Dunno, yes, lol yes without the extension it would be as unplayable as ever, without the cards it's pretty annoying, yes, no idea/opinion.

Chapel at $2 runs into the "Chapel problem", which is ridiculousness when someone opens 5/2 with some power $5 on the board.

Chapel at $3 runs into the "Ambassador problem", which is ridiculousness when someone opens 5/2 with Ambassador on the board.

Either way, you have problems, and I don't know which is preferrable. When both players open the same, well, it doesn't really matter much. You're buying it anyway, probably.

Two alternative explanations for p1's behaviour:

1. He didn't realize that playing Possession out of P2's hand would give P2 control, rather than himself.
2. He was just on auto-pilot and played what was available instead of actually thinking it through.

I asked why he did it.  He responded that it was to stop me from winning by allowing P2 to win.

Next time, you might want to lead off with this, seems kinda relevant.

That's certainly pretty douchey of him. I think resigning and posting about it here is pretty silly, but certainly a lot less so than before I read the above post.

"I find nothing baby-like in conceding during a multiplayer game to allow the other opponents to finish."

The baby-like part comes from being butthurt over P1 trying to maximize his chances of winning, and it negatively affecting you. I mean yeah, in your follow-up post you say that this clearly wasn't a strategic decision, but well, I dunno about that, man. I'm still going with burthurtedness.

"I also don't see how giving P2 the lead gave P1 a better chance to win."

There's a lot of ways this could happen. Say P2 gets 2 Provinces on his "bonus" turn. Then you get 2 Provinces on your turn. Doesn't seem unreasonable with a strong Governor deck. Then P1 plays Possession and buys any victory card (Estate), then Province during P2's Possession turn. 25-24-24 to P1. This seems totally reasonable. Obviously the real game would probably be more complicated with Governor trashing and stuff, but there you go. In fact, it sounds like this is exactly what happened in the game, since you say you quit with 1 Province remaining, so supposedly P2 got two during his bonus turn and then you grabbed two before quitting the game. Seems like P1 has huge winning chances at that point.

So P1 makes an in-game play resulting in higher winning chances for him, and you call it king making and quit like a baby?

There must be some element to the story I'm missing here. Also there are 3 Provinces left, no?

Dominion Articles / Re: How to open here?
« on: June 09, 2013, 05:47:24 am »
I think this is a very difficult board to analyze fwiw, mostly because of Bishop.

When figuring out what to open, you should ask yourself what your plan is. How are you winning with this deck? On a board with Chapel/Bishop, you should be aware of the strategy of trashing down to a 5 card deck consisting of Bishop, Gold, Gold, Silver, Province. Each turn, you trash the Province for 5 VP, then buy another Province. This is often a strong strategy, and the first one you should consider on Chapel/Bishop boards. Here, there's a good counter against that deck though, Militia. If you go for the 5 card deck, and your opponent goes for a deck which can play Militia every turn, you're probably losing. Your counter strategy against a deck which plays Militia every turn might be a 5 card deck consisting of Bishop, Gold, Gold, Market, Market. This gets you a guaranteed $6 every turn after trashing a Gold, so you can buy a new Gold, and repeat the cycle with a 4 VP gain every turn. However, this deck can not end the game, since it doesn't buy Provinces. Is 4 VP every turn enough to beat a Militia-every-turn deck? Well, probably not against a perfect opponent.

If you were to go for the above 5 card deck, your opponent could set up a 10 Market/10 Throne Room type deck which probably has a much stronger end game than the 4 VP a turn deck. It could use Workshop to quickly gain cards to trash to Bishop(s), probably winning the end game pretty comfortably as far as I can tell. It could of course also buy Provinces to end the game if it was necessary. Plus, you know, play a Militia every turn. I don't see how any 5 card deck beats it, and a weaker "normal" deck aiming to buy Provinces will probably lose to a huge Rabble chain in the end game (say the deck aiming for Provinces buys 4 Provinces. Now the opponent plays 10 Rabbles a turn while setting up a Bishop win. I'm guessing this is doable, while the Province player is semi locked. There's also Thief which may or may not come into play at that stage of the game).

The best counter I can see against a big Throne Room/Market/x/y/z engine is to go for it myself. Maybe I'm wrong, I suck at this type of board.

Now that we know what our strategy is, we can go back to the opening and early game. Opening Chapel is a given. Opening Militia is probably necessary too; hitting the opponent on his Chapel turn is super huge and might come close to deciding the game on the spot, and denying us the chance of having that happening seems risky. After that, we really want to get to $5 to get a Market, and then Throne Rooms. It's tough to say exactly when and in what order etc, it will depend too much on what happens with the Militias and Chapels in both decks. Picking up a Workhop at the right moment might be what wins you the Throne Room split, too.

I've always secretly laughed at people who got card text wrong, because, like, how is that even possible? It's right there!

Then a few days ago, after getting crushed by the card a billion times on goko without understanding why, I finally realized you get the extra bonus from Ironmonger regardless of whether you discard the card or not. Oops!

[Still plenty of actions...]

What's this from?

Arrested Development.

If you have Netflix or Amazon Prime, you can stream the original three seasons. It originally got cancelled 2006, but Netflix has produced a fourth season that's coming out in 3 weeks (plenty of time to watch the first three seasons).

I tried to watch AD two years ago, but didn't really get hooked on it after 1 season. The last two weeks I've been giving it another shot, and it's really good. I would recommend pretty much everyone to watch it.

Yessssssss

A note about Courtyard is that it's not as good as comments here would indicate, as often when you get Familiar on turn 4, you will have triggered a reshuffle already, which is kinda ugly (all of Potion, Familiar and Courtyard won't be in your deck).

and,

It was pretty obvious to anyone who paid attention. If people cared about goko rating the same way we used to care about the isotropic leaderboard, it would have been handled a long time ago.

ST,

See that just blows my mind. All I ever did was play level ~30+ players, except when I played my lvl 25 RL friend, who was somehow better than any sub 35 player. How he was level 25 while being very very competent while a level 20 player is apparentely close to incompetent to the point of 95% winrates is very strange to me. Then again I guess we just had different isotropic experiences.

Yeah I was #1 literally for 1 or 2 games, that didn't last very long heh. What I mean to say by that is that 7150 on goko last week seems much tougher to maintain than level 50 on isotropic 2 months ago. The whole "lose one game, win 8 in a row to get the rating back" thing didn't exist on isotropic, I'm sure other top players on isotropic will agree with me. No one expects you to win 8 out of 9 games against half competent opponents, it's just not sustainable in dominion.

I haven't played a single "I should win 19 out of 20" opponent on Goko so far, and it surprises me you think they exist in abundance.
