Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Design the most disappointing Kingdom
« on: February 28, 2022, 09:31:33 am »
Yeah, although even if ChapelBM ≈ BM, it is not that implausible to me that Chapel into later Steward is outperforms chapel by enough to make the chapel plan work after all. Turning your completely dead card into a terminal draw is a big deal, it means that whenever you draw it, you have a 6 card hand as supposed to a 4 card hand.
The thing about Chapel is that you not only ramp up faster, you also stall faster. There comes a time later in the game when you would give your kingdom for a Copper. Those Provinces (and Duchies) can get in the way pretty fast though you often can still buy Silvers or Golds to combat that tempo loss.

So if you would imaging the VP graphs of Chapel+BM and BM you would likely see that Chapel+BM loses some VP initially, but gets to Provinces earlier until it stalls.
Pure BM on the other hand takes a lot of time to get to the first Province, but once it does, it's likely to be more consistent, almost linearly gaining VPs.

Since I don't always know how much time and effort I'm willing to spend, I usually play quick games against a bot and basically treat it like solitaire these days. :D

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Allies Preview 1: Allies

yeeeeah preview season....
I like the design of the allies. Coastal Haven i love you!

I would be interested in why Hunter doens't consider Night cards.
I know there are not many of them but i planned to use Allys in the same cardpool as Nocturne cards ;)

Most likely because they're in different expansions, unless it turns out that there's some Night cards in Allies, which I doubt will be the case. Actually, even in Nocturne, there aren't any cards that refer to Night cards. Same reason there are no cards outside of Alchemy that refer to Potion costs
Well there are some night cards which are also Action cards, like Werewolf, so that's still a valid target.

Coastal Haven says "you still draw 5", which I think means exactly what it says? Draw 5? So if you pay to keep 1 Gold in your hand instead of discarding it, after clean-up you draw 5 and now have 6 cards in hand?
And I would assume the effect stacks with the Flag, so if you pay 1 favor and have the Flag, you would simply end up with 7 cards (1 kept, 5 drawn normally and 1 drawn from having the flag).

I like Bauble because in some games, a single +Buy goes a long long way to making an engine viable.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How many games have you played?
« on: December 12, 2016, 03:22:53 am »
Okay, some of your numbers have to be off. Dominion came out in 2008. Assuming it's been out for 2885 days (just 30 days shy of 8 years, so the number 2885 is assuming Dominion came out January 1, 2008) then some of you are claiming to have played about 3 games of Dominion per day, every day.

That's crazy. And I really can't imagine that being true.

3 games a day isn't hard to pull off.
In my Iso days I think I would average about 10 games a day easily. Because of its simplicity, it was also blazingly fast to play multiple games.

Missing or causing shuffles is only a big deal if there are mostly bad cards in your new deck.

Say you play a Pearl Diver after a bunch of Hunting Parties and shuffle 6 Coppers and 2 Estates into your new deck.
Other than that, I find worrying about shuffles often overrated.

Yes, worrying about and manipulating shuffles is a part of the game, but often the good of playing a card outweighs causing a shuffle.
If you find that you're causing too many unwanted shuffles, the card doing this may not be that good.

Envoy touches 5 cards so will often miss the shuffle as well, but if you didn't hit $6 or $8 already, you're most likely still going to play it.

That it didn't have any quick selects for stuff like "Always reveal Moat", etc.
It's a real joy to play 5 Scrying Pools and wait for your opponent to respond each time.

You have to write a formal mathematical proof that given n turns where n is greater than some i that you will in fact win and no one else can catch up to you.

Most kingdoms, you'll likely play this as a plain Remodeler to turn Estates into Silvers or Cantrips presumably while being able to turn late game Golds into Provinces for a 7 VP swing.

Procession on durations makes most things untrackable, not just Merchant.

You could use counters to indicate how many times you get a certain bonus.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Black Market?
« on: December 01, 2016, 09:15:30 am »
Debt cards might work in a way you won't expect.

If you play a BM and reveal an Engineer the first time, you may (I think) "buy" it by taking 4 debt, however, you can't, during that phase, play $4 first to pay it off immediately. You will always get the debt and still have it during your buy phase at which point you can use the $4 played earlier to pay it off.

If you play another BM during that turn, you can't buy any cards, because you have a debt which must be payed off first.

Exactly.  You can only pay off during your Buy phase.  Similarly, you can't spend Coin tokens at the Black Market.  They only take Bitcoin.
This also means that if you start your turn with Debt, you can not buy any Black Market cards that turn.

Going back to the split piles/knights/castles question, I'm pretty sure you can do whatever you want with that, since as far as I know, the only include one from each was a suggestion, and not official errata for the card.
Well, Black Market itself just says "a copy of each Kingdom card not in the supply"; this would include every Knight, every Castle, etc, but only one Patrician and one Emporium, etc.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Black Market?

I would just ban all cards that have the fact that there's more than one copy / an entire pile of them embedded into their design. The problem is that such a list grows pretty quickly.

You start with the obvious cards like Treasure Map, Fool's Gold, etc.
But you could add Rats where it could be an advantage that there's only one.
How about Magpie then?

And Knights, at least you should be able to get your own Knight to defend! But you can extend this reasoning to every attack card since it's pretty harsh if your opponent gets the only curser and there are no trashers in sight. Attack cards only work if both players can get them. So just ban all attack cards. Okay, without attack cards a lot of Reaction cards look pretty foolish, so let's ban them as well.

What are we left with now? Some harmless villages, but wait, what if your opponent gets a village and you don't? Ban the villages!

In the end, the Black Market deck will only contain Pearl Diver and Scout (if you play legacy mode).

I guess I would just ban all cards (aside from those messing with the setup) that have forced instructions that you know can never be fulfilled, such as "gain an X" or "return this card to the supply":
  • Treasure Map
  • Fool's Gold
  • Transmute
  • Page / Peasant
  • Rats
  • Magpie
  • Knights
  • Farmer's Market
  • Gladiator / Fortune
  • Bustling Village
  • Temple
  • Wild Hunt

If you neither trash nor discard, you just played a $5 Pearl Diver.  :-X

I think this is a great utility card you will get in most games, but nothing too fancy.

BSW: A dozen?
ISO: ~5000 (up to lvl 40 when I used to be more competitive)
Goko/MF: ~2000
IRL: Not that many compared to online, somewhere in the 10s

Total: Let's round it up and make it 8000, accounting for some lost data / unranked games / 3p games, etc.

Currently I play about 2 to 5 games per day on average.

However, you can't do this if there are no coppers or curses (or other $0 card) in the supply.
Unless you have some cost reduction due to Bridge/Highway/...

mail-mi, just as I always do a double-take when I see your signature, I do a double-take when I see the word "estate" in a non-Dominion context.

Sorry I couldn't give you a better card . . .
I dub thee Journeyman. It's very similar to Smithy which is Davio, and I always mix the two of you up.
Yeah, somehow my old avatar got removed from the internet, so I hastily had to pick a new one. I like Island.

Dominion Articles / Re: Caravan Guard Strategy Article

This card has a reaction which can be pretty substantialbas with several caravan guards reacting, you can spike a Province even after being attacked (forced discard for instance) and the guards will hit the discard the same turn as you're reacting.
