Dominion Isotropic / Re: delaying games on purpose, how to handle?

Looking at the game log, unless you discarded a Potion, turn 15 couldn't have ended on piles. However, you could have ended on turn 16 on piles. But, yah, I could see someone looking at the colonies and forgetting about the last Alchemist. It happens sometimes.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Promo sales limitations!?

That's a good idea. Except... I can't really claim to be promoting the game. The tournament assumes you're already familiar with the game (it needs to, otherwise you have to allow slow play, which means you can't schedule games easily, and then people can get frustrated and too few games may be played to determine a winner). Still, I can give it a shot.

Actually, you are promoting the game. I know Dominion is not a  CCG, but for Magic, Pokemon, and WoW, they have tournaments where they give out promo cards as prizes that are provided by those game publishers. Why do they do this? To keep people coming back and buying their product. Even though you might not be recruiting new players, you are bringing players who have an interest in Dominion to your store. Perhaps, some of them don't own every set. And, maybe, having a tournament there will make them interested in buying an expansion or two. You might also get an observer who watches the game and ends up buying Base or Intrigue that night. So, in my opinion, by hosting a tournament, you very much are promoting the game.

If we saw the game log, we would also have a better idea as to whether or not the OP had plenty of opportunities to end the game. Anyway, if what the OP says is true, then, yes, the opponent was being a jerk.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: News on forthcoming expansions

I like the name Dark Ages. It would have been a fitting name for the final expansion since Dominion would go literally go into Dark Ages with no new expansions coming out in the foreseeable future. And, 500 cards! Wow that is huge. It sounds like you wanted to make the last expansion something special. It kind of sucks RGG is changing the release schedule, but I am super excited for this years expansion. Also, VP cards and money with pictures sounds nice. Will Colonies and Platinums be included with this?

Maybe, you can email Rio Grande and tell them that you want to run a tournament. Maybe, they can help you since you are promoting their game.

Tunnel is "bad" for the same reason that Cache is bad. You can use it to get gold but you're still diluting your deck with other cards. If you use a tunnel for gold only once, you've increased your $/card by less than buying a silver would have. If you use it twice, it's equal to buying a silver. Tunnels don't even increase your buying power right away, you'll have to go through a reshuffle after activating it before the gold will appear in your deck.

That being said, I don't think tunnels are really bad just overrated currently. If you can discard and cycle your deck to activate tunnels, you're well suited to having a deck with high variance and the 2VP from tunnels shouldn't be overlooked. However, on some boards tunnels + discard is too slow compared to alternate strategies and I see people going for them even when they should be ignored.

Certain cheap cards like Warehose, Oasis, Secret Chamber enable Tunnel to trigger very early in the game and multiple times. By the time you would normally reach $6, you may have already gained 3 or 4 golds off of a Tunnel. With more costly discard such as Inn then, yes, normally, you won't get the gold as quick, but you will still have many triggers, anyway. At least, usually. It really depends on what you open Tunnel with. Usually, though, the discard is good enough that it is worth going for a tunnel or two or three.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Ill-Gotten Gains - bad for the game?

I find IGG to be the most boring straightforward curse giver in the game. I have a pretty decent win rate with it as well. It is worse than Tournament which actually requires some level of play skill. All you need to do for IGG is hit $5 every turn and when you don't, oh well just buy a silver. There is very little an opponent can do against the deck and for the most part leaves very little strategy. Many cards are simply unplayable in a IGG board. It is also more boring than Witch and Mountebank because I feel with those two cards on the board you are allowed more strategy depending on the card selection.

I think having a 30sec clock after each reaction is played makes sense. This also will help with when people forget +buys. So, no 60 seconds per turn, but then 30 second per reaction/buy. Then, if you don't make a decision your turn skips. This clock should probably be visible though.

Dominion General Discussion / Dominion Card Sleeves
« on: December 31, 2011, 08:18:00 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking to purchase card sleeves for Dominion. I'm looking for actual sleeves that fit the cards this size, and not Magic sleeves. I'm also not looking for crappy penny sleeves.

Anyway, do you any of you know what's out there and what your recommendations are? Thanks.

There are spots for the tokens and mats, plus extra storage as well.

-  More ways to give curses

Every expansion to date has this

-  More ways to remove curses (important for balance)

i.e. More trashing. Every expansion to date has this

-  Ways to punish people that have curses in their deck/hand

Many people already hate the Cursing attacks because of how damaging there are. You really want to make them MORE painful?

-  A new type of curse (hex?) that is more powerful, but also more difficult to give out and less spammable.

Again, -1VP and deck/hand clogging is already damaging enough.

-  Ways to utilise curses n your deck to some end (as stated above, difficult to balance, it would have to be more about mitigating the negative consequences than giving 'bonuses' as such).

This is just trash/discard-for-benefit and it already exists in many forms.

An expansion like this would bring nothing new to the game apart from putting many people off because of the increased aggression.

Kind of like Alchemy and Possesion, or just Alchemy in general. Btw, I love Alchemy, but I think Donald X. tried too hard to make the cards in that set good. Not that Possession is too good, but other cards like Apprentice, Familiar, Golem, etc. can be quite powerful. Especially, Apprentice.

Maybe, we will get Treasure/Curse cards or Treasure/Victory Cards. For example, Cursed Gold -- Cost: $4 -2VP $3. I know this isn't supposed to have a custom card creation. But, maybe, the theme can be curses matter. Maybe, a horror theme. Maybe, there is a card that gives you bonuses for having curses.

On BGG, they have a single photo of Big Box 2 which seems to have a German release. http://boardgamegeek.com/image/1102688/fireangel

I'd like to see pairs of Kingdom cards that are always in the Supply together. I think a lot of interesting design space could be opened by allowing a Kingdom card to reference another specific Kingdom card. It might work better for a full-sized set, though. 13 pairs of cards is a lot more variety than 6 pairs of cards.

I could see a village effect being such a kingdom card.

Dominion General Discussion / Dominion Big Box and Big Box 2

Hi,

I just got the big box for Christmas, and I am very happy with it. I just have one question, will a big box 2 get a US release? I noticed there was a big box 2 that was released in Germany, but I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a US issue. Sorry if this question has been asked before.
