6 cards is pretty easy: Anything/Anything/Village/KC/Wharf/Wharf does it, for example.

Here's a game without Goons (!) where I lose 144-138:

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2011
« on: December 17, 2011, 04:06:04 pm »
Maybe the best possible Noble Brigand, leaving my opponent with $2 in his deck after three turns:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/17/game-20111217-125957-81e0df42.html

   — ycz6's turn 2 —
   ycz6 plays 4 Coppers.
   ycz6 buys a Noble Brigand.
... Sopenas draws and reveals 2 Silvers, trashing a Silver.
   ... Sopenas discards a Silver.
   ... ycz6 gains the Silver.

— Sopenas's turn 3 —
Sopenas plays 5 Coppers.
Sopenas buys a Mint.
... trashing 5 Coppers from the play area.

   — ycz6's turn 3 —
   ycz6 plays a Noble Brigand.
   ... getting +$1.
   ... (Sopenas reshuffles.)
... Sopenas draws and reveals a Silver and a Mint, trashing a Silver.
   ... Sopenas discards a Mint.
   ... ycz6 gains the Silver.
   ycz6 plays 4 Coppers.
   ycz6 buys a Mint.
... trashing 4 Coppers from the play area.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Exception to the rule, part 2
« on: November 30, 2011, 05:22:24 pm »
Thisisnotasmile's post gave me an idea:

You have a Bridge in play, $2 total treasure, two buys, and a Trader in hand. The Curse and Copper piles are both out. If you buy a Silver, you'll be out of money, whereas if you buy an Estate and reveal the Trader you will have $1 remaining and can buy another Estate. In this case buying an Estate is strictly better than buying a Silver, unlike TINAS's original situation, where you might as well just buy a Silver. And you may still prefer a Silver to an Estate.

Less contrived solution:

The Silvers are Embargoed.

Game Reports / Re: Confirmed: Mandarin is a confusing card.
« on: October 15, 2011, 04:23:01 pm »
His plan was probably to just buy two Border Villages to 3-pile, grabbing random actions with them, then buy a Duchy to end the game and win. It's just unfortunate that the random action he chose happened to be Mandarin, making buying a Border Village and a Duchy impossible.

Of course, he could have gotten a Duchy with the BV on-gain effect the second time around, but likely he wasn't paying too much attention since he figured he'd already won. He said as much in the chat postgame when I pointed this out.

How do you grab Duchies with Border Villages when two Quarries are in play?

Game Reports / Confirmed: Mandarin is a confusing card.
« on: October 15, 2011, 03:53:33 pm »
See if you can spot the two completely reasonable mistakes my opponent made, which, together, lost him the game:

#1 ycz6: 22 points (3 Provinces, 3 Great Halls, and an Estate); 16 turns

#2 marin: 21 points (2 Provinces, 5 Great Halls, and 4 Estates); 16 turns

   — marin's turn 16 —
   marin plays a Border Village.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions.
   marin plays a Great Hall.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
   marin plays a Grand Market.
   ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action, +1 buy, and +$2.
   marin plays a Grand Market.
   ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action, +1 buy, and +$2.
   marin plays a Great Hall.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
   marin plays a Grand Market.
   ... (marin reshuffles.)
   ... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action, +1 buy, and +$2.
   marin plays a Border Village.
... drawing 1 card and getting +2 actions.
marin plays a Silver and 2 Quarries.
   marin buys a Border Village.
   ... gaining a Mandarin.
... ... putting a Silver and 2 Quarries back on the deck (in some order).
   marin buys a Border Village.
   ... gaining a Mandarin.
   marin buys an Estate.
(marin draws: a Silver, 2 Quarries, a Province, and a Great Hall.)

Great Halls, Border Villages, and Grand Markets are all gone.
ycz6 wins!

Other Games / Re: What other games are as good as Dominion?

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Race for the Galaxy yet, that's the game I see compared to Dominion most often. You know, on the Internet and stuff. It's got a similar style of indirect interaction and "powering up" as Dominion, and it's even got some of the same people on its staff.

- Loan.  When Loan hits a Gold or Platinum, you'd have been better off not playing it at all.

False! Loan gives you +$1, remember? :P People seem to forget stuff like this a lot in these topics.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Average Turns Per Game
« on: June 29, 2011, 01:04:15 am »
Looks fixed to me! No more obvious errors, at least; there are still a few instances of averaging longer games with Colonies, but those are likely just due to random variation. Thanks :)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Average Turns Per Game

Erm, try looking at more than one card maybe?

Baron: 19.60 ± 1.64, 13.00 ± 7.90 with Colonies
Ambassador: 21.23 ± 1.94, 15.33 ± 9.73 with Colonies
Menagerie: 19.91 ± 3.41, 12.83 ± 8.14 with Colonies

Not to mention some of these stats are blatantly wrong... only one of my 4 Menagerie + Colony games ended in fewer than 15 turns, and that one was a resignation. These stats can't actually be mean ± standard deviation.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: The fatal buy
« on: June 26, 2011, 01:08:19 pm »
Anon: I think that works. It's a cleverer version of something I was considering; my strategy failed to buy the Contraband while ensuring that Geronimoo wouldn't draw it in hand on his next turn. I'm not sure it actually satisfies the conditions of the puzzle, though; the first post implies that Geronimoo's deck is able to buy a Province with 100% certainty next turn regardless of the shuffle as long as he does nothing, whereas your solution requires that his deck be in a particular order on his next turn. It also requires the additional assumption that his opponent names Province, which isn't a stated part of the problem.

This puzzle is hard...

Maybe I'm just used to invisionfree-type forums, but I actually found those useful and not at all confusing. >_> Especially in the "Bible of Donald X." forum. Can you change the text on those buttons to "Previous Thread" and "Next Thread," perhaps?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Average Turns Per Game
« on: June 24, 2011, 01:39:20 pm »
Does anyone know exactly how councilroom.com calculates those stats? Because according to my player page, every single card averages a shorter game length with colonies than in general.

http://councilroom.com/popular_buys?player=ycz6

But in almost every case, the (mean + standard deviation) for Turns (C) is higher than for Turns. Which makes me wonder if that statistic is calculated the same way that the Isotropic leaderboard is? That still doesn't make any sense... and is also not how means work.

Edit: Actually, scratch that. I didn't look very hard at the data. The cards with shorter average turns have lower scores for Colony games than otherwise, while the cards with higher average game lengths have higher scores for Colony games, though still not by much.

Boardgames: Catan, Chess, Diplomacy, Risk, Small World
Card Games: MtG
Video Games: Any Smash Bros. game, Mario Party 1-4 (too fun), assorted others

I used to be really serious about Super Smash Bros. Melee, but dropped out of the tournament scene when I started college. Would still love to play it, but there isn't that big of a community in Boston =/
Holy crap, for real? I'm going to MIT right and have been playing Melee for a while, and I'd be glad to play with you! Once I get back from summer vacation >_> See http://www.youtube.com/user/ycz13
as well as http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=256340

I haven't really played any games that seriously besides Melee; Dominion, chess a while ago, and I guess Tetris are the only ones that are anywhere close.
