Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Traitor (Action-Attack)
« on: January 04, 2013, 03:30:17 pm »
I like the first one better because gaining a card should always come from the supply,

Thief, Noble Brigand, Rogue, Graverobber, Hermit, Pillage, Tournament, Black Market?

I agree no card currently has someone gain a card from "In Play", but I wouldn't rule it out.

Agreed.

As an alternative though, the card could be passed to the player on the left, giving them the option of playing it on their turn.

6427
Also, unless you specifically want this card to have a Harry Potter theme, call it Brownie, rather than House Elf. (Brownies are the folkloric creature that House Elves are based on.)
That's only if he wants this card to have a Scottish/English folklore theme, though.

Yeah, my bad. It should be named "Small Humanoid Fey Creature That Helps With Household Chores".  ::)

I think the card might be better if each other player gained a Curse instead of just the player to your left, but I bet it's OK as is.

The problem with cards like this is that they're useless on boards without +buys. Like, not Thief useless, but like literally "will never do anything for you that Copper couldn't do better" useless.

Agreed. I don't think a card with -1 Buy is doable.

6430
I think House Elf could be fixed by making it decrease your handsize for every card you chose not to draw.

The player to your left gains a curse (from the supply) and this card.

Worth 3$

Interesting idea. I think it'll have to produce resources in order to be viable, though. For example:

Traitor
Types: Action – Attack
Cost: $3
+$2. The player to your left gains this card and a Curse.

You know, I hate to be a downer, but I'm really sick of this thread being in this subforum. I see that there are new posts in the Variants forum and I think, "Oh, maybe there are new cards to critique, or someone has given me feedback on my cards." And then it's just another post or two to this thread. I wish there were a way I could unsubscribe to just this one thread.

I like humor as much as the next guy, but I wish this were moved to the general Dominion discussion area, where the other joke threads are.

6433
I'd rate Beggar higher, but maybe that's just because I love alt-VP and Counting House.

Quote
Beggar also helps you to get to $5 and then Counting House might be a decent option to buy especially in slogs.

There's no "might" about it. Beggar/Counting House is a sick combo, especially in Colony games.

I agree with this, except I would keep most of "Does well with" and that which follows.

Right. That stuff's always nice to have.

Also, wero, if you want to play some more Rebuild games, with or without Saboteur, let me know. I'm still not convinced that Saboteur is a great counter even in the hands of a skilled player, although I would like it if it were.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Catacombs - as bad as Explorer?
« on: January 02, 2013, 03:42:21 pm »
Catacombs is one of my favorite DA cards, it's very good. The ability to sift through 6 cards at once is (I believe) unmatched.

Storeroom.

EDIT: Actually, nevermind. Storeroom usually only gets you through 4 cards. It's only 8 cards when what you care about is discarding Tunnels.

How are you defining this?

If you pitch the hand, Catacombs pulls off 6 cards from the top of the deck.

From a hand of 5, Storeroom only draws 4 cards, never 8.  Even if you choose to discard everything twice, the second discard isn't drawing anything new.  At most, you pull off 4 cards from the top of the deck.

Of course, it gets better if you can increase hand size (same as Cellar).

Yes, you are absolutely correct. My brain incorrectly told me that Storeroom cycled through 8 cards, when what it really does is discard 8 cards, which mostly matters for Tunnel. This is all assuming hand of 5 cards, of course.

Dude, you've bloated the article even more. Edit it down!

What would you snip?

"Now let's discuss specific interactions" and everything after that.

EDIT: I am not kidding or exaggerating, by the way. I know you spent a lot of time writing all those interactions, but the article does not need them. Save a couple of choice ones for separate combo articles or something. As it is, this article seems way too long.

Might be too strong when gained from the Black Market. Probably more so than getting the only Curser from Black Market, since Cursers are strongest earlier in the game.

I am of the strong opinion that that interaction is not worth changing the card for. If anything, there could be a line in the FAQ instructing you not to put it in the Black Market deck. I'm usually against rules like that, but I think it might be warranted here.

6440
Though that could make the Bureaucrat stronger if it did affect Curses as well.

I kind of wish it did.

Eh, Bureaucrat's pretty strong already in any sort of slog.

Rules Questions / Re: Another Procession/Duration question
« on: January 02, 2013, 09:45:34 am »
I play Procession, then on the procession play a second procession. Then I play let's say two Caravans. What stays in play until the next turn? Nothing, or the first Procession? Obviously, I'll be drawing a card four times at the start of the next turn regardless.

From my understanding of the rules, the only cards that stay in play are durations themselves, and the cards that modify them directly, i.e. not the first Procession. But then I know the reason modifying cards stay out is to show you that they're doing something and to remind you. I would guess that the hard rules trump this, but, I'm not 100% certain right now.
Nothing stays out, via the hard rules. For a brief time I ruled that Thrones that Throned Thrones that Throned duration cards stayed out, but I abandoned that in favor of following the rulebook as closely as possible.

Wait, why wouldn't the second Procession stay out? It was used to play/modify a Duration card, so wouldn't it stay out the same as a Throne Room?

Because the first Procession trashes it?

I also wouldn't say that it's my desired result.  The Black Market interaction in particular is not desired.   But the FAQ is a place to clarify wonky rules, and not to put in exceptions.

I wish I could give you more +1s for this sentiment.

Is your desired Counterfeit interaction consistent with Counterfeit/Spoils?

Are you asking if Spoils is returned to the Spoils pile when played by Counterfeit, rather than being trashed? If so, the answer is yes. It is not trashed.

As far as trash-for-benefit goes, Catacombs makes a fantastic Develop target. Other than that, the on-trash ability is most useful as a defense against trashing attacks, as Qvist mentioned.

It's much more similar to masquerade than smithy. Actually, it's really, really similar to masq.

That is definitely true.

Except it's trodding directly on Smithy's territory.

Not at all. Smithy's primary function is to increase your handsize. Under most circumstances, Dungeon maintains your handsize.

If the "no-one possibly needs a placeholder card for Copper" technology had been around earlier, there would be 1-2 more cards, and Dark Ages might have had a few more or less depending on what happened with the cards that eat up the extra space.

Man, I really wish future copies of the base set had Dungeon and future copies of Intrigue had another new card to take up that space. Then maybe the BGG store could sell them as promos for those of us who already own those sets.

What was Dungeon?

Dungeon
Types: Action
Cost: $4
Trash a card from your hand. Discard a card. +3 Cards.

It's not that Dominion as a whole really needs Dungeon, but the base set really does. There's a big Dungeon-shaped hole in it. Without Dungeon, the only viable way to fight Witch is with Chapel. Remodel is a terrible Curse trasher. Moneylender and Mine can't trash Curses. I think new players might hate Witch less if Dungeon were available.

"Well, I gotta crap. Hopefully we can continue this later."

Doesn't sound that bad to me.

Ha, nice. It was a six-letter word, though.

At first I thought it was censored because of its connection to bodily processes, but after consulting Urban Dictionary, I discovered it can also be used as a term for a certain ethnic demographic. I feel a bit like Randal in Clerks II, although I'm guessing my usage of the term is still perfectly acceptable in mixed company.

EDIT: Ah, I might as well give it away before people start guessing off-color things. The censored word was 'boogie'.
