Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion uh...misconceptions

A lot of beginners also look at Chapel and ask why did they print this card.
Ah, I remember learning Dominion...when I saw Chapel, my first thought was "There's clearly something I don't understand about trashing."

I know Donald has said that coloring is used to alert you when you're holding your hand that you might want to do something (ie reveal a reaction card). Can someone help me out on why Ruined Market shouldn't be brown/white, or Necropolis only orange?
The Ruins cards are all actions. As with Duration cards, being half white wouldn't be telling you anything extra. I mean the game could have gone that way from the beginning, but it didn't.

The Shelters meanwhile are not all Actions. With two of them indicating the other type it seemed best if Necropolis also did.

Again I do not know why Necropolis doesn't have red on the same side as the others. You can't be consistent for every type, but these could have been consistent. You could ask Catrein, he did the layout.
Thanks for the reply. That all makes sense (well, minus the whole order of the Necropolis red, but whatever) - close enough to perfection.  8)

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Things we DIDN'T see in the previews
« on: August 10, 2012, 11:58:59 am »
Quick, someone go read the Secret Histories for clues...if things get slow enough at work, I might just do this and post findings here.

6930
Is anyone else freaking out that Necropolis should be red on the top and not the bottom, to match the other two? Maybe I need to get my OCD checked...

Yes.  I'm telling myself it won't be as bad when I'm actually playing, rather than seeing them all right next to each other like that, but I don't think I'm convincing myself.
I don't think I'm getting something about the colors in general.

Shelters appear to be orange, like durations.
Ruins appear to be brown.

But Shelters that are Action-Shelter are white/orange, whereas Ruins that are Action-Ruins are all-brown.

I know Donald has said that coloring is used to alert you when you're holding your hand that you might want to do something (ie reveal a reaction card). Can someone help me out on why Ruined Market shouldn't be brown/white, or Necropolis only orange?

Any chance there are cards that START in the trash?
This...this could be fascinating. Perhaps if there were, they could help explain some of the "missing cards" space realized in other threads. Perhaps might also explain Graverobber's cost range.

Maybe.

So if every preview has violated a "rule" so far, what rule is going down tomorrow?

Thanks to angrybirds for the games. I've been clearly outclasses this tournament but it's been very fun. After losing a tournament game where I got Followers first to WW earlier today, it was nice to be on the winning end of that same scenario.  ;D

And the final week 1 match is finally in the books. Many thanks to WW for the games. They were a very humbling and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Anyway, they were fun games, thanks for playing Voltaire!
Want to give a belated thanks for the fun games!  :)

Voltaire 45 - 36 Robz888 http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201204/07/game-20120407-094759-f4cb1d7e.html
Nothing too exciting going on here, so I go with a Bishop plan. He goes Island/Silver, which doesn't scare me. Well, I don't hit $6 until Turn 12, and by then he already has 3 Provinces. So that's that.

I have an "ooo, shiny!" problem with Island. There's got to be something hilariously better than them on the board or else I will always, always opt for them (likely at my own expense). That made it nice to win this one.

I'm a little demoralized from my Ghost Ship losing to his No Ship, going into this game. With no engine potential, this is definitely a Wharf Big Money game. He goes Silver/Silver, I go Silver/Feast. I'm not sure which was better. Well, I mean Silver/Silver is definitely better, but I didn't want to take the risk of not getting a Wharf immediately. Although the risk of that is so low, thinking about it now, I'm almost certainly wrong. Anyway, first turn advantage and adequate luck earns me a win in a boring, but close, game.

Going into the final match 3-3, I was slightly disappointed to have a Wharf+BM game be the deciding match, but you won it fair and square.

Thanks to my opponent for the games!

Same to you! This has been a most enjoyable tournament, and I've had a lot of fun playing against players much better than myself. Hopefully I've picked up a thing or two.

Mic Qsenoch wins 6-1 against Voltaire
A very fun set of games against Mic Qsenoch, who quickly established himself as the superior player. It was extremely fun and I'm glad we were about to squeeze all our games in during a chance meeting on Iso.

Week 2 is pretty tricky when you're not good at Duke games.  ;)

You can take pops' spot, Voltaire.  You have a make-up match with WW to get in by the end.  Let me know.
Thanks. Mic Qsenoch and I are trading PMs, and I'll be in touch later, WW. Thanks for letting me sub in!

It seems pops is not intending to participate in the tournament. He hasn't responded to my messages, and apparently the same thing happened in Round 1.
Well, if anybody's still looking for replacement players, I'd be interested. I missed the sign-ups by literally one hour, I think.  :-\

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Dominion Bracket: Play-in Games

Any update on these? I just found the threads and voted, I very much like the idea of a "favorite cards" bracket and was disheartened to see many of my favorites in play-in games  :o I must fight for their greater appreciation!

6941
I just sent in what I think is a very competitive entry, but I've been shocked by the tricks others have pulled before. We'll see!

Solo Challenges / Re: Quickest to win Round 2 - The Road to Victory

Interesting. By playing a few times, I was able to cut 6 turns off my initial try, but I have no idea if it's the best strategy. Anyway, my submission's in!

Had about ten seconds left to get Y, couldn't do it.

6944
The last one was a while ago, but I dunno, hopefully it'll be semi-regularly. This one was really successful, with all 16 slots filled and quite good competition and everything, so I would imagine they would be encouraged to do more.

And thanks for not going, my girlfriend's brother was first on the waiting list and he got to go instead  :P
Happy to help, in all honesty! I felt terrible dropping out at the last minute and hoped someone on the waiting list would get to play.

6945
Hmm... you gain it from Thief and are told to put it into your Investment mat, which you can't because there is no mat, so you can't do that, and it goes in your discard pile. Is that wrong?

More important is it's interaction with Royal Seal and Watchtower.

Possible solution: Remove the mat entirely.  Have it be worth $4 if someone has purchased a Province, $1 otherwise.  The "trash all supply" rule could still be there, if desired.
With "trash all supply," buying a Province would be a great way to initiate a 3-pile by buying one Province to empty an entire pile.

Buy a province, trash the Investments, power up your cities. Seems like cool synergy.

Playtesting, playtesting, playtesting.  8)

Council Room Feedback / Re: Expansion Data

Dominion 2.08 1.06  0.83%
Prosperity 1.82 1.02  -3.11%
Seaside 1.54 1.01  -4.15%
Intrigue 1.53 1.03  -2.36%
Hinterlands 1.08 1.14  7.83%
Alchemy 0.89 1.07  1.52%
Cornucopia 0.78 1.10  3.95%
Promotional 0.28 1.09  3.72%

Worst at Seaside? But I love duration cards!

Best at Hinterlands? Ok...not really my favorite set, but that's cool.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The least bought card
« on: March 06, 2012, 04:40:23 pm »
I guess I opened a can of worms here. I was referring mostly to the players on the forum where my 25-30 area is a bit below mid-level compared to the forum. Considering in the DominionStrategy tournament I was a 29 to start and was dead in the middle of the bracket (I would have played a number 1 seed in round 2 had I won), I think upper 20s-low 30s is mid-level. That's still not to say we are all great players that play perfectly, even at the high levels above 40, but its a start point.
This makes sense. I've peaked at about Level 24 and I'm still working on effectively counting/tracking my deck ("Has my platinum come up this shuffle? No idea!") and those sorts of things I know true mid/upper level players do out of habit. I certainly don't "feel" like I'm a mid-level player yet. Just a very, very, very good low-level Isotropic player (like everyone else here, I usually dominate my friends in real life).

6948
Thanks for doing the writeup, Forge. I wasn't actually able to make the tournament and wasn't one of the players there. I had a real-life event come up the day before that unfortunately had to trump the tournament. I hope to make the next one, the place said they were hoping to make these semi-regular events, no?

Big tip of the hat to slow louie, who stuck around for a Pirate Ship game after our third player quit in anger. We chatted a bit about Dominion and our tastes in games. A big thumbs-up!

Chicago. Going to this tournament tomorrow. Anyone else from here among the players?
