Dominion General Discussion / Re: what's up with cursed gold
« on: January 18, 2018, 11:49:15 am »
I have a similar issue with catapault, where I just have no idea how often you should trash coppers v estates the first few plays.

You should always trash Coppers unless you have a very good reason why you need to hit that $1 more this turn.

That's what I tend to do, but it seems like lately I often lose to people who clear out the estates early.

Agree with aku that Overlord is underrated. I’d put Overlord well above Border Village, Inheritance and Lost Arts, and maybe over City Quarter. There are games where the right move is to buy almost nothing else.

Edit: you should usually also buy VP at some point

Sentry only looking at 2 cards is a big drawback. If you don't get it until the second shuffle it can really whiff by hitting your opening buys, and you're looking at turn 10 or so with 2 estates and 5 coppers still in your deck.

Also agree that Groundskeeper is way underrated. Winning the Groundskeeper split when it's there should be a priority on a lot of boards. It's also bonkers in the endgame with any +buy.

My hot take is that Pirate Ship is better than dead last, even in 2 player. Trashing opponent’s copper is bad, but you can win a game by taking advantage of someone who has already thinned down and is banking on one or two silver or gold to build their engine up. Being able to pick which treasure to trash is huge, and in those rare games when it gets up to a terminal $6 or $7, you’re almost immune to greening.

It’s obviously bad in general but I’d put it above Bureaucrat, Navigator and Noble Brigand for sure.

Villa - Merchant Guild

Villa lets you spend the coin tokens you gain from Merchant Guild on the same turn you earn them. Just lost a game where I was certain my opponent was one $ short of winning on a pileout, but this trick put them over the top.

Scrying Pool-Vassal

If you had an action on your deck for vassal to play, scrying pool would have drawn it already, so your vassals are all almost guaranteed to be terminal.

Game Reports / A ridiculous kingdom

Scrying Pool, Skulk, Apprentice, Count, Cursed Village, Laboratory, Rogue, Vampire, Werewolf, Hireling

So many crazy interactions it was hard to know what to focus on:

Open Skulk for quick economy and to immediately hit $5 for Count/Apprentice trashing
Scrying Pools can draw Werewolves to play as Nights
Vampires gain all the $5s
Counts gain Coppers to trash with Bats
Rogue gains Skulks trashed by War to get more Gold.

With Cursed Village as the only village, Hexes were flying like mad and I had turns where I played a Skulk, 6 Werewolves and a Vampire for Hexes.

My opponent resigned out of frustration with the length of the game, though they were sure they would have won. I finished against the Rat because I was having fun.

Definitely do not remove the respect system.  I won't disagree that jokes should be upvoted less and content upvoted more.  But that would essentially be censoring a certain format of speech, because you do not like the impact the speech has or what people are saying with it, and that should be against anyone's principles.

I don't know what the answer is, but maybe aggressively forking offtrack topics are a good idea.  The large mafia subforum grew out of an "in defense of monopoly" thread, which shows that interesting things can come from sidetracks, but at the same time shows a thread can definitely dig deep into something that OP might not be interested.  Forking isn't really censoring people if it's done in an internally consistent way, and censorship should be a one-step-after-last resort, when you turn the server off, maybe you censor the powered down server a little bit, that's when it's ok.

You could split it in two.
Smiley for funny content, arrow or plus or thumbs up for serious content.

The Wine Merchant face on Discord is pretty fantastic for this.

Just to set the record straight, I personally have never told a joke for forum respect. My jokes are all pure of intention. I'm not a phony class clown like some users I won't name.

Hey I’m working towards a 2-1 respect to post ratio here and it sure as hell isn’t thanks to my insightful kingdom analyses.

It seems pretty obvious that there was a simple misinterpretation wherein “expansion for he masses” was interpreted as “expansion for newbies” since it’s a natural, if flawed, train of thought to imagine that most people who don’t spend time on f.ds/reddit/discord discussing dominion must be a newbie. There is of course a vast swath of people in between, presumably containing almost everyone who might be called a “dominion fan.”

I am a pretty big fan of a lot of things that likely have active online communities that I have no interest or involvement in.

Quest - Tunnel

You don't actually need to have 6 cards in hand to pick that option with Quest and discard all your Tunnels.

Some thoughts on the dlc:

Just tried it out, and I’m disappointed. When the description of Champions Ballad promised a new dungeon, I was excited, because after beating the game I realized that good dungeons were what I felt was most lacking. I expected something awesome that would redeem the overall weak dungeon design, maybe something the vein of Hyrule Castle, since that was the one part of the game that really nailed the open world exploration theme in the context of a dungeon, and I really wish there had been more of that. I maybe expected more of the map to be accessible, like across the canyon to the north.

And instead we get...another tedious combat trial. I expect there is actually a dungeon afterwards, because otherwise the teasers would have been a complete lie, but I am not really all that motivated to get there. There is already the trial of the sword for those who love a combat challenge or who want hours of frustrating game overs.

I've played a game of Dominion on my phone while in the middle of a IRL game of Dominion!

I once played a 6P IRL game with 4 first time players. I could have played a league match between each of my turns.

Mint - Changeling

Because sometimes you don't actually want the Mint

Now I really wish there were a way to increase costs of cards so that Stonemason - Changeling could be a thing. Works with Trader, though.

It’s like the Dire Straits song. I never understood what advantage there was to getting chicks for free; if you were also getting money for nothing.

There's a certain social stigma attached to getting chicks for money.
There's usually some cost, still. It just isn't always a direct transaction.

Yes it’s kinda like that other Dire Straits song:
When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold

It looks like you have baker setup in there twice. Also do you need to mention anything under setup for obelisk?

Ah, a specific case of the more general synergy between draw-to-X and discard-for-benefit.

Sure but how else do you build a full engine of this type with just 2 cards?

Is there a functional reason why Wish is not a Spirit or is it mostly to be thematic?

Exorcist?

Right, that’s exactly my question, like is is specifically important for exorcist not to be able to gain it? There are these four non supply cards that you can get via other stuff, and three of them are grouped together as the ones you can get with exorcist, and I was just wondering if there was an interesting reason for that. (I know Bat is similar too but that clearly has a specific relationship just with Vampire)

This all makes sense for Bard, but then it seems kinda funny that it costs $4 while Tracker can cost $2.

I mostly just don't get why we have both Tracker and Bard in the set. Have there ever been two cards with such similar effect in the same expansion?
Are you saying that the ability to put cards on your deck is really similar to nothing?

I don't think I am, but maybe I should have said "on-play effect"
