or BM+X significantly more powerful in multiplayer than 2 player because money doesn't run out but the actions do?  Does it require a  much faster deck to defeat BM+X in 3 player games?

Dominion Isotropic / Problem with game history
« on: March 27, 2012, 01:59:18 pm »
For the past couple of weeks i haven't been able to view a game summary, it just comes up with a 404 page not found error.  I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this...  I thought at first it was an isotropic problem but since it hasn't resolved...
