Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss - Archer
« on: November 08, 2022, 03:38:47 pm »
1. Which card do you hide?

2. Did any actual archers out there notice that the archer on the card...
A. Has the arrow knocked on the wrong side of the bow?
B. Is holding the arrow with their thumb(?!) instead of between their first two fingers
C. The bow has no table at all.  The arrow is just floating in space.

It's a pretty uninformed drawing of an archer.  Compare to Noble Brigand, who also has the arrow on the wrong side of the bow lol but at least they're using a finger-table to balance the arrow in place, and they appear to be gripping the arrow in a manner that would actually succeed.

Rules Questions / War error?
« on: February 02, 2021, 08:52:09 am »
This might be a bug in the online game or a rule I'm not understanding:

From Game #66121914
I'm D.

Turn 6 - Kris8
K plays a Skulk.
K gets +1 Buy.
K takes War.
D receives War.
D reveals a Silver,
3 Estates, a Gold and 3 Coppers and finally Skulk.
D trashes a Skulk.
D discards 3 Coppers, a Silver, a Gold and 3 Estates.
K discards War.

I took War and the first card I revealed was a Silver, which costs $3.  Why didn't I trash the Silver?

There was no price reduction in effect.

War is: "Reveal cards from your deck until revealing one costing $3 or $4.  Trash it and discard the rest".

Dominion General Discussion / Not enough village in Menagerie?
« on: March 22, 2020, 12:41:10 pm »
Is anyone else finding that when they play with "Extra Menagerie" online, you're getting games with lots of terminals and no village?  It seems that in Menagerie there aren't enough villages to cover all the terminals, so when you're playing with Extra Menagerie you get lots of games heavy with terminals and no village support.

Dominion General Discussion / Promo card releases?
« on: February 05, 2020, 12:52:13 pm »
I'm wondering if there's a schedule anywhere of upcoming promo card releases?
Specifically I'm wondering if there will be any available at PaxEast in a couple of weeks.  But more generally, is there anywhere that promo releases get announced?
Thanks!

Dominion General Discussion / Defining the difference between levels
« on: December 19, 2019, 09:50:37 pm »
For the past two years I've plateaued.  I bounce around L52 and L53, rank 500-700.  I never go lower and I also never go higher.  Like anyone else I play higher ranked players often and sometimes win, but I haven't put my finger on what makes them consistently better.  If I could, then maybe I would be consistently better!

So that got me thinking... are there any simple and elegant distinctions of players at different levels?

Here's my offering:

At the start of the game...
L47 and below: Often doesn't see the combo at all.
L48-50: Usually sees the combo and always goes for it.  Doesn't often maximize it.
L51-53: Always sees the combo and goes for it.  Often maximizes it.
L54-56: Maximizes the combo if they play it, but also sees the "Or...".  Knows when the combo won't be the best strategy and will pick out a different optimal strategy instead.  Transcends recognition and maximization of the combo and thinks about the combo critically.
L57-58:  Transcends recognition and maximization of the combo and thinks about the combo critically, and also sometimes comes up with completely original alternate strategies.  Often can envision the whole game before it happens.
L59 and higher: Almost always can envision the whole game before it happens.  Plans for turn 7 on turn 1.  Maximizes fundamental strategies if using them, or can always invent something else if needed.

That's my best shot at it.  Would love to hear what others think!

Dominion General Discussion / Combo: Explorer/Captain
« on: October 01, 2019, 02:46:39 pm »

Not an effective gameplay combo at all.  But when you look at them next to each other, how can you not think that they're on the same ship... sharing the same quarters...

Rules Questions / Why did Summons fail on Blessed Village?
« on: April 27, 2019, 02:22:32 pm »
Can anyone explain what it means that Blessed Village was "covered up" here and why Summons would lose track of it?  Thanks!

Turn 8 - Lasttime
L plays a Blessed Village.
L draws a card.
L gets +2 Actions.
L plays a Priest.
L gets +$2.
L trashes an Estate.
L plays a Silver and a Copper. (+$3)
L buys a Summon.
L gains a Blessed Village.
L takes The Swamp's Gift.
L receives The Swamp's Gift.
L gains a Will-o'-Wisp.
Summon loses track of Blessed Village (it was covered up).
L discards The Swamp's Gift.
L draws 5 cards.

Goko Dominion Online / A Christmas Eve Gift from Making Fun
« on: December 24, 2016, 09:39:36 pm »
While Christmas Eve drunk-chatting with other drunk Dominion players in the Making Fun chat, I posted:

"Isotropic was 3x better than this, and that was built and hosted by some guy working for free in his ba***t."

Turns out Making Fun auto-censored "semen" from the middle of the word "basement".

Hilarious!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Game Reports / Good example of Native Village+Bridge (Combo #27)
« on: August 03, 2016, 04:05:25 pm »
Waited until the last possible moment to push ignition...and it worked!  Opponent already had 5 Provinces when I did it.  I pulled down 3 Provinces and 5 Duchies on the last turn for the win, just like the article said.  ;D

I love combos like this and Hermit/Market Square where you build up the entire game for one insane turn, and the opponent never sees it coming.

Rules Questions / Swamp Hag + Black Market...gain a curse?
« on: July 27, 2016, 11:51:34 pm »
When you buy from the Black Market with Swamp Hag in play by your opponent, you should gain a curse, right?  This doesn't happen on Dominion Online.  I'm quite certain that other on-buy effects (e.g. Haggler) kick in when you buy from the Black Market, so Swamp Hag should too, yes?

Dominion General Discussion / Dominion's Tragic Flaw?
« on: June 08, 2015, 11:26:38 pm »
Does anyone else feel like the percentage of games that are decided by luck before the Turn 4 shuffle or the Turn 7 shuffle is just too high?  I feel like it's a little more than 50% of all games where the players are of reasonably equal skill, and this just seems like a flaw.

Goko Dominion Online / 4-5 minutes to load while opponent is in game
« on: March 28, 2015, 05:50:56 pm »
For the past two weeks, all of my games have been taking 4-5 minutes to load.  Meanwhile, my opponent is in the room.  I always finish loading and enter the room to an annoyed message from my opponent wondering when will I make my first move.

Does anybody know how to fix this?  Thanks!

Game Reports / 11-pile game: There goes the kingdom.
« on: February 21, 2015, 12:03:24 am »
OK I admit, Microman was nice enough to be an accomplice in this once the game started to get silly.  It was fun though.  The last turn is probably the longest single-turn script I've ever seen.  The entire kingdom is gone at the end of the game and estates are too.

Game Reports / Ambassador slugfest makes cool Victory Points Chart
« on: February 14, 2015, 06:01:04 pm »
Moderately epic win, with the most Ambassadoring I've ever had in one game.  But what I like about this game is the Victory Point Chart.  Ambassador games makes some pretty cool charts.

Hey gang!  My 5th Dominion quiz is now up on Sporcle!  This one is for people who appreciate a little mental math!  Of course, you can also use pencil and paper and even a calculator, but I did these all in my head so it's not that bad!

Report your scores and let me know if I screwed anything up!

« on: January 06, 2014, 10:26:33 pm »
Nothing like rocking a Transmute / Great Hall combo for the win.  Duchies paved with gold!  What a great card, Transmute...gotta love those hybrid synergies ;)

Dominion General Discussion / Mega Kingdom Strategy
« on: January 04, 2014, 10:49:55 am »
You play a two-player game with EVERY kingdom card except Black Market available.  All other usual rules apply: 10 each of all actions and treasures, 8 each of VP cards, game ends when either all Colonies, Provinces, or three other piles are depleted.

What is your strategy?

19
So I was just reading the PDF rules for Guilds and it has pictures of Copper, Silver, Gold, Estate, Duchy, Province, and Curse that all feature actual art on the card.  Are these cards available now and if so, where?  Is this how they're being printed now?  Thanks!

Dominion General Discussion / Worst. Setup. Ever.
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:17:26 am »
Trying to come up with the kingdom that would involve the most painful setup possible:

Young Witch, Black Market, Hermit, Urchin, Marauder, Familiar, Island, Native Village, Trade Route, Baker, Fairgrounds.
(Tournament, Pirate Ship, Goons, Monument, Bishop in Black Market deck.  Colony and Platinum in use.  Shelters in use.)

This would necessitate the use of:
- Room on the table for 28 f-in piles.  11 action cards, 4 Victory Cards (Estate/Duchy/Province/Colony), 5 treasures (Copper/Silver/Gold/Plat/Potion), Curses, Spoils pile, Ruins Pile, Mercenary Pile, Madman Pile, Prize Pile, Black Market Deck, trash.
- Four types of tokens (VP, Coin, Trade Route, Pirate Ship)
- Four types of mats (Island, Native Village, Trade Route, Pirate Ship)

Also include all duration cards in the BM deck just to clog up the table more during gameplay :)

The Fairgrounds is mostly to be nice, since you might be looking at 12 points apiece for them in this kingdom!

Puzzles and Challenges / New Sporcle Quiz: Click A Card...
« on: December 27, 2013, 02:10:41 am »
Hey gang.  With Goko being down again, I figured why not make the best of it and make a new Dominion Sporcle quiz.  This is my fourth Dominion quiz and is the only the second clickable Dominion quiz on Sporcle besides my last one.  Feel free to report scores and feedback.  Good luck!

Dominion Cards: Click A Card...

My previous quizzes:
Dominion Cards: Hard Mode (Name the card based on limited information from the card.)

Dominion Cards A-Z Blitz (Name one card starting with each letter of the alphabet in under two minutes.)

Dominion Super Quiz (Name a card that...)

Goko Dominion Online / First ever online gaming better than Goko?
« on: November 22, 2013, 10:00:11 pm »
My first online gaming experience came in 1996, when my dad ran a null modem cable on the floor in the middle of the hallway from one room to the other to connect our two PC's so we could play the hot new "Deathmatch" mode on Doom 2.  To start a game, BOTH players at the same time had to type in an identical string of commands into DOS, with different commands for every game parameter which looked something like this (and if you screwed up even one character it would crash):

C:/DOOM2> play -lan -8250 -128 -null -modem2 -deathmatch -respawn -level17 -allkeys -allguns

I would say that this was better than Goko because despite having to crawl behind both computers and type in this crazy shit, it at least started a game 100% of the time.  Compare that to Goko right now in 2013 where I can only start a game 5% of the time.

My first foray into web-based gaming that I can remember was playing chess on chess.net in 1999.  It was WAY easier to get a game and faster to play a game on there than it is to start and play a game on Goko.

Goko Dominion Online / Extension only kicks in occasionally?
« on: October 28, 2013, 07:44:38 pm »
I play on Chrome and I have the extension.  The extension only kicks in about 30-40% of the time.  I can't put my finger on what makes the difference between it working and not.  Thoughts?  Thanks.

Game Reports / Trouncing Wandering Winder (video)
« on: October 10, 2013, 10:54:16 pm »
I trounced WW and he posted video of it.  One of the more satisfying things that has ever happened to me playing online Dominion.

Lest I be remiss, I must point out that it feels so good because WW is so good.  I think this makes my lifetime record against WW something like 3-20.  I am definitely not better than him, just got a win this time.

Thanks for posting the video!

Love the comments as my deck furtively gathers strength...
3:03 "I feel like I'm just winning here"
3:18 "Those [VP] chips aren't gonna be worth a thing"
4:51 "He has 12 points there, but I'm really not that worried"
8:17 "I'm actually impressed"

Puzzles and Challenges / Dominion Cards: Hard Mode (Sporcle)

Hey gang.  Just finished up a new Sporcle quiz.  It is pretty tough.  You are given limited information from a card, and must name the card.  Some of the differences are very subtle, so think it through and click carefully!  Good luck!
