Alternative
Action - $4
+1 card
+1 action
When you play an action, put this card in your hand

This is way too powerful at any price. Gives any cantrip a Lab and any nonterminal a cantrip. Two of this in hand allow you to draw your deck (just play one and get the other back while drawing a card). Even if the recovering actions are restricted to "different than this" it would be really powerful at $4, and probably also at $5. Maybe $6 or $7 could work. The terminal version seems much more interesting instead of being a whole strategy in itself.

Also if you have 2 you can draw your whole deck. Removed it from the OP.

The card with the type Silver would ideally be:
  • Very different from Silver
  • Usually not better than Silver
  • Not something you want too many of
  • Provides an interesting strategic dimension to existing Silver gainers

I'm thinking a balanced $2 card, which gives it an interesting element of being cheaper for Feodums while ensuring that it's not taken over Silver lightly. It should be non spammable, and providing $ seems like the territory of Silver. It's a fairly narrow design space left behind.

First attempt:

Silver Statue
Action/Silver - $2
+2 cards
Trash a card you have in play (counting this)
---
When you trash this +1 VP

As a oneshot, it allows Trading post to function better as deck thinner. You can also trash it with that, JOAT or Trader to get the VP in a pinch. It's a better card to lose to a Noble Brigand. It's an alt VP idea to make you less affected in a Bureaucrat mirror match. You can trash Squires with it to get the when trash effect.

The card itself is a better estate except for late game (the only time you buy Estates anyway).

+2 cards, +1 action, discard a card was proven to be too strong for $4 (and too weak for $5 as mostly worse than Lab). I don't think the flipped order changes that.

See, this is what I don't understand. Why don't you think the flipped order changes that? There's a reason Warehouse is usually much better than Cellar, and it's not that it locks you into sifting exactly 3 cards. It's that you draw before you discard. This example isn't as extreme, but I think it might be enough to bump it down into $4 territory.

The difference is the likelihood of having dead cards to discard. Having 2 more cards is a decent boost, but not that significant (compared to cellar/warehouse), and will probably just come off as frustrating more than anything else.

It probably is balanced at $4 though.

As for the chaining, it's really valuable in Cultist because the first +1 action does a lot for +Cards, but a 2nd +1 action is usually not worth much, usually bumping the price up $1. Chaining would be sort of halfway, but it depends on the card. You could use it to seal the deal on a card that's in an awkward deadlock between cost ranges.

Putting those facts together:

Borough
Action - $5
+2 cards
+1 action
Discard a card
You may play a Borough from your hand.

Oppressor
Action - $5
+$2
Each player may discard any number of cards. +1 buy for each card you discard this way.
Each other player looks through his discard pile and may reveal 2 cards costing $2 or less, placing them anywhere in his deck. If he doesn't, he gains a Curse.

I was trying to think of an attack that would just slow you down without affecting your current turn or forcing you to gain anything. However there's accountability issues so there's the curse, and swing issues so there's the optional discard (which could turn the attack into a ghost ship variant). The +buys are so the discard isn't arbitrary for you in games without Library/Watchtower/Jack/Tunnel.

While this is in play, when you play another action, you may put this card on top of your deck.

One card that seems missing in a thorough one shot/instant vs delayed gratification expansion would be a card of this form:

Card:
Effect 1
(You may) trash this
---
When you trash this, Effect 2

You can play the card, but you may want to play it with a good TFB card instead, or you could use it in a pinch with an early game trasher. I don't know where it would fit (possibly on "fund") but if you do end up going for the large expansion, that would be something to consider.

Oh wow that haggler interaction is nuts, although you are still limited by your +buys. I like the crazy interactions with "when gain" but it seems too easy to make large sums of money, even with only $1 per gain.

Back to the drawing board.

Troll Bridge
Action: $5
+1 buy
---
While this is in play, when you gain a card, +$2

It's a Princess, except you don't get the bonus for the first card you buy. Has a few other interactions. Is it still overpowered?

Puzzles and Challenges / Most VP in 3 Turns With Zaps
« on: February 22, 2013, 05:03:24 am »
With a fully zapped starting deck (Starting with 7 Silvers and up to 3 Duchies), what's the most VP you can get in 3 turns. Assume that you go first and your opponent opens Silver/Silver. Possession and Outpost turns count towards the turn limit.

BENCHMARK: 25 points
With
Turn 1: Open Nomad Camp
Turn 2: Play Nomad Camp, Buy Duchy/Duchy
Turn 3: Play Nomad Camp, Buy Duke/Duke

Wording issues aside, initial playtesting indicates that the card is weak. The next version I test will be this:

Committee
Types: Action
Cost: $5
+$2. Reveal the top 5 cards of your deck. The player to your left names a card. Choose a revealed card that is not the named card; trash it or gain a copy of it.

So you put the other 4 cards back? "Gain or Trash" means this card is almost always very useful.

With Convocation in the set there'll be 3 Lab variants, as well as Inventor which sort of occupies the same space. I like the card but if you can get Boycott to work it will really fit in with the set, as it is definitely all about the long term strategy considerations.

1514
I like the concept

Another idea

BLESSED
Place any kingdom card costing $2 or $3 on top of this. This kingdom card may be revealed to prevent the effects of an attack.

With Convocation, if you reveal an Action, a Treasure and a Tunnel, do you have the option of discarding the Tunnel? I would think not.
If you reveal 2 Coppers and a Tunnel, do you have the option of discarding the Tunnel? I would think so.

It just seems like an interesting quirk.

Trader only gets revealed once you know what card you're gaining.

However you have to reveal Moat as soon as the Philanthropist is played, and you won't get your Gold if you do this (or have a lighthouse in play)

Is there a list of known combos out there? There may be a way to mathematically find the set of 25 with the most potential combos/interactions.

Rats!

P: Vineyard, Scrying Pool, Familiar
2: Squire
3: Forager, Watchtower, Develop, Masquerade, Ambassador, Hermit
4: Rats,Death Cart, Salvager, Trader, Fortress, Bishop, Feodum, Jack of All Trades, Ironmonger
5: Upgrade, Junk Dealer, Apprentice, Graverobber, Cultist, Governor

EDIT:

Some unintentional combos I noticed:
*Trader/Squire/Jack of All Trades + Feodum
*Bishop/Fortress, Apprentice/Fortress
*Watchtower+Squire/Feodum
It's a very combo heavy set overall.

Embargo
Action - $2
+$2
Trash this
---
When you trash this, put an embargo token on any supply pile. When a player buys a card, he gains a curse per embargo token on that pile.

Pillage
Action - $5
Trash this
Each other player with 5 or more cards in hand reveals his hand and discards a card that you choose.
---
When you trash this, gain 2 Spoils from the Spoils Pile

These 2 don't really change the card except for TR/KC shenanigans, but give them a lot more flexibility. The latter would be especially thematic for Dark Ages.

A more shonky one:

Treasure Map:
Action - $4
Trash this
---
When you trash this, you may trash another card from your hand. If it's a Treasure Map, gain 4 Golds, putting them on top of your deck.

It gives the card a bit more flexibility and strategy. Also a hand of 3 Treasure Maps now gives you 8 golds plus a free trashing on the side.

Powder Keg
Action/Attack/Looter - $3
Trash this
Each other player discards down to 3 cards in hand and gains a Ruins, putting it in his hand
---
When you trash this, +2 cards, trash 2 cards from your hand.

If you use it with intent then it's a decent attack, but you might just set it off some other way instead. It can cause a chain reaction too.
