Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Overlord + Walled Village
« on: April 10, 2019, 12:16:08 am »
Question:
I played Overlord as Walled Village (and one other card)
At the end of the turn I was not given the option to put it back in my hand.
Is that right?

Walled Village under the bar happens in the clean up phase. Should Overlord still be Walled Village during clean up? It hasn't left play yet has it? Or do all cards leave play at the start of clean up?

27
It depends if there is $ based payload. But if there is then Steward is pretty great. It's a $3 lab that can be played for $$$s if you draw your deck.

(But it needs a card to play after you have drawn everything. Something like Goons or Giant or Courier even can work)

On turn 14 it seemed to work fine.... (And I trashed in play)

Hm.

On turn 12 it let me do it for the first time. I think what I did differently was trashing a card in my had rather than in play. But Sewers doesn't say anything about "in play"

Still not sure what's going on....

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Monastery + Sewers
« on: January 21, 2019, 04:55:15 pm »
Is there a reason I can't Sewers after using Monastery?

I don't see why not from the card text. Is it an error on DominionOnline or am I missing something?

Game number: Game #22660523

Thanks,

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Card Tokens?
« on: January 03, 2019, 12:13:20 pm »
I think one difference between card tokens and action/coin tokens is that you want the extra card right now far more often.

It's easy to have no use for an extra coin right now... it's common to want to buy something that costs less than what you produced. Whether that's because you produced more than this turn when you're into the Province-buying part of the game; or you simply produced buy would rather have a cost than a Gold.

Similarly, with actions; it's plenty likely that you produce more actions than you can play; based on not having terminals in your hand.

But with +cards; unless you have already drawn your deck, then you are almost always going to want those cards right away. Or at the very least; you will always want them at the start of your next turn. So I think +card tokens will end up acting more like Wharf or Haunted Woods.

You are definitely more likely to use them right away, but not always. Having a bigger hand at the start of the turn can be really useful.

It is also handy if you don't want to trigger a re-shuffle

But you are right - the delta between +cards and +card tokens is not as big as +actions/coins and +action/coin tokens

Variants and Fan Cards / Play all your cards
« on: January 03, 2019, 11:49:18 am »
An idea I had while out for a run yesterday. Something like this:
'
$5
You may play any number of action cards that do not use "+cards" in their text

Or
$5
Set aside any number of cards from your hand
Play them one by one until all have been played

I was thinking about some version of Black Market or Storyteller but for actions.

Would something like that work?

Too cheap?

Variants and Fan Cards / Card Tokens?
« on: January 03, 2019, 11:41:01 am »
It's the obvious missing one. (Buy tokens do not seem very interesting)

Simple cards that might work:

$5
+3 card tokens

$4
+2 card tokens

$2
+1 action
+1 card token

Is it too slow (card decisions take longer I think than coins and actions)?

It doesn't seem too powerful?

Obviously there are more complicated cards out there.

I assume someone has thought of this and there is a thread somewhere?

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Start your turn with three empty piles
« on: October 04, 2018, 03:52:28 pm »
Buy Donate with two empty piles. Trash Catacombs with Donate, gaining the last card in a third pile with Catacombs' on-trash effect.

Yep.

In a real game I emptied Golds in a similar way (for MArketSqaure). I thought the game would end. I was pretty surprised when the other guy got another turn....

Puzzles and Challenges / Start your turn with three empty piles
« on: October 03, 2018, 02:55:20 pm »
Just what it says.

We know there are ways to empty three piles but still give your opponent a turn (Page, Peasant, Ambassador, Encampment)

This is not that because they still start their turn with a max of two empty piles.

How do you have them start their turn with three empty piles?

While we're talking about art, why is the art for Ruined Village a ruined looking Walled Village? That was a promo so the vast majority of Dominion players will never have played the card and they won't make the connection. Why not, you know... just a ruined version of Village?
That was something Jay did. Note though that Village does appear on Pillage in the same set (and on Scrying Pool). So he may have just been avoiding doing two callbacks to Village at once.

Maybe Ruined Village should have been:

"+1 Action. If you have less than 3 actions in play you may put this back on your deck"

[I know why this is wrong. In so many ways]

37
I'm not entirely sure what you mean with your new case, but I guess you mean it's not worth building an engine because you can't consistently play enough payload cards.

But my point is that there are also cases where you want to and can play payload cards as often as possible, but the only or main way of getting cards is buying them with coins from Silver and Gold. So you want the engine. I don't think that's so uncommon. Or even cases where there are Action-based coins and/or gainers, but also Silver/Gold gainers that you use in addition, to get more buying/gaining power quicker.
My point is that if you want Gold/Silver in your deck, then the engine you can build isn't usually very good. So often you might be able to build an engine, but some form of BM is better.

I don't think I ever* build engines where I want Gold/Silver gainers if there is no TfB. That's just asking for your engine to stall.

*slightly exaggerated

Ok, then that just seems pretty wrong to me. If there is trashing and attacks (and actions and draw), then I usually want an engine even if the only way to gain cards is through buying them with silver and gold. Lack of +buy might make me want to reconsider, but not always.

Does an attack not could as a "payload", or does "payload" only mean $$s?

(i.e., could Hag or Familiar be a "payload" that you want to make sure you play a lot with an engine - but need gold for $$s?)

Rules Questions / Inheritance + Island (or Great Hall or Mill)
« on: May 30, 2018, 09:25:27 am »
If you use Inheritance on Island, are your Estates worth extra VP?

And if so, are they worth 2 VP, or 3 VP (since they "gain" the abilities of the card, they should "gain" the +2VP on top of their normal 1 VP, to make them worth 3VP).

Unless the VP value of the card is not one of the "abilities" of the card?

(Or Nobles with cost reducers)

40
Honestly you could just gain the Silver to your hand. It's not that broken, right?

Would make it better than Explorer. Both would gain a silver to hand (Explorer CAN gain a gold later in the game), but then the Bureaucrat also has an attack.

Which I guess shows how weak Explorer is for a $5.....

41
Or:
"+1, Gain a silver, Other players take the -1 card token"

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What should Dominion do next?
« on: March 13, 2018, 11:43:54 am »
I had a dream about this last night.

My "Dream idea" was:

"Tournament Dominon"

There were cards that you could buy that were something like Heirlooms. You bought them in "game 1" and then they started in your deck in "game 2" against the same opponent.

Stuff like this:

$8 Ongoing Silver
Worth $2
____
Replaces a starting copper in your next game
Type: Treasure / Ongoing

-=-=-=-
$6 Ongoing Necropolis
+2 actions
_____
Replaces a starting Estate or Shelter in your next game
Type: Shelter / Ongoing

-=-=-=-

You could imagine lots of variations. Cards that are bad this game, but good the next. Or good this game, but bad in the next (but only if there is another game happening). Cards that stick around multiple games (not just next game). Cards that shift VP from one game to another, etc.

Obviously very different than anything Dominion has done before, could easily be game breaking (lets people who are killing it in a game, get a leg up next game - almost the opposite you would want to happen), and doesn't fit for casual players who will only be playing one game, and what do you do about resigns? Ideally you would want to buy these near the end when you are already ahead.

So likely one of those dreams that will not come true....

Game Reports / Overlord + Kinghts
« on: February 07, 2018, 01:20:54 pm »
This was a little nuts and unique in all the games I played:

Forge
Relic
Knights (the VP Dame on top; Second one was Anna - the trashing one)
Port
Navigator
Steward
Cellar
Overlord
City Quarter
Engineer

Plus:
Plan
Aquaduct

It went 29 turns. Almost everything was trashed. A crazy slog.

The full log below.

Mistakes made:
- Trashing too much too early
- Relic wasn't needed
- Using Engineer to get Silvers, and letting TG take the VP from Aquaduct

I'm sure there are a lot more! I don't think it is fun to play, but it's very unique - and it makes it obvious why Knights trash each other.....

Dominion Articles / Re: Turbo-Treasure-Map Combo: Plan+Engineer
« on: January 30, 2018, 02:54:47 pm »
I can't think of many cases where I would want 6 activated treasure maps...

But it might be a nice start to get Two TMs that give you trash+economy and then let you transition into something else...

45
Okay. Much better.

Silver/Chapel. Trash hard to get to nothing

Pick up a Sentry on first $5

Then either a Festival or a Witch (depending on trash level)
(then the other)

I was able to trash down to Silver-Festival-Witch-Throne Room pretty fast

Then an Artisan

Then some Workshops to drive the Throne Rooms

Throne Rooms become super important. Without them you have no draw (Festival-Witch gives you net no change in hand size, but Throne Room-Throne Room-Witch-Throne Room-Witch-TR-Witch-Festival works great. But you need a lot of throne rooms and no junk)

Pretty soon the Throne Rooms and the Curses were out and the Witches were low. I took a mega-turn and empties the Witches and four Gardens and ended it on piles (on turn 15).

I think it was robust enough it would stand up against junkers and fast enough to beat the rush. (And you have a lot of deck control to drag out the game or speed it up)

If your chapel misses the shuffle though you are done before you get started....

46
I just tried playing it with two bots.

It wasn't great as the bots played so badly it was hard to say what REALLY would have worked (They both opened chapel and trashed down alright. Then picked up Silvers and Bandits for $$s, then picked up a Witch, then basically played big money from there)

I stuck with my plan (chapel/workshop, a couple of silver to hit $5, then Festival, then Witches and Throne Rooms, with an Artisan or two for more build, then pivot into Gardens once the engine is hitting)

It wasn't great. I barely used the Workshop. And I never really got to fully trash down - even without getting hit with a ton of curses off the top. I think it would lose to either the rush or simple Witch/Chapel.

I think the play is Chapel/Silver. Trash hard, and then make sure you have a deck that draws itself and can keep the curses under control.

I will try that next

47
What I would play:

Open Chapel/Workshop
Trash down. Use Workshop to build economy + Throne Rooms
Pick up a Festival on first $5 (I think), then Witches
Pick up an Artisan
Use Throne Rooms + Witches for draw, then Workshops and Artisan to build your deck

I think it would beat Workshop-Gardens in two player (you could even contest Gardens and end up with a bigger deck than the rush player), but it might fall apart with 3-4 players as the game ends before it builds up steam

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Asking for Undo
« on: November 08, 2017, 07:46:13 am »
I generally accept all undos. Only exception was a guy who was playing a wishing well and then asking for undo when he didn't get what he wished for.

I generally only ask for an undo when I made a mistake (usually a misclick, but sometimes just playing too fast) that doesn't reveal any new information). If I am refused the undo, I block them at the end of the game. I don't think they are bad people, I just would rather not play them again. Life is too short.

The nice thing about the system is there doesn't need to be a rule or a convention everyone follows. People can choose to play how they want and find others like them.

The only place that falls down are people who rage quit without resigning or slow roll. I often lose patience in those situations and they get to "win" the game. Wish there was a better solution there.

Dominion Articles / Re: Public Service Announcement: Mandarin/Capital
« on: October 06, 2017, 03:08:05 pm »
Not as good, but similar concept:

Play Counterfeit / Capital at the end of an engine. Two cards generate $12, but you need to re-buy the CF for $5, so you generate $7 for two cards. So a little better than two golds, but a bunch of extra buys - and $6/card o the last turn

I could test on:

MAC (latest OS)
Windows 10
Latest Android tablet
Latest IOS tablet
Chrome Book (whatever they use)

Going on vacation on Thursday so will have some time.
