1. Signing up

How do I sign up?
First join the Dominion Discord server (https://discord.gg/jeN2sAB). Second go to the Dominion League board, look for a pinned post with the name “Season XX - Signups” and complete the Google form embedded there. A moderator will send you a direct message via Discord in about a day with a few question to confirm your signup, and a deadline to do so. You must answer this message to be confirmed.

What is required to sign up?
You are required to have a Dominion Online (http://dominion.games) account and join the Dominion Discord server (https://discord.gg/jeN2sAB). You must also have enough time to play five 6-game matches during the 6-week season, which is usually about 2 hrs per week. Note you are also encouraged to play at least 20 rated 2-player games on Dominion Online so the moderators can place you in a tier appropriate for your skill.

I didn’t respond in time to Discord message to confirm my signup. Can sign up again?
If the deadline hasn't passed, you are encouraged to re-sign up by filling out the Google form again.

Do I need a subscription to Dominion Online (http://dominion.games) to sign up?
You do not need to buy a subscription, but you do need to create a free account.

Am I required to play matches on Dominion Online (http://dominion.games)?
No, but this may be the only way to play games against the vast majority of your opponents. Note you are required to have a Dominion Online account and you are encouraged to play at least 20 rated 2-player games there so the moderators can place you in a tier appropriate for your skill.

How good do I need to be at Dominion to sign up?
We welcome players of all skill levels. Players are divided into different tiers so that they can compete against opponents of similar skill.

Do I need to be proficient in the English language to sign up?
You will need basic English skills to communicate on Discord and schedule you matches. Scheduling isn't too difficult, and if you can understand this paragraph, you will be fine. Let a moderator know if you have language issues, and we may have someone who can help translate.

Who do I play against?
You will be put in a division with up to 5 other similarly skilled players.

How do I know who is in my division?
The introductory message in your division’s Discord channel will say who is playing in your division. You can also see which players are in every division in the Standings post, pinned in the Dominion League board.

How do I know who my moderator is?
The introductory message in your division’s Discord channel will say who your moderator is.

2. Discord and the online community

What is Discord? How does it work?
Discord is an instant messaging app. In the Dominion server you can discuss Dominion topics with players all over the world. These discussions are organized into different channels (denoted by #). There are channels for Dominion strategy, the Dominion League, and your specific division.

Do I need to use Discord?
Yes, you are required to have a Discord account and join the Dominion server (https://discord.gg/jeN2sAB).

Why do I need to use Discord?
Discord is where you will message opponents to schedule matches and receive important announcements.

How does the Dominion League use Discord?
You will mainly use Discord to communicate with the other players in your division, and the moderators. You can also see announcements about upcoming matches so you can spectate them, and you can announce your own matches.

How do I see what matches are coming up so I can spectate them?
Check the Dominion calendar.

How do I announce my matches so others can spectate me?
Fill out the Dominion calendar form, and the match will be automatically announced on Discord an hour before it begins.

What is a Town Hall on Discord?
The moderators host Town Halls to gather feedback on a specific topic that doesn’t have clear answers. Town Halls takes place over a 24-hour period in the #town-hall channel on Discord. They begin with a presentation by the moderators on the topic and some of the options under consideration, then everyone is invited to contribute via messages and emoji polls. Following the discussion, the moderators formulate a plan of action based on the feedback, which, if opinion is split on the matter, could involve choosing to collect additional feedback from all League Players via the Returning Form.

3. Scheduling matches

How do I schedule matches?
You will need to coordinate with your opponent via Discord. You can send messages in your division’s channel, or send direct messages to an opponent. It is very beneficial to schedule matches in advance, instead of hoping someone is available to play impromptu.

Do I need to follow the suggested schedule (provided to tier E and below)?
No, but it is provided as a guideline.

May I play multiple matches per week?
Yes. We recommend playing at least one match per week, and encourage you to stay ahead of schedule.

What do I do if my opponent did not show up at our scheduled time?
Please wait 15 minutes past the scheduled time to see if the opponent shows up. If the opponent has still not arrived, notify your moderator. While this can be frustrating, there are many reasons this may happen.

What do I do if I can no longer make it to a match I scheduled?
You should let your opponent know as soon as there is a chance you will be late, or miss the match entirely. If you will miss the match, reschedule with your opponent.

What do I do if someone in my division never responds when I try to schedule with them?
Notify your moderator as soon as possible if someone in your division is unresponsive.

What do I do if it is impossible for me to schedule with someone in my division?
Notify your moderator if your schedule is completely incompatible with someone else’s. Make an effort to schedule matches on the weekend if necessary.

What happens if someone in my division is completely inactive?
If someone does not respond to any other players in their division, or to their moderator, that player will be removed and banned from returning to the League for the next 2 seasons. If they played 3 or more complete matches, the remainder of their games will be simulated. Otherwise, their game results will be voided. If a removed player rejoins the League after their ban ends, they return to the tier below the one they were removed from.

What do I do if I can’t play all my matches in time?
Notify your moderator, and they may be able to grant you an extension of up to 1 week.

What do I do if I can’t finish the season due to unforeseen circumstances?
Notify your moderator as soon as possible and explain your situation. The moderator can remove you if necessary, and can waive the ban if appropriate.

4. Playing matches

What is a match? Is it the same as a game?
A match comprises 6 games of Dominion played against a single opponent. Each season, players play 1 match against each other player in their division.

How long is a match?
Most players play a 6-game match in a single playing session lasting about 2 hours, without breaks. As a courtesy to your opponents, you may want to adjust your play speed if you find your games are considerably longer than this.

Do I have to play all 6 games at once?
No, you can play the games of a match across multiple playing sessions. Make sure your opponent is aware how many games you intend to play in each playing session. Submit the results of each playing session separately as you go, and they will be added together on the standings.

Who should be the starting player each game of a match?
A random player should start the first game, and then the staring player should alternate so each player starts 3 games.

Which cards do we play with?
The default is to play with all the cards either player owns and up to 2 landscapes. If you have a subscription, you get to play with all of the expansions you have. If you do not have a subscription but an opponent does, you may need to learn some new cards. For the lower tiers, we ask (but do not require) the player with expansions to be gracious in these circumstances, for instance, offering to restrict the pool of cards to a few expansions which the other player is a bit more familiar with.

Can I request an undo? Do I need to grant an undo?
The default policy is that granting undo requests is required for low numbers of decisions that do not provide new information, UNLESS players announce a different undo policy before a match. Such grants are commonplace among higher level players, as disallowing them slows the pace of play by forcing players to be ultra-cautious. An example of a no new info undo is when a player means to play Throne Room > Militia, but misclicks the Militia first. No new information about either player is revealed, so the undo request should be granted. Undoing the play of a Smithy, intentional or not, need not be allowed, as playing it reveals the player's next three cards.

What is an undo policy?
An undo policy is a statement to your opponent before a match about what types of undos you will grant to them. Examples:
  • "I will grant an undo of any action that doesn't reveal important new information."
  • "I won't allow any undos."
  • "I will decide whether to allow each individual undo request as it comes up."

How do I report the score of a match?
See the pinned message in your division’s Discord channel for the link to a Google form where you can submit the score of a match. Partial match scores should be submitted as you go, so you don’t forget.

Should both players report their score for a match?
No, one player should submit the scores of both players. Please coordinate with your opponent who is responsible for submitting the score.

Do the players’ VP scores in a game matter for the League?
No, all that matters is who won, or if it was a tie. It does not matter how many VP you won the game with.

Who wins a game if both players have the same VP?
The rules of Dominion say that if both players finish with the same score, the player who took fewer turns (not counting extra turns from cards like Outpost) wins. If both players took the same number of turns, then they tie.

How does the League count games that end in a tie?
If a game ends in a tie, both players get 0.5 wins for that game. For example, if during your match you won 3 games, lost 2 games, and tied 1 game, you get 3.5 wins and your opponent gets 2.5 wins. Note the rule above for games where players have the same VP.

Do I need to record proof of my game results (screenshots, game IDs, etc)?
No, we operate on an honor system. You can also use DomBot on Discord to retrieve the results of recent games. If you disagree about who won a game, notify your moderator.

Why are players in tiers A, B, C, and D required to allow spectators?
Allowing spectators offers League members an opportunity to watch competitive games between some of the top Dominion players. It also allows those players to get feedback after the games. Having spectators at your games can provide you constructive comments to help your future play.

What should I do when spectating a League game?
As a spectator, you can comment on the players’ decisions and discuss strategies with the other spectators. Please refrain from making inappropriate remarks, and be courteous in any critiques. A transcript of the commentary is often given to the players after the game, so they can evaluate their performance and areas for improvement. You may not discuss a game with the players until the game is over; trying to give a competitive advantage to any player is against the Dominion Online terms and conditions, and could result in your account being suspended.

5. Dominion Online (http://dominion.games)

How do I add someone from my division as a friend on Dominion Online?
Click the "Friend List" tab in the lobby, enter your opponent’s username, and click "Add".

How do I make a table?
Click the "New Table" tab in the lobby and choose "Create Table". Note you should also click "Advanced Options" at the table and uncheck "Players can see spectator chat".

How do I find my opponent’s table?
Click the "Tables" tab in the lobby, and find their name. If you are friends, then you can also find their name in the Friends area of the "Matching" tab.

Do we play rated or unrated games?
The default is to play unrated games, but players can agree to play rated games instead. This is also the default setting for a table. Either way, you can use DomBot on Discord to retrieve the results of these games.

Which cards/cardlists do we play with?
The default is to play with all the cards either player owns (including the new Menagerie expansion, if owned) and up to 2 landscapes, to respect the disliked and banned cardlists, and to use no other special rules (such as “Extra Menagerie”). These are also the default settings for a table on Dominion Online. Players can agree to make any changes to this, such as excluding certain expansions or respecting the liked cardlist.

What are cardlists?
Everyone gets 3 cardlists, and each one can have up to 5 Kingdom cards and up to 3 landscapes (Events, Landmarks, Projects, Ways). Putting things on these lists can change the likelihood they show up in your games:
  • Liked list: these things show up twice as often
  • Disliked list: these things show up half as often
  • Banned list: these things never show up
If you and your opponent both have the same card or landscape on their lists, the likelihood it shows up is a product of both your preferences. For details on how this works, see the official cardlist announcement.

How do I set the cardlists at my table?
Click "Advanced Options" at the table, and then set the 3 checkboxes next to “Respect liked/disliked/banned cards”. Checking the leftmost box means the game will use both of your liked cardlists. The middle box corresponds to your disliked cardlists, and the rightmost box to your banned cardlists. Note unless you and your opponent agree otherwise, you should uncheck the leftmost box and check the other two.

How do I set the starting player at my table?
Click "Advanced Options" at the table, and then "Player Order". To have the starting player determined randomly, such as for the first game of a match, check "Random". Otherwise, you can use the arrows to set the player order. Note the username of the player who went first during a game is colored red in the game log and chat box.

Do we use the VP tracker?
The default is to use the VP tracker. This is also the default setting for a table on Dominion Online. Players can agree to turn the VP tracker off, and can do so by clicking "Advanced Options" at the table and unchecking "Show VP tracker".

What other settings should I be aware of?
We encourage you to uncheck "Players can see spectator chat" so that spectators can discuss the game with each other. They are usually willing to share their insights with you after the game.

6. Details and backend

How do the moderators determine the players’ tiers (A, B, C, etc)?
For a new player, their starting tier is decided shortly before the season starts, based on the available spots in the tiers and their Dominion Online (http://dominion.games) level. For a returning player, their tier is based on how they placed in their last season.

How do the moderators group divisions by time zone?
As much as possible, players are grouped by their time zones in tiers D and below. Players may indicate their flexibility on the Returning Form to help us sort players.

How are players seeded?
For all divisions in the same tier (and in the same time zone region, for tiers D and below), players are seeded using a modified snake draft based on previous League performance. New players are seeded above players who are returning to the same tier but below players who are demoting from a higher tier.

What do I do if my regular schedule makes it difficult to play with people from my own time zone?
The easiest way to indicate this is to sign up with the time zone you can most easily play with.

What are promotions and demotions, and how do they work?
Players may earn a spot in a different tier by promoting to the next higher tier or demoting to the next lower tier, based on their place in their division. Note the structure of the League changed starting with season 39, so how promotions and demotions work depends on the season you most recently played:

For players who last played in season 34–38:
  • Players who finish in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place in tier A or in 1st place in tier B, are put into tier A.
  • Players who finish in 5th or 6th place in tier A; in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place in tier B; or in 1st place in tier C, are put into tier B.
  • Players who finish in 5th or 6th place in tier B; in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place in tier C; or in 1st place in tier D, are put into tier C.
  • Players who finish in 5th or 6th place in tier C or in 2nd or 3rd place in tier D, are put into tier D.
  • Players who finish in 4th or 5th place in tier D or in 1st or 2nd place in tier E, are put into tier E.
  • Players who finish in 6th place in tier D or in 3rd or 4th place in tier E, are put into tier F.
  • Players who finish in 5th or 6th place in tier E or in 1st or 2nd place in tier F, are put into tier G.
  • The remaining places in tier F are put into tier H.
For players currently in season 39:
  • Players who finish in 1st place in tiers B, C, and E promote.
  • Players who finish in 1st or 2nd place in tiers D, F, G, and H promote.
  • Players who finish in 5th or 6th place in tiers A, B, C, D, E, F, and G demote.

Here is a visual representation of these rules:

At the end of the season, my division has fewer than 6 players. How does this affect promotion and demotion?
The same places promote and demote as normal. If a place that would demote is vacant, no additional players demote.

If I skip a season, what tier do I return to?
If there is space, you will be placed into the tier you would have been in next, including any promotions or demotions from the last season you played in. If there is not enough space for all players returning, we may offer play-in matches for those players to compete for the available spots. Otherwise you will be offered a position in another tier. Note if you skip 6 or more consecutive seasons, then when you return, you are instead placed into a tier like a new player.

How are play-in matches and free promotions determined?
Sometimes there are open spaces after assigning players to tiers. To fill openings in a tier, the moderators choose eligible players from the next lowest tier to promote, or to compete in play-in matches for the opportunity to promote. Eligible players are those who:
  • Finished in 2nd place their previous season
  • Are new to the League and have a Dominion Online rating similar to players in the tier above
  • Had exceptional cases during the last season they played, such as negative effects from dropping a player or having a strong win record
Then these eligible players are seeded by the League’s algorithm.

In tiers A, B, C, and D: If there are fewer than 2 eligible players per opening, the top seeded players get free promotions until there are 2 eligible players per opening. If there are more than 2 eligible players per opening, the bottom seeded players are removed from eligibility until there are 2 eligible players per opening. The remaining eligible players are paired up with the top seed versus the bottom seed and so on. The winners of these play-in matches promote.

In tiers E, F, and G: All openings are filled via free promotions. When deciding which eligible players get these free promotions, the moderators also consider time zones.

How are the standings calculated?
Players in a division are ordered by the percentage of their games that they’ve won. This placement doesn't matter until everyone has finished the season. If there is a tie for a promotion or demotion spot, the tied players are ordered by their head-to-head results. If they are still tied, they play a tiebreaker match.

What is the +/– column of the standings?
A player’s +/– number represents how many more/fewer wins they have compared to if they had tied all their matches. That is, it is the player’s performance relative to a neutral performance. For example, if you lose a match 2–4, lose a match 1–5, and win a match 4.5–1.5, you have 7.5 wins as opposed to 9, so your +/– is –1.5.

The standings show U1, U2, U3, etc instead of the player names. Are they broken?
No, these are temporary placeholders while the Google sheets update some complicated IMPORTRANGE formulas. Try checking the standings again after a couple hours.

7. Miscellaneous

What are the rules on etiquette?
There are no rules on etiquette, but we encourage you to be friendly and courteous, and we do not tolerate offensive behavior. Saying “good luck” or “have fun” at the start of a match and “good game” at the end of a game are always positive behaviors. Notify the moderators of any offensive behavior. Offensive behavior may result in suspension from the League.

What do I do if there is a player with an offensive username?
Notify the moderators, and we may help them change their username.

Are there ever matches with 3 or players?
No, all matches are played with 2 players.

How can I share ideas about how the League could improve?
You can choose any of these methods you prefer:
  • Contact a moderator via a Discord direct message.
  • Submit your suggestion via the Returning Form.
  • Reply to the latest Newsletter forum post with a fully-written idea.
  • Participate in a Town Hall on Discord.
  • Use the Dominion League Hotline for urgent matters.
  • You are also encouraged to develop your idea by discussing it on Discord.

Dominion League / Season 28 - Call for New Mods
« on: May 12, 2018, 10:10:00 am »
Hello everyone!

The League is run by a team of volunteer moderators, and we're losing two of our number for the coming season due to life circumstances. You know, silly things like having a baby. :P So we need your help! Here's what we do as moderators:
  • Set up the season: Make decisions about tier cutoffs, late signups, free promotions.
  • Welcome new players: Confirm their signups and answer their questions.
  • Be there when things go wrong: Each moderator is responsible for following a number of divisions (this was 6 divisions each in season 27), prodding players to play their matches, and responding to any situations that arise between the players.
If everything in your divisions works as intended, moderators don't have to do anything after the season starts! Of course, that doesn't actually happen; there's always something that comes up. But still, the workload is pretty light and mainly just requires you to respond promptly.

We prefer new moderators to have at least two seasons' experience in the League, and to be in frequent contact on Discord and via forum PMs. Fluency in languages besides English is a plus, particularly French, Chinese, and Japanese, as we try to expand the League's accessibility to those with weaker English skills.

To apply, send the current mods a PM by clicking this link.

Dominion League / Season 27 - End of Season Deadlines
« on: May 12, 2018, 10:05:36 am »
Season 27 officially ends on Sunday, May 20th. To account for the westernmost timezones, the deadline for reporting matches is Monday, May 21st at 15:00 UTC.

If you need extra time to finish, please contact your group moderator. There is a one-point penalty for finishing late two consecutive seasons, assessed to the player(s) responsible for the late finish. It is the group moderator's job to assess responsibility; if it is unclear, make sure to let them know.

The deadline for finishing matches late is one week later. All late finish matches must be reported by Monday, May 28th at 15:00 UTC.

If any matches remain unreported by the late finish deadline, the responsible player(s) will be considered to have dropped mid-season. This means that they are banned for the next two seasons, and automatically demoted when they return. If they played at least two matches to completion, those are kept for the other players' standings, but if they only played a single match, its result is removed.

In addition to finishing your matches, all players must fill out the returning form to tell us whether they will be back for next season. This form was sent to you in a private message; you can also find it in the pinned post in your Discord division channel. The deadline for filling out the returning form is Wednesday, May 30th, at 19:00 UTC (the Season 28 signup deadline). Any players who have not told us whether they will be back by then will be assumed to be not returning.

Dominion League / Season 28 - Signups
« on: April 12, 2018, 03:00:38 pm »
Season 28 will run from Monday, June 4th until Sunday, July 15th and you can sign up until Wednesday, May 30th at 19:00 UTC.

If you are a returning player, please sign up before Sunday, May 27th. Depending on space, you may be required to play a placement match or return at a lower level.

Signups for season 28 are now closed. Go here if you would like to signup for season 29.

Staying in the league
Please don't post here, but fill out the Returning form that you should have been sent in a PM. It’s also pinned in your division-specific channel in Discord.

Returning to the league
If you last played in the Dominion League some time in the past year (Seasons 22 through 26), please post a message here stating your dominion.games username, your timezone*, your Discord username (if you have one, formatted like @___#___), the last season you were in, the division you played and the place you finished. If you last played earlier than that, simply sign up as if you were a new member; see below.

New to the league
Welcome to the League! Please post a message with your dominion.games username, timezone* and, if you have joined the Dominion Discord, your Discord username (formatted like @___#___). Please make sure to state the exact spelling of your username (upper/lower case, special characters, and so on). You will be placed in an appropriate division according to your rating on dominion.games as seen in the client or here. If you would like to be placed in a lower division or there is a reason to suspect your rating does not represent your skill, feel free to describe it in your signup message.

Please check the welcome thread first and read the rules to make sure you're comfortable with the format and the time it takes to play a season. If you have any questions be sure to check out the FAQ. You can also ask questions about the League at the dominionleague channel on the Dominion Discord. If you join, we highly recommend, but do not require, using Discord to communicate with your opponents.

You will also receive a personal message from one of the league moderators within a week to confirm your signup. You must reply to this PM within the specified time frame (2-7 days, depending on how close to the signup deadline it is) or your signup will be removed.

The Google Sheet in the following post will contain all signups as they are processed by the moderators and then confirmed. Please check back again in a few days to make sure your signup was entered correctly.

*When specifying a timezone, please use one of these common examples or use the same format and look yours up in the complete list.

Dominion League / Season 27 - Newsletter: Same League, Grander Scale
« on: April 09, 2018, 12:00:46 am »
Hello new and old Dominion League players!

I'm pleased to announce the beginning of the largest Dominion League season ever. This season, we have 258 players signed up, and we've split you all into 44 divisions. That's more than double the size of any previous League season!

We've also recruited a couple more moderators to help us out with this gigantic season: IrrationalE is returning after a hiatus, and Gazbag is moderating for the first time. Welcome!

With this new scale comes a greater responsibility for all of you to manage your league season yourselves. Here are some tips that everyone should keep in mind:
  • Join the Dominion Discord! We can't emphasize this enough: It's super helpful to be able to communicate realtime with you when it comes to scheduling. We've also added some new features to the League in Discord this season: Channels for just you and your division-mates to find times to play, pinned messages with important information, and automatic postings of results. Last season, around 90% of the League players were on Discord, so in all likelihood your opponents are already waiting for you there.
  • Be proactive in communicating with your opponents and group moderator. If you'll be busy or gone for an extended period of time during the season, let everyone know!
  • When in doubt, stick to the schedule. There's a post in the Scheduling subforum for each division -- go there to find your recommended schedule. Apart from busy periods that you let your moderator know about, we expect you to play at least one game per week, and the schedule offers you one convenient way to do that. Feel free to play your games earlier than recommended, just don't fall behind, especially without sharing your plans to your group and moderator.
  • Announce your matches! There's a Google Calendar for everyone who wants to spectate Online Dominion matches. Once you agree on a time with your opponent, add your matches to the calendar, especially if you're in one of the higher tiers. Conversely, if you like watching Dominion, check out the calendar and watch some of those games!
  • Communicate with your opponent about who will report the score. You should have received a private message from me with the form to report your scores (there are separate forms for each division). It's also pinned in your division-specific channel in Discord for convenience. Exactly one of you should fill it out; make sure to discuss who will do this after the match. If you double-report, message me and I can remove the extraneous report, but try not to do that. ;)
  • Let us know if you'll be back for season 28 by filling out the Google form sent to you in the same PM and pinned in your division's channel in Discord. You aren't expected to let us know until you've played all of your games, but if you want to do so earlier, feel free.
Finally, I'd like to offer some personal reflection from my perspective. First, I'd like to thank Stef, the developer of dominion.games (and founder of the League!), who generously gave us the opportunity to advertise directly on the client and recruit so many new League players. We knew from the big ShuffleIT tournament last fall that hundreds of people are interested in competitive online Dominion, but many of them (and others) simply hadn't heard about the League.

I think we're ready for this kind of scale. When I first converted the League to this Google Sheets-based system a season ago, scalability was one of my main goals. The League should now run itself: Players schedule matches with each other on Discord, add them to the calendar for everyone else to watch, and then report their scores using the Google forms, which will automatically update the standings. The returning form fits the final piece of this puzzle in; now we don't have to track you down one-by-one to find out if you'll be back (as well as letting you give us feedback).

Of course, adding this many new players to the league will obviously come with growing pains. We've tried to mitigate this risk by enforcing a rule that we didn't always in the past: All new signups had to reply promptly to a private message to confirm their spot. In fact, some of you reading this might have thought that you signed up but don't find yourself on the lists and didn't receive the PMs I'm talking about. This is probably because you didn't reply in time to messages from my fellow moderator gloures! Fortunately, you can still sign up late, and if there's space for you, we'll add you to an appropriate division.

If you have any issues, don't hesitate to reach out to your group moderator!

Your administrative moderator,

Dominion League / Season 26 Champion Match: Tues Mar 20th at 21:00 UTC
« on: March 13, 2018, 12:51:11 am »
This season's Champion Match between markus and Mic Qsenoch will take place next Tuesday, March 20th, at 21:00 UTC. Both competitors won the same number of games in the regular season, but markus enters with the tiebreaker due to having one more win against an opponent who finished higher in the final standings. The match will last six games, as usual; markus will need to win only 3, while Mic Qsenoch will need to win 3.5. If one of them reaches that total before the final game, they will still play all six games out, so you'll get to see six great games of high quality Dominion no matter who wins.

The match will be streamed on Twitch with commentary from aku chi, gloures, and myself. You are also welcome to watch in the client and comment there. Hope you can make it!

Dominion League / Proposed Change for Season 27: B Champion Matches
« on: February 23, 2018, 06:14:05 pm »
Hi everyone! As one of your league moderators, I've been looking at various ways to make the league better. I'd like to share an idea I've had that, if a combination of the players in the league and my fellow moderators agree, wouldn't go into effect until next season. (To be clear, I haven't won them over yet, and opinions here are my own, not the moderator team's as a whole).

If you're new or otherwise aren't aware, at the end of every season, the top two players from A play in a "Champion Match" to determine the league champion that year. The results of this 6-game match are added to the season's results, which just means that sometimes the leader only needs to win one or two of the six games. The Champion Match is a big event at the end of the year; it's usually streamed on Twitch with commentary and lots of spectators.

My proposal is to add analogous Champion Matches to other divisions. That is, for the prize of promoting to the next level, the top two players from each division would play an additional 6-game match, and those results would be added to the final results of the division to determine the winner. To the extent possible, we would also make big events out of these Champion Matches with streaming and commentary.

In particular, I'd most like to see this happen in the B division, where the prize (promotion to A) and quality of play are both highest. If it's successful and scales, we could potentially extend it to C, D, and E in subsequent seasons, but for now my proposal is simply to add a champion match to the two B divisions.

The main reason I'd like to see this is to add more end-of-season events like the Champion Matches in A. Those are nice for building community, showcasing talent, and (to a lesser extent) providing a dramatic finale to the season. B Champion Matches would ideally achieve the same goals, and additionally would also help ensure that those who promote into A are the best against strong competition (not that we've had any problems with that in the past).

There could also be an additional twist: The second-place finisher from B2 could play the top finisher from B1, and vice-versa. We balance the divisions (by rating at the beginning of the season) so there isn't a concern about imbalance, but it could happen that two players from the same division both have exceptionally good seasons, yet (under the current system, and under my proposal without this twist) only one of them may advance. Additionally, this cross-division battle would make for new matches that didn't take place during the season, unlike the current champion's matches.

What do you think? At some point we might hold a vote, but for now I'm most interested in hearing whether this is something that league participants would be interested in.

Dominion League / Season 26 has started and runs until Mar 25
« on: February 09, 2018, 01:13:38 am »
Hello everyone,

Season 26 is kicking off this week! You may start scheduling and playing matches now. The final deadline for completing and reporting your matches is 26 Mar 2018, 15:00 UTC.

The biggest change this season comes in the way that results are reported. Rather than a results post that is then tabulated by moderators, you will be reporting your scores directly via Google form, which will then automatically populate the standings. Keep in mind that there is a delay of up to 5 minutes for the standings to refresh.

All participants should have received a PM from me (samath) with the link to their division's Google form; we are not releasing these publicly to avoid spam/forgeries. If you are participating in the league this season and did not receive a PM, please send me a message ASAP. Just as with the results post, each match should only be reported once. The form should be pretty intuitive, but if you make any mistakes, contact your moderator and they can fix them.

Without the Results thread, we also need a place to list whether you will be returning for season 27 after all of your matches are completed. You can indicate whether you are returning for next season one of two ways: Either send a private message to your group's moderator, or reply in your group's scheduling thread.

As in the previous season, Nocturne is in by default, although you can still mutually agree to not use it (as is true for any expansion).

We still have openings in divisions C, D and potentially E if you or anyone else you know wants to join! Sign up here by Friday, February 16th at 19:00 UTC.

Have fun, everyone!

Sam

Puzzles and Challenges / Interesting Donate Board
« on: December 25, 2017, 01:30:25 am »
I rolled this board today, and after discussing it on Discord it seems like a good challenge to put here. How quickly can you win?

Here's the kingdom if you want to try it online: Develop, Storeroom, Bridge, Rats, Sacrifice, Bandit, Hunting Party, Wine Merchant, Altar, King's Court, Alms, Donate (also require Colonies and Shelters)

Here's the best we can do (pretty sure it's best possible): We can get a guaranteed win in Turn 7 from any starting hand.

And here's how:
For a 5/2 start: 1) Donate to 3 Copper, 2) Pay off Debt, 3) Alms for a Bridge, 4) Play Bridge, Alms for a Wine Merchant, 5) Play Wine Merchant and buy King's Court, 6) King's Court the Bridge, Alms for another King's Court, buy two Bridges, and Donate the Coppers away, 7) KC-KC-Bridge-Bridge-Bridge and buy the Province pile (plus a Colony and a Duchy if you want).
For any other start: 1) Alms for a Bridge, 2) Donate to Bridge + 3 Coppers, 3) Pay off Debt, 4-7) Same as above.

In the style of the Sandwich Alignment Chart, I present to you the Dominion Engine Alignment Chart. It's meant to classify Dominion players by their opinion of what counts as an engine. How many of these nine would you agree with?

Puzzles and Challenges / Dominion Card Substrings Sporcle Quiz
« on: November 08, 2017, 01:02:51 pm »
Test your memory of Dominion card names with this new Sporcle quiz I created! The challenge is to find all Dominion card names that have another card name hidden inside of them. For instance, if “Dominion” were also a card name, it would count, because it contains “Minion” as a substring. The substring doesn’t have to be the beginning or end of the word, but it does have to consist of consecutive letters — “Donate / Dominate” doesn’t count. Quiz includes all revealed Nocturne card names to date.

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / On-trash benefits in Dark Ages
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:43:41 am »
Trashing is obviously a theme of Dark Ages, and I'm expecting that a lot of us are looking for combos that involve trashing cards for various benefits and then possibly Graverobbing them or something. To help us figure out if those things would be worth it, here's a list of all the on-trash benefits in Dark Ages. The cost is listed to the left in case you want to combine with a trash-for-benefit.

(1*) Overgrown Estate: +1 Card.
(2) Squire: Gain an Attack card.
(4) Feodum: Gain 3 Silvers.
(4) Fortress: Put it into your hand.
(4) Rats: +1 Card.
(5) Catacombs: Gain a cheaper card.
(5) Cultist: +3 Cards.
(5) Sir Vander: Gain a Gold.
(6) Hunting Grounds: Gain a Duchy or 3 Estates.

Some initial observations:
  • Farmland a Hunting Grounds into a Province and gain a duchy to go with it! +11 VP.
  • Apprentice now seems much more powerful. For instance, a Fortress in hand turns each Apprentice into +4 Cards +1 Action, equivalent to three labs!
  • A lot of trash-for-benefits are terminal. Which means if you play it as your last action, those +Cards abilities might not really help you that much.

Council Room Feedback / ChampionPrizeFighter with Outpost?
« on: August 02, 2012, 04:33:24 pm »
I got all the prizes on one turn, but I used an Outpost to do so. I feel like this deserves a Champion Prize Fighter, but it doesn't give it to me. :(
