Goko Dominion Online / ****! (The Censorship Thread)
« on: December 31, 2012, 03:13:37 pm »
So, werothegreat and I were playing some Rebuild/Saboteur games just now, and I noticed that by censoring very mild 'swear' words, Goko makes me sound like a real foul-mouthed motherf****r.

During the game, it censored me when I cursed my mistakes by saying, "Crap!" That surprised me a bit, but it's understandable. But after our last game, by way of parting I said, "Well, I gotta ******. Hopefully we can continue this later." 10 points if you can guess which fairly innocuous word was censored. Wero, don't give away the answer!  :D

"This is actually already available - when you choose a premade set with empty spaces, there's a 'change random cards' button which keeps the cards in your set and only changes the random cards."

This is nice.

That is very cool.

If someone would like to test Rebuild vs. Saboteur with two real players, I'd love to see the results.

If you want to try that on Goko, I'd be up for it.

Just played a couple games against a bot with Rebuild and Saboteur on the board.  Both times, the bot just ignored Rebuild and bought out the Duchies.  Although, the bot does buy Victory cards a lot more than a human player does.

It seems Saboteur here is mainly a distraction.  The first game, I did hit a Province with Saboteur, but I flubbed my first $5 by mistakenly just buying two Squires.  The second one I got the Rebuilds and the Saboteurs, but I couldn't play either of them often enough, and he kept buying Border Village, gaining a Duchy, ignoring Rebuild and Saboteur.  It seems the bots have preempted my article here and know exactly how to counter Rebuilds.

I think that's actually the bot just playing Border Village badly. The fact that Rebuild was on the board was just a coincidence. The bots seem to prefer Border Village over Gold almost always, and will often pick up a Duchy as their Border Village gain. Often it just ends up grinding their deck to a halt.

I'm not an expert with Rebuild, but I feel like a couple of these points may not be completely accurate.

  • I have very strong doubts about using Saboteur against Rebuild.
Basicly I'm buying a terminal $5 to fight a non-terminal $5. My card isn't doing more then theirs. Whenever they play their card, they get to make this choice on what to name. Whenever I play my card, they get this choice what to replace it with. The worst case scenario is when I hit a Province because then they get yet another Rebuild for free.

I haven't tried Saboteur against Rebuild, but one key point is that Duchies tend to run out. Therefore, if Saboteur does hit Province, you may not be able to grab a Duchy for it. Gaining another Rebuild instead might be useful, but you also might never get to play it.

  • Great halls: they seem quite good to me in a rebuild deck. Without them I'm probably forced to buy some estates into my own deck, and I really don't like that. Buying great halls in stead should be much better.

Adding Estates or Great Halls to your deck keeps you from turning Duchies into Provinces (and Provinces into Colonies). Under most circumstances, I wouldn't buy either unless the endgame was very quickly approaching.

Well, if your putting Rebuild-BM against another BM I wouldn't choose Envoy, I'd pick Embassy or Courtyard.

If you want to contend Duchies early, Envoy isn't the best BM enabler as it can choke pretty hard on Duchies. Normally with Envoy I try to pick up more money than usual and dip into Duchies at the absolute latest moment possible.

Embassy seems like a good card to deal with early Duchies, also because you can more easily get back to Golds and Provinces later. Embassy's price point can be an issue though. Taking two courtyards and rushing Duchies might be viable.

Also, buying Embassies gives your opponent free Silver, which is pretty nice when he's building an economy made to hit $5.

The simulator shows Rebuild BM beats Envoy BM so it has quite a bit of raw power.

What is the simulator's Duchy buying policy when playing with Rebuild? Is it different from the standard BM one?

I've been meaning to mention this for a while, but the site's articles have been getting more and more bloated as time has gone on. We don't need an exhaustive list of interactions for the card. A couple is fine, but this is way too many. It isn't an article so much as a list of combos.

It seems to me that the power of Rebuild is that it allows you to get Provinces (and Colonies) without needing to hit $8 (or $11). Your article mentions that you'll need to buy Duchies, but you should place more emphasis on that. It's really the key point. Once you have your Rebuilds, consider spending all your $5 and even $6 and $7 hands on Duchies.

Because Duchies are so important, Rebuild combos well with cards that let you hit $5 consistently, like Horse Traders, Explorer, etc. It's also good to have sifters, which allow you to cycle to your Rebuilds and discard the Victory cards you want to hit with them.

EDIT: Looks like eHalcyon already hit my major points. Whoops!

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: A few card ideas

[some name]
Action
$3
+2 Cards
You may choose an action card in your hand.  Play it and discard it.

This is basically a really cheap Laboratory that discards your next Action card from play so that you could potentially play it again in the same turn. It's definitely broken, no two ways about it.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Why aren't *you* playing on Goko?
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:59:37 am »
That value is further reduced by the fact that much of the sets aren't available yet.

I don't know if you've been keeping up (and it's cool if you haven't), but Goko has everything except half of Hinterlands, Alchemy, and two of the promos implemented and playable right now. There are a few bugs, but most only matter in obscure corner cases, and I have faith that even those will be fixed. Goko's been pretty responsive when it comes to fixing bugs and implementing features.

I understand that the main thrust of your post is that you don't want to pay for a service that may not be around in a year, but the irony is that if you buy into it, it's that much more likely to be around. For what it's worth, I play all my online Dominion there and enjoy it immensely. I haven't logged onto isotropic for months.

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: The other seven cards
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:00:25 am »
Seven cards left over?  That's exactly what this fan card of mine was designed to account for.  Hmm...

That would be cool, but if onigame's randomizer app can be believed, Guilds only has 13 Kingdom cards and I'm guessing that none of them is a stack of 20 this time.

No text mode, no point counter, no veto mode.

So the problem is that it's more like actual Dominion. Gotcha.

So what was the concern, exactly?  That the existing $7s were just too powerful?  Or that any card at $7 would inherently be too powerful?  The latter seems mistaken; any achievable cost can be "balanced" (even though most of them won't be worth doing).

The concern at the time was mostly that the 'hole' at $7 was serving a purpose. For instance it prevented you gaining Provinces with Upgrade. Same thing with the hole at $1. That's why it's not a big deal if a few cards are at these costs. Most games still have those holes.

EDIT: I'm not trying to imply that the game would be bad if those holes weren't usually there, but certain cards are balanced around usually having them, I believe.

Rules Questions / Re: Are Curse gains from Embargo tokens separate events?
« on: December 20, 2012, 02:59:08 pm »
Let's say the Province pile has 2 Embargo tokens on it. If I have a Haggler in play and I buy a Province, could I gain a Curse, gain a Gold from the Haggler, then gain the other Curse?
No. Embargo triggers once, giving you a pile of Curses.

Really? Then what about this post: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1701.msg27082#msg27082
It seems to contradict this.

That's not related.  In that thread, he was talking about how you can reveal Trader twice because you have to gain two curses, and the revelation of Trader is a choice for each time you gain a card.  You still have to resolve /all/ of the curses being gained (or gains being subverted) at the same time.

Rather, you must resolve all the Curse gains in sequence, without resolving other on-buy effects in between them.

Seconding Bureaucrat. When you're going for alt-VP, playing against it, or especially both, Bureaucrat is your card. I'd buy at least three.

6467
(I haven't read the whole thread, sorry if this has already been mentioned)

This would be interesting for some TfB cards.  Granted, you couldn't use some of them because it has 0 cost and things like Remodel would only give you a 2 cost card.  It would also work well with Gardens, when you buy one of the actions that give cave-ins, you get another card.  And with TfB that gives you cards, you can trash them without losing more points.

Edit: Also, I'm surprised that when Trader was mentioned Watchtower wasn't.  That would also be pretty powerful.

As jamespotter says, trashing a Cave-In returns it to the top of your deck, so trashing them is usually a bad idea. As for the Kingdom cards, I believe trash-for-benefit cards would actually be some of the worst cards to use with them, since you don't want to trash a card that you had to gain a dead card to pick up. They're worth more than their cost indicates, like Grand Market or Cache.

I agree that Gardens could be a nice combo with them. I've also created a Victory card for the set, which will probably be the only card that rewards you for having Cave-Ins.

Quote
Grotto
Types: Victory
Cost: $4
Worth 2 VP, plus 1 VP per 2 Cave-Ins in your deck (rounded down).

When you gain this, gain a Cave-In from the Cave-In pile.

Play Band of Misfits as an Island, it properly removes both cards from your deck but you can't see the BoM on your island mat only the other card you set aside with it.

Well, there's a general bug right now where Band of Misfits sometimes becomes invisible. This sounds like an instance of that. Is there an empty space where it should be?

Dominion Articles / Re: Cartographer
« on: December 18, 2012, 06:07:25 pm »
Great article. I'm surprised you list terminal draw under anti-combos, though. For cards that give +3 Cards, I agree. For cards that give +2 Cards (Steward) or +1 Card (Pawn), I'd think Cartographer could help you draw some Treasure and leave your Actions on top. Is that not really the case in practice? I could easily see most cantrips outshining these options, in any case.

Also, you might consider playing some Dominion on Goko. It's pretty smooth these days and it's nice to be able to play with the Dark Ages cards.

"UWguild ($4)
UYguild ($4)"

Pretty sure one of those is Journeyman....

How do you figure?

I think Navigator is fun, and I open with it a decent amount of the time.

I enjoy winning with Scout, Counting House, Mine, Rebuild, and many others. I want to like Mandarin, but I still don't understand it properly. Count seems to eclipse it so thoroughly.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Common strategic misconceptions

"Buy duchies when provinces are low."

Usually correct if both you and your opponent are playing for provinces, but often oh-so-wrong if your opponent is aiming for a slow alt-VP strategy (mainly thinking of VP chips here). If your opponent is aiming for a VP explosion, you need to end the game ASAP before it happens, because a handful of points from Duchies won't save you. That means avoiding all green except provinces and draining that pile as fast as you can.

It could also mean stealing some of the alt-VP and hastening the 3-pile ending, assuming you have enough Provinces to maintain a lead.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Card Idea: Jubilee
« on: December 17, 2012, 03:31:03 pm »
Instead of saying "when you trash this" you could just say "...you may trash this card.  If you do..."

He wants it to work with other cards that trash cards, and not just from the reaction ability.

Well, it's not that I'm stuck on that concept. It may not be doable. As I said above, I'd be happy to change it to "...you may trash this card.  If you do...". It would be cool if the card did something on-gain, or on-trash, etc. It doesn't have to be the same thing as when you reveal/trash it.

EDIT: Also, I was factoring in time for them fixing how on-buy and on-gain effects work. If they don't fix and test that, I could easily see all of Hinterlands being out in January.
In the private version, when I buy Mint with Royal Seal in play, it trashes my treasures and I don't get to use Royal Seal. When I buy a VP card with Hoard in play, I gain the Gold, can Royal Seal it, and then gain the VP card (and can Royal Seal it).
Nice! That's very good news.

Hinterlands isn't out yet. Ask again in late February.
I've playtested the first half of Hinterlands (not the half with Tunnel).
Well, I wasn't trying to be snide. Late February just seems like a realistic guess, what with the holidays, etc.

EDIT: Also, I was factoring in time for them fixing how on-buy and on-gain effects work. If they don't fix and test that, I could easily see all of Hinterlands being out in January.
