Dominion General Discussion / What's the deal with TGG?
« on: March 05, 2024, 01:28:23 pm »
I haven't seen much discussion here (though I haven't dug too deeply), so I'm curious about the whole deal with TGG. Some of these questions may have objective answers, and some are just about the opinions of the community. I haven't played much recently on dominion.games and I haven't tried TGG at all, but was thinking of getting back into it a bit. Fwiw I do appreciate that TGG seems to have given me credit for having spent some money on Goko roughly 11 years ago.

  • Is the plan for TGG and ShuffleIT to both continue to exist as independent products indefinitely?
  • How do the interfaces compare? What are the pros and cons of each?
  • Are there general trends for who tends to play on each platform? What is the quality of competition? Are people migrating to TGG for the most part or staying on dominion.games or some of both?
  • Is it worth continuing to pay for a ShuffleIT subscription, and also paying for sets on TGG?
  • Will TGG ever use a subscription model or can I expect to play indefinitely if I shell out for each set?
  • Will TGG ever run in a browser or on MacOS?
  • Other thoughts?

Game Reports / A ridiculous kingdom

Scrying Pool, Skulk, Apprentice, Count, Cursed Village, Laboratory, Rogue, Vampire, Werewolf, Hireling

So many crazy interactions it was hard to know what to focus on:

Open Skulk for quick economy and to immediately hit $5 for Count/Apprentice trashing
Scrying Pools can draw Werewolves to play as Nights
Vampires gain all the $5s
Counts gain Coppers to trash with Bats
Rogue gains Skulks trashed by War to get more Gold.

With Cursed Village as the only village, Hexes were flying like mad and I had turns where I played a Skulk, 6 Werewolves and a Vampire for Hexes.

My opponent resigned out of frustration with the length of the game, though they were sure they would have won. I finished against the Rat because I was having fun.

Other Games / Tak from A Wise Man's Fear

For any fan of the Kingkiller Chronicle who hasn't heard about this, there's a kickstarter for the abstract game Tak appearing in Wise Man's Fear. Apparently Rothfuss had no specifics about gameplay in mind when he concocted the game in the text, and didn't think the gam could be made, but James Ernest won him over eventually.

Game Reports / Prince + Tournament

I don't own the physical Prince promo and only just bought it online, so I don't really know how to use it all that well, but it worked out here nicely. Got really lucky with the 3/5 opening on a Baker board for an early Count, and trashed down right quick. It's a short log, since opponent resigned when I Princed the Followers. Would have been fun to play out but can you blame them?

Help! / 10 FG loses to BM-Plaza?

Opponent had just Moneylender for support. I thought I would run away with it when I saw they didn't go for Fool's Gold, but did I do something wrong here?

Studies have shown that "It depends on the board" is the most common 5-word string used on this forum, and in the vocabulary of everyone who frequents it [citation needed]. Every rule of thumb has edge-cases. But is this really true? Are there any things that should always be done regardless of the exact specific cards available?

A few to start:

-If you are ahead in VP and can end the game on your turn, do so.
-Open Potion if all cards have Potion in their cost.
-Don't open double Curse.
-Play the game according to the rules in the rulebook.
-Don't viciously insult/attack your opponent.

Dominion General Discussion / Best target for Procession?
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:16:22 pm »
I know we've had the best target for King's Court discussion before, and I'd assume that there wouldn't be much deviation there from best targets for Throne Room (side question: can anyone edge-case that?)

But you usually don't want to play your Mountebank twice, lose it, and gain an Adventurer for your troubles. So what cards are best for Processioning? We'll assume of course there are cards you want on the board at $1 more.

Two that come to mind immediately are Feast and Island. Procession a Feast to gain 3 $5's immediately. Or Procession an Island, set aside 2 cards, gain a $5 AND keep the 2VP due to lose track rule.

Opponent connected this combo twice before I was able to, and it was pretty much gg. Really swingy but fun board. Ironworks and Conspirator made it move really fast, and Knights just added to the craziness.

Cards we didn't touch were Transmute, Duchess, Talisman, and Thief.

Dominion Isotropic / It's back!

No clue what happened, but maybe something along the lines of when DA cards slipped in accidentally? Anyway, get on while it's still here! There's only like 3 people in the lobby and I need opponents!

Dominion General Discussion / Dominion Reminders
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:05:58 am »
Even after a few thousand games of Dominion, I still often find myself making some pretty silly errors in both strategy and tactics. I thought about compiling a list of a reminders for myself based on my facepalmiest mistakes. Add yours below!

1. Awesome though they are, Grand Markets are not actually worth VP. Try to remember to buy Provinces too.

2. Despite the symbol +, followed by a number, followed by the word "Cards," Warehouse and Inn decrease your handsize when played.

3. The Unstoppable City Stack often isn't.

4. Even though it's displayed at the top of the kingdom, Peddler often costs $0! Feel free to take some with those extra buys before hastily clicking "end turn"!

5. Hand is Horse Traders-Silver-Silver with an action left? Pause and think carefully for a second....

6. When playing a Scrying Pool engine with Jester/Swindler/Saboteur, you might consider not always discarding your opponent's good cards.

Dominion Articles / Request: Tribute
« on: June 27, 2012, 10:53:25 am »
I'd really like some insight on how best to use Tribute. It's the only card in the game (I think) for which you don't even know how many actions you'll have left after playing it, so I tend to have some decision paralysis when I draw it with, say two good terminals or a terminal draw. Because of this I'm sure I ignore it more often than I should. Obviously it requires paying close attention to the composition of your opponent's deck and comparing that with the needs of yours. And I'd think it's best in mirror matches (opponent plays BM = more money for you; opponent's engine strengthens yours). But some more advice would be helpful.
