Mm.. maybe a bit soon, but: I can't seem to reach Redwoods. His profile says he was last active on january 5th this year, so it is very well possible that I won't be able to reach him with a pm on this forum. Does the organization have another way of messaging him, maybe?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Card-specific beginner traps
« on: December 04, 2012, 04:48:05 pm »
Workshop is one that I think many players first over-buy (filling they're decks with terminals, for example), then with some experience under-buy (not noticing when it can accelerate an engine deck), before finding a good balance.

Spy is another one that I think many beginning players buy too often.

We definitely overbought Ironworks, just gaining more Ironworks with Ironworks, without a clear purpose for them all. One of the most popular cards in Intrigue for weeks. We played some rubbish games :)

@DG and jsh: definitely good points. I never thought I would just find silent agreement on this forum :) Especially the Cartographer/Scout/Apothecary etc. functionality DG mentioned can be very strong.

Could anybody give me some feasible scenarios where Lookout still outclasses Forager? Non-terminal trashing for that price is pretty good, but Forager gives +$ (sometimes a lot), +buy ánd control over what it is you're trashing. All Lookout gives in return is a slightly larger handsize and a bit of cycling. Right?

Oh, and to chime in on the Rogue discussion: it (obviously) combo's incredibly with Feodum. Graverobber will do, but Rogue gives +$2 to buy silvers and new Feodums.

Well, it's a one-shot. I think a little AP is ok. The problem with, for example, Pearl Diver, is that it's a cheap cantrip beginning players buy too many of.

KC-KC-Emargo-Embargo on Feodum, buy Feodum, Reveal Trader 36 times.

I love this idea... but 36?

I would say:
Estate : Greathall :: Copper : Bazaar

I think 2 count is enough, don't forget the copper gaining is very helpful.

My experience is, 3 counts is ideal. Of course, it depends on the speed of your opponent's deck.

In my crowd it has been said that this is the game Munchkin should have been. The same kind of humour would have definitely fit, and it's much more enjoyable.
For its lightness, the length is also much better (Munchkin tends to drag). I really like GoF as a filler!

Back in high school, I wanted to sound as dramatic as I could - best I could manage was in_dubio. That stuck for years, until it started to annoy me. I started using Dub in local video games, but that was either too short or taken on any forum. So Dub became DubDub.

etc.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Cards with loop statements

Because it says "Do the following until you reveal a hand with no victory cards."
So a hand with just curses would stop the loop.

Yeah, really cool!

Have you tested them? I find it hard to measure how strong Whittler will be. It has bits of Procession and Band of Misfits in it, both cards I haven't quite mastered yet. Maybe $5 is a bit steep - it does cost an (expensive) action card from your hand every time you play it (besides being a way to get rid of your Ruins and Swindlered cards).

I think Cleaner is really strong, but only in the right situations. $3 is probably right. It needs to be reworded, though. The current wording enables an infinite loop.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Can't beat Lady Marigold - Act 1, Game 14
« on: October 23, 2012, 06:34:07 am »
To beat her without zaps, I eventually had to buy two villages and hope for perfect shuffle luck. It took me a couple of play throughs, but this way I managed to get exactly 40 cards, which was enough to get a 1VP lead.

I saw a simple little Alchemy set before me: http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201210/22/game-20121022-051116-22b5bcef.html
Decided to dip straight into double potion to Transmute into Vineyards. I was uncontested there, so I felt good; especially since Great Hall was there for a perfect third pile.
But after a quick started, I slowed down too much. He upgraded his Pirate Ships to $6 and kill one of my potions (very glad I bought two) and raked in 2 double province turns.

I managed to win with a lucky courtyard, picking up my potion just in time. What could I have done better? I bought lots of coppers to fuel my Transmutes - mistake against his PS's?

Hm.

Right, so the exact opposite: be more elaborate and drain the vp before finishing. Got it. Not doing that. :)

Goko Dominion Online / getting those 3 stars
« on: October 15, 2012, 12:45:57 pm »
Just started playing the adventures. The first couple of levels are of course very simple - there's not really any way to lose. But getting a three star rating is a problem :)
True, I'm not playing optimally, jerking around with elaborate baseset engines instead of something simpler. But I consistently beat the bots with like 44 to 5 or something, still getting 1 star. So what is this rating based on? Mainly on number of turns? *only* on number of turns?

Game Reports / Re: Embargo everything!
« on: October 11, 2012, 06:26:07 am »
Recently had a fantastic game with embargo, warehouse and treasure map (and some source of +buy, I believe Market). I stupidly went for treasure maps with warehouse help, but being just a little careful, I opened with 2 warehouses. As expected, my 5/2 opponent swiftly embargoed TM's, forcing me to really think.
It drove me into the arms of Counting House, supported by a lot of warehouses, cellars, and +buy. Had a lot of fun trying to make this work, and nailed it :)

Hey,

1   Zoveel mogelijk potjes spelen
2   Tegen mensen wiens niveau zo dicht mogelijk bij dat van jou ligt
3   Andere dominionspelers leren kennen.

I say: let online Dominion be used to determine the best player overall, and let real life Dominion have its share of luck.
Yes. I think we should keep this in mind.

About talking Dutch/English: I got some PM's from another board member who might be willing to help us out if necessary even though he's in the US; I reckon there really is some interest among other members.

I would be willing to try out the 30-35min rule. Anybody against? Maybe 35 extended to 45?

And Jetege, thanks for your thoughts - you make some really good points. I would like to focus on these three of your goals:
-   Participants can play as much games as possible in a day
-   Participants play against people of similar skill most of the time
-   Getting the opportunity to meet other dominion players

Just wandering how you(dubdubdubdub) got a photo to show up on the forum.  I tried copying it from my pics and nothing happened.  Maybe need to have it online first to copy URL?
Thanks guys!

That's right. Just add [ img]image URL[ /img] to your post (without the blanks) and it will show. I got that image from Google Image search, btw.

Don't you think it might be a bit of an anticlimax for most attendants when the game ends with not one but 4 winners?

I think a 5 round Swiss is not enough. You will get a lot of tie scores.
If you want a Swiss system you probably need 8 rounds or more.
A disadvantage in a Swiss tourney (in chess often) is that there is no real final. You play 8 rounds or whatever and the one who wins the most is the champ.

Is there a problem with this? Who needs a final? I actually think this sounds good.

I think we're on the right track here. 2p, swiss, we just need to figure out how to select sets and where we're getting our material.
A multy-day tournament sounds like a no-go to me, because of scheduling issues, venue cost, etc, but I'm not against it, personally.
Let's assume it's a one day thing. If we start at 10.30 and really start a new round every hour, we can play 5 rounds before the finals have to start, around 15.30. If the rest comes down to final 4, we could play 3 rounds of semi-finals (so everyone plays everyone once). 18.30. Final two play best out of three: 21.30u.

That's a very long day. Is there a way to fit a tournament-done-right into one day? Or should we just settle for something a little more casual? If the final is played with a cool, pre-determined set, maybe it can be a single round.
