okie dokie artichokie, we're gonna close it out since i haven't heard from faust yet. DMing yall your judging assignments - Reminder you DO NOT NEED TO provide actual feedback, just which pair gets gold, which gets silver, which gets copper. You can - I'll put it in the finale post, along with a link to the spreadsheet - but you don't have to.

Points will be awarded according to the first post in the thread, with one exception for mathdude whose artifact was not used, he'll be getting some consolation points (as though he'd ranked silver for each of his 3 judges).

Here is the card / state|artifact compendium, all in one place:

scolapasta's Philanthropist + Erick648's Generous

venus ambassador's Wraith + Timinou's Blinded

Timinou's Pirate's Cove + spineflu's Sunken Treasure

mathdude's Architect + mxdata's Prepared

Mahowrath's Pioneers + emtzalex's Expansionist

VioletCLM's Bewilderbeest + faust's Confused

emtzalex's Industrious Witch + LibraryAdventurer's Hidden Pocket

mxdata's Troll + Mahowrath's amulet of protection

Erick648's Strange Little Men + VioletCLM's Forbidden

LibraryAdventurer's Clever Planner + venus ambassador's Shortsighted

Augie279's Construction Site + Xen3k's Concussed

Xen3k's Fixer + scolapasta's Caught In The Act

spineflu's Pensioner + Augie279's Cure

Thanks for the great feedback everyone!

1. I wonder what color it should be then. Is there a standard color for this?

Maybe just use the Shelters color? There isn't a single-color thing in red yet.

wdc 139

Is a non-Supply card gained by a normal Action card acceptable?

if the non-supply card can get into play and isn't a action/treasure/night, yes

cards like Courtier aren't expecting zero types.

Why couldn't Courtier work with a card with zero types? If I discard no Victory cards with Shepherd, I get +0 Cards. Why would choose zero lead to undefined behavior?

It's not that it couldn't, it's that it shouldn't. Existing cards have been designed with the assumption of a minimum of one type, typically in range [1..4]. This is a good convention to keep, and making a $5 card dud is one unfun reason for keeping the convention.

But also I bring it up because it has a chance of rearing its head in this contest; if you think I'm off base on this, feel free to design a zero-typed card to prove me wrong. Like I said, I'm not DQing anything this contest.

Weekly Design Contest / Weekly Design Contest #139: Highly Irregular
« on: December 30, 2021, 04:03:54 pm »
WDC 139 is:
Design a card that is not an Action, Treasure, or Night card, yet can still be brought into play.

For this contest, we'll work with the de facto rule of the following:
Quote
When something instructs you to play a card that's not an action, treasure, or night card, follow the instructions on the card like you would an action, treasure or night card, including when it would be cleaned up (for duration cards).

This may be an on-buy triggered card (like a self-contained innovation+hireling combo), maybe a pure reserve type, maybe a only via reaction does it get played, but it should have a way to get into play, and not be an Action, Treasure, or Night card. If it's solely an on-buy card, it should have some reason for not being an event.

If you need a "null type", or type that the card is when it has no real types, please either use Confusion or make up your own "dead" type; cards like Courtier aren't expecting zero types.

For this contest, I'm not going to rule out/DQ any cards - that was a bummer during contest 131 - but hopefully this gives some clear criteria on what you should be making.

Also for this contest, I'm going to request please no traveller lines, and please minimal fan mechanics. I get that this is easymode if it's a Dawn card or Supplier or something; the spirit of the card should be it gets into play in a weird way, not by following a rulebook, even if it's one you wrote.

Pioneer • $3 • Action - Reaction
Reveal cards from the top of your deck until you reveal a Treasure card, then put it in your hand and discard the rest. If it's your turn, +1 Action.
-
When something causes you to reveal this (using the word "reveal"), play it.

i designed this the other day then forgot to post it. A self-synergizing riff on Adventurer at much cheaper than adventurer, that does the fun thing I like about Venture.

Instead of saying "If it's your turn, +1 Action", the card can just start with "+1 Action", since on other people's turns it would not matter.

just seeing this now; it's phrased this way because it's shorter than the "(if it's not your turn, the +Actions does nothing)" reminder text from Caravan Guard.

Thanks for the win mxdata! I'll try to get the next contest up today.

33
i mean, ideally you'd wanna mitigate that before you'd ever have to be buying copper.
I'd say a good rule is, on a given pass through your deck, if you dud twice due to green/purple (not attacks or something), you should look to increase your economy.

Quote
Pensioner - $4 - Action - Attack
You may trash an Estate from your hand to gain a card costing up to $4.

You may trash a Copper from your hand to gain a Silver.

If you did both, take the Cure. Otherwise, each other player gains a Curse.
Quote
Cure - Artifact
At the start of your turn, you may trash a Curse from your hand to gain a Copper and an Estate to your hand.

Allies Prediction: Just as Menagerie had Snowy Village (and Sleigh), Allies will have  Present. The game will come with a 10-sided die to make that card work

could lower the component mfg cost by making it gain $0-5 and using a d6

Question: Are States inherently limited to one per player at any given time?  E.g., if there's a card that says "Take [X] state", would it automatically fail if you already have the State, or could you take a 2nd copy of that State, assuming there's one available?

unclear. We've only got a couple states as-is, so canonwise there's not a ton to go off of. I think for simplicity's sake, having a default rule be "you can't stack multiple of the same state" is fine.

I'll point out that of the official states, you can only get Deluded/Envious "if you don't have Deluded or Envious.'

right but i think this is an artifact of paper play, where deluded is on the reverse of envious, to get around the question "how do we, in a six player game where everyone has Deluded, take Envious"

1) Between NOW and 12/24, design a state or artifact for this.
2) On 12/24, I'll randomly assign one of the entered artifacts or states to someone else that entered one (ensuring no-one gets their own). That person designs a kingdom card that uses the state/artifact by 12/31

To clarify, should we post our Artifact/State submission here, or DM them to you?
Post the Artifact/State (and, in a week, also the kingdom card) in this thread. Only the judging should get DM'd to me.

• Artifacts should be anything with a tug-of-war element (so, lost in the woods would be an artifact for this contest); states should be along the lines of Envious or Deluded, where a player

Are you saying that for a State there should be a copy for each player?
yes, like is the case with Envious, Deluded, Miserable, and Twice Miserable. They don't have to be (and probably shouldn't be, without a good reason) double-sided though. Also yeah i definitely stopped in the middle of a sen

Since forum participation drops when people have off of work for holidays + such, it makes more sense to do a "just for funzies" one-off contest.

Here's how it's going to work:
1) Between NOW and 12/24, design a state or artifact for this. [this phase is done]
2) On 12/24, I'll randomly assign one of the entered artifacts or states to someone else that entered one (ensuring no-one gets their own). That person designs a kingdom card that uses the state/artifact by 12/31. state/artifact assignments are here
🡆3) On 12/31, I'll give each person who has entered three cards (with their states or artifacts) that they had no design input on. Each person ranks their assigned judging cards with gold/silver/copper (and provides input if they want) back to me via DM by 1/7, I toss all of that in a spreadsheet, and google sheets tells me who the winner is.

Here's the nuts, bolts, and minutia:
• Please enter if you're ok with participating in all three legs of the contest
• Artifacts/States that refer to a card (like Border Guard's artifacts) - feel free to say "when you play X, instead do <your effect here>"
• Artifacts should be anything with a tug-of-war element (so, lost in the woods would be an artifact for this contest); states should be along the lines of Envious or Deluded, where theres one for each player
• Artifacts and states should probably be an under $3 or flat-out-undesirable effect. For example, Lost In The Woods stops your Fools from working - an undesirable effect. The Key, that's a pretty decent effect, probably worth $2 or $3. Use your best judgement, don't make an "i win".
• The Kingdom card - and let's keep them all kingdom cards, please, no landscapes or out-of-supply cards - that gives out the artifact or state should be just a Kingdom card, not a traveller line, not a split pile, not a castles or knights type pile.
• When designing a kingdom card, if you have to change around some of the text on the Artifact/State to make it work, that's fine; please try to keep the overall intent of the Artifact/State the same though.
• The scoring for Gold / Silver / Copper will give points to the Kingdom card designer and the Artifact designer. Points are as follows:
RankPoints for card designerPoints for artifact/state designer
Gold86
Silver53
Copper20
• This is for fun. Please be light with your critiques.

I'm going to be entering, but if someone doesn't complete a leg of this, i'll forfeit my spot so the rest of yall can still participate.

DATES AND DEADLINES:
12/23 - 24 hour notice on artifacts/states
12/24 - Closing entry on artifacts/states, I'll DM everyone which artifact/state they'll be designing a card to go with
12/30 - 24 hour notice on kingdom cards
12/31 - Closing entry on kingdom cards, I'll DM everyone which THREE kingdom cards with artifacts they'll be ranking.
1/6 - 24 hour notice on judging. Please note that judging happens via DM to me (i'll post any commentary you want to add for individual cards/artifacts/states)
1/7 - I'll post results and crown the Solstice Sovereign. You'll have bragging rights until next year.

I believe we do need a minimum of 5 people for this to work but I think we can hit that no problem, right?

Good luck, and have a happy and safe holiday season.

Oh and shoutout to emtzalex for coming up with the design of this contest over in the WDC ideas thread.

If any other player has the same number of Leylines as you, worth 0%. Otherwise worth 2%.

What if Crossroads rewarded card counting harder?

This is funny in that if you and the other player in a 2-player game have the same number of Leylines, then it doesn't really matter whether they're worth VP or not. They'd cancel each other out anyway. So the bottom only matters in a game with more players, or maybe with specific other card interactions.
Yeah it's a fun little interaction that adds to the multiplayer experience, i think.

Google says that "dienst" means "shift". So some cards give you a new thing called "shifts" or some other more appropriate English word. These things have less value than a , as seen by the cantrip only costing .
pretty sure that's an idiomatic translation of 'Favor'.

edit: reddit delivers:
Quote
- Allies are special cards not in the supply
- Allies have actions that can be bought with 'service' tokens
- Other kingdom cards give these 'service' tokens
- 250 kingdom cards, 23 Allies,

- Royal Galley: +1 card, you may play a card from your hand. Put it aside; if you did, play it at the start of your next turn.
- Specialist: You may play an action or money card from you hand. Choice one of the following: Play the card again; or take one copy of it from the supply.
- Subordinate: +1 card, +1 action, +1 favor (I think those are the new tokens, like coffers)
- Woodworker: No empty supply piles: +1 action and take a card worth max 4. Else: thrash a card from your hand and take a card costing max 2 more.
- Contract: 2 money, +1 favor, you may set aside one card from your hand and play it at the start of your next turn.
- Art museum: +3, this turn: if you take a card costing 3 or 4 more (more than what? i don't quite get) then +1 buy
- Importer: At the start of your next turn: take a card costing max 5. Preperation: every player gets +4 favors
- Marquis: +1 buy, +1 card per card in your hand. Then discard down to 10 cards in your hand.
- Barbarian: +2 money, Every player thrashes the top card of their deck. If it costs 3 or more than the player takes a cards costing less. But it has to share a type with the thrashed card otherwise they take a curse.
- christmas ball?: choice 2 different options: +1 buy; +1 money; +1 favor. If you take a card this turn, then you may put it on top of your draw pile
- city state: If you take an action card during your turn, then you may pay 2 favors to play it.
- Gang of pickpockets: At the start of your turn discard down to 4 cards unless you pay 1 favor.
- Astrology order: When shuffling your discard pile you may pay 1 favor per card and put those on top of your draw pile
- Costal harbour: When discarding cards in cleanup you may pay 1 favor per card to keep those for your next turn. Still draw 5 new cards.
- Bankers' association: +1 money per 4 favor you own. Rounded down
[ sic ] on that whole quote, i'm sure there's a closer translation to en.dominionese that exists.

Weekly Design Contest / Re: Weekly Design Contest #136: ‘Tis the Season
« on: December 06, 2021, 09:29:12 am »

It's a cool idea and very thematic, but I'm not sure it would work well.  The first few Carols are little more than junk, and most of  the bonuses give your opponent(s) exactly the same bonus as yourself.  Four Calling Birds would often benefit yourself more than your opponents - as it's at the end of your turn, you're more likely to have junk that you want to trash in your hand (unless you had no draw at all), and Five Golden Rings and Eight Maids A-Milking could easily run out those respective piles before the last player in multiplayer - indeed, even if there's no other cards that gain Spoils, in games with 4 players, one will gain nothing from Five Golden Rings (since there are exactly 15 Spoils) and even with no other Horse gaining, player 4 would only get 6 Horses from Eight Maids A-Milking - and if there are other cards that can gain Spoils or Horses, then you may well run out even before that. I'd suggest changing their on-gain bonuses to ensure that the one who gains the cards gets a bigger bonus, and perhaps making it so that one or two of the Carols have a value that depends on how many other Carols you have, similar to Humble Castle and King's Castle counting Castles

I totally forgot Spoils was a 15 card supply since I used it for a custom set awhile back and upped it to 30 to match Horse pile, that is totally just my mistake. I am unsure how to word this effect to deal out uneven gains. What I want is in a four player game: the Spoils lets say has 14 Spoils and a gain 5 trigger is created by player 2(p2). I want p2 to get 4 spoils, p3 to get 4 spoils, p4 to get 3 spoils, then p1 to get 3 spoils. Any suggestions on how to make that happen?

I thought about doing the VP not static like "Two Turtle Doves gives Worth 2% per Carol you have worth more than this." But thought it added a lot complexity to an already wordy pile.

Also as far are these worth buying they are hyper efficient green cards like 5VP for $5 is much better then Duchy and to compensated how broken these are I add the gifts which probably help others more then you, on purpose, since others get to use them before you. Also it is a present, you are not supposed to be the one who enjoys it the most.

with the upcoming change on coffers rules, you may want to rethink the pipers reward also - it'll just about guarantee that if someone can hit twelve dollarydoos, they empty the pile. that's a single turn 23pt swing, which normally takes $32 (4 provinces) and a self-curse.
