It’s going to be challenging to not say “This is the way” when playing a Bounty Hunter.

With Inheritance, should Estates gain the Command type as well as the Action type? I’m thinking that would make it more consistent with the other Commands.

One case I’ve thought of where it could matter (no clue if there might be more cases) is if the Inherited card’s pile—say, Conspirator—has emptied, but Estates have not. In that scenario, other Commands could still play a Conspirator by first playing an Estate from the Supply. For most Inherited cards there’s no real benefit, but this allows you to draw a starting hand of four Coppers and one BoM, and still get the +1 Card/+1 Action from Conspirator.

I finished up the current season of Better Call Saul. Wow, Michael's story at the end was a goddamn punch to the face. Really well done. Now I regret removing it from my DVR because I think it may be worthwhile to compare that scene to the scene in Breaking Bad where Walter is pleading for his life and is placed on the phone to Jesse. And while there's an inclination to root for Michael to let Werner go, you know that he won't because you know his role in Breaking Bad.

I felt that early on they played up Kai being the problem a bit too much; I was never convinced he was going to cause any real trouble. Still, l definitely didn't anticipate things with Werner going the way they did. Werner's phone call reminded me of a different Breaking Bad phone call scene--Walt's call to Skyler at the end of Ozymandias. I would be interested to watch it to compare with the scene you're talking about too.

And Jimmy's story was good too. You got to see how he's willing to use his brother's memory to get what he wants, and Kim is seeing that dark side of him. You know that Kim leaves the picture at some point since she's not in Breaking Bad, and it seems likely to be the result of greatly disagreeing with Jimmy's ethics. I originally thought she'd get too wrapped up in his schemes and take a huge fall for it, but this finale looks to me like she's more likely to get sick of his shit.

As I saw in some Reddit discussion, Kim's not necessarily out of Jimmy's life during Breaking Bad. Jimmy/Saul is only shown there as far as he is relevant to Walt and Jesse, so it's not totally unreasonable that Kim could still be in his life. It was heartbreaking to see her realize she had been taken in by Jimmy's charade the same way the bar was.

I continue to love this show and think it's great, but I was really disappointed by how little Jimmy and Mike interacted this season. It almost felt like two different shows stitched together.

In a sense, it's a blessing and curse that Better Call Saul is a prequel to Breaking Bad. There are some characters you know are invincible, so you have some spoilers there, yet it doesn't diminish the tension because part of the thrill is watching how those characters get to where they are.

There's great potential for a prequel to fail to live up to the source material (*cough* Star Wars, not including Rogue One), but Better Call Saul is handling this masterfully.

Still looking forward to seeing what exactly Jimmy and Nacho get up to that Saul thought could get him killed in Breaking Bad. Maybe it's still too early for that to happen--are we down to like 4 years before the start of Breaking Bad?--but right now the only idea I've got is getting rid of Lalo. Given his apparent position in the Salamanca family and absence from Breaking Bad, there's no way he survives all of Better Call Saul.

Edit: completely forgot that Saul references Lalo in that BB scene, guess he will be around for a while.

FWIW v4.1 of Jeebus's Complete Rules for Dominion and All Its Expansions is 85 pages long. I'm pretty sure it details just about every class of card interaction that has potential for confusion.

A few weeks ago, I led the teach for a livestream play-through of Power Grid on the Heavy Cardboard YouTube channel, and this week I was a guest host on episode 120 of the Heavy Cardboard podcast for a review of Power Grid.

Let me know what you think! And don't worry, [play-through spoilers] my wife and I are quite aware we screwed up a few times in the power plant auctions ;D

Scrying Pool: Always leave cards previously placed on top on top when revealed again.

Also Scrying Pool: For your own cards, (1) always keep Actions and (2) always discard non-Actions. Probably would need two different settings, as there are a lot more cases where (2) applies than (1).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: To Those Who Deny Undo Steps Online
« on: April 28, 2018, 01:47:10 pm »
I don’t get this at all personally. I would see allowing an undo as being very gracious and sportsman-like, but to a degree above what I think should be minimally expected of people. I think someone is fully within their rights to deny an undo, and that such an act is not poor sportsmanship or rude; it is simply a lack of excessively good sportsmanship.
Well, not that I expect other people to grant undos, but then I don't want to play with them.

On the subject: Sometimes things might just be misunderstandings. I just played someone who played an Avanto and requested undo afterwards. I denied, thinking they wanted to not play Avanto once he drew a hand of no Saunas, but they clarified that they just mistakenly clicked "End Actions" (which I don't think there is a way for me to realize?), so then I gave them the undo. Without the talking it might have been a case where both think the other was being a jerk.

I had a similar situation in a league match where based on the log, it looked like they wanted to undo a play of Hunting Party; after chatting clarified that wasn't what would be undone, I granted the request. It would be nice if we didn't have to chat just to figure that out though.

I started a new "Interface Issues" thread on the ShiT forums about this - http://forum.shuffleit.nl/index.php?topic=2925.0

For that kind of thing I'd probably use Wheaton's Law ("Don't be a dick."). If someone notices and asks, you should explain what you're doing, but if nobody notices/cares, then clearly it's not a big deal.

FWIW when I do things like that, I'll provide the pile count to everyone, or say I'm checking a rule about cards in my hand. I don't know that anyone's wanted to know the specific rule I'm checking in that case, but I tend to say what it was when we get to the part of the game where it matters.

There's a big difference between not making sure everyone is 100% aware of every detail of the game state, and intentionally hiding the things you did to affect the game state.

38
I was just looking at the poll and I saw that 5/4 is winning. Why does everybody like 5/4 so much? I also noticed that I'm the only one that voted for 7/2. Opening with a 7 card is really good.

There are only 4 kingdom cards, and not that many at . If you opened / on every Cursed Gold board, you'd spend a decent amount of those hands buying a er anyway, and you're a lot more likely to be locked out of other decent options on your second hand with than you are with .

I should probably switch my pic but... I love the Farmland so much... So I'm kinda torn

Farmland is weak. There‘s absolutely no reason to pick such a weak card as avatar.

I concur.

The earliest clear trashing flavor is "trashing is associated with religion and the church (for some reason)", which applies at least to Chapel, Bishop, Altar, Temple, and Monastery.

I think the reason for this is that you're giving away things to the church; Donate also fits that flavor.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Forced Wins Training Sessions
« on: January 31, 2018, 06:12:21 pm »
I'm having a difficult time making sense of the point totals.  My best guess is that your opponent has 5 Provinces, 20 Keep points, and is miserable; and you have one Province and 15 Keep points.  There are 5 treasures, which means that two of them are tied.  Your opponent leads in Spoils 4-0.  Your opponent has the only Silver.  You're tied in two of: Treasure Troves, Coppers, and Golds and are winning the other.  I'll assume you need to gain one of each to win all the Keep points.  With these assumptions, it's possible to win without drawing any more cards.

I'm also using these assumptions, but my solution went a different direction.

Play Stonemason; Gold (net: -1 Gold) --> Graverobber, Stonemason
Play City Quarter, drawing Province, "blank", Graverobber, Stonemason
Play Stonemason; Gold (net: -2 Gold) --> Graverobber, Graverobber
Play City Quarter, drawing Graverobber, Graverobber
Play Graverobber; Graverobber -> Province
Play Graverobber; Graverobber -> Province
Play 4 Foragers, trashing Wishing Well, Copper (net: -1 Copper), Forager, "Blank", for +$16, +4 Buys

Play 2 Golds, 2 Coppers, 2 Treasure Troves for +$12, gaining 2 Golds+Coppers (net: 0 Gold, +1 Copper)

$28, 5 Buys
pay off 3D
$25, 5 Buys

Buys:
Silver, Silver (net: +2)
Gold (net: +1)
Treasure Trove (net: +1)
Duchy

Now you have all the Keep points for Copper, Silver, Gold, Treasure Trove; net +5 VP for you, -15 VP for opponent

Final scores:
21 + 5 + 12 (Provinces) + 3 (Duchy) = 41
48 - 15 = 33

(Edit) Better solution (by which I mean higher score):

play Stonemason; Gold -> Graverobber, Treasure Trove (net treasures: Gold -1, Treasure Trove +1)
play City Quarter, drawing Province, "blank", Graverobber, Trove
play Graverobber; Graverobber -> Province
play 5 Foragers; trash "blank", Wishing Well, City Quarter, 2 Coppers, for +$20, +5 Buys (net Copper -2)
play 3 Gold, 1 Copper for +$10
play 3 Treasure Troves for +$6, gaining 3 Golds and Coppers (net: Gold +2, Treasure Trove +1, Copper +1)
$36, 6 Buys
pay 3D
$33, 6 Buys:
2 Silvers
1 Province
3 Duchies

same Keep swing as above solution, but 2 more Duchies:
21 + 5 + 12 + 9 = 47
48 - 15 = 33

final score: 47-33

Other Games / Re: Viticulture (and Tuscany)

Agricola is one of my favorites, and I’ve only played Tzolk’in a few times, but my wife and I liked it enough that we’re planning on buying it. Based on what you first said about worker placement, I’m not surprised to hear you hate it  ;D I haven’t played any of the others you mentioned.

I guess if we ever find ourselves gaming together IRL, we ought to stick to Dominion  :)

Other Games / Re: Viticulture (and Tuscany)
« on: January 29, 2018, 02:53:56 pm »
I really dislike Worker Placement games, but uh Viticulture is one of the least bad ones. I hate how in many Worker Placement games, your plans are constantly being foiled by others taking all the actions you wanted. It's just non-stop frustration.

Not a fan of Agricola, I take it? Non-stop pressure to feed your workers on top of standard WP frustration!  ;)

Quote
Viticulture mostly still lets you take the actions, it just rewards you for being the first to take an action. So that's an improvement.

I don't think I played with this Tuscany expansion thing. Does it add more interesting stuff?

EDIT: A bit of trivia: I actually bought these metal coins meant for Viticulture before I'd ever heard of the game. I got them to use as VP tokens for Empires playtesting, since I was sick of how similar in size and appearance the Prosperity 1-VP and 5-VP Victory tokens were. Then when Empires came out the 5-VP tokens were actually larger, so I switched to those.

In the video in the OP, we played Viticulture EE + Tuscany EE. The original Tuscany had like 12 expansion modules. Viticulture EE is basically Viticulture plus the smallest Tuscany modules that are worth playing with.

Tuscany EE includes the biggest 3 Tuscany modules that are good.

- Extended Board: instead of 2 seasons with 6 actions each, there are now 4 seasons with 4 actions each; some actions are moved around, and a few new interesting actions are added. The Wake-up chart also changes for the better.
- Structure deck: a deck of orange structure cards that can add permanent improvements to your winery.
- Special Workers: a deck of special worker cards defines a bunch of different unique powers for a worker--for example, the Builder: when you build a structure using this worker, pay $2 less; each game, choose 2 of these cards, and everyone uses their special male and female meeples, each corresponding to one of the special worker cards

After using the Tuscany EE modules (especially the extended board and special workers), I would never go back, except to teach players who are inexperienced/casual gamers. The teach I did in the video was intended to go from zero to full Viticulture+Tuscany EE, and I think people who play a lot of games should be able to pick it up alright.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Official Dominion Strategy Podcast
« on: January 22, 2018, 09:25:20 pm »
Haven't started listening yet, but I will soon, so I hope there are more episodes to come!

Why haven't I already been listening, and what is changing that? My answer to the first part is the same as many others'....

Is this available via standard podcast apps?

While normal videos should certainly aim to be short, the audience for podcasts typically wants something lengthy, as they listen to them during long commutes or work.

I agree, but then I think YouTube is a bad delivery service. Not everyone has mobile data or has WiFi on their commutes, so I think it's important that it's easy to be able to download the podcast and listen to it offline

It is easy to be able to download YouTube videos (or just the audio if you want that).

I did download the podcast to listen to it, but I shouldn't have to go to another site or use other software to make a podcast listenable for me. Also, if it's so easy, then my suggestion to make the podcast also available in a downloadable audio format should be easy for BA or Seprix to implement, too. And this isn't even considering the extra level of convenience that would come with integration into iTunes, Google Play, or other similar services. That might be a bit more difficult, though; I don't know.

I may have been too harsh on YouTube podcasts in my original comment, but I think it's a reasonable suggestion that they should consider multiple formats.

Yeah I think it's fine to have it primarily in video format, but if I can't get the audio via Overcast or whatever it's probably a no go for me. Otherwise I'm not really sure it's a podcast, which is fine, but then just call it a youtube channel.

I agree with this. There are several podcasts I listen to that are just the audio of a video show. While my preference is for podcasts that are designed to be audio-only, these audio-from-video versions are usually pretty good.

But yeah, if it's not somewhere my podcatcher will see it (in this case, the iOS Podcasts app and iTunes), there's less than a 1% chance I'll ever listen to it.

Have you guys made any more moves towards getting the podcast up on the iTunes store (where basically all podcast apps can get it from?) I love podcasts to listen to on commutes and in the lab off of my phone but I'm never going to sit in front of a computer and listen to an hour+ podcast on youtube.

This. As an avid podcast listener and sometimes Dominion player, I'm very much in the market for this, but not if I have to go on Youtube for it.

How come I cannot find it on iTunes or Overcast yet? I really want to listen to it!

This won't be a part of my life until i can play it in my car without using a web browser on my phone.  Has such a moment occured?  I'll install the nichest of apps.

I agree this needs to be a real podcast and on real podcast providers soon, there just needs to be a place to host mp3s and an RSS feed.

Today I had a great idea for a website I could build: you could enter a YouTube channel URL, and then the site would convert the channel feed into a podcast feed. Now, many of my ideas only go as far as a half-baked bit of code on my computer that takes hours to get up and running when I return to develop it further after the initial burst and I've forgotten how any of it works, and most of the rest of my ideas are things that actually already exist. Fortunately for all of us, this was the latter.

I found podsync.net, and got a URL for the podcast that I was able to load into the Apple Podcasts app with the "Add a Podcast by URL..." feature, so hopefully this works with Overcast and other podcast apps too.

https://podsync.net/k7oYrtcSS

The feed at this URL does consist of full videos--so mobile users may still want to take care to not use cellular data when downloading episodes via the podsync link--but playing only the audio with the screen off works just fine on my iPhone.

For those who want a shirt to represent their interest in Dominion, there will be two options starting on Friday (the URLs will not be available until then):
Shirt 1
Title: Dominion
Description: Dominion, ah what a glorious word. Nothing short of having it tattooed across your chest would adequately express your commitment, strength, and slightly exaggerated sense of self-importance. This t-shirt, I suppose, will have to do.

Shirt 2

Sorry, I don't. My closet is a bigger mess than I remember, I need to do some cleaning before I'll be able to find everything I'm afraid. I did find the Intrigue randomizers, and I had forgotten to mention that I never sleeved any of my randomizers. They have wear and whitening on the edges. I'd still say it's decent condition, but I wouldn't call it near mint. If the randomizers aren't a big deal I'll try to find the rest of the Intrigue cards before too long.

One other thing that I never posted here--since activity on this thread originally died pretty quickly--is that I received a copy of Dominion Second Edition for Christmas, and so now I'd rather trade/sell my full copy of the first edition rather than the "downgrade" pack. No plans to get Intrigue Second Edition, however.
