Other Games / Short List for Buying New Game This Christmas
« on: November 10, 2012, 09:43:37 am »
Each year, my wife and I buy one game to had to our game closet. (We are also planning on buying Dark Ages, hooray!)

Here is our shortlist of potential games to buy:

citadel
power grid
King of Tokyo
Race for the Galaxy

I know there are list of other games out there, but our specifications are kinda unique. Let me explain.

We currently own: Dominion, Carcassonne, Bang, Ticket to Ride, Small World, Pandemic, Wizard and Killer Bunnies.  Of the above we most often play Dominion and Carcassonne followed by Ticket to Ride and Pandemic. We typically enjoy games with a shorter playtime (30 minutes) so that we can get in a couple of games on a Saturday night. We like Small World, but have found it takes too long for us to really like it. Bang and Killer Bunnies we play with large groups of friends who aren't quite as into gaming.

Mostly we are looking for a game that can be played in ~ 30 minutes. works for 2 players. and has a dynamic different from the above mentioned games.

Feedback / E-mail Notification
« on: October 31, 2012, 07:17:56 pm »
Anyone else having trouble with getting e-mail notification.

For a long time I had it set up that I would receive notification via e-mail whenever someone responded to a thread I had previously posted on, or when I received a personal message.

However, at some point today, that stopped working and wasn't preceded by any forum account change by me. I noticed that I hadn't received any e-mail notifications and thought that fds was either down or was having a very quiet day, until I logged in here and saw that there had been many replies that didn't get forwarded to my e-mail.

Is this service being eliminated. If so, any chance of not eliminating it?

Welcome to Mafia XVI - Gambling with Death in Casino Helsinki

I talked to O and confirmed that he would be ok with me starting my game before his. This game will not start until Insomniac's Switch game is at least into Day 2, but it may start after that depending on the mafia load at that time. In all likelihood, the draft process (see below) will start when that game starts Day 2 and will officially start a few days after.

Player List
1. cayvie
2. Insomniac
3. Cuzz Mafia Goon Killed Night Night 3
4. Eevee Town Neighborizer Killed Night 1
5. Robz Town Jailkeeper Killed Night 3
6. ashersky Vanilla Townie Lynched Day 4
7. TheMunch Mafia Rolecop Lynched Day 5
8. Captain_Frisk replaced by Eevee2 Town One-Shot Vigilante Killed Night 4
9. Voltgloss Town Night 3 Vigilante Killed Night 5
10. Abra655 replaced by Axxle Vanilla Townie lynched Day 2
11. jotheonah Town Cop Killed Night 2
12. Archetype Town One-Shot Watcher Lynched Day 3
13. shraeye Vanilla Townie lynched Day 1
14. ehunt

This game run a Pick Your Power set up. This set up is a 14-player open setup with 16 possible roles included in the game, each role paired with another. Players will participate in a pregame draft for a chance to bid on a set of roles. Players winning a role will pick one of the two in the set. Players can obtain a role regardless of alignment, so it is possible to see some interesting combinations.

Basic Setup

3 Mafia
11 Townies
Both can be any of the following pairs.
 - Night 3 Vigilante OR Vengeful
 - 1-Shot Vigilante OR 1-Shot PGO (active)
 - Cop OR 1-Shot Redirector
 - 1-Shot Commuter OR 1-Shot Watcher
 - Doctor OR Roleblocker
 - Universal Backup OR Role Cop
 - Neighborizer OR Fruit Vendor
 - Jailkeeper OR Tracker

Mechanics

 - At the beginning of the game, there is a draft to determine the order for the bidding on roles.
 - Once this has happened, each player will send in the role they'd like to be. Only one role from each "slot" will be awarded, for example; there cannot be a Doctor and a Roleblocker in the game.
 - As such, in the event multiple players select the same role (or the same "slot"), the player highest in the draft order wins the role, whilst the others remain Vanilla.
 - Roles are then distributed and Day 1 begins.
 - Throughout the bidding phases, the thread is locked.

The Draft

 - Once alignments have been dealt out, each player must send a (whole) number back to the mod, with the lowest unique number winning the draft. Second place is awarded to the second lowest unique number and so on, until all unique numbers have been exhausted. Next placed on the list is the lowest doubled numbers, followed by the next lowest doubled numbers, and so on. Continue this same process for triples and quadruples.
 - In cases of multiple players selecting the same number, the higher placed between these players is chosen randomly.
 - The whole numbers sent in will be published in draft order, but not with the owners of the numbers listed. This is to prevent the first player listed to be confirmed "power role."

Bidding for Roles

- Once the draft order has been determined, each player PM's the moderator of the game with the role they'd like to be. Roles are unisex, in the sense, that they can be selected by Mafia or Town. So, it's possible to have a Mafia 1-Shot Vig or a Town 1-Shot Vig, and so on.

Other Information

 - An individual Mafia member cannot nightkill and use a power on the same night.
 - Tracker/Role Cop/Watcher/Cop results will be worded in a way to stay ambiguous to redirection; "Your target went X" or "Your target is X", for example.
 - Mafia will be given access to a quicktopic, but are not allowed to discuss pregame until roles are sent out.  Mafia does not have a daytalk
 -  There can be at most 8 power roles in the game and at least 1. Any player who does not win a power role, regardless of alignment will become either a Vanilla Townie or Vanilla Mafia Goon.

Role Descriptions

Night 3 Vigilante OR Vengeful
Congratulations, you have won the Night 3 Vigilante OR Vengeful Role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
Night 3 Vig: On Night 3 only, you may select a player in the game to nightkill.
Vengeful: If you are lynched, you may select a player in the game to vengekill before the game goes to night.

1-Shot Vigilante OR 1-Shot PGO
Congratulations, you have won the 1-Shot Vigilante OR 1-Shot PGO role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
1-Shot Vig: On one night of your choice, you may select a player in the game to nightkill.
1-Shot PGO: On one night of your choice, you may elect to "arm" yourself. If you do, you kill anyone who targets you that night.

Cop OR 1-Shot Redirector
Congratulations, you have won the Cop OR 1-Shot Redirector Role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
Cop: Each night, you may investigate one player in the game and learn their alignment.
1-Shot Redirector: On one night of your choice, you may select a player to "redirect". If they are using an action that night, they will be redirected to another player of your choice. The player you target will not be informed of your redirect.

1-Shot Commuter OR 1-Shot Watcher
Congratulations, you have won the 1-Shot Commuter or 1-Shot Watcher Role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
1-Shot Commuter: On one night of your choice, you may elect to "commute", which will render you immune to all actions on that night. If you are investigated, the player investigating you will receive the wording "no result."
1-Shot Watcher: On one night of your choice, you may watch a player of your choice and learn who targeted them (if anyone). If the player you watch is not targeted, you will receive the wording "No result."

Doctor OR Roleblocker
Congratulations, you have won the Doctor OR Roleblocker Role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
Doctor: Each night, you may select a player in the game to protect from one nightkill.
Roleblocker: Each night, you may select a player in the game to roleblock. This will prevent them from using an action. The player you target will not be informed of your roleblock. If you block an investigative role they will receive the wording "no result."

Universal Backup OR Role Cop
Congratulations, you have won the Universal Backup OR Role Cop Role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
Universal Backup: After the first powerrole has died, you will inherit their role. If the first roles to die are multiple people at night, you will inherit one of those roles randomly. If you inherit a role that is a 1-shot and the dying player had already used the 1-shot, your power will be used up.
Role Cop: Each night, you may investigate one player in the game and learn their role. Mafia Goons and Vanilla Townies will both investigate as Vanilla.

Neighborizer OR Fruit Vendor
Congratulations, you have won the Neighborizer or Fruit Vendor Role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
Neighborizer: Each night, you may create a neighbourhood with another player in the game. You will now have access to a quicktopic thread with this player for use at any time. Each player you neighborize will be given an individual quicktopic, meaning that fellow neighbors cannot communicate with each other, only with you.
Fruit Vendor: Each night, you may target a player in the game and give them a piece of fruit. The fruit does nothing.

Jailkeeper OR Tracker
Congratulations, you have won the Jailkeeper OR Tracker Role. Please specify before D1 starts which role you'd like to be.
Abilities:
Jailkeeper: Each night, you may choose to "Jailkeep" someone, which will simultaneously protect them from one nightkill and roleblock them. Players who are Jailkept can still be investigated.
Tracker: Each night, you may select a player in the game to track. You will find out who they targeted that night (if anyone). If the player you track does nothing you will receive the wording "no result"

PGO Activation
Roleblocking
Redirecting
Protecting (Jailkeeper, Doc)

Mini-Set Design Contest / Play Testing Recruiter
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:39:44 pm »
Tested Recruiter last night with the wife:

Quote
Recruiter
$5 - Action-Attack

Choose one: +1 Action and gain an Attack card from the supply; or all other players gain a Curse card.
--
If you have played 2 or more Attack cards this turn (counting this): +$1.

Played two games with it. One with other Attack cards, one w/o.

The first game cards: Recruiter, Margrave, Upgrade, Jester, Harem, Grand Market, Noble Brigand, Watchtower, Farming Village, Spice Merchant

I opened 5/2 gaining Recruiter/nothing

Wife opened 3/4 gaining Watchtower, Spice Merchant

This was a slow moving game where neither of us played optimally. We ended up ending the game on 3-piles with Margraves, Curses and Recruiters running out. Both of us played Recruiters early for the Attack gaining ability, especially going after the Margraves and then buying Farming Villages. Toward mid-game the Recruiters started flinging the curses out and the pile was empty in about 4 turns. My wife had some cool hands were she Upgraded a Recruiter into a Grand Market with a Watchtower in hand and then drew the Grand Market with a Farming Village or Margrave. But I ended up winning 14 to -1 after grabbing a few Provinces and then rushing the last Margrave and Recruiter... with Recruiters.

Second game cards: Recruiter, Fool's Gold, Cartographer, Hamlet, Tunnel, Inn, Secret Chamber, Envoy, Wishing Well.

I opened 3/4 and bought Fool's Gold/Envoy going the Big Money route with Fool's Gold.
My wife opened 5/2 and bought Cartographer/Hamlet and went the Tunnel route. She also ended up getting a 1 Recruiter turn 5 using it exclusively for Cursing. That ended up really hindering my Envoys. She also had some cool synergy with Cartographer and Envoy while she had some WIFOM--too much forum Mafia!--with Envoy and Fool's Gold. She ended up winning pretty solidly as my deck sputtered with too much green and curses.

This card was a bit difficult to play and neither of us played it optimally the first game. We recruited to many Recruiters which then were basically coppers that filled your deck with more attack cards. But we were able to get a few great hands with Farming Village/Margraves and Recruiters for high $ amounts and giving out ~2 curses. On its own, it wasn't as passable as I thought it might be. Curses still hurt, even if you have to pay $5 for a card that isn't as good of a curser as a $4 Sea Hag.

Goko Dominion Online / Google + Walled Village
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:10:47 pm »
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but I just went to the Dominion Store and found this out:

Quote
This card (Walled Village) can only be purchased if you are logged into Goko using your Google + credentials.

Can I just say that this is just plain stupid!

BGG Store Tournament / BGG Store Tournament Bracket - Round 2
« on: August 27, 2012, 11:23:24 pm »
Bracket is here

Post results here!

Round one is complete. If you haven't done so contact your opponent and let's see if we can finish by Sept 3. But the official deadline for round 2 will be Sept. 5 at noon forum time, one week from now. Let me know if you have trouble getting ahold of your opponent.

BGG Store Tournament / BGG Store Tournament Bracket - Round 1
« on: August 24, 2012, 10:15:58 am »
So I don't know what kind of a time frame we are looking at. Has anyone heard if Sept. 14 was officially announced in the Goko video?

I don't want to rush through this tournament if we don't have to, but if necessary I think we should rather than have to wait on Goko to finish.

As such there will be two deadlines: the official on, and the ideal one. The official round deadlines will be one week long. Friday - Friday (noon - noon forum times)

However, if people could try to aim for a more condensed schedule that would be even more ideal, but with schedules and such that may be difficult.

If possible, please try to abide by this schedule (always noon forum time):
Round 1 August 24 - August 28
Round 2 August 28 - Sept 1
Round 3 Sept 1 - Sept 5
Round 4 Sept 5 - Sept 9
Round 5 Sept 9 - Sept 14

The bracket can be found here

Rules for the tournament can be found here

Some reminders:
1. as of this post you have two days to contact your opponent. If you don't, you forfeit your spot and it may be occupied by another contestant that can play at a time appointed by the original opponent.

2. Isotropic Point Trackers on, Same starting hands on, veto mode off and the google extension was voted to be off--just don't use it!

3. This is single elimination. All rounds are best out of 5. In the event of a tie (2-2-1) another game may be played as necessary. So mostly it is the first to 3 wins, but if a player wins 2 and ties 2 games out of 4 that is considered a win.

4. The winner of the tournament will win a promo card package from the Board Game Geek Store. Go visit them and see what they offer. Kristine is awesome!

5. Post results here!

6. The moderator has never done this before. Feel free to offer suggestions and ask questions!

Mafia Ruleset (blatantly stolen from Axxle via his mafiascum game)

Game Rules:

General Gameplay and Etiquette:
1. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind. Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it. Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage.
3. If you have a role with a Night action your choices are due to me by the posted deadline. If I do not receive your choice via PM by the posted deadline you will forfeit your actions. In case of multiple submissions, the last valid one before the deadline will be used.
4. Roles with Night actions will not be able to submit an action on Night 0 (i.e. during the confirmation stage).
5. Any player with a Night action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mod know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.
6. As a general rule you should aim for one post every 48 hours, minimum, to keep the game moving.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:
1. A simple majority (rounded up) of all living members must agree on one person for a lynch to occur prior to deadline.
2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate. Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName. Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold! Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. This game will have 1 week day deadlines. If a player or No Lynch does not have a simple majority at deadline, no lynch will occur, and the game will go into night. Night deadlines will be 2 days.
8. Once you are killed (either via lynch or night kill) you may no longer post. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent.
9. Do not edit or delete posts. We don't want some players having more information than others.  If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:
1. Bold, blue text is reserved for the Mod. No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mod privately. Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mod may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.
5. Prods of missing players will be issued automatically after 72 hours of no activity or upon request after 48 hours of no activity. A prodded player has 48 hours to respond or risks replacement. A player who has been prodded 3 times is subject to replacement without further notice.
6. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill.
7. If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
8. A quicktopic link will be provided and dead players will be able to gather there after being killed unless the is a serious objection to this by a player. Any objections can be made to me in a PM.
9. In the event of a dropout, players may be asked to act as replacements. These players will be given the dropped player's role and PM. If killed players have access to the quicktopic, other quicktopic viewers will be ineligible to be a replacement.
10. If you have any suggestions or comments on this setup feel free to either post here or PM me.
11. All times will in forum time.
12. This game will have 7-day days and 2-day nights with exceptions made to prevent days ending on weekends and to start early once all night actions are received.

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game.

Game Setup
Game Setup information:

We will be using the basic 2 of 4 setup.

The setup is
1 Mafia rolecop - investigates town roles
1 Mafia goon
5 townies
A random 2 of:
1 Cop - investigates target's alignment
1 Doctor - prevents target from being night killed
1 Jailkeeper - target can't perform night actions nor be killed
1 Townie

I am not including PMs. Each has their own flavor, any background or non-role/alignment information is for fun and has no relevant bearing on the game. I will share the PMs at the end of the game if desired by the community.

TO CLARIFY, I AM NOT A MODERATOR OF F.DS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.  IN THE CONTEXT OF THIS GAME, I AM MODERATING THAT THE RULES ARE FOLLOWED AND HIDDEN ACTIONS ARE COMPLETED PROPERLY.

Mini-Set Design Contest / Declining Village/Chervil
« on: August 07, 2012, 04:56:02 pm »
#5 - Declining Village by yuma with 16 points (Chervil)
$5 - Action
If played for the first time this turn: +2 Cards, +2 actions, +$1.
All other plays: +$1, +2 Actions.

I have noticed that two promo cards were inspired from other board games (walled village=carcassone, governor=puerto rico). As such I thought I might try to create one based off another favorite board game, Small World.

As such I tried to create a card that became worse when played in multiple. As pointed out this essentially becomes a reverse village. The first play is essentially the doubled powered city (only minus the +buy)--which in hindsight may have been too powerful. Whereas the later plays would be worse than Fishing Village as the +1 action/1$ wouldn't show up on the next turn.

BGG Store Tournament / BGG Store Dominion Tournament
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:22:22 am »
I am pleased to announce what I think is fDS's first sponsored tournament.

As such, the winner of this tournament will receive a prize from Kristine Anderson at Board Game Geek and the Board Game Geek Store. and  The prize will be a "care" package of Dominion promo cards.  I personally have used the BGG Store to buy promos and was extremely pleased with the price, the shipping and the customer service received.

This competition will begin the day after IsoDom 5 ends. Note that this is not the sign up page. Sign-ups will be posted later this week. This tournament will have a hard cap but I am not sure what cap that will be, and will be single elimination.

Rules

1. The winner of this tournament will receive a prize from the Board Game Geek Store.
2. Single elimination tournament. All rounds are best out of 5. Seeds will be determined by mafia wins and isotropic rank.
3. There will be a hard cap on this tournament that will be determined later. I want to avoid having first round byes, so it will likely be a set cap of 32, 64, 128, etc. This means sign up early!
4. Only forum members with a registration date prior to this post will be eligible to enter. Sorry if you are a lurker and want to enter. Maybe you should create an account now for a chance to compete next time (if there is a next time). Priority will be given on a mix of first come first serve basis, prior fDS tournament participation, isotropic rank and forum participation.
5. Players will play with randomized kingdoms using isotropic's nifty feature. That means no set kingdoms or required cards. Players will play with veto mode off, official point tracker on, and identical starting hands on. The use of the point counter plug-in will be voted on by the # of participants in PMs to me prior to the start of the tournament. Participants that do not care can simply not PM me, and anyone that doesn't PM me will be considered as such. After that decision is reached it is not allowed, even if both players want it. Obviously I can't monitor this, so I guess if you both want to use it I have no way of knowing... O well.
6. This tournament will have 7-day rounds. In the first round both players have two (2) days to contact each other after the official start day. If no contact is established with a player, the non-showing player will forfeit their spot. This spot will then be filled by a new player (again first come first serve) who can play in a time slot determined beforehand by the original opponent.
6b. In subsequent rounds, players again have two days to contact each other to determine a time to play. If in any round a consensus on when to play can't be reach then (further rules to come here).
7. After the first round any complete no shows will result in a forfeit for the non-showing player and a victory for the winning player. Not showing for 30 minutes after a designated time is grounds for a forfeit. Please save all PMs and use a screen shot of the lobby (secret chamber everyone!) with a timestamp to verify.
8. Wins will be recorded by posting logs--as is the usual format for fDS tournaments--commentary on these logs is encouraged but not required.
9. If isotropic shuts down in the midst of this tournament there will be a hiatus and the tournament will start two weeks after the fun-socket game is made available to the public. If participants choose not to become Goko members they will be disqualified from the tournament and their respective opponent will advance instead. (Of course all of this is slightly subject to change as we learn more about FunSockets, especially in regard to how cards will be available within Goko).
9b. If for some reason isotropic is unavailable due to computer issues using Goko instead is permitted if both players are Goko beta testing members. In this case please copy the log into a pm as well as posting it. I am not sure if Goko saves old logs in the same way isotropic does. If one player is on Goko, but the other is not the game must be rescheduled on isotropic.
10. If the winner of the tournament decides to not accept the prize and only wants the bragging rights then the prize will go to the second place participant. If the 2nd place participant does not accept it the prize it will go to 3rd place and so forth.
11. The prize is only available to participants living in the United States. Players living outside are allowed to play in the tournament but cannot receive the prize. (However, if non-US residents are willing to pay shipping and handling for the prize, there may be an exception made to this rule but I need to check before I promise anything).
12. The ultimate winner of the prize will need to send me a mailing address which I will forward onto Kristine who will mail the prize.

This thread is intended to announce the tournament and be open for suggestions, comments or questions.

Please visit the BGG Store and see if they have any products of interest to you.

Forum Games / Losers Only Mafia
« on: July 28, 2012, 10:03:06 pm »
I am thinking of starting a losers only Mafia game.  For losers like me who can't seem to win a game...

Only new players or players w/o a win (I guess we could let jot in as well since he is only 1/4).

Is there any interest in this? Any outrage from Galz/Robz/etc?

This is unfortunate but just the way it goes. I won't be able to check everyone's stats, but if you want to make sure your stats are correct, feel free to double check them and let me know if there are errors and what they should be.

Dominion General Discussion / My New Dominion Goal
« on: June 18, 2012, 05:59:28 pm »
I--like many other Dominion players--over buy Fishing Village. It is such a simple little card that it just sneaks into my deck every time it is on the board. But it isn't always the correct choice. Currently I buy it 91% of the time according to Council Room and when I do buy it I buy about 4 of them.

My goal is to get my Fishing Village % to drop to about 80% of all games. That seems perhaps still a little high, but probably about where I would want it to be.

What do you guys think? This isn't an attempt to not use Fishing Village when I should be, but instead a reminder that I need to think whether I actually need them or if there is a better way to accomplish my goal. What % do you think is ideal?

Dominion General Discussion / Zark Games
« on: May 05, 2012, 06:30:40 pm »
Has anyone had any experience with the website www.zarkgames.com?

It appears he is willing to sell individual cards from sets (individual meaning 11 cards of the same type, one with the blue backing). I assume he does this by buying complete sets and then takes them apart and sells them piecemeal at a higher price. He sells an individual 11 cards for $3.

I am somewhat interested in this because while I love both Seaside and Prosperity my wife isn't super interested in 1. duration cards, 2. cards that have mats, 3. cards that have VP chips. As a result we won't be buying either of the two sets but would be interested in getting cards like Montebank, Bank, Hoard, Ambassador, Warehouse, Grand Market, etc.

Does Donald or Rio Games have a policy or anything of such about buying individual cards--I believe they don't offer it themselves. Furthermore, I respect Donald and Rio Games enough to not buy individual cards if they prefer buyers to buy whole sets instead.

I guess my main 2 questions are:

1. has anyone bought from zarkgames before?

2. will I feel like like a scumbag for buying individual cards?

Introductions / {Creative Introduction Pending}
« on: May 04, 2012, 08:20:09 pm »
Hi:

Now that finals are over I can finally breathe and introduce myself.

I have been playing Dominion since a nice sales clerk at Game Night Games in Salt Lake City introduced it to me December 2010. I bought it for my family at Christmas and was hooked. I now own Intrigue, Hinterlands and Cornucopia.

Favorite Cards: Salvager, Remake, Trader (I really like trashers), Silk Road and Duke
Least Favorite Cards: King's Court, Treasure Map, Smugglers

I am studying to be a Medical Laboratory Scientists (no more classes left, only rotations to go!), live in Salt Lake City, have been married for 1 year and a couple of months, love to hike, read (Dostoevsky, Daniel Quinn, Joseph Heller, Jack Kerouac and J.D. Salinger being my favorite authors), and follow Major League Soccer (that is futbol for you eurosnobs  :P ) and cheer for Real Salt Lake.

I don't play too many other games beside Dominion--I own Carcassone, Pandemic, Ticket to Ride and Bang!, but don't play them nearly as often.

Thanks to theory for the forum and all of you for participating.

Council Room Feedback / Useful use of Councilroom data?
« on: May 04, 2012, 07:50:23 pm »
I had a thought about using Councilroom data for game predictions and wonder if it has any useful application, as I write this I am not sure if it does but am simply putting the thought out there.

For example, if I wanted to predict who would win the last annotated game on theory's blog between him and Captain Frisk could I use councilroom data?  Here is what I mean:

In that game the following cards were used and here are theory's and Captain_Frisk's councilroom stats for each card, the stat I am using is the "win rate given availability" stat:

                        theory              captain_frisk
Scrying Pool       1.25 (.20)           1.21 (.12)
Scheme             1.06 (.33)           1.29 (.14)
Warehouse         1.26 (.11)           1.37 (.09)
Apprentice          1.08 (.25)           1.33 (.10)
Harvest             1.15  (.20)          1.29 (.12)
Ambassador       1.29 (.14)           1.36 (.09)
Tunnel               .91 (.42)            1.21 (.15)
Conspirator        1.11 (.12)           1.33 (.09)
Counting House   1.17 (.12)           1.29 (.09)
Bank                 1.22 (.12)           1.32 (.09)

average             1.15                  1.30

As a result I would pick Captain_Frisk to win the game, which he did 55-36.

Here is another example with me against tlloyd in the most recent IsoDom tournament:

                             tlloyd                yuma
Baron                 1.28 ± 0.12         1.30 ± 0.16
Conspirator         1.10 ± 0.13         1.42 ± 0.15
Expand              1.17 ± 0.12          1.35 ± 0.17
Fortune Teller     1.15 ± 0.14          1.08 ± 0.16
Goons                1.22 ± 0.12         1.17 ± 0.20
Grand Market      1.15 ± 0.12         1.12 ± 0.18
Mountebank        1.14 ± 0.13         1.11 ± 0.19
Quarry               1.11 ± 0.13         1.18 ± 0.16
Royal Seal         1.15 ± 0.13          1.23 ± 0.17
Walled Village     1.10 ± 0.15         1.25 ± 0.17

 average           1.157                   1.221

So if I used this as a predictor I would suggest I would win, but I lost this game 59-44, so obviously it isn't a perfect predictor, but no predictor is.

I guess what I am asking is since stats isn't my best subject in the world does this method have any application? If so is there anyway to make it a less time consuming venture, putting these two games took me about 10 minutes in copying and pasting and such (I really need to get a mouse for my laptop).

If there is no useful application is there anyway to make something useful out of it? If no to both of those questions then feel free to ignore.

Rules Questions / Stewarding/Remaking Treasure Maps
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:55:03 pm »
Rules question for everyone

Can you activate Treasure Maps by trashing two of them with remake or steward? Came across this when playing irl tonight and was wondering. We thought yes, seeing that the card does not specify when it has to occur, although I did argue that for that to apply it would have to be labeled a reaction card?

I can't think of a situation where this would benefit with Steward but with Remake could be very useful trashing two T. Maps into the 4 Golds and two $5 cards.

I checked and isotropic does not give the effect when trashing with Steward.

Help! / Nobles beats Wharf?
« on: March 09, 2012, 10:08:01 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201203/09/game-20120309-070112-b25e4559.html

So I played this game with City, Embargo, Herbalist, Laboratory, Nobles, Spice Merchant, Tribute, Warehouse, Wharf, and Workshop just barely and lost.  I opened Silver/Silver since Silver/Spice Merchant constantly keeps me from getting to $5 early and I wanted Wharfs. I thought I was in a good spot when I had 2 Wharfs to my opponents none and then I embargoed them.  He went on to go for Nobles.  I think I made a mistake and should have bought gold earlier instead of following him for Nobles. But once I got two golds I decided to buy out the Nobles to keep him from getting a substantial lead there--so we both had 4 Nobles.

Cities were activated, but we were both in greening mode by that time. He bought 1 to my 0. The only other key differences between our decks were his 1 Warehouse and 1 Spice Merchant--I bought one late after realizing I was somehow behind!

What went wrong? Why weren't my Wharfs as powerful as I thought they should have been?  Was embargoing them a mistake? Should I have completely ignored Nobles and bought more Golds--that is my immediate thought at least.  So many questions...

Variants and Fan Cards / Card Idea: Trash Collector
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:55:03 pm »
Trash Collector
$5

Choose one: trash three differently named cards, if you do gain a gold; draw (5-10?) cards from your pile, if you draw a curse then trash it and replace it with a gold. Only one curse may be trashed this way. Reshuffle the drawn cards and place them back on top of the deck.

One of my favorite cards in Hinterlands of late is Trader because of its ability to make me rethink--and hopefully my opponents rethink--buying cursing attacks--especially mountebank.

As a result I wanted to create another card that would have that same effect but not be a reaction card.
My thought was to find a way to turn curses into Golds--because that would be a severe way to stop curses from being dealt out. But I wanted the card to still be useful in non-cursing games. Hence the other option. I chose having three differently named cards so that it couldn't be used on estate, copper, copper early on. It requires another card--a silver, or a 2$ card, or ideally a curse in hand to use.

However, I am unsure about how many cards is appropriate to draw 5, 10?

Any thoughts, I haven't play tested.

Dominion General Discussion / Shuffle Definition
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:42:52 pm »
Hey all:

Came across a question playing in real life last night with some friends. In one of the games we noticed that a friend had some unusual discard and shuffle patterns.  I noticed once when he had played a witch and on that turn bought a second witch. After this was completed he put the used witch on top of his discard pile and his bought witch on the bottom of the discard pile. When I asked him why, he said so that after he shuffled the two witches would be less likely to collide since one would be shuffled into the top half and the other into the bottom half--this was a game without any +action villages.

This led to me being a little skeptical of the ethics of doing so and led to further questions about our group's shuffling. One person for instance doesn't shuffle but instead twice does this: puts 1 card ontop of another, next on the bottom, the next on the top, the next on the bottom-- "to get a greater separation of cards that were used at the same time," in her words.

For people that have played in real life tournaments how has shuffling worked? How many shuffles are required? It does not appear that the rulebook has anything to say other than shuffling must occur.

My friends and I resolved to let each player shuffle their own way since we were just playing for fun, but I wanted to know what this community thought.

Help! / Scrying Pool and Apothecary
« on: February 21, 2012, 11:12:43 pm »
Can anyone direct me to some commentary on how to play both of these cards, together or independently. Any game logs of ideal play or an article of some sort would be great. I've searched in here and couldn't quite find what I was looking for in way of advice. These are two cards I struggle a lot in playing correctly. They both look like fun, powerful cards, but I consistently misplay them.

Thanks
