Puzzles and Challenges / New Dominion A-Z Blitz Quiz
« on: March 04, 2012, 09:36:37 pm »
Hey gang, I just made a new Dominion quiz on Sporcle!  It is quite tough but doable, and you have to think fast.  Name one card per letter of the alphabet in under one minute.  Good luck!

And this:

Jury (Action - Attack) ($5)
All other players reveal the top card of their deck.  You decide whether the other players should discard the revealed card or put it into their hand.  If they put it into their hand, you may gain a copy of the card on your deck if it is not a victory card.

(I took out the part about your own card because it was too much.  I also added the no-gaining-victory clause.  I think this card balances well because you can significantly improve yourself for the long term by gaining power cards but you must do so at a reasonable short-term cost of empowering the opponent's hand.)

And this:

Warden (Action-Attack) ($4)
+2 cards
You may reveal up to 2 curses from your hand and trash them.  If you don’t reveal any curses, then each other player gains a curse.

And this:

Witness (Action) ($4)
- The player to your left reveals his hand.  You may gain a copy of a card that he is holding that is not a victory card.

Prosecutor can be made more reasonable by restricting it to "each player with at least 5 cards in his hand".  Also, I don't see why you can't name a Victory card.
Good suggestion.  Also, that wording is left over from a previous draft of the card.  It doesn't need to be there, you're right.

That said, targeted discard is really strong, and attacks that do nothing for you aren't common.  I'd say give it a small vanilla bonus and bump it up to $5.

How about this:

Prosecutor (Action – Attack) ($5)
+2 cards
- Name a card.  Then, each player with at least 5 cards in hand reveals their hand.  If they reveal any copies of that card, they must discard one of them immediately.

Nono that's fine footnote.  I appreciate the feedback.  Everything you say makes sense.  I know Attorney is ridiculous...I think I just wanted to do something ridiculous  :)  The rest of the feedback makes sense.  Some of the cards definitely need some mitigation on their swinginess i.e. no gaining victory cards.  I'm glad that at least a few of them got the "interesting" nod  8)  You definitely have a strong feel for how things will play, much stronger than me.  I'm still working on that, but just the act of writing the deck was a great exercise for me in understanding the nature of cards.

Well-put ftl.  That all makes sense.  The conditions were right in that game I attached, but the ultimate success of the engine as a pin are definitely condition-reliant.  It CAN be a full pin, but if the opponent sees it coming or if other kingdom conditions apply, then it could also be a partial pin or it could even fail completely.  Best-case scenario is assembling the engine before the opponent gains a King's Court...you're most likely in good shape at that point...but even then, depending on the kingdom, there could be myriad ways that the opponent could play strongly through his 2-card hands.  In a kingdom with no +card action cards available, this engine would probably be a very strong strategy.  Thanks for the feedback!

breaking the combo is really pretty easy: just hold on to a Masquerade and play that.

That defense is not quite so easy against this engine because this engine can add extra Farming Villages that are both unnecessary to the engine AND don't hurt the engine at the same time.  So even if my opponent did the play-a-Masquerade defense I could just keep passing him my extraneous Farming Villages while I am breaking him down. Right?

It's not quiiiite as effective as KC/KC/Goons/Masq because your opponent still has a 2-card turn to play...but he's going to have to reduce his deck by three cards every turn.  So unless he can end the game on those 2-card turns, he has no outs.

Game Reports / New Death Engine?!?!
« on: March 02, 2012, 12:17:20 am »
I've seen stuff about the glitch/death engine of King's Court/King's Court/Goons/Masquerade which forces your opponent to hand over his entire deck...but I've never heard anything about this next engine that I just stumbled into, and it did the same thing.  (And' it's easier to assemble.)

The engine is: King's Court/Masquerade/Farming Village/Bishop.

First you play the FV.  (Having more than one is OK, just play them all to get them out of the way.)  Next, if you have anything else that has come into the hand from FV, trash it with Bishop.  (This is how you hone in on completing the engine...Bishop just keeps trashing whatever you have that isn't part of the engine.)  Finally, you are left with just KC/Masq in your hand, forcing the opponent to hand over three cards.  Trash the first two so you aren't giving any cards back.  On his third card, keep the card so you can play Bishop next turn and have something to trash that isn't your KC or Masq.  (And you get some bonus VP tokens to boot.)

I am pretty sure this engine leaves the opponent absolutely no outs.  Even if he can gain at least 3 cards per turn for a while, he eventually will not be able to.  You will obliterate his entire deck.

Thoughts?  And is this new or has someone found this before?  I haven't seen it anywhere but I certainly haven't read everything there is to read.

wouldn't care.  I've ended games numerous times like that when I don't have the +buy for the last province, but am ahead enough in points to give it to them.
I don't think he's talking about the giving the province, which is not only not an insulting move but actually the correct play. It's doing that and buying a curse when you could've just bought the province instead.

Exactly.  I had $9.  I could have just bought the Province, but instead I needlessly handed it over to my opponent (because I'm so NICE  ;) ) and I spent the money on a shiny new curse.  WanderingWinder, why is this the "correct" play?  It would be different if I didn't have enough money to buy the Province and I was doing what I needed to do to close the game...but there's only 1 Province left and I could have either bought it myself or handed it over and won either way, so I don't understand why handing it over is "correct"?  It's just showboating.

#dominiondick is in the house!  I just pulled the greatest dick move of my career.  My question is, can I really be a dick if I let my playing do the talking and don't actually say anything?  Check out my last turn.

Is that funny or is that dick?  You lol'd...admit it...

Moneylender doesn't necessarily give $3 when you play it so I'm not counting it.
Fixed Duke.
Eliminated the highway/colony question and replaced it with something else.  Couldn't word it right no matter how I tried.
Thanks!

And Apprentice can put 11. So it depends how you interpret the 'or'.
Changed the question to 12.  My intent was to eliminate Apprentice since it's already the answer to other questions.

Counting House and, technically, Crossroads can put 11 or more cards into your hand at once.

Cellar too :)
Interesting point.  I'll change "put" to "add" so this doesn't count.

Nothing technical about it...these count!  I added them in.  Thanks.

Dominion Articles / Re: Duke
« on: February 27, 2012, 07:01:14 pm »
The optimal sequence for Duke/Duchy gaining order, based purely on VP's-per-gain and not on other game factors, is as follows (points in parenthesis):

1. Duchy (3)
2. Duchy (3)
3. Duchy (3)
4. Duchy (3)
5. Duke (4)

From this point forward, on your even numbered gains you will score the same number of points with either card.  On gain #6, either a Duke or a Dutchy will net you 4 points.  To maximize points from each gain from here on, you must gain the OTHER card on your odd gains that you acquired on the preceding even gain.  Otherwise you will leave points on the table.

6. Duke (4) - either card is worth 4
7. Duchy (5) - opposite of gain #6.  Note that a Duke would only have been worth 4 here.
8. Duchy (5) - either card is worth 5
9. Duke (6) - opposite of gain #8.  Note that a Duchy would only have been worth 5 here.

Nice quiz!

Native Village can put 7 or more cards into your hand.

Envoy requires your opponent to name a card. Well, to choose one. Maybe not technically a right answer.

I got 45, but only cause I ran out of time. Sporcle quizzes and Netbook-shaped browsers are not friends.
Good points, thanks!  And yeah, Sporcle has a major problem with smaller screens.

Thanks for all of the feedback everyone!  I spent a lot of time on it but I knew I would probably have a few errors to fix.  I am making adjustments to the quiz now.  Believe me, I agonized over the wording of some of these questions for quite a while.  There are obviously a good deal of nuances that need to be accounted for in wording.  Keep the feedback coming and enjoy!

Hey gang!  I just made a Sporcle Quiz for Dominion!  There are already a couple of quizzes which are just naming the cards.  This quiz asks you to name specific cards based on the card's characteristics i.e. "Name a card that only trashes treasure" or "name a treasure card that can be worth $10 or more".  This quiz is the first of its kind on Sporcle.  Enjoy!
