Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent: I am Sorry
« on: January 24, 2015, 05:51:47 am »
Dear opponent:

You were kicking my ass.  Up 41-14 with a much better deck, 4 Colonies left.  You even knew to junk up your deck because I had two Possessions.  But for some reason you kept adding Advisors and I even swindled your Count into a Butcher in hopes that I could Possess you and use the Butcher.  But me drawing both of my possessions at the same time on a fat deck was totally lucky, I then I proceeded to take the last 4 Colonies on the two turns I possessed you.  It must have hurt, and I'm sorry.

Rules Questions / Re: HoP + Counterfeit
« on: January 17, 2015, 11:36:34 pm »
Here's an interesting case of HoP/Counterfeit.  I can only imagine the arguments that would have happened if this game were in real life.  Friends would be lost!

He plays exactly eight different cards, including the Counterfeited HoP. On the first HoP play, he can gain a Province because HoP is in play.  But gaining the Province trashes the HoP.  Counterfeit then plays the HoP again (even though the HoP is in the trash), but now there are only seven different cards in play because the HoP is in the trash, so he can only gain a card costing up to $7.  He then plays another HoP (not Counterfeited) and now he can gain a Province again because the second HoP is in play and he's back up to eight different cards in play.

An interesting subtlety here is that Counterfeit trashes a treasure after the treasure has been played twice.  So say he plays this exact same turn and Prince ($8-Action) is available.  He can use the Counterfeited HoP to gain Prince on the first HoP play and Province on the second HoP play, but if he gains Province on the first HoP play then he could not gain Prince on the second HoP play because gaining the Province trashes the HoP immediately and then there are only seven different cards in play.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: New Sporcle Quiz: Dominion By the Numbers!

Great feedback everyone, thanks!  It looks like this quiz is pretty broken right now, so I'm taking it down.  At least it got everyone thinking and posed some interesting scenarios.  I greatly appreciate all of your input.  Play my other quizzes if you haven't yet; those are solid.  Thanks!

« on: February 27, 2014, 10:06:05 pm »
Hey gang!  My 5th Dominion quiz is now up on Sporcle!  This one is for people who appreciate a little mental math!  Of course, you can also use pencil and paper and even a calculator, but I did these all in my head so it's not that bad!

Report your scores and let me know if I screwed anything up!
Dominion By The Numbers!

Dominion Cards: Hard Mode (Name the card based on limited information from the card.)

« on: January 12, 2014, 05:25:48 pm »
I just went on here and searched tgorm just to see if anyone else had been slow rolled by him - lo and behold, I wasn't the only one!  Also saw another guy in the chat room complaining about him slow playing after he was obviously beat later on that day.

Nobody needs to hear the specifics (he thought I was getting lucky, he made some bad choices at the beginning which contributed to him being unlucky, he curses, then the slow plays.....).

Anyway, for anyone still looking at this thread - tgorm.  Don't play him.  Honestly, do yourself a favor and don't do it.

I just played tgorm.  What a nightmare.  He got a 2/5 he didn't like, so he started complaining about it and then started calling me names and to "sit and wait like a bitch".  I never even said anything.  All this because he didn't like his 2/5.  I blacklisted him with the extension, but oh my god what a psycho.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko....working?
« on: January 08, 2014, 03:52:06 pm »
I got one game in and then the "play" button stopped working again.  You start a game and it doesn't start.  So it's basically back to the usual sucky thing that it is.

I have no leverage as a customer because I stupidly bought the sets. They have no incentive to fix it because they can't possibly get more money out of me.  This whole thing is pretty much a scam.  I'm not even asking for my 40 bucks back because although I deserve a refund, I am an idiot for giving them my money in the first place.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Number of games on Goko

I know I stopped because it seemed rather pointless and depressing to play on Iso once its death date got announced.

I did the same thing, especially that last week. Maybe I should've binged though!

I also retired a week early from Iso despite having 6,000 games played because I pulled off the unfathomable Quadruple Mega (gained all Colonies, Provinces, Duchies, and Estates in one turn) and I just decided right there that that was how I wanted to go out!

Nothing like rocking a Transmute / Great Hall combo for the win.  Duchies paved with gold!  What a great card, Transmute...gotta love those hybrid synergies ;)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Remembering Your First Game of Dominion
« on: January 04, 2014, 08:32:04 pm »
Three-player game with two friends who own base set.  I remember everyone using all extra buys to buy more coppers.  Hey why not, they're free!  I also remember one player buying a Duchy every time she hit $5.  I also remember saying at the end of the game, "I think coppers might actually be a liability" and nobody believing me.

Dominion General Discussion / Mega Kingdom Strategy
« on: January 04, 2014, 10:49:55 am »
You play a two-player game with EVERY kingdom card except Black Market available.  All other usual rules apply: 10 each of all actions and treasures, 8 each of VP cards, game ends when either all Colonies, Provinces, or three other piles are depleted.

What is your strategy?

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Background scene - am I the last to notice this?
« on: December 28, 2013, 11:13:42 am »
I hear ya.  I got through 1,200 Goko games without noticing.  The way I realized it was I was fast-forwarding through one of Wandering Winder's YouTube videos and obviously it changed very quickly and that's when I saw it.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Create game does not work
« on: December 27, 2013, 07:25:14 pm »
Same here.  Been over 24 hours now.  I tried Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.  I tried clearing my cache.  Nothing is working.  I have always had trouble with the final "Create Game" button before you create the game being glitchy, but this is the first time that the first "create game" button (the one in the lobby) has gone useless on me.

Also, when I try to start an Adventure, it just fades to black and hangs when I click the button to start the game.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: New Sporcle Quiz: Click A Card...
« on: December 27, 2013, 01:50:48 pm »
One issue with this quiz is that some cards appear twice, and apparently you are only intended to select them once per category.  I didn't know this, so I clicked both Overgrown Estates as hybrids, both King's Courts for costs $7, etc. which left Tunnel and Bank inaccessible for me.

I understand.  This is a Sporcle functionality issue, not a designer issue.  Those familiar with clickable Sporcle quizzes would not think to try to click the same answer twice for the same hint, but I understand that most people don't play as much Sporcle as I do.  I will add something to the instructions that helps with this.  Thanks!

So this is what happens when Goko stops working.  Good, clean, constructive political dialogue.  See how much more we could all be accomplishing?  ;)

So I was just reading the PDF rules for Guilds and it has pictures of Copper, Silver, Gold, Estate, Duchy, Province, and Curse that all feature actual art on the card.  Are these cards available now and if so, where?  Is this how they're being printed now?  Thanks!

All great points, thanks!  Fixed!

Haven does not have a mat.

This game would be fun to take a picture of in full setup.  Or if you're at PAX or something and you want to look as geeked out as possible.

Dominion General Discussion / Worst. Setup. Ever.
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:17:26 am »
Trying to come up with the kingdom that would involve the most painful setup possible:

Young Witch, Black Market, Hermit, Urchin, Marauder, Familiar, Island, Native Village, Trade Route, Baker, Fairgrounds.
(Tournament, Pirate Ship, Goons, Monument, Bishop in Black Market deck.  Colony and Platinum in use.  Shelters in use.)

This would necessitate the use of:
- Room on the table for 28 f-in piles.  11 action cards, 4 Victory Cards (Estate/Duchy/Province/Colony), 5 treasures (Copper/Silver/Gold/Plat/Potion), Curses, Spoils pile, Ruins Pile, Mercenary Pile, Madman Pile, Prize Pile, Black Market Deck, trash.
- Four types of tokens (VP, Coin, Trade Route, Pirate Ship)
- Four types of mats (Island, Native Village, Trade Route, Pirate Ship)

Also include all duration cards in the BM deck just to clog up the table more during gameplay :)

The Fairgrounds is mostly to be nice, since you might be looking at 12 points apiece for them in this kingdom!

Hey gang.  With Goko being down again, I figured why not make the best of it and make a new Dominion Sporcle quiz.  This is my fourth Dominion quiz and is the only the second clickable Dominion quiz on Sporcle besides my last one.  Feel free to report scores and feedback.  Good luck!

Dominion Cards: Click A Card...

My previous quizzes:
Dominion Cards: Hard Mode (Name the card based on limited information from the card.)

Dominion Cards A-Z Blitz (Name one card starting with each letter of the alphabet in under two minutes.)

Dominion Super Quiz (Name a card that...)

Dominion Articles / Re: Combo: Hermit/Madman + Market Square
« on: December 02, 2013, 03:04:49 pm »
Been practicing on casual mode on Goko against unsuspecting opponents.  It has worked 3/3 times.  Here is my best attempt... $66 and 10 buys on turn 15.  ;D

I built this kingdom so that nothing impedes the combo but also with enough other enticing stuff that people might reasonably avoid Hermits and Market Squares.  If you want to practice, I recommend this kingdom.  So far none of my three opponents have gotten in my way at all :)

Pawn
Fishing Village
Hermit
Market Square
Baron
Mining Village
Salvager
Trader
Wandering Minstrel
Merchant Guild

Definitely working better of late.

Perhaps they did this just to mess with our minds to make Goko seem awesome when it works, when in fact it still is not.  Kind of like how gas prices went from $2.25/gallon to $4.50/gallon in the summer of 2008, causing an outrage, but in the 5+ years since then everybody now thinks that $3.50/gallon is just fine.

Goko Dominion Online / First ever online gaming better than Goko?
« on: November 22, 2013, 10:00:11 pm »
My first online gaming experience came in 1996, when my dad ran a null modem cable on the floor in the middle of the hallway from one room to the other to connect our two PC's so we could play the hot new "Deathmatch" mode on Doom 2.  To start a game, BOTH players at the same time had to type in an identical string of commands into DOS, with different commands for every game parameter which looked something like this (and if you screwed up even one character it would crash):

C:/DOOM2> play -lan -8250 -128 -null -modem2 -deathmatch -respawn -level17 -allkeys -allguns

I would say that this was better than Goko because despite having to crawl behind both computers and type in this crazy shit, it at least started a game 100% of the time.  Compare that to Goko right now in 2013 where I can only start a game 5% of the time.

My first foray into web-based gaming that I can remember was playing chess on chess.net in 1999.  It was WAY easier to get a game and faster to play a game on there than it is to start and play a game on Goko.
