Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Town Commons (another shared resource card)

Another interesting idea. I'd had a similar common-pool of cards idea at one time, but I couldn't think of a way to make it work. This card may very well be workable, and if it's not, hopefully it can be tweaked. I very much like the idea.

just playtested it very quickly. quite fun to use, though i can't try it with other Dominion expansions other than original and Intrigue. i was thinking of reducing it to $5 as well but having looked up Band of Misfits, i'm partial to keeping it at $6. Misfits gets to play a $4 card which is better but seems overall less versatile than Conform, and you don't get to keep the card you play.

Band of Misfits also can't be used as a Victory or Treasure card. However, Band of Misfits has the advantage that sometimes you don't want to actually gain the card it mimics. You just want to use it as a Smugglers or Moneylender when it's appropriate without junking up your deck with the actual card.

I'd also compare this version of Conform to Explorer, which is a $5 card that gains a Silver to your hand. Conform can't gain Gold like Explorer sometimes can, but it is non-terminal and much more flexible. I'd try it at $5, but it may have to stay at $6. There is also a chance that it may not work at any cost.

I try not to pick nits, but it probably should say "-$1 per Diamond in the supply, to a minimum of 0.  Return this card to the supply."

Otherwise, with 9 Diamonds in supply, the Diamond is worth -$3.  Can I buy a Copper with -$3?

Read the top post more carefully. There are only 6 Diamonds in the Supply.

Anyone else having the adventures very inconsistently load for them?  Now that the difficulty is to "normal dominion" mostly, sometimes I play the AI when I think I may be interrupted, and I figure I might as well grind out those VPs.

But usually when I go to start an adventure game, after the kingdom/starting deck screen I hit "start", the screen blacks out, and it just sits there.

Anyone have a fix for this?

Dang, that's been an ongoing problem. I thought they'd fixed it. Have you tried clearing your cache?

Devices are HTML-5 ready goko has just decided to do somethings that mobiles don't support. And well if your having performance issues on your pc think about how your weaker smartphone would feel.

Well, to be fair, I'm having absolutely no performance issues with Goko on my desktop and my laptop recently. Just for fun, I tried playing it on my iPhone over 3G today. It technically runs, but is still unplayable.

I like it! I have no way of knowing if it's balanced without testing it, but the idea is very cool. I may have to rename my 'Diamond Deposit' card so as not to conflict with this awesome card!

This has been suggested before, and I think it's a reasonable card. You could technically get the value up past 6 VP, either by playing with 5 or 6 players or just by emptying more than one pile on your last turn.

I am pretty disappointed that
1. can only run on a computer
2. but with resolution stuck at 1024*768. I cannot even make it full screen in a browser window...

So, html5 and cross platform is just a huge hype and doesn't really mean a thing, right?

From what I can tell, yes.

It's easy to blame Goko, but I wonder how much of this is just mobile devices not being HTML5-ready.

Interesting idea, but I'm afraid it's going to scale badly with the number of players.

EDIT: Also, if at least 4 Victory cards are revealed, you can gain another Conform into your hand, play that one, gain another one, etc. until the entire Conform stack is empty.

« on: December 05, 2012, 01:33:46 pm »
Yeah, I think you're right. The cases where you can trash more than one card with Broker(s) in play are rare and you can probably do it only a few times per game. Maybe it could be a hard work to count and remember all coins after playing Loans and Counterfeits. Only in an RL-Game of course. But that's sadly the only way to play all the good cards from this forum.

Yeah, the tracking issue is my biggest concern at this point. Hopefully play testing will show that it's not a big deal, but if it is, I may have to scrap the card entirely.

When DON'T you trash cards with an action card? Or are you specifically trying to rule out Counterfeit and Farmland?

Don't forget Loan. Also, there's a one-shot Treasure card in the set I'm designing this for. There are probably other official examples I'm forgetting as well.

I think this card needs a little something extra for when there's no trashing available.
And because of that I thought the card needs the trash function for itself (similar to graverobber and many other cards). I wouldn't never buy that card for 5 if there is no trasher available and if there's a trasher then the filter-bonus is of little use anyway. But that's not too bad.

Right, that was my thinking. The filter bonus is more useful when there isn't trashing.

But isn't a start with chapel not a bit too strong and also swingy? What about Forge or Count? I really would limit it to max +$1 or +$2 per trashing.

That's what I thought, too, but after consideration I don't think it's that bad when compared to what's already out there. Consider a Chapel/Market Square opening. That can get you a Gold on turn 3 or 4 if they collide. If Broker and Chapel collide, you get a $5 of your choice. That's often going to be better than a Gold, but not by much. Sometimes it'll be worse. There is the argument that you actually need a 5/2 split to open Broker/Chapel, whereas anyone can open Chapel/Market Square. Also, if Chapel and Broker don't collide, it's a heck of a lot better than if Chapel and Market Square don't collide. Still, I don't think this is any more swingy than a lot of other 5/2 openings, like Mountebank/Chapel or Mint/Fool's Gold.

As for Count, you'd have to buy Broker and Count, two $5 cards, then have them collide together in a hand with no other cards you want to keep. Sure, you could put a card back on your deck, but that means you'll only trash 2 cards and will only be able to buy a $4 card after trashing.

With Forge, you're not going to trash a massive number of cards with it more than once or twice per game. If you can draw a Broker or two, and Forge, and a bunch of cards to trash, and some +Buy (to spend all the Broker money) into your hand at once, you deserve to buy some Provinces.

I'm going to playtest this some more soon and it could be that you're 100% right about it being too powerful a combo. I'm hoping that the fact that Broker doesn't give +Cards (limiting the number of cards you can mass-trash), and the fact that there's a lot of competition at the $5 level will make it a good, but reasonable option.

EDIT: If it does turn out to be too powerful, I will look for a way to limit it somehow. The 'when you trash cards with an Action card' wording seems a little fuzzy to me, though. 'When you trash cards' is technically well-defined, but not intuitive. 'With an Action card' isn't necessarily clear. I'll try to brainstorm something with a similar effect.

Well, not a lot of interest in this one, which is fine. I have been posting a lot of cards lately, trying to find the best one for a specific slot.

I think this card needs a little something extra for when there's no trashing available.

Broker
Types: Action

+1 Action. +$2. Look at the top card of your deck; discard it or put it back.

While this is in play, when you trash a card, +$1.

It's also good to remember that Gold+Estate isn't always worse than Silver+Silver.  If you have good sifting, I think the Gold is preferable.

I strongly agree with this. I recently played a game with Beyond Awesome where he went Mine/Hoard and I went Storeroom/Hoard. Let me tell you, Storeroom/Hoard is pretty awesome.

Nice card!
I have a suggestion to make it self-supporting:
Quote
Broker
Types: Action
Cost: $4
+1 Action
Trash a card.
-------------
While this is in play, when you trash cards with an action card, +$1.
Don't know exactly if the wording is precisely enough. First it should be a slow trasher which is at least not terminal. Often very useful. Then every time you trash cards (the number of trashed card doesn't matter to limit the effect) with an action card (also this Broker) or another card you'll get one coin. It is also stackable what makes it strong, maybe it should cost 5, too. In this version you won't get the coins with a Loan for example but that would make the playing and counting easier.

Hmm, I like the 'when you trash cards' functionally, but I'm not sure it's intuitive for most players. I'll have to think about the rest of this version a bit more. I worry that it's a bit too close to Forager.

Made to work with one-shots, but could be very useful in any game with heavy trashing. It also has a niche usage as vanishing money (for Library, etc.). Opinions? Any ideas on a better top half for the card?

All these edge cases aside, the later it is in the game, the more likely I am to give my opponent a Swindler. Swindler best on the first few turns when you're likely to hit Copper. If your opponent hits your Province with a Swindler, that's bad for them a lot more often than it is for you, especially if it was the last Province and they have $8 to spend.

A general rule for me is, if we've started greening, giving my opponents Swindlers is good. (Obviously there are boards where this is not the case.)

Oh, I somehow didn't saw that clause. Maybe you should let it out because this is what makes the card more interesting.
But now it seems pretty weak. Maybe if you add: "You might gain a card costing up to $3" or "You might gain a Silver".

I might be misunderstanding you, but what you're suggesting is to add a gain in addition to the one you get for trashing a card, right?

One feature to be aware of, while playtesting, is that you can with little opportunity cost trash province and gain province, thus speeding the game when you are ahead. Ok you can do it even with the first version, but the opportunity cost seems much higher; and also there are other cards that allow this (Salvager, Remodel) but those are terminals.

Yeah, I'd considered that. But as you say, the opportunity cost is high for the original version of the card.

I also just realized that my version of the card that trashes two cards and gains cards costing $2 more into hand could potentially allow you to activate Treasure Maps on turn 3. I'll have to think about whether that's a dealbreaker.

I agree with Bron on some level but it can be pretty powerful. Open 5/2 with Exchange/nothing and hope to draw it again in a hand with 3 Estates in Turn 3. You can trash now all 3 Estates and one Copper becomes a Silver which you can even use for a $2 cost card. And it can pretty handy otherwise, especially with on trash effects. A hand of Exchange+Fortress could empty the Exchange pile.

Actually, Exchange can't gain other Exchanges. I put that clause in there specifically to avoid situations where you could run out the entire pile in one turn.

Hmm, good points, Bron. Thanks for the feedback!

If the current version appears weak after further playtesting, I'll definitely consider making changes. It would be...convenient...if it were to cost $5, though. How does this version strike you?

Quote
Exchange
Types: Action

+1 Action. Trash this. Trash 2 cards from your hand. For each trashed card, gain a card costing up to $2 more than it, putting the gained cards into your hand.

It basically just takes your idea and doubles it.

Well, Goko is an HTML5 game company. That's their entire schtick. So it's unreasonable to expect them to create a non-HTML5 version of Dominion. Basically, Jay decided to take a chance on a completely unproven "technology of the future" and we're paying the price. HTML5 is not a mature technology yet and some browsers and mobile devices aren't equipped to handle it. Also, I'm guessing their aren't a lot of seasoned HTML5 developers out there, since HTML5 is so new. As a result, we have this snail's pace development.

Still, Goko's doing pretty well at fixing their bugs. They're slowly, very slowly, approaching a good implementation. And I must like Goko's Dominion pretty well, since I play it all the time.

« on: December 03, 2012, 12:25:02 am »
OK, so if you'd rather skip the long intro and skip down to the card, feel free to do so.

After some encouraging feedback, I'm planning on starting work on my second fan expansion, tentatively titled Dominion: Underground. Before that, though, I'm updating my first expansion, Dominion: Enterprise. I'm trying to bring it up to date after the release of Dark Ages, to tweak some of the cards that need tweaking, and to replace some of the more lackluster cards. To that end, I'm trying to replace Cathedral. It's too much like a super-Courtyard and encourages Big Money games a little bit more than I'm comfortable with.

Currently the set doesn't have a trash-for-benefit card, so I'm looking for something to fill that slot. Preferably a one-shot, $5-coster, trash-for-benefit card. To that end, I created Redistrict. After playtesting it and getting feedback from this community, I decided that it wasn't quite cutting it and I couldn't come up with a way to fix the issues it has. One of the issues I had with it is that it encourages you to trash your Action cards, rather than playing them. Sure, Graverobber does that, but in an interesting, fun way. So I wanted my next attempt at this type of card to be something that didn't potentially take up your whole turn and that let you play Actions.

Then it hit me. I'd always considered cards that could gain Action cards into hand to be a bad idea, with the potential to easily creating infinite loops of gaining. But if the card was a one-shot, that potential decreases significantly. So I give you this:

Quote
Exchange
Types: Action
Cost: $5
+1 Action. Trash this. Trash a card from your hand and gain a card costing up to $3 more than the it that is not an Exchange, putting the gained card into your hand.

So it's sort of like a non-terminal, one-shot Expand that puts the gained card into your hand, which actually makes it almost nothing like Expand. It often plays like Band of Misfits because you can choose to gain whatever benefits you most for your current hand. If you already have a terminal Action in your hand, for instance, you can gain a cantrip, village, or Treasure. If you have a couple of Curses or Estates in your hand, trash a Copper, gain a Steward, and trash them.

Anyhow, criticism is always appreciated. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

I feel that the IGG Duchy rush is an unintended consequence of emptying two piles at once.

I mean, I dunno... the on-gain curser didn't have to be a Copper-like treasure.

Hmm, if it had been a Victory card, it wouldn't have emptied two piles at once when it ran out. Not that I'm advocating that specific change.
