Ive always used the auto matcher to get games and I end up declining fairly often because I dont enjoy some decks. Anyone else do this or do you just take what comes?

Don't use auto match then... I realise I am having a go at you (and others) with my comments here but it really is very frustrating to use auto match and have players decline you.

Basically if you want to play with/without certain cards and against players of a certain skill level you can do this manually. It is really very frustrating to be declined once and then be matched against the very same player straight away (even worse when they accept the 2nd one..).

Perhaps the automatch interface could be improved, but until it is I would ask players to either accept the luck of the draw or not to use automatch.

I really dont get this view. What is so frustrating about waiting 5 seconds for a new deck/opponent and why would accepting the second one be even worse?

Because it feels like some players cherry pick the decks they like. I just take it as it comes for auto match, and there are a few cards I dislike.

I have no issues with players liking/disliking certain cards, just don't use auto match to choose your games if this is the case.

I'd like to see new cards speed up the game, by that I mean shorten the average turn time.

Simple answer: No.

Why? Well why shouldn't such a strong card like Minion have a strong counter? New cards should be challenging your assumptions about existing cards.

I would say Black Market is my least favourite card.

The issue with Black Market is that it brings cards into play that may severely inbalance the game (of course, it can also be a fools errand wasting turns to chase the card you want).

Luck is always going to be a factor in Dominion, but over time better players win more games through knowledge of card combinations and strategy.

I don't believe there is a "Black Market strategy", or more importantly, no way to counter someone persuing Black Market cards.
I'm struggling to explain issue coherently, but I just feel like Black Market brings in 'too much luck'...

How to fix this? It is tricky, because cards are only good and bad depending on what's in the supply. Therefore "banning" certain cards from it would cause endless arguments.

I was introduced to the game this year and have the following comments.

You are in a very good situation in that you are playing with friends and all learning together. There is nothing worse for a newbie than to be playing againt a dominion geek who will instantly recognise the best strategy to go for from any available set of cards. You will sit waiting for them to churn out their long chain and buy multiple provinces in one turn...

I'd say just keep enjoying playing with your friends - it is all about having fun after all!

I will make some comments about newbie strategy, but I must stress this is merely from my own observations of playing and learning in a short time of playing.

1) At the start of the game look for what cards are NOT there. By this I mean is there a shortage or absence of a certain bonus? For example if there are no cards that give you additional actions there is no point having many action cards in your deck; you may want to consider going for treasure and +cards/+$ action cards in this case.

2) In the buy phase, don't just buy the most expensive card you can, sometimes a lower value card can be one you need. Don't underestimate the value of a +buy, there are some amazing $2/3 cards in Dominion and you may wish to pick up 2 of them in one turn. Sometimes making no buys is your move.

3) Attack cards can be fun, but always think "what is the benefit for me?". Slowing down your opponents can be the benefit you are seeking, but don't simply attack them because they attacked you. Revenge is a dish best served with cold Victory Points.

4) You are correct that buying coppers and estates is generally not the way to go, but then sometimes it is... Confusing isn't it?    For now all I will say is that don't buy them unless you know why you are buying them. If you feel that the end of the game is approaching buy any Victory Points that you can.

5) There is no such thing as a good card and a bad card. Some cards do have limited uses, but they are all useful given the right circumstances. An early mistake I made was seeing a card I did well with in a previous game and rushing to buy it again because "it was good for me last time!".

That's all I can think of for now. As I said in the beginning you are in a good place, don't rush to read every strategy guide. Play and learn with your newbie friends. Discuss strategy between yourselves after games.
