Dominion General Discussion / The best 2-card combo
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:41:16 am »
I think it is time to make the list of best combos in the game :) Rules:
1. Only 2card combo counts, but you can assume using other cards (e.g. Vineyard/University would be really bad if there were no other action cards on the board, but there almost always will be).
2. If the combo is stronger with some other kind of support (a village, a trasher etc.) it's a plus for the combo, but you should also count how strong it is without it (let your brain guide you and your heart decide the unclear situations).
3. Please decide on the pure strenght of the combo (e.g. Chancellor+Counting House is a nice synergy of two bad cards, but not a very strong combo).
4. Everybody can sent me his top20 of combos. Every place has to be 2 different cards and no duo shall be repeated (e.g. you can have KC+20 different cards somehow ranked).
5. The deadline for the voting phase will be annaunced after the end of the nomination phase. You can send me your top20 now if you want to (but it is better to wait at the end of the nomination phase).
6. The nomination phase starts now and ends 1st March, 0:00:00 (the last timezone). In this phase, you can post your nominations of combos to this thread, explain why it is good and lobby for that. After this phase ends, I will make a list of nominated combos with names of their "godfathers". Everyone can then choose to vote for any of these OR even for any other. The nomaniton phase serves only for explaining why are certain combos good. Please make your nominations like this: "I nominate card A+card B." and then your explenation not in bold so I can easily find the nominations at the end of the phase.
7. Lobby for any combo you want, but DO NOT tell what will/did you vote for (I want to avoid situtions like "Oh, so *insert your favourite top player* ranks it this, so I will too, cause he is better then me so he knows better...")
8. If you have any questions or suggestions about the rules, feel free to ask!

Puzzles and Challenges / Exception to the rule with Scrying Pool
« on: February 21, 2012, 02:30:22 am »
In which cases do you want to discard an action card you show from your deck with Scrying Pool?

Here are 3 (2 really obscure) cases off the top of my head:

1. Possession probably does some wierd things (I am possessing my opponent and accidentaly played a Possession (through Golem), so now I want to screw my own deck with Scrying Pool, because he will play with it the next turn. (or maybe I just want to have good actions on the top of my deck anyway, cause I don't have Scrying Pool in my next hand)

2. I have also Golem in hand, but there are not-optional trashers in my deck (Remake) and I want to play the Golem, but want to have a better chance that it does not show the Remake. Also I have to reshuffle for this to make a difference. (is there ANY chance this is gonna happen?)

3. My deck is not good enough to reliably draw itself every turn, so I want to discard some Scrying Pools/drawing cards and reshuffle so I have them in my next hand, because they will be useless in this turn anyway. (this is probably the only "happens occasionally" situation for this "exception to the rule")

Variants and Fan Cards / Dominion Heroes
« on: February 10, 2012, 12:55:19 pm »
Additional rule: After the kingdom cards are chosen, each player (starting with the 1st player, or in secret) chooses one of the heroes. He can use abilities of his hero for the whole game. Two players can have the same hero.

That is the basic idea. There will be some hero cards from which you choose the one you find most usefull for that kingdom. Now here are some of my ideas for heroes:

Priest - Once in a turn, you may play any action card as "Trash 2 cards from your hand."
The name is reference to Chapel and Bishop.

Mayor - Once in a turn, you may discard a card. If you do, +1 action.
The name is reference to Villages.

Merchant - Once in a turn, you may discard a card. If you do, +1 buy.
The name is reference to Market.

Count - If you didn't play any card this turn, you may gain a Curse. If you did, gain a Duchy. If you didn't, you may gain 2 Estates. (so basicly you can gain Curse+Duchy, Estate+Estate, Estate (if it is last) or nothing, but you cannot gain Duchy)
The name is reference to Baron and Duke.

Judge - You can play any action card as "+1 action, +1 card"
The name is Judge, because you make a decision whether you want this card or not.

Feel free to comment the names, the general idea and the cards themselfs. Also feel free to playtest, make your own "heroes".

PS: I was thinking about "Sorcerer" that would be giving other players Curses, but I cannot think of any cool and simple idea. Thoughts? "Pirate" that steals treasures sounds cool too...

Game Reports / Mountebank vs. Trader
« on: February 08, 2012, 05:17:44 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201202/08/game-20120208-141131-d04a3ea1.html

We both opened Trader/Silver. I don't like playing on Mountebank when opponent has a Trader, so I decided to go Trader-BM and pick-up more Traders if he picks a Mountebank. He did. And it got messy. And there was no time for Colonies. But I think my strategy was superior here, what do you think?

What do you think about Mountebank vs. Trader in general?

Puzzles and Challenges / Lock your opponent
« on: January 30, 2012, 04:44:38 pm »
We all know the KC-Goons-Masquerade combo. But that doesn't always work, because Goons is an attack. So I wonder - is there a combo, that locks your opponent with 0 cards in hand 100%, every turn and no matter what reactions is he using?

Thoughts:

It probably cannot contain any attack played, cause then he should set aside HT. Also KC-Golem-Masquerade sounds nice, but I can't figure out how to make it 100% working on every turn...

Game Reports / Double Golden Deck
« on: January 18, 2012, 10:11:54 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201201/18/game-20120118-070217-34a32030.html

Okay so the game ended on turn 13, because my opponent counted wrongly, BUT if he didn't, he would have trash his Silver, buy Gold...then I would trash Gold, buy Gold...then he would trash Gold buy Gold...but what would happen when all the Golds will be out? I would probably lose no matter what then...

Any interesting ideas about plans here?

Help! / Chapel + X
« on: January 12, 2012, 01:24:54 pm »
I just finished this game and I am really upset.

When the game started I was thinking a lot whether go for DoubleJack, Chapel+Jack, Chapel+Nomad Camp or just pure Chapel. I was very confident that Chapel+Jack will be the best out of these (and very probably the very best thing on the board). But I lost. Was it a bad luck or did my opponent really had a better plan (trash only Coppers and use Ventures)? And what does simulators think about this game?

PS: Funny thing - this was a veto mode game and I vetoed Crossroad as the only village to slow down Chapel+Jack, because I wanted to go for Chapel+Minion. My opponent vetoed Minion  ;D

Puzzles and Challenges / 13 cards in hand
« on: January 03, 2012, 02:12:39 am »
You have 13 cards in your hand before you played any action this turn. Only 5 cards has been bought/gained until this turn. What are these 5 cards?

Dominion General Discussion / I read it differently
« on: December 31, 2011, 04:51:23 am »
I was thinking and there are some cards that I read differently. I don't mean it as I read Chapel like "supertrasher", I mean it as there are cards that have some optional or special case abilities that I almost don't use and take the card as if it didn't have the ability at all. Here is what I mean:

Name - "What I read"

Pearl Diver - "+1 Card, +1 Action"
Explorer - "Gain a Silver card, putting it into your hand"
Fool's Gold - "If this is the first time you play Fool's Gold this turn this is worth $1, otherwise it's worth $4" (so without the reaction)

Does anyone else do something like this?  ;D

Help! / Possession luck?
« on: December 24, 2011, 07:39:51 pm »
Okay, I just finished a game and I must ask - Did I make a mistake somewhere or was it just very unlucky?

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/24/game-20111224-163137-941711ba.html

I went for Pawn/Gardens combo with a little help from Apothecary (never even played it) and Contraband, hoping my deck would be so full of crap (I bought a Copper everytime I could and always chose "+buy" with Pawn) that Possessing me won't get my opponent anything...but it gave him a second Possession and 2 Duchies!

What do you think?

Puzzles and Challenges / One card - big money
« on: December 23, 2011, 03:34:36 pm »
How much money can you get by playing just one card (just by playing it)?

Example: You can get a lot of usefull cards from Native Village, but that does not count because you did not get any money just from playing NV.

Dominion General Discussion / Biggest losing score
« on: December 18, 2011, 01:06:58 pm »
I'm new here so maybe this topic has already been discussed...

What is the biggest score you ever had and still lost?

Mine is 82:89 http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111111-183249-93b8f11b.html

But I believe somebody has an interesting game with KC and Goons, where even the loser had OVER 9000!!!  :D
