Forum Game Awards / 2015 f.ds Mafia Game Awards -- Nominations
« on: December 07, 2015, 08:07:15 am »
I am now taking nominations for all categories listed below.

Please note, I've decided to significantly lessen the number of awards we give out this year, but hope to add in more discussion.  See post 2 for what I mean.

Mafia Game of the Year
Players, mods, and spectators should nominate the most memorable game from 2015, based on the player/spectator experience.  This award highlights and recognizes the overall best game held during 2015, and includes all aspects of a mafia game on f.ds.  When someone asks, "hey, what game should I reread to know if I should start playing mafia at f.ds?," this should be the first game that comes to mind.

Mafia Setup of the Year
Players, mods, and spectators should nominate the most impressive original setup introduced in 2015 based on the player/spectator experience.  This award highlights and recognizes setup creation by a mod, and focuses on all the important aspects of a good game of mafia: including balance, roles, and thematic interactions.

Flavor of the Year
We all know that writing flavor can be a hard and grueling task.  This award recognizes those mod specifically who put the time in to choose, implement, and write flavor that improves the game experience, while not disadvantaging players who don't know the flavor.  Players, mods, and spectators should nominate the most spectacular flavor used in a game in 2015.

Town Player of the Year
Players, mods, and spectators should nominate the one player that they would rank as the absolute best when given the town alignment in 2015. This award highlights and recognizes a player that best embodies the virtues of good, and includes characteristics such as strong scumhunting, the ability to convince fellow players of good ideas, plans, setup theory; and appropriate and impactful use of night actions.

Scum Player of the Year
Players, mods, and spectators should nominate the one player that they would rank as the absolute best when given an anti-town alignment in 2015. This award highlights and recognizes a player that best embodies the virtues of (in-game) evil, and includes characteristics such as an uncanny ability to fool everyone else, extraordinary skill at exploiting any extra information received as scum, phenomenal fake claims, and impactful use of night actions.

Newbie of the Year
Players, mods, and spectators should nominate the one player who debuted in 2015 that rises above the rest, regardless of alignment.  This award highlights and recognizes a new player's ability to quickly and accurately learn metas, rules, setups, and make an immediate positive impact on f.ds's mafia world.

Mod of the Year
Players, mods, and spectators should nominate the absolute best mod of 2015, based on their performance at all aspects of running a game.  This award highlights and recognizes a mod's attention to detail, creativity, and dedication to the game and f.ds.  Specifically, this should include setup creation and explanation, flavor writing, and accuracy in vote counts and rulings, and availability to the players.

The Rules:

The Golden Rule:
This is a game. Everyone who signs up to play must be considerate of each other, never get personal, and focus on having fun. Once the game starts, having signed up is a commitment: inactivity is just as inconsiderate as rude comments.

The Standard Rules:
1. No communication between players outside of the game thread or shared QTs at any time. This includes passing references, jokes, or cases in other games or threads, whether in context or not.
2. If the game thread is locked, do not post. If you are unsure if something is locked, ask the mod by PM.
3. Direct or verbatim quoting of mod-provided information is strictly forbidden. Paraphrasing is okay.
4. Actions with instructions that do not specify a game state will be resolved in the order they are received.
5. All night actions must be submitted within 24 hours of day ending.
6. Players must post once every 24 hours.
7. Do not edit or delete posts, ever. If you need to clarify or correct something, post again.
8. Invisible text, font size less than 10, and spoiler tags are not allowed.
9. Cryptography is not allowed.
10. The time between a lynch being reached and a flip being provided is called twilight. All players may continue posting during this time, including the lynched player.
11. Dead players may not post in thread or QT, except their Role QT. A lynched player is not "dead" until a flip has been provided.
12. Personal multimedia, such as video or audio recordings, are not allowed in the game thread.

The Voting Rules:
1. Votes should be in this format: Vote: Playername. Unambigiuous nicknames are acceptable.
2. Unvotes should be in this format: unvote or Unvote: Playername.
3. Unvotes are not required if changing your vote from one player to another.
4. You may vote: no lynch.
5. Lynches occur when a simple majority (rounded up) of living players is reached. Once reached, a lynch cannot be undone.
6. Lynch rules vary by the number of players alive.  With 10 or more players alive, the player with the most votes at the end of the day will be lynched.  Ties are broken by coin flip.  With nine or less players alive, if a majority lynch is not reached by the deadline, no lynch occurs.

The Rest:
1. Bold, maroon text is reserved for the Mod. Players may not use it.
2. If you have an issue or problem with the game, please PM the Mod. Do not post complaints in the game thread.
3. Mods make mistakes - please point them out gently. If they can be corrected, they will. If irreversible, they will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. If a mod error disadvantages one faction greatly, the game may be called off.
5. Ask all questions and make all requests directly to the Mod via PM. Questions deemed as "universal" (defined as questions for which the answers should be available to all players) will be requested to be re-posted in the Game Thread and answered there.
6. One prod will be issued after 48 hours without posting in the game thread. Players are subject to replacement or modkill after one prod.
7. All rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, as determined by the mod.

General Discussion / European Soccer
« on: October 20, 2015, 08:46:22 am »
Now that I'm back to living in Europe, I feel like I should care about European Soccer again.

I supported Fiorentina before, but now I feel like I'm forced to choose between Roma and Lazio.

Any suggestions?

(I've noticed that living in one country doesn't preclude someone from caring more about a league in another country, so I'm keeping the discussion continental.)

Mafia Game Threads / Standardizing "normal" roles
« on: September 29, 2015, 06:24:30 am »
See here: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=13950.msg527572#msg527572

I'd like to create a library of standard roles for use in normal games on f.ds.  We can use it much like the rules thread -- a resource that can be referred to or used.

I've done one as a sample, which is of course an easy start for debate and discussion.  It's at the link above.  I'd like us to focus on one, basically agree (with probably me being the final arbitor on contentious issues), and then move on to other common roles.

If no one or few folks comment or object, I'll just make the calls myself.  I prefer discussion, even though this stuff is pretty straightforward.

Thanks.

Puzzles and Challenges / Optimal Setup for the Omnipresent WanderingWinder
« on: February 22, 2015, 06:37:13 pm »
This is a puzzle, and it is Dominion-related, so I figured it goes here.

Given we are all WanderingWinder, what is the optimal setup (in terms of computers and peripherals, Internet connection, office space, scripts, robots, whatever) for WanderingWinder to log in to all forum accounts to post all posts posted, as well as stream all the streamed Dominion games, play all games on Goko involving forum members, and basically anything else that is publically accounted for on the Internet?

(I'm not sure my phrasing makes sense.  Basically, since we're all WanderingWinder, how is he (am I) pulling off all the separate forum accounts, posts, streams, games, etc.?)

Mafia Game Threads / Dune 2: Game Thread (Town and Survivor Win Flawlessly)
« on: February 22, 2015, 05:05:44 pm »
"Ghost town?  No, that's just silly superstition, of course.  Jacurutu
exists, just like any other seitch.  It's populated by living beings,
not ghosts. The problem is, some of them are worse than ghosts."

--from the oral histories of EFHW, the Atreides Burseg, from prison

Many years have passed since the Harkonnen successfully captured Jacurutu, biding his time while the events in Arrakeen played out.  He could never have known what was to come, who was to take over.  So he eventually grew content to live out his life in Jacurutu, lording over a seitch of misfits and stragglers, secreted away in the deep desert.

Long forgotten, become a story to scare Fremen children, the Seitch in the furthest reaches maintains a precarious balance among its residents, both good and evil.  But, even there the teachings of Liet-Kynes have reached.  Much like the slow but inevitable crawl of technology reaching even the most remote areas, the dream of a green Arrakis has planted itself in the minds of most.

But that isn't what's best for everyone...
