I also can't figure out how to directly post an image. Can anyone help with that?
1. On ShardsOfHonor download the image.
2. You may need to find a place to host your image like Imgur.com. For Imgur.com, after you upload your image, click on it and copy the Direct Link (2nd option) as your URL.
3. When making your messge, under the Italic option should give you the "Insert Image" option. Add " width=250" (yes, including that space) after "img" in the first bracket. Put your URL between the two bracket sets.

:)
This is not super obvious and took me a few tries to get. You can also select "Quote" at the top right of a message with an image to see how others have formatted the pictures in their message.
for Horizontal, "img height=250" or "img width=385"is best
for cards, "img width=250" or "img height=385" is best
Best of luck.

Marginally more interesting. +1 Card to gamble for Treasure, basically, haha. Does it suck enough it could cost $2?

Now and at the start of your next turn, choose one:
+1 Card, +1 Action; or +1 Buy, +$1.
I liked this one most. Town options nerfed, but choosing the cantrip to start your next turn makes it act like a village.
How much would it cost unnerfed? The double Woodcutter made me worried it would have to be maybe $6? or more?

To me Telescope seams too strong for $2 so here are two options to make it not such a weak $3.

So of the half dozen options i had this seamed worth trying this time. This would Exile your Coppers from play and Exile other Treasures to earn VP. Several birds grab interesting things to build a nest. Alas, good artwork is often difficult to find.

Instead of "turn one of your Potion tokens over to full" i'd just use "+Potion" since your not using the mechanic anyway.

On the Elixir token, i'd use a clear bottle to help distinguish between the half-full bottle, although i'd find a full bottle image.

On Elixir of Cleaning, i'd remove the ", for +$2" to better align with the others.

Concoction may be my favorite card of the set, with Investigator a close second.

Observatory is not worth $5, maybe $3.

Physician is underpriced at $2 - it is worth $3 at least.

Please playtest these and get back to us with any updates.

Well, would you look at that. Yet another Alchemy fan expansion thingy -- this one's different, though, I promise! Let me begin by telling you what approach I chose and why. You can also skip straight to "ALCHEMISTS & ELIXIRS" if you just want to see the actual cards & rules.

ALCHEMISTS & ELIXIRS

Oh, btw the Elixir tokens. I did the best I could do with AI art; it could be better. But I think it gets the point across. If anyone can do better than this, I'd be more than happy to use their result instead!

DEBT CARDS

Vineyard is the perfect Potion card. Herb Garden tries to emulate it; you can gain it without spending any $ the turn you get it, but if you want multiples at once, it demands some restraint on playing Action cards.

School costs debt in order to not ever be able to gain itself, and the buy restriction ensures that it's not an automatic first buy.

Alkahest might seem underwhelming at first glance, but man it isn't. It lets you play that Gold before upgrading it to Province, that's nuts. So nuts that this needs testing, I hope it doesn't prove to be as monolithic as Rebuild.

Concoction is a fun mix between Conspirator, Grand Market and Village. It might seem like a tracking nightmare IRL, but I promise it isn't! You only need to track the first 3 plays at the utmost anyway. In the worst case, bump it up if you chose the $, bump it down if you chose +buy, bump it even more up if you chose both, and put it sideways if you chose +Action.

Hospital is inspired by one of Asper's cards, Institute, which has Laboratory as a top and also costs 8 debt. This one has a top that interacts with the bottom, and it's probably a good BM card, but a tricky late game buy in engines.

Illusionist is my attempt at the +2 Cards, +$2 vanilla card that never came to be, because it could neither be a $4 nor a $5. This guarantees $5 in the early game and can spike really high, but becomes less relevant later on.

THE OTHER 2ND EDITION CARDS

Apprentice stays! With the removal of the whole Potion mechanic, I think you could let this count as an errata, so it requires no new name and art. It's also the coolest card from the original expansion IMO. He burned it all down and is the sole survivor. "Add a debt clause instead!", I hear someone yelling. Well, how about no?

As with School, Dispensary's gain restriction simulates the Potion delay effect, because you sure would love to open with it in most games. Since you don't have to add Potion as a stop card anymore, it got its range reduced to 3 cards revealed.

Observatory is a nerfed Scrying Pool in its purest form, but it's still explosive. It's also a candidate for costing Debt, but it just feels right at $5.

Occultist is just Golem 1:1. Is it really a $5? I think so, even if it's among the weaker ones. In some games you won't get to draw your whole deck.

Plagiarist is the super Smugglers. It's still annoying and potentially stale-mate-y, but as far as a Possession replacement goes, it's the best I could do.

Perfumer is simply a Scheme variant, in order to push the Action theme a little more. It's good with e.g. Philosopher!

Spellbinder fixes Familiar's swinginess in every way, 1) with its cost and 2) by junking in half-speed. And after it's done junking, it stays relevant as a Peddler.

Alchemist is another Potion card that I really like, because it has another use for the Potion beside letting it pay for its cost. Royal Laboratory is quite different, you just don't mind a Gold as much as a Potion in your deck, but it's more expensive. It's the fancy Lab now.

MORE NEW CARDS

Alehouse is a powerful Village variant, it really is the anti-Village-idiot-Village. A bit strong for $3, perhaps, but sometimes you might prefer classic Village's reliability.

Basilisk combines Militia with Clerk, and it bites its owner a little too. It's here to have 3 attacks in the set.

Brewery is a funny one, opening with it won't do you no good, but it likes terminal draw and Duration cards. It offers a choice between Peddler and cantrip trashing to make you want it, and echoes the chaining theme of the original set. Isn't it slow IRL, though? Well, just take 2 fingers, tap the pairs of cards in play until you have either 0 or 1 left.

to made the images easier to view, remember that:
for Horizontal, "img height=250" or "img width=385"is best
for cards, "img width=250" or "img height=385" is best

Variants and Fan Cards / Fan Card Mechanics Week 84: Multi-part mat

Fan Card Mechanics Week 84: Multi-part mat
:)
Howdy All,

This week's mechanic is a multi-part mat. Your objective is to design a mat that has two or three parts. My thought was the winner would use that mat for the next contest where we would design a card that would work well with this week's winning mat. An example could be something like:

"Nuts: Directly after playing an Action card, you may remove a token from here for +1 Action and +1 Buy. At the start of your turn if you have three tokens here, you may move one token to Banana.
Banana: After trashing a card, you may remove a token here for +1 Card."

:)

My main judging criteria is whether I would be excited to see the design in a Kingdom. Important factors:
* balance: is the mat useful, but not overpowered (both in general and in a variety of Kingdoms)
* playability: the mat is fun to play and works with more than one type of deck
* simplicity: this doesn't always mean fewer words; a mat with lots of text that, once you understand it, can be easily and intuitively be played is better than one with four lines of text that is difficult to understand
* topicality: designs something within the specifications presented

:)
Since entries seam to be in short supply as of late, I'll run the contest for a minimum of a seven days, but long enough to garner four entries. Then i'll provide a deadline notice.
:)
Have fun! I look forward to seeing your entries.
:)
So i have been giving the winner of the last contest some time to get another contest together, but it has been several weeks now.
:)

Quote from: BryGuy
Both of these ring very true to my lived experience. Since about half of US voters in any given election have no reasonable choices they just don't bother voting, while others vote for the least bad option.

If this were true, I would expect turnout to be much higher in primaries than in the general election, which is the opposite of what we see, and for it to be higher if the candidates in the general are reasonable, which I think is also the opposite of what we see. If the problem is that both Trump and Biden are bad choices, then -- from the PoV of a republican -- you should vote for Haley! The primary is on-going, this would be exactly the time where we should see high turnout. Haley seems to me like everything this hypothetical reasonable Republican who is just held down by the system would want.

The story is more plausible on the Democratic side, but then again, 4 years ago we had a primary there, and they chose Biden... while one of the people running against him was imo the most sane and rational person I've ever seen in politics by a mile. (People will disagree with me, but do you really think there was no good option there?) The "least bad option" thing just doesn't resonate if they chose the bad option before that, and if turnout while choosing that option was lower than when only the bad options were left.
:)
Why would you expect turn-out to be higher? Party primary are inside battles, that draw the few people who actually care. What kind of logic are you using to conclude more people care about primaries? I think Dominion is a great game, but i don't see this site flooded.

Why do you think Trump supporters are rational players? What would lead you to that odd conclusion? Sure Haley is the better choice and would provide, in theory, more of a challenge to Biden if the Republican party was largely comprised of rational players.

We know Trump and Biden are bad choices. Look at the opinion polls. US voters want more choices, but more choices are mitigated by plurality voting. In plurality voting, a system where you can't express but one opinion so you can not show favor to several potential alternatives, you must instead vote against all other options. So the US continues to only have two big-tent parties that house multiple factions. This leads to half of the US population with no meaningful representation at any level or branch of government.

Biden came about because of systemic problems with the Democratic primary and primaries in general. If as a policy the US only publicly funds the primaries of the two largest parties then there is the appearance that there are no other viable options, despite most ballots showing about a dozen options for US President each year. Also the primaries do not all occur on the same day, but are spread out. While this might have been fine before the advent of the the telegram with today's communication ability this allows a monied interest to divide and conquer the early states to steer the trajectory in their favor.

Not that many people in the US are actually happy to be voting for Trump, they do it because they don't feel like they have better options, which is not that hard to happen when they only have one other option and most of the other option's voters also agree that they aren't happy to be voting for him, they just do it because they don't feel like they have better options. The fact that most Americans are in agreement that there aren't really any good options to vote for shows 1) that the average American does actually have reasonable takes on politics 2) that the American democracy is fundamentally extremely imperfect.

It's all connected in my mind, the lack of democracy and the support for the far-right.

The far-right benefits because it can put itself in a perceived opposition to a system that does not serve the interests of the average citizen. The system does not serve their interests because people in critical positions are reliant on the support of corporations. Corporate power stems from the undemocratic control that wealthy people have over the economy. If corporations were worker-controlled, we could significantly remove their influence over politics, and when they do lobby, it would be on behalf of the workers rather than their rich shareholders.

At the same time, a corporatized media landscape pushes the interests of the media owners, which align more with the far-right than the left. Here again worker democracy in journalism would allow them to set an agenda that is more closely aligned with the interests of the people.

The problems in the US and in Germany are systemic.

:)
Both of these ring very true to my lived experience. Since about half of US voters in any given election have no reasonable choices they just don't bother voting, while others vote for the least bad option. Gerrymandering and other systemic issues like plurality voting are barriers to the public having reasonable representation.

You could just pick a parliament out of citizens via RNG. If anyone doesn't want to do it or doesn't show up, they can get replaced by a different random person. This would probably be better than representative democracy.
learned two things today:
1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sortition  I find this interesting since less than half of the United States population has meaningful representation at any level or branch of government.
2. RNG = random number generation and not Renewable Natural Gas

Marksman is a nonterminal trasher that lets you choose between cantrip now, trash later or vice versa (which gives you some Duration draw later). It triggers on having 4 Actions in play, so it will usually sit there a few turns early game, but eventually you can trigger several at once or even get both effects on the same turn (like a cheaper Junk Dealer) if you play in the right order. To track which effect you've done already, I recommend playing the card upside down if you need to trash next time. The trash is mandatory, so be careful when you trigger this--playing a line of Marksmen as cantrips might come back to bite you later. The "during your Action phase" wording is to prevent triggering during Clean-up (any simpler wording ideas are welcome!).

This is for Allies, an expansion that emphasizes choose ones (especially cantrip or *effect*) and recursion--this is a Duration card that might not be a Duration after all.
What if I play it with an Elder?
You play Elder. You play Marksman from your Hand as instructed. You get both options on Markman. At Clean-up Markman has completed its actions and is discarded.

Playing a Marksman with Elder is not different that playing a Barge, Gondola, or Village Green and choosing now - at Clean-up of the first turn it is discarded since it has completed its actions.

Duration Official Rules

minor card typo, it should read "... The next time you have ..."
