Dominion General Discussion / Re: Doctor overpay
« on: August 27, 2013, 07:08:22 pm »
I find opening Doctor is best. $4 seems okay, but $5 or especially $6 is ideal. If you track your deck well, you can trash most of it very quickly. I did a late Doctor overpay once. I found it worked okay because I had an idea of my deck contents, but I am not sold on Doctor as a late game trasher.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko: End of Summer Sale
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:33:00 am »
Quote
Goko friends!  We're celebrating a great Summer and the beginning of an even better Fall. We're giving an extra Dominion Expansion (for free!) to anyone that orders $20 or more of Dominion Expansions in the next 48 hours. If buying $20 of expansions means you've got them all, then we'll give you Promo Cards, Adventure Finales, or Zaps instead!

Does anyone else think this might be some sort of "end of the quarter" scramble to up their numbers in terms of paying customers, perhaps as part of calculating a valuation for another round of VC funding?  To me, it doesn't seem like a promotion that was well thought out (then again, it is Goko), so it seems more like a desperate attempt to put up some big numbers.   Overall, I think such a sale is likely a bad sign for the overall health and viability of Goko as a company.  Of course, I may be reading too much into it...

To be honest, their sale proposal sucks and they should offer a steeper discount like 30% off or something. Anyway, I wouldn't be anymore worried than I was before. Other places have sales as well. Goko Dominion is year-old now, so having a sale at some point was inevitable.

What I would like to see is everyone submit the one card they consider the most powerful and then to make a list of whatever the top 10 results came in to be and then vote on those to see what we consider the best card.

It would be really nice if you could buy Goko expansions with coins, not just Gokoins....

Then, they wouldn't make money.

Goko Dominion Online / Extension Suggestion
« on: August 24, 2013, 10:45:32 pm »
With GokoDom II going on, I have become annoyed at how often I have to reset player order. I was wondering if anything could be done to try and remember who won the previous game when facing off against the same opponent more than one time in a row. Maybe it can even work out like iso if you won your last game and you play against someone that lost their previous game they would go first and you would go second. Is there anyway to make this work, AI or michaeljb?

So, if someone buys all the expansions, how many promos will be credited to your account? I really don't care since I have all 5 promos, but I would rather other players not go through the grind that I did to get them.

I am pretty sure that the agreement Goko has with RGG and Donald X. forbids any custom-made cards from being put on their servers.

Who really cares about the trueskill from bots.??
I only looked at them for the reason that they might reveal something about the Goko rating system (and possibly about Trueskill in the context of Dominion as well, even though the underlying mechanisms are known), out of academic interest as someone who has (very briefly) worked with designing such rating systems.

Potential under/overestimation of bot skill in Goko is also relevant from a meta game design perspective. While hardcore Dominion players might not care about the internal ranking in Goko, the leaderboard is an integral part of the product Goko is offering and non-negligible part of their customers play against bots frequently enough to be affected by such potential bias in their quest of playing the meta game of leaderboard climbing.

Edit: Also, if the bots would, for some reason, have biased estimates in Trueskill, playing against them could be used to game the system. You probably couldn't reach the very top that way, since they have so low skill, but maybe the average players could  get a few extra levels that could matter for a contest amongst a group of friends?

I am sure in casual you could reach the top by playing the bots by pre-selecting an engine kingdom they have no chance of winning

Vineyard is strong. And, really, the cards don't need to mesh too well. You just need a lot of actions in your deck. The key card really is University and Council Room is gravy on top. With University, you just gain tons of actions. I suppose you can get Golems as well, but not really necessary. You get around 4 or so Potions and then use the +Buys of Council Room to buy up Vineyards and load up on more actions. Without a doubt, that is a Vineyard board. The good thing about Vineyard is that they will be worth more than a Province.

Also, if you had 3 Provinces, you probably built up your economy somewhat. Those Buys could have probably been better spent either buying Potions or actions. The fact that you only had 3 Vineyards is telling.

I had an auto-Automatch game where it wanted to pair me with someone that had 6 sets and make them the host while I own all sets.

Chapel is probably the wrong call here because there isn't much room for an engine. Thief has some use though because Duke seems to be favored here. Eventually, someone could get the City stack to work, but at the other expense of the other player winning the Duchy split. Really, Duke is the only thing that sticks out to me here.

I honestly don't think Amb. holds up as much these days. It is still strong, but DA really changes the strength of that card.

Yes, go in User Settings and there is a text field where you can add people to the blacklist.

Thanks.
This solves a lot of the problem that wasn't solved on iso.
If a play against someone who swears or is rude or slow-rolls or anything obnoxious, at least I know it won't happen again.

Appreciate it,

Ed

Edge Case: You are paired up against him in a tournament.

Edge case to the edge case: It is not a him, but actually a she.

2742
This used to happen a lot to me many months ago before iso shut down. What is happening is that you are still playing the game and you're opponent is waiting on you, but there is no way to  rejoin that game. Why that is, I have no idea.

Wow.
What a pain.

When it was obvious I was going to win he started to wait 4 minutes or so before playing his turn. Every turn.

There is a way to block people with the Extension, right? Not that Guest6628.0000 is likely to be around very long.
(He had a good rating too - I assume it was by slow-rolling a bunch of other people who just got tired of it and quit)

Ed

Some general advice, don't ever play against a guest.

The same site posted a followup article in which they interview the new Goko CEO.  Not a whole lot of  information there over the first article, but one tidbit is that an iOS version of Goko Dominion is supposed to ship next month.

Interesting read. They still have a lot of issues to solve and they really need to get rid of the dragging for Navigator and Watchtower if they want a good UI experience on a Tablet.

Also, I'm finding it hard to justify Witch over cultist. I remember reading that, in the simulator, Witch against Cultist wins a bit more often. Still, in most games the speed at which Cultist junks is more devastating, because it forces you to get your act together really quickly. And then if you don't retaliate with a junker of your own, powerful Cultist chains are very likely to go off.

The simulator was just Witch BM vs. Cultist BM. Obviously, if any engine is possible, Cultist will just wipe that potential away if your opponent goes for Witch instead.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Automatch Extension
« on: August 15, 2013, 01:55:35 pm »
OK, does anyone else experience long wait times between accepting an automatch and having the other player accept?  I'm wondering if it's people being away from their computers, or lag in the system.  Sometimes it seems to be instantaneous, other times I've started another game after 3 minutes of waiting on an accepted automatch.

Part of the reason, I think, that automatch doesn't have a critical mass is that the very people who would be early adopters of it also are most likely to find matches the normal way, i.e. through having all the cards and a middling or higher rating.

I've had the problem before. I think there needs to be a timeout for automatch, maybe a minute or so, then start looking for another opponent.

I just can't agree with Ambassador being 1. Ever since DA, it has become more and more ignorable. On boards with Rebuild, opening Ambassador is just helping the opponent. Shelters are out, Amb. is much weaker. You're facing against Ruins, you just can't return them as easily as curses. Masquerade on the other hand, still maintains the same power level, maybe even goes up due to all the engine stuff going on these days.

But, I would put Rebuild at 1. You can almost never ignore it, and the card is just crazy powerful. At one point, Ambassador was crazy powerful and still is on a lot of boards, but I am finding myself purchasing it less and less.

My user settings get reset to default between sessions. Specifically: the "always turn VP on" thing gets unchecked, the "always stack cards" thing gets unchecked, and the blacklist gets emptied.

There's a way to always turn vpon. I did not even realize that.

I'm surprised you have BV over Wandering Minstrel. I do like the gain effect, but the sifting of Minstrel is so powerful and it is only $4.

Indeed. Thank you all for your suggestions and for you candor. I haven't really thought seriously about the design of the Automatch UI, but it's clear that it's just not going to be a useful feature until it's really obvious and nearly automatic to use. Your ideas on how to make that happen are very useful.

SCSN and whoever else, please don't use Automatch out of a sense of obligation. The feature will stand on its own when I/we get it right, and one person just can't make that much difference in the mean time.

Finally, please don't think that I've been ignoring your feature requests. There's been a steep learning curve for me to get the hang of both collaborative work and of browser extensions. I've gotten a lot of help from michaeljb and I'm finally starting to feel competent with the extensions, rake, and git. So you'll get your beep and more soon. Promise. ;)

I don't feel like you have ignored our requests at all. I am really impressed with what you, nutki and michaeljb have all contributed. I don't know anything about programming, but it seems like you guys have put a lot of work into all of this. So, I am very, very grateful.
