Dominion Articles / Re: Suggestion: Combo: Haggler/Quarry
« on: August 04, 2012, 06:44:27 pm »
I guess the suggested combo could be useful sometimes, but how often do you want to buy Duchies in order to gain actions? Early in the game and you don't want the green, later in the game you're less likely to get Haggler/Quarry together, and the benefit seems so marginal (the action you get may never be used). Probably the best place for this idea is a Duke board.

Ehh... Quarry-Haggler would let you buy a Duchy (maybe even Estate in some cases) and gain a more expensive Action.  But on a Duke board, what expensive actions do you really want?  It's probably better to buy Duchy/Duke as the main purchase and use Haggler for extra Silver or actions like HT.  Silver is much more valuable than Quarry on a Duke/Duchy board.

I definitely agree with you, I was just trying to think of a situation where this might be useful. I guess the best partner actions for the Haggler/Duke/Quarry/X combo would be the Markets, Wharf, Goons, Festival, more Hagglers. There's probably some other nice ones as well. I'm not saying its good though, just that it might be okay sometimes, maybe.

Game 1 was really interesting, but I don't know how it should be played at all.

Game 2 was just me losing like a fool.

Game 3 is the only one I have much to say about. I went for Hunting Party because I almost always play the tried and true thing if I think it's reasonably good. Here it just isn't good enough though, he can basically pick up a province's worth of points each turn without hurting his deck. I actually don't stall out (province on turns 9,10,12,13,14,17), with 5 provinces before I even buy my third Hunting Party. So I feel like my luck, with the exception of some early $4 hands, was pretty incredible. My turn 11 should probably be another Hunting Party, not a Nobles.

Moral of the story: HP is real good, but not so great without a nice terminal partner. Don't ignore crossroads with Great Hall, Harem, Nobles (profound right?)

Game 4 I lose by not buying Platinum.

Well they were pretty fun games anyway, thanks for the match Stef.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Best Pair With Base Set
« on: August 01, 2012, 04:33:08 pm »
My Dominion team got Base, Intrigue, Prosperity as our starter pack. I definitely wouldn't include Intrigue - it has some nice cards but overall it's as kludgy as Base without Base's simplicity.

Prosperity otoh was a barrel of fun - although none of us were smart/ruthless enough to get kings court chains set up. That sounds like it would be painful in RL games.

Intrigue has some of the best cards of all the sets - Masquerade, Torturer, Courtyard, Trading Post, Harem, Minion, Steward.  And of course, everyone loves Saboteur.  :D

But on the other hand, Intrigue also has Coppersmith, Wishing Well, Scout, Ironworks and Tribute.

So?  Prosperity has Counting House, Contraband and Loan.  What is your point?

However, Intrigue has Great Hall, Secret Chamber, Shanty Town and Swindler.

Wait. What's the point of this game? We're just naming random cards. This totally has nothing to do with what expansion goes best with the base set...

Uno has 4's, skips, reverses, and draw 4 wilds.

I find Base + Uno to be a reasonably good starting point for a beginning Dominion player. However the overpowered, imo, "Rainbow Deck" using Chapel and D4W shows up just a little too often with only two sets available.

What multiplayer considerations are there? Other than the pin, which I mentioned, I don't see masq playing substantially different.

I don't have a lot of experience with this, but I imagine that passing cards gets a little more complicated in multiplayer since you aren't simply exchanging cards with one person.

As an example, if the person you are passing to is far behind you might be able to pass VP in the late game in the hope of improving your buying power this turn.

I don't really know how often this kind of thing comes up or the best way to describe it.

I lost 3-2 to Mic, he'll post the logs I'm sure. I drop out.

You sure, Fabian?  I fully expect a couple of 3-2 records from each bracket to get to the knockout rounds.

Is the plan still to take top 8 from each bracket? Because that seems like quite a lot for the number of people in each bracket. The only reason I mention this is that a smaller top cut (say 4) gives us a better chance of finishing the tournament before isotropic goes down.

The point is that this thread has devolved into bitching about the definition of the word cheating. Please stop it. I don't usually advocate locking threads, but this has become senseless bickering about the semantics of others' posts. I don't think this thread is going anywhere useful.

I was sincerely under the impression that the entire point of this thread was senseless bickering, and of course its going nowhere useful. Its not the destination, its the journey!

Timchen keeps stealing posts right out of my fingers.

Here's a tip if you want your meaning to be clear: don't make up your own definitions, use conventional ones. Do you expect every person to have read that one post where you cleared up what "cheating" means to you?
This is a conventional definition. It is certainly not one I made up. I have never known 'cheat' to mean anything else, besides in the phrase 'cheat on your (person you have a romantic relationship with'.
That there is a dictionary containing this definition as well, is, I think, pretty clear evidence that it's not something I just made up.

The closest thing to your definition that has been posted is:
"To violate rules in order to gain advantage from a situation."

Which is pretty clearly more nefarious than simply "violate the rules of the game". I don't think your definition is totally off the mark but I think it misses out on a pretty clear component of the typical definition. Which is the sort of value-laden concept of trying to help yourself unfairly.

The Auto Count thing means they have it set so that it cannot be disabled.

edit: well i'm not sure actually, it seems the Auto Count message is required if you've disabled disabling, but I don't know if Auto Count always means that has occurred.

Dominion Videos and Streams / Re: Video Etiquette?

"privacy" - there is no privacy at nationals (I assume).

If privacy is something a person values, then they'll want it as long as possible, even if they know that eventually it will be taken away. So do we respect those wishes for privacy?

"defend oneself" - same as on a forum, IMO.  You post in the comments if you want to defend yourself from what somebody else claims.

If you can't see that there's an asymmetry between the outreach of a video and the comments on a video, then I don't want to be a part of team "rational".

Day 4 Point distribution:

hpjj: 20
Young Nick: 18
boneillhawk: 8
farb: 6

Game 1
Game 2
Game 3
Game 4

Close matches all around.

(Last to post for Day 3, first to post for Day 4 :D)

These point totals are incorrect, it should be:
hpjj: 18
Young Nick: 16
boneillhawk: 8
farb: 6

In the semifinals, will the winner of each pod advance or the top four based on some point system as in the previous rounds?

1623
You have a 1 in 3 shot at winning a 3 player game. you have a 1 in 4 shot of winning a 4 player game. I fail to see how it's unfair to award 3 points for winning a 3 player game, and 4 for winning a 4 player game.
Those aren't the only points awarded in your system though. A second place (4 player) finish is worth twice as many points as a second place (3p) finish in one of your schemes. I'm not sure there's a way to balance the points between the two types of pods.

Also theory, I was hoping you could clarify how ties within a game are being accounted for. Are ties for first worth as much as a standalone win, and do ties at say 3-4 count as 3rd place finishes or something in between 3rd and 4th? Mostly I'm wondering how this is considered for final tiebreak situations.

1624
zxcvbn's proposal is still unbalanced, it just gives the three player pods the shaft now. Winning three of 4 games should be enough for the three player pod winners to advance. I think the point values need adjustment, but its hard to find the right spot where all the outcomes seem reasonable.

1625
The tiebreak rules definitely need clarification, especially the "number of opponents defeated". I thought this was just a way to distinguish between the four and three player pods, but others in this thread have taken it differently (and their interpretation is perfectly reasonable). The other thing which is unclear to me is how ties within a game are counted. Is a 3-4 tie counted as a third place finish for both players or something between third and fourth?
