Currently, this will be unsanctioned which means no prize support. This is more of a get together to try out new cards.

Currently, I plan on doing this 7pm Friday June 10th

The location will be where I run my autism program. I have enough room for up to 40 people.

Dominion General Discussion / Early Adventures Impressions
« on: May 04, 2016, 04:09:24 am »
Okay, technically, the expansion has been out for over a year now, but only since Monday have many people here had a chance to start playing with the cards. So, this thread is to discuss what your thoughts are on Adventures so far. What cards do you like? Are there cards you hate? How do you feel this expansion changes the game? Do you feel any cards are overrated or underrated right now? Any other thoughts?

Goko Dominion Online / Adventures Pricing
« on: March 14, 2016, 04:02:55 am »
Jeff has stated on the Making Forums that Adventures will cost as much as the other-large expansions. So, for those wanting to know how much they will have to budget, we now have an answer.

Umm, anyway, how many Ducats does this mean we will have to purchase? I have no idea what the other expansions cost?

Dominion General Discussion / Best Place to Preorder Empires
« on: March 01, 2016, 07:32:47 pm »
I was wondering what retailer has the best track record for getting preorders out closest to release date. I want to order my copy of Empires now so I don't have to worry about it later on.

Anyone have great success with preorders?

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Gear
« on: February 22, 2016, 09:45:38 pm »

Some points of discussion to start with. Other discussion points relating to the card are welcomed:

  • According to Geronimoo's Simulator, Triple Gear is the single best Big Money strategy, beating out Wharf and Jack
  • When do you use Gear in an engine vs. Big Money? Is Triple Gear faster than Rebuild.

My thoughts. This card is super fast. It's only weakness is against discard attacks. I think a lot of engines can have
trouble going off against Gear, the same way that most engines have trouble competing against Rebuild. I do think though in some engines, Gear can compliment it well. My biggest fear though is that when this is on the board, the majority of the time, the correct thing is to open triple Gear and play Big Money.

Goko Dominion Online / Should Dominion Online Have Identical Starting Hands
« on: November 26, 2015, 08:57:44 pm »
I am a huge advocate for identical starting hands. I feel that as it is Dominion already has a ton of variance as it is. There are few ways to control this, but identical starting hands is one option we have. I know there are people against it, but I don't feel I have heard a compelling argument as to why we should not have the option available for those who want it. The main argument it is that identical starting hands is a variant. Okay, that's true, but below I will list my reasons as to why we should have it as a option.

1. For Tournaments, it makes the tournament more balanced
2. Makes Pro Games more balanced (also alternating starts between who wins and loses would help)
3. With Adventures it is possible to get even swinger openings that just outright win than even before
Examples: Mint/Alms, Inheritance/, Goons/ (hey, I've done this before with Baker, not nice at all), Doctor Overpay of 5 or greater (7 would just be insane), etc. And, that's not counting openings that already are unfair like Mint/FG, Mountebank/Chapel or even Mountebank in general.
4. Eliminate swingy openings as mentioned above
5. Reduces luck

Now, I know some people really like the luck-base of Dominion, but it really sucks when you play against someone who plays sub-optimally and just kicks your ass because they got a God opening and there is nothing you can do to make a comeback.

So, anyway, please vote and explain your reasoning for your vote. If this poll is positive towards identical starting hands, I will pass it on to MF. If not and if I'm in a minority, I will just let it die.

Goko Dominion Online / Helping MF Make Dominion Online a Success
« on: November 10, 2015, 06:19:29 pm »
So, I have been thinking about this a little. I know overall a lot of us aren't happy with Dominion Online right now. I know I'm not. Right now, it apparently erases all data to whatever folder it is downloaded to. It crashes and overheats for a lot of people. Adventures hasn't been implemented. It's still not on Steam, the web version is unplayable at least for me, the iPad version is not out (plus no offline, what's up with that?) Also, it is damn hard to see what is in play, especially when it matters like with Scheme. Plus, there are other issues as well that have never been fixed like first turn order after winning/losing a game after playing the same opponent again. So, I'm not saying they are the most competent developers around, but please here me out.

Overall, I feel MF wants Dominion to be a success. They aren't Goko. Goko was probably made just to make someone rich and had no intention of serving the fan at all or making a successful Dominion product. MF has other games under their belt. They may have paid money to get the rights from Goko, or maybe RGG was nice and let them have the rights since they already put work into it. Either way, they were spending thousands each month keeping the older servers up. They are paying people's salaries to work on this game. So, they are spending something on this project, which means it is an investment to them and they want it to succeed just as much as we do.

Now, I know progress has been slow. We saw little progress until recently. Actually, I would argue the bulk of the progress we have seen happened after Goko got shut down, probably because they realized they needed to show results, or who knows what. Anyway, I want to know what we can do to help them.

Overall, I feel the forum went in a negative direction after Goko was shut down and for understandable reasons which unfortunately led to a feud between two respected posters on here. No names mentioned. We all know what happened. Anyway, after the backlash of Goko being shut down, it seems MF has pretty much ignored us. Now, I know they listen if we contact them directly. But, I want to help change the perception they may have of the community at the moment.

So, here is my proposal, we try to work with MF, and I don't mean just tell them what we don't like about the product. I think they have some idea of what changes need to be made. What I am thinking is asking them if it would be okay to set up a donation page. Honestly, I paid Goko 3 years ago for a product, not MF, and I got thousands of games worth of my $45 investment. I have no problem giving MF more money if I actually think it will be put to good use. I know some of you may be against my donation idea, and that's okay.

My second idea is to maybe see if they are willing to work on the development with any of us that are really program savvy. SCSNs mod has helped a lot. If SCSN or anyone else is willing to donate time to the project so we get the best game possible, I think that would be great. Now, maybe SCSN or some of you are against the idea of working with MF. Or, maybe MF is against the idea as a whole. I'm just brainstorming ways we can help out and help restore the image of this community.

I love Dominion just like all of you. I want the online experience to be successful. I want MF to succeed. I want it to have all the features we would like and also all the features a mainstream crowd would like. I want it to reach as many people as possible and maybe even bring new people to the game. I would love it if we got tons of new members because of how successful the online implementation became. Now, that may or may not never happen, but I want the best for everything and everyone. I want our community to thrive and for us to look back on this time period as a turbulent time that tested us, but ultimately led to our community becoming stronger than ever and Dominion being stronger than ever.

Any suggestions or ideas to help MF are welcome.

Goko Dominion Online / Time Out Timer for Online Dominion
« on: November 02, 2015, 08:28:22 am »
A big issue a lot of casual players are complaining about are slow players and the need for a kick out timer. Personally, I rarely encounter slow playing at higher ratings. It happens sometimes, but rarely.

Anyway, I have a feeling with all the complaints MF gets about this issue that this is something that they will do something about. My worry is that they may end up doing something where players don't have enough time to think things through and play properly.

For example, on their forum, the players were asking for the timer to allow games to only be 10 minutes and no more than that, feeling as this that is an acceptable amount of time. My guess is they only play with base, or they don't really think much while playing and just buy the first thing they see. Years ago, I was at that stage once, so I understand why they feel 10 minutes is enough. But, I know for those of us on the forums, there are plenty of games where we need more than 10 minutes to play.

So, anyway, what are your thoughts? How would you like to see MF implement this feature?

Goko Dominion Online / Overheating/Crashing Fix
« on: October 29, 2015, 09:00:29 am »
So, some of you may still be experiencing overheating and crashing issues. I had this same problem until I messaged MF. They told me to uninstall and reinstall the program, and that ended up taking care of the problem for me. My guess is that it should work for most everyone else as well. And, if it doesn't make sure you let MF know about it.

Goko Dominion Online / Playing Worse on the New Client
« on: October 27, 2015, 10:37:31 pm »
Maybe this is just me. However I feel that on the new client I don't play as well as I did on Goko. I do silly things sometimes. I sometimes feel as if I am bad as a bot. I think partially this is because I'm not used to the new system. Visually it looks a lot like Goko but feels very different to me for reason. I think another reason for my decline in playing skill is getting matched with many players who likely aren't even aware this forum exists. For example, my opponent opens p ship, so I start doing silly things as well.

Is this happening to anyone else or is this just me? Any advice to help me get back into the groove of things?

2015 / Goko May Shut Down This Month! What Will We Do?
« on: October 07, 2015, 06:14:36 pm »
Okay, so MF has stated that once Apple approves the Tablet version, they are shutting down Goko, and this may very likely happen this month.

There are two main problems with this.

The first problem is that all games are ranked and there is no way to determine player order. So, this means, to get the right 1st person pairing, people would have to concede ranked games.

The second main issue is that there is a memory leak problem with the current MF implementation, and they aren't sure what is causing it. For me, this causes my computer to crash after 3 games. On MF's forums other players are reporting their computers overheating.

So, my question is with these two main issues, what is the plan if Goko shuts down?

Goko Dominion Online / Dominion 2.0 Stacks Your Deck
« on: September 21, 2015, 06:03:13 am »
I have been playing a few games on the new client, and a lot of times it will seem like key cards are at the bottom of the deck, all scrunched up, like all my villages on the bottom after every reshuffle.

Anyway, I have been encountering a lot of games like this and finally had my suspicions confirmed when I played a game (against a bot) where I hit the opponents potion five times with Swindler and then hit Scavenger 7 more times in a row with Swindler. Statistically, I am pretty sure this is impossible.

Anyway, the shuffling problem does not seem to always occur, but it does exist and something funky is going on. I know this is absolutely not my imagination. The decks are not shuffling properly and cards are being stacked. I have played more than enough games to be 100% positive about this.

Dominion General Discussion / My Thoughts on Adventures after 30 or so Games
« on: September 15, 2015, 08:16:35 am »
So, I have had a chance to play more Adventures games. I have played roughly 30 games, maybe 40 games, so I am still very much a noob with the cards. But, I wanted to share some of my thoughts.

1) The more irl I play, the more I can't wait for this to be online. This expansion is AMAZING!

2) Donald X. really likes to create powerful cards that cost $2 to purchase. Champion is like holy crap when you play it. I think it is even more powerful than KC and that costs $7 to buy and you need multiples to really take full advantage of it. Chapel and Page are crazy power cards. Peasant is up there, as well. Why does $2 get the strongest cards in the game? Not complaining though.

3) Events are great. Some of the effects are weaker than others, but in most games, I often bought the available events at least once. My favorites are Mission and Pilgrimage. Lost Arts is a strong runner up. Oh, and Lost Arts is also crazy powerful. Experience has taught me it is worth skipping a Wharf buy for, or pretty much anything for that matter. When you hit $6, even with villages in your deck, buy this event.

4) I finally played a game where I bought Transmogrify. I thought the card would suck, so I kept avoiding it, but was pleasantly surprised. I still need a lot more experience with the card, but you can do interesting things with Transmogrify. Though, only being able to call it at the start of the turn is a bit of a small drawback.

5) Ferry plays a lot differently than I anticipated. It really changes the game. Sometimes, you are rushing for a good $5 or $6 cost, but a lot of times, you have to take a step back and ask if you would rather buy something else such as a source of +buy or trashing. The card reminds me a lot of Stonemason. It can lead to crazy pile endings. You can make $2's cost $0 and $3 cost $1 which is actually a pretty big deal. The card is surprisingly very strategic to use. Out of all the events, I think this may very well be the most strategic event in the game. Not what I was expecting.

6) Royal Carriage is so much better than TR. You can do some very interesting things with RC such as call 4 RCs on one Mountebank.

7) Here is a quick power ranking of what I consider the most powerful cards in the set starting with the most powerful. Page, Magpie, Peasant, Lost Arts, Haunted Woods, Ferry, Lost City, Ball, Swamp Hag, Pilgrimage, Royal Carriage

So, those are my thoughts. It will be interesting to look back on this a year later after I get 1000ish online games under my belt and see how my views change (or don't).

What are your thoughts on Adventures?

Dominion General Discussion / Dominion Attire & Merchandise
« on: August 24, 2015, 03:15:00 am »
Being the huge fan of Dominion that I am, I very much wish there was at least one official T-Shirt out there. I was thinking maybe something for the forums with the Chapel card from the meme thread that says Every Turn I'm Shufflin.

Anyway, I am mainly posing this question to Donald X. if he sees this. Has anyone asked you about merchandising rights? Do you think we may see some Dominion merchandise in the future? Would it be possible for fds to have an offical shirt to maybe support the site?

Just curious. If not, I will probably go and make my own unofficial Dominion shirt someday.

Dominion: Adventures Previews / Procession Hireling
« on: April 23, 2015, 08:14:47 am »
So, I'm pretty sure that if you Procession a Hireling, you get a $7 cost action if there is one and then the procession stays out and you draw 2 cards at the start of every turn.

Now, if I am to understand correctly, if you procession a procession that is processioning a hireling, am to guess that nothing stays out, the procession that is processing hireling is trashed, and that you still draw 2 cards at the start of your turn?

Dominion Videos and Streams / Best of Stream & YouTube compilation
« on: April 13, 2015, 11:04:14 pm »
So, I had this idea. I'm a pretty busy guy, and I am sure others on the forums are as well. I love watching streams and YT videos. The problem is I can not watch them all.

My suggestion is for people to link to videos where the games were either very exciting or instructional. Maybe you saw an amazing combo come together or something. This is the place to post these videos for people who have a busy schedule and can't watch everything or for those who maybe want to rewatch/relive said videos.

Variants and Fan Cards / Events
« on: April 13, 2015, 12:04:31 am »
Alright, now that we have seen some events, what are some cool ideas that you have come up with for this new mechanic

Here are a few of my ideas.

More Black Market Craziness
$8
Randomly select a random kingdom supply pile and add it to the Kingdom. You may gain the top card from this pile.

Board Control
$9
Move the supply token to any supply pile (empty or otherwise). If this supply has no cards in it, it is not considered an empty supply pile.

The above card could be good if you are behind and about to lose on piles. I don't know. Just seems like a kind of cool idea.

Points!
$6
Move your VP token onto any supply pile. (Your VP token makes cards in that supply pile worth +1VP)

I used to be a game demo person for Wizards of the Coast. You know, that company that makes Magic: The Gathering. I would go to stores and conventions and teach people how to play all the games they made. I was pretty good actually. I could teach people how to play games quick and get them interested. A lot of my demos turned into sales at conventions while I would see other game demo people struggling to explain the same games to them. Often, I was tasked with teaching the more obscure games because of how good I was at teaching games.

Anyway, what I learned is to keep it simple. Hold back and don't teach everything. This goes for Magic or any other game whether it be a board or card game.

So, for Dominion, the trick is to hold back mechanics. My recommendation is to hold back showing Moat and Witch at first. I would also recommend holding back Gardens since there are the regular VP cards already present. Yes, the first game has Moat in it. I recommend swapping it out.

For game 2, keep 5 cards from the previous game and introduce 5 new cards. Why? The 5 cards are familiar. This makes it quicker to learn the 5 new cards. Whereas is you go with 10 all new cards, it is almost like learning the game all over again. Also, this makes it easier for new players to memorize the 5 cards from the previous game. Essentially, this speeds up the learning curve and makes it both quicker and easier to learn the game.

For game 3, mix things up. If you have been doing engine games, go for a slog. If your first two games lend more big money, try to make it more of an engine thing. Also, game 3 would be a good time to introduce Witch and Moat or Gardens. Or even all 3.

Seaside is a fairly straightforward for the most part. I tend to introduce cards from Seaside and Intrigue at the same time. My recommendation though is not to introduce both the mat cards and durations at the same time. Introduce one new concept at a time.

A couple of months later and many games, introduce Prosperity. Just skip Alchemy for now. Why wait on Prosperity? Because by waiting to show off Colonies and expensive cards, there is more of a WOW factor and that's a good thing. I know you are dying to show off these cards, but be patient. Again, introduce just 5 new cards at a time.

After Prosperity, it is up to you where to go. I would save DA and Alchemy for much later. While Adventures seems very complex, I think the WOW factor of Events may make it worth it to teach it to them before DA. You might want to show off Guilds or Hinterlands first though. When teaching Adventures just remember to hold back. Introduce Events with the new Durations but hold off tokens and Reserve cards for another game. Next game show off the Reserve cards.

Anyway, good luck to you in teaching Dominion. I hope this brief guide proves valuable to those wanting to get people into Dominion or who aren't sure how to go about introducing new expansion to their play group.

44
Right now, as it is, we see Colonies pretty rarely. One thing that irks me is that we see Colonies less than Shelters. With Adventures coming out, Colony games will be pretty rare.

Also, I think the whole you must have a Prosperity card to play with Colonies is a bit silly. You can have a game with just Loan and have Colonies show up. One could argue that cost should be taken into consideration for how to randomize Colonies, but I do not feel that way.

Overall, I think Colonies and Shelters should show up as equally as each other and not be bound by DA and Prosperity cards. They are fun and add intriguing elements to the game.

What I am thinking is that after some debate we can link this thread to the Features Thread David from MF made.

Anyway, my proposal is that a d10 or d20 is rolled every game once for colonies and again shelters. What is everyone else's thoughts? Right now, as it is, I don't believe the system works, and well, the Colony and Shelter rules are suggestions in the rule book, if I recall correctly.

Goko Dominion Online / Dominion MF 1.0 Playtest version online now
« on: April 01, 2015, 05:11:08 am »
Has anyone else noticed this. If you go to Goko, there is an option in the lower corner to playtest the Unity version and give feedback. So far, it doesn't seem much better than Goko and a lot of Salavager features are missing.

Dominion World Masters / 2015 Tournaments?
« on: January 20, 2015, 04:38:24 pm »
Hey!

Does anyone know of any tournaments in 2015 that lead into the World Masters? I know in California there has been nothing like ever. If a convention wanted to run a Dominion tournament for World Masters who would they need to contact?

Goko Dominion Online / Being Restarted
« on: November 13, 2014, 06:26:33 pm »
Twice today I had games restart on me where I was sent back to the main screen. This was done without that popup warning window coming on that asks if I am sure I want to leave the page. I have never had this happen before. Is this occurring for anyone else?

Just saw Gone Girl today. For those who have not seen it, our favorite game makes an appearance in that film!

Something I have noticed an increase in is there now appear to be several players with iso levels that are low sometimes even in the negatives with rankings over 5K. I think this is because of adventures now counting as pro games. Anyway, I wanted to make this thread as a heads up to double check someone's iso rating before starting a game. I saw a player with a Goko rating of 5500 but iso of -34.
