Goko Dominion Online / Re: Bizarre bot strategies?
« on: April 03, 2013, 09:23:10 pm »
In the single most annoying game ever played on Goko, I present

http://dominionlogs.goko.com//20130403/log.5143c778e4b0d173cd4c231a.1365038040968.txt

I went for big money / chapel and eventually crossroads, but the bot kept insisting scrying pool was good so it bought 10 of them, as well as 10 spies and pretty much nothing else save for 2 fairgrounds. Aside from choosing a horrible strategy, it made the game take way longer than it should have.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why is Possession so much fun?
« on: March 19, 2013, 09:17:13 pm »
The one time I played a bot with possession on the board, they didn't buy a potion until I had set up a scheme+possession thingy. If it was a human opponent I would have chastised them for attempting to copy me.

General Discussion / Re: Drinking

Didn't notice this thread before :( but I love beer, especially double IPA's and imperial stouts. My top 3 beers are Sam Adams Utopias, Founders KBS and Surly Abrasive ale (on draft it's better than hopslam!). Dark horse plead the 5th is also great, and a bit more reasonably priced than the other imperial stouts. For breweries in general aside from Founders and Surly, I usually go for stuff from the west coast - Lagunitas, Stone, Rogue, Sierra Nevada. They know what's up over there!

Council Room Feedback / Re: Council Room Going Down for Maintenance
« on: February 14, 2013, 11:54:42 am »
I've been having trouble pulling recent games for about a week, but since "record by opponent" still doesn't work I can't really use CR effectively at all.

Edit: Also I have 8 anticlimactic achievements (I play lots of multiplayer), but it doesn't show up in the goal statistics page.

I think getting a second hag would be more beneficial than a bureaucrat on the first reshuffle. Plus there's other shiny stuff like villages and smithys and bishops. I just can't see picking one up ever.

Back to my still-unanswered question, would anyone else pick up a Bureaucrat on this board or is it just me?

I think you are in the extreme minority, but I don't know if you mean as an opener or what. I think a bureaucrat-opening player would have no chance vs the hag - hag clogs your deck, and you are proposing that we further clog it with silvers. I played this board with rabid yesterday, and at no time did I think "wow let's pick up a bureaucrat now, that will win the game for me." If I remember correctly I didn't get any stables either (or maybe like 1?), because village-smithy was humming pretty nicely. I'll let him post the log, since CR isn't working for me :)

If you get tournament and pick up Followers, Bishop has an even harder time keeping up.

But followers isn't AS critical due to the sea hag. You could open yourself up to other strategies though - pick up a bishop and bag of gold, and you have many free vp's available to you. Still, if nothing else the duchies gained from tourneyprov will help you win.

Aside from the strategic considerations, I don't consider p2 to have an advantage here. You either open sea hag or you don't, and the game is decided based on that + initiative. But yeah, sea hag into tournaments worked for me. Bishop is way slowed by the cursing.

Help! / Re: Did I spend to much time buying Treasure?
« on: January 29, 2013, 06:06:59 pm »
I would have gone the city route as well, since there is so much support for it (quarries and the various +buys) that the city pile should be empty in no time flat, and that's really all you need to do since we have lots of +buy already - platinum/mint would be icing on the cake once you empty the city pile. However, if there was no support for cities, you would probably be correct in avoiding them entirely, although I still don't think trader is correct here either way.

decent game-plan:
1) open quarry/develop
2) get a worker's village and possibly another quarry, while developing estates into woodcutters
3) get as many cities as possible. If the cities are running low, you may wish to develop a quarry into city/$3card(another develop perhaps)
4) Once the cities are gone, get a platinum
5) At the end of your next turn, play all of your coppers, then buy a mint (or if you severely won the city split, you can avoid buying mint altogether and instead gain it mid-turn by developing a now-useless $4 card).
6) mint platinum and buy colonies, all while using the develops to get rid of useless cards like copper

note: you may also consider doing Level 3 (or 2, for you programmers) cities by buying out a 2nd pile, depending on how the city split works out - your opponent eventually recognized this and that's why he bought out the WV's

I make no claims about this plan being entirely optimal, but it's a start, and it should be faster than 'province rush with trader' (and it's more or less what sharky was saying). It's also a bit more coherent than what your opponent was doing. In general, trader is not so good in colony games (unless it's a curse fest or something).

finally to answer your question:  you were rushing provinces, so you shouldn't be worried about buying colonies! so I would say get like 1 gold, then only buy provinces (like on turn 8-9 instead of gold), then you would have had more of a chance at ending the game while ahead. Also I would have trader-ed the develop on turn 10, instead of developing the trader into a city which helps him. Cheers

2012 / Re: 2012 DominionStrategy.com Championships: Final Four
« on: January 20, 2013, 11:06:12 pm »
I really like this final four - all highly skilled superfreaks from my somewhat limited experience playing them. I voted for stef, but lespeutere should give him a run for his money - experience doesn't hurt and they are both playing lights out. Obi vs stef with stef taking it sounds about right.

=-sup-= vs gman314

We played with veto mode, same starting and the basic point counter. He knocked RisingJaguar out of the main tourney, so I know he is legit!

End result  sup 1 gman 4

Game 1 log: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/03/game-20130103-172024-09c4c918.html

I thought I would have this because I had been practicing vinyards, but I guess I could have done it differently (last turn gaining a duchy would have helped me more).

Game 2 log: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/03/game-20130103-173103-65e91dfd.html

He got a bit luckier with black market, but I should have opened either YW or Remodel instead of the oasis. His bishop from bm sealed his win.

Game 3 log: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/03/game-20130103-173710-74e38f38.html

Lots of cursers – I have initiative again but we split the curses evenly. He is able to somehow match his bridge with his two cities lategame several times to pull ahead and end it on piles.

Game 4 log: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/03/game-20130103-174351-a2ef3b88.html

My only win was “just barely” in a chapel/ TR/monument board.

Game 5 log: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/03/game-20130103-175246-af8d7471.html

I started out okay with double swindlers, but it doesn't slow him down like I was expecting and he clinches it.

Man... I don't lose like this very often, but it is what it is. I am more of a multiplayer guy, but I have been practicing my 1v1 too (I had just beaten sharky before these games). I am not as confident playing from first position, so maybe that had something to do with it. I guess there is a reason he had beaten RisingJaguar in the tourney.

once again I have a time zone issue - hoping to play my game this weekend sometime, or maybe on friday.

I am forfeiting my match to ddubois

What happen?

Somebody set up us the bomb.
Main screen turn on ...

Maybe he REALLY doesn't like complainers. I think that was his issue with Marin anyway

Just played with sadpanda. Apparently he was never able to get in touch with his opponent, and just assumed they would find each other on ISO which never happened.

My losers bracket 1st round is against liopoil (jefhw). He lost his first round match 1-4 to Marin – but as everyone knows, anyone who can beat Marin in even one game should be pretty good. My abridged comments follow each match.

Game 1 - http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-131943-80543802.html

Same warehouse/remake opening for both players, with a margrave/bazaar engine on the to-do list. Fairgrounds is an option as well, and I connect better on my initial remake turns and cruise to victory mainly due to initiative.

Game 2 – http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-133039-80e1b2ea.html

Vinyards / university. However he got more potions earlier which basically won him the game. I should have gotten more potions! Oh well

Game 3 – http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-134851-564cc1a0.html

Black market + Inn/council room. I out-cursed him with familiars at the start with the goal of at least slowing him down, but he got marginally better black market stuff including masquerade and possession. Interesting game, with intelligent usage of Inn from both players.

Game 4 – http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-140136-df64eea6.html

I tried pirate ships here, both to trash his money and to discard his mountebanks (which are pretty strong here as well). He eventually trashed his mountebanks and all of his money in favor of monuments – this was much more elegant than my pirate ship / lookout setup. It was an inevitable result.

Game 5 – http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-163717-00d6e4aa.html

Swindler game, but I opened 5/2 so I did mandarin/trading post. Moneylender, swindler, inn and crossroads all followed. Don't know why he embargoed duchies.

Game 6 – http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/12/game-20121212-164824-da4d1b3c.html

He has double masquerade but it's kind of counter-productive here since we're both going for islands as well, and there are no cursers or anything. The masq was kind of annoying though because I had to give up a silver and a scheme.  However I'm up to 3 golds before he has any, and it's game over from there.

End Result:  =-sup-= 4,  jefhw 2

It was a very fun match and I look forward to my future matches. Thanks for the good games jefhw.

Same here. I never really come to this site, but have fun to everyone who got in. I'm rooting for shark_bait - I know he did well last year, and my games against him have been mostly embarrassing.

21
Ah lol. I just assumed they meant 5 prizes including duchy, but I knew there had to be a reason. Thanks. I'll try again

22
I like the new features and achievements, thanks for making it happen. I do have a question though about the Ultimate Prize Fighter achievement - can anyone tell me why the game http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120122-223801-cd840838.html  doesn't qualify for that? I seem to have gained all 5 prizes in one turn. Seems to be a pretty rare thing  :)
