The next Cincinnati tournament now has a date, and the winner can qualify for the World National tournament a GenCon this year too! This will be the first Cincinnati tournament that will have Empires, too.

Join us on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Game Swap in Mason, OH for an RGG-sanctioned Dominion tournament. This Swiss tournament will consist of mostly 3-player games from all expansions of Dominion. The tournament will start at 1PM, every player is guaranteed at least 4 games in the tournament, with the last match concluding by 9PM.

1065 Reading Rd. / Mason, OH 45040

People who enter the tournament will be given a Dominion Promo card. The winner of the tournament will be pre-qualified for the Dominion World National Tournament at GenCon in 2016. This is probably the last chance to pre-qualify for the GenCon tournament this year.

The entry fee will be $5. For each entry into the tournament, $4 will be put into the prize pool. All prizes will be given in store credit. The top three or four players will be given portions of the prize pool (depending on how many people enter the tournament).

If you're planning to attend, contact the tournament moderator Adam Horton at adam@adamhorton.com -- this is not required but can guarantee you a spot in the tournament and it will assist with planning. Feel free to send any questions there as well. I'm (AHoppy) happy to answer any questions you might have here since I've been to 3 of these things. Anything I can't answer I can pass on to Adam.

If you want to hang out afterwards, there will be the normal game night for the local boardgaming group (Cincinnati Area Boardgamers). And even if you don't think you're great at Dominion, come out anyways because those of us out before the elimination rounds will play other games too (or more empires since it'll be new and I doubt I'll have played much of it...) trust me, it's a good time

Other Games / iOS Boardgames
« on: March 25, 2016, 04:47:45 pm »
The last thread is old and I'd rather not necro it. I just got an iPad, mostly for playing board games, such as Agricola with my family. I'm looking for others who want to play Agricola/other games on iPad/iPhone. So far I've got Agricola, Brass, coup, and LeHavre. All of which are great, but better with friends. I'm also open to getting other games that others are playing too.

Dominion General Discussion / Cards for Dominion over lunch
« on: February 10, 2016, 12:33:20 pm »
I've found a co-worker willing to play Dominion over lunch (hooray!). I don't bring my whole box of cards with me because it's too big. So I have a separate box that fits just over 50 cards.  I want to bring a set of 50 cards that creates interesting kingdoms, but I also don't want any cards that require extra bits (coin tokens, cardboard tokens, VP tokens, potions, ruins, etc.) I also want games that can be played in under an hour so I'd shy away from junking, or at least include a trasher if I use them. My opponent is t as well versed in Dominion, so he's not the fastest. Any suggestions for sets of 50 cards? Or at least ratios of categories? When I made the set I have now, I went randomly through my box and grabbed what seemed to be enginey cards, but I have almost too many villages.

Other Games / Game suggestions (dice maybe)?
« on: January 06, 2016, 11:13:50 pm »
I got $75 in Amazon gift cards for Christmas and I'm looking to get another game for my already too large collection...  Right now my collection is really lacking any dice games.  I shied away from them after playing way too much Catan, but at U-Con I played Discoveries and actually enjoyed it, so I want to try another one.  I'm really tempted by Roll for the Galaxy, but I'm a little scared by the learning curve it appears to have. Not for myself, but because it looks intimidating for people who aren't super into boardgames like me.  Which is most of who I play with.  Through the Ages is another one of my favorite games so Roll Through the Ages sounds interesting too, but again doesn't feel like an attractive game for non-gamers.  Pencils/paper just doesn't feel like it'd do it for them (or me if I'm honest)

On the other side, I really want to try Terra Mystica and think I'd love it, but it also might be a bit much for my non-hardcore gamer friends.  I'm planning on picking up Bang! the dice game and/or Codenames with any extra money leftover.

Anyways, I'm rambling.  I'm open to any suggestions.  My favorite games are probably (in order) Agricola, Dominion, TTA, Twilight Struggle, Le Havre.  If that helps at all.

Forum Games / More Agricola!
« on: July 15, 2014, 11:44:44 pm »
Talking to jmieden during our league match I discovered that he had Agricola and had never played it.  So I suggested we teach him.  Turns out in the interim, he taught himself.  So, since we're just finishing up our year long beginners game, anyone interested in playing another game?  This time I would suggest using draft or 10-3 if you're not willing to take that much time to draft, just because I think it's more fun that way.  But we don't have to.  Let me know your preferences below.

Players:
1) jmieden
2) AHoppy
3) ghostofmars
4) Jack Rudd
...

Here's the website we use to play Agricola:

http://www.boiteajeux.net/

make a profile if you don't have one and post your username there (it's easiest if you just make it the same...) here along with your preferred game settings.

Non-Mafia Game Threads / F.DS Canterbury ghostofmars wins!

Here's a link to the Kickstarter for this game, if you're interested in the game itself:
 Canterbury

And here's a link to the rules:
Rules

It's fairly straightforward and no luck at all (except turn order, but it's supposed to be balanced)

Here's who is signed up:

1) ghostofmars
2) theorel
3) AHoppy

I'm currently working on the spreadsheet, with a completion TBD.  If you want to take a look at it, you can see what it's looking like Here

Some notes on the spreadsheet:
-Names you see on the buildings may be slightly different from the names in the game, that's just so they fit in the cells
-I changed the name of the Commerce service to be Trade so that there aren't duplicate shorthand letters

Game Reports / Is Farmland Caravan a thing?
« on: March 17, 2014, 07:45:02 pm »

Code: [Select]
Cellar, Hamlet, Develop, Doctor, Caravan, Herald, Militia, Duke, Junk Dealer, FarmlandAnd here's the log
http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?/20140317/log.517f1918e4b07cbd3b35d0c0.1395099270898.txt

So, I opened silver militia thinking of going a caravan BM.  I don't really see anything engine-worthy here or anything that would require the trashing of junk dealer or doctor and I'm not sure what I would want a herald for.  Develop->Duke seems super slow, but who knows, with all those non-terminal 4's maybe?  Anyways, I get my 3rd turn and have 6 with an estate (I'm realizing now that was super lucky) but I decided to turn the estate into a caravan using farmland, which I was then able to do it one more time.  The second time I decided to get gold instead of farmland, but still, having 2 farmlands in a caravan BM deck was enough to pile out 8 provinces in 20 turns.  I'm not sure if this is more a testament to caravan BM, or to the fact that my opponent ignored militia and opted for a bunch of heralds and only had 1 gold...  But anyways, I was mostly just happy to see farmland do well here.

Dominion Articles / Request: Rogue
« on: September 24, 2013, 05:15:59 am »
So, I did a quick search and could not find an article on rogue.  I'd be curious to see what the pros say about it because from my experience, it's not a good card.  I have never used it effectively, and I have never had it used effectively against me, so I'm not sure what it requires to work effectively.  From what I can think of, rogue wants you to be able to play it a lot, depending on what you want it to do.  It can work like knights, but that only works on every other play (assuming only 2p and no other trashers.)  So if you want it to just attack, it's much worse than knights.  And if you want to use it to grab things from the trash, there has to be things there that you want to steal and since you aren't in control of what gets trashed, it doesn't seem that handy for that either.  So does any one have any example games of where rogue shined or was an integral piece in their strategy?  Or does someone have an article on rogue that I have missed?  Thanks!

Dominion General Discussion / The Hoppy Box
« on: September 17, 2013, 07:52:13 am »
That's right ladies and gentlemen, this is not just another Hobby Lobby box.  Oh no it isn't.  This is my Hobby Lobby box.  It's the Hoppy box, and it is very special.  You want to know why?  Because it looks the coolest.  That's why.  And coolness is everything.  Those people in Antarctica must be the best people ever.  But I digress.  Onto the pictures (I apologize for their massiveness, but hey, the box deserves it).

So this is the box

Isn't that awesome?  My girlfriend did that.  She bought the box for me (knowing it was the one I wanted because she knows people who have it) and she thought hey, this box is too boring, it looks like everyone else's box.  So she borrowed my woodburner and voila. I would like to add that this was pretty much the second thing she had woodburned and it turned out amazing.

For those of you who don't know what the hobby lobby box looks like, here's another view of it

And here's a picture of how I organize the box

Ok, it's not as fancy or organized as the AdamH's box, but it still works.  Unlike AdamH and some other people on here, I use the bag method of organizing rather than organizing the cards alphabetically, I put each card in its own plastic bag

This way, you can reach in the box and snag 10 random bags and play with those cards.  It does get a little annoying with young witch, but then you just pull the 11th card until you get one at the right cost.  Really not that bad.  It doesn't work if you want to play a specific kingdom, but I hardly do that anyways.  But it can be done, just takes a while.  Here's a better look at the cards:

You may notice there is something in with the cards.  That's just a piece of cardboard.  I use that to divide the cards that I have played with from the ones I have not.  We play through all the cards before replaying any of the cards, that way they all see the table for an equal amount of time.  It would be good to note that this is including all the cards through guilds sans promos.  But I'm sure I could shove the promo cards in there if I really wanted them.  This box has not been modified in any way as well.  I took the two dividers that the box came with and stacked them in one slot and was able to fit all the kingdom cards behind those dividers.  I'm not opposed to modifying, but this is easier and it works.  And if I'm not mistaken, Spoemeister asked here for a storage solution that did not require modification.  This does require a screwdriver to remove an easel thing the box comes with, but apart from that, nothing.  Also, my cards are sleeved with the normal mayday games sleeves (the ones advertised in the Dominion box) and it all fits fine.
For the basic cards:

They are in front of the kingdom cards and divided by some index cards.  Yeah it's crude, but I haven't had time to make a more permanent divider or boxes for the cards.  But this works for now.  For the treasures, since the stacks are larger I have a folded index card that sticks out above them and allows you to lift them out of their slot.
For the tokens:

I use a bead container I found at Michael's (I believe AdamH uses a very similar system for his).  It works excellently and even gives you little trays to keep the tokens in so you don't have to spew them all over the table.  It holds all the Guilds tokens as well.
As for the other extra stuff, it all fits in the basic cards box (My girlfriend got me those too along with the box.  She really is the best :))

This includes the mats, extra rats, madmen etc.  Spoils are in with the other basic cards because they are used more often.  I think the prizes might be there too, but not 100%, I don't have the box with me so I can't check.
Finally, I am able to keep another set of basic cards in the box in case I need to have 2 games at once.  They just fit next to the token tube

So that's about it for my storage solution.  It's quite simple and when you woodburn it, it looks fantastic (at least I think so).  Thanks!

Non-Mafia Game Threads / F.DS Le Havre (GAME OVER, WINNER: GHOSTOFMARS)
« on: September 13, 2013, 07:48:38 am »
So I have no idea how well this is going to work, but there has been some interest in playing Le Havre and I'm going to mod it!  Yay!  So while I'm working on the spreadsheet for the game, it would be nice to know how many players would be interested in playing.  So far theorel and Archetype have expressed interest.  Also: How well do you know the game already?  Thanks, and hopefully we'll be able to get a game going soon!

So I'm thinking either 3 or 4 players, so we need 1 or 2 more to get this going.  There is a lot of information for this game, so if you haven't played before it could be tough, but I think it will be manageable

Help! / Remake-Feodum
« on: September 08, 2013, 07:23:23 am »
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130908/log.50fa856de4b0b5f05eb41f19.1378639007760.txt

I know I made plenty of mistakes here, but what I really want to know is if it was a bad idea to remake the feodum into a duchy.  I'm really not sure what lost this one for me (apart from not being able to keep track of how many silvers I had).  I know turn 8 I probably should have gotten a masterpiece and overpaid 3, but instead I got a woodcutter, thinking the +buy would be best.  It turned out it was good (gave me double feodum T10), but would this have been the optimal play in general or was that lucky?  Overall though, I thought this was a very interesting board.  Thanks for the advice!

General Discussion / Juggling
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:21:48 pm »
Does anyone on here juggle?

I learned to juggle when I was really young, but I never really practiced it enough to learn really advanced tricks or juggle high numbers or anything.  It's more of a recreational thing for me.  I thought there might be other people on here who like to juggle.  You know, you walk around your place of residence and just start throwing and catching random things because you can and it's fun... Dropping and breaking things and annoying all the people you reside with... Maybe that's just me...

Anyways, I can juggle 4 balls, but not for super long.  I'm much more comfortable with 3.  I learned 3 ball mill's-mess (one of my few forays into the realm of tricks) in the past year, and it took a while...  I learned how to juggle clubs by using my dad's screwdrivers, because clubs are expensive and he has some pretty big screwdrivers.  It was scary, and difficult because all three were different lengths, but that's how I learned.  I now have clubs and those are fun, but I'm finding tricks even more difficult.

Anyone else have any juggling experience?

Innovation Game Reports / Empty the supply but win on achievements?!

http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201308/12/game-20130812-111244-71f64d56.html

This was probably the most interesting game of innovation I have played, and it is the first time fission has blown up on me...  I was about to win with Genetics, when my opponent uses fission trying to remove it from my board, and succeeds in blowing up the game.  So, as we rebuild I come across translation, hoping to win by getting the world achievement.  So I keep drawing cards to try and get crowns on my top piles.  All I needed was yellow and I draw skyscrapers (finally) and lo and behold, my opponent steals it... At this point I think I'm going to lose but still manage to pull off a win

Non-Mafia Game Threads / Learning Agricola! (Game Started)
« on: July 19, 2013, 04:52:26 pm »
So there has been expressed interest in learning how to play the great strategy game that is Agricola.  Whether you say Agri-cola, like some weird manure-flavored sparkly beverage or all in one syllable, as I believe it is supposed to be said, we don't care here! (I myself am partial to manure-flavored beverages).

SO! We will have to decided what version of the game we play.  We can play the family version of the game, which is recommended to start with, or we can jump straight into an advanced game with minor improvements and occupations.  If you want to play, please post in the thread with your preferred game settings. Also, go make an account at http://www.boiteajeux.net/ and post your username there along with your /in.  If there is enough interest, it could be an all beginner game with me "moderating", or basically helping out with rules/questions.  Signups are now open!

Help! / Rebuild help
« on: July 14, 2013, 03:20:06 pm »
What did I do wrong here?  Was it a mistake to buy duchies early rather than buy an extra rebuild?  Or was I just super unlucky rebuilding provinces twice?  Should I have not bought that early province?  Could it have been that my rebuilds didn't come up until my last hand when it was too late?  I'm just curious how much of this game was lost due to shuffle luck, and how much was due to tactical errors.  Actually a lot of my games I wonder that...

Innovation Game Reports / Opponent's AI gives me 2 achievements

This was a really close game.  There was a point where my opponent needed 1 more achievement and had enough points for 8, but didn't have an 8 on his board
Then he shares genetics with me, causing me to achieve world, and then monument.

Innovation General Discussion / Memorizing the cards
« on: June 22, 2013, 01:14:20 pm »
So I understand how to play innovation, but it seems to me at this point, in order to understand more strategy and how to win innovation, I need to memorize the cards.  This isn't so hard in Dominion, because all the cards available are right there in front of you, and they operate within a set of rules.  There are a limited number of things they can do.  It just feels more structured.  And since you play with multiple copies of them, both using and feeling their effects in the same game, I find it easy to pair a card and its effect and usefulness.  I'm having a hard time doing that in innovation.  Maybe that's because I find it tedious to always be hovering over the other player's cards and re-reading them and figuring out what they do.  Also part of it is that compared to Dominion cards (Well, most of them) innovation cards are/can be quite wordy.  And icons are a lot harder to remember than a simple cost.  Does anyone have any suggestion for how to memorize the cards?  I feel like it would be easier with the physical game, but being a college student, I have to pick and choose when/what games I buy and well, guilds won out :P

Non-Mafia Game Threads / Agricola IV
« on: May 29, 2013, 05:32:23 pm »
After Agricola III, 4 of the 5 players wanted a rematch, so here it is.  If anyone would like to fill the 5th spot, they are welcome to join.

Agricola Rulebook

The plan currently is to use all 3 decks (E,I,K) and drafting the starting hands.  We are also probably going to use tournament mode.  Unless anyone objects to these settings, this is what we are going to use.  Current players:

1. AHoppy
2. Jack Rudd
3. Watno
4. Michaeljb

I'll leave the signup open for a week (June 5) and if we haven't gotten a 5th, we'll just start.  If there is more interest, we can always start an Agricola V.  Please leave your BAJ username when you sign up.  And good luck!

Game Reports / Was Feodum really the way to go?
« on: May 06, 2013, 09:31:00 pm »
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130506/log.51102b6ee4b06719e45eef9d.1367889413961.txt

I wanted to place this in the "Help!" board because I really don't have any idea why what I did won, but winning is frowned upon over there, so it's here.  Anyways...

Kingdom:
Feodum, Fortress, Ironworks, Navigator, Worker's Village, Graverobber, Border Village, Hoard, Bank, King's Court

So I'm not really sure what to do here, so I open with an ironworks, hoping to snag some fortresses and graverobber them into KC.  But then I think, "What am I going to KC?" so the first time I get my KC, it comes up with Ironworks and decide to grab half the feodums because I have no idea what else to do.  You would think with hoard and bank on the board it would be a pretty good BM game or something, but the feodoa win the day.  Does anyone have any idea what a better strategy might be?  I know if I were going to fine tune what I did, I would have not gotten more than 1 graverobber, and I wuld have snagged a WV or two so I can easily get more silver (buying 1 silver with 6 or 7 was kind of a bummer).  Anyone have any other ideas?

Dominion General Discussion / Goko Posession bug?
« on: May 03, 2013, 04:54:37 pm »
So I played a posession, and then used my opponent's turn to play a duchess, I look at his card and discard/put back, then I should be able to see mine and do the same thing right?  Goko doesn't think so... I have to make a decision of where to put the top card of my deck based solely on the back of the card.  Before I report this bug, is this the case?  Here's a screenshot

The hand that is visible there is my hand, not his.

Tournaments and Events / How to host a tournamnet
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:48:46 pm »
So I'm trying to run a tournament at my college, but I don't know how many people are going to enter.  Also, this should only take maybe 3 hours tops because people won't want to play if it takes their whole Saturday.  So I was wondering what the best method to run the tournament would be.  I was thinking if we have 8 people, have two 4-player games for seeding then a 2-player bracket where games are best of 3.  But even then, that could take a long time.  Any thoughts?  I'm assuming around 8-10 people (maybe a few more, but that would be optimistic).  Thanks!

Game Reports / Young Witch with Tunnel Bane
« on: April 16, 2013, 04:01:20 pm »
Here's the set we played:
Crossroads, Storeroom, Farming Village, Cutpurse, Throne Room, Young Witch, Spy, Golem, Stables, Harvest
Bane: Tunnel

Note: This was a 4-player game
With so many options to discard tunnel, it seemed like it would be reasonable to pass up young witch and snag some tunnels.  I was thinking of going for some Golem-Harvest kind of deck, but I opened potion-storeroom.  That was my first mistake, having realized I can only hit 3p with that.  I eventually grabbed some tunnels and golems and harvests, with some TR and a stables thrown in.  It kinda worked, but it was super slow, especially since spy skipped my Golem first time through.  Only one of us ended up going for YW, but he ended up winning.  So is Golem viable at all in this set or is YW the way to go? What do you think?

Game Reports / Stables+Secret Chamber+GM
« on: March 02, 2013, 12:48:26 pm »
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20130301-210501-3c368408.html

So, here I built a nice Stables/Secret Chamber/Grand Market engine, helped by ambassador for thinning.  Now I understand how my engine worked, but I was wondering a few things:

1) How much of what I did was luck?  I recognize that the first time I  used my Amb I was able to return 2 estates.  and I also see that my opponent had his swindler/militia collide the first two times they came up.
2) What did my opponent do wrong?  I still need to work on analyzing what my opponent is doing and how it should affect how I should be playing.  If he had done something else, would my engine have been as strong?  Should he have prioritized swindler over militia?  Was there something else I should have done had I read my opponent better?  (In this game, I just kind of ignored him.  Like I said, something I need to work on).
3)  If I had gotten a 4/3 open, what should I have done?
4) Would Stables/secret chamber(vault) be nearly as strong without thinning or grand market?  Is this a legitimate combo, or was this game a special case?
Thanks!
