We should have a thread for those "5 of one card" hands. I got 5 Conspirators today. Didn't someone post a pic of 5 Rabbles once?

I seldom get a 5 copper hand, as early as the first or second turn!
I think you're misusing the word "seldom" here?

It's atypical but not incorrect. Less uncommon in British English.

So if someone has a really really extraordinarily good memory, are they playing a variant too?

Depends on whether you see memory as purely an innate ability. I don't, so a point counter eliminates part of the competition... but it's a part of the competition I don't particularly enjoy, so I play with the point counter.

The game is, after all, about fun.

This topic was split from the Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2011 thread

Sadly this was on the 9th... But I can't resist, so here's a challenge to beat for next year ^_^

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120109-082209-c5d53456.html

#1 Biderman: 317 points (227 ▼, 7 Colonies, 5 Nobles, a Province, and 4 Estates); 24 turns
          opening: Wharf / nothing
#2 mayasquer: 49 points (3 Provinces, a Colony, 2 Duchies, 3 Nobles, 5 Estates, and 4 ▼); 25 turns

If not the most points, I'm willing to bet I got the most points in one turn.... 30 buys, 6 Goons in play, I buy 4 Colonies, 1 Provence, 1 Estate, and 18 Coppers for a total of 180+40+6+1=227 points in one turn. The sad thing about this turn is that I had $54 and there were 5 Colonies left :/

Check this one out bro.  I have beaten your challenge.
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120808-182540-e493c5c2.html

This is the extremely rare double mega: all Colonies and Provinces in one turn.  Also picked up all 8 Duchies, a Nobles, and an Estate.  7 Goons in play.

8(10) + 8(6) + 8(3) + 1(2) + 1(1) + 26(7) = 337 points in one turn (377 total).

(Opponent is a Level 21 who was trying.  No nans.)

Wow, your opponent draws about as horribly as a Chapel deck possibly could. Although in his position, I Chapel 3 Coppers on Turn 3. Menagerie does you no good whatsoever if you don't get rid of some trash.

I hear ya.  I just couldn't help but laugh.  I suppose this is probably more analogous to the launch of an MMO.  I think Diablo II had similar issues as well.

The problem here is that an MMO involves high-intensity server code and hundreds of thousands of people. This is a card game for which only 7,858 people previously had an account to play online. It's not like they're being inundated with unprecendented traffic that would be sufficient to knock out 90% of sites on the Internet.

edit: Sorry, I sound like a dick. Not to say YOU BLATANTLY FUCKED UP, just saying this isn't the same sort of problem.

480
One thing I really like about this set is that it introduces the mechanic of "I don't want to play this card yet, it could help me more later" that takes a lot of players a long time to get. It's a much more intuitive step to go from "I don't want to play Spoils yet, it could help me more on my next shuffle" to "I don't want to play Smithy yet, it will trigger a reshuffle".

And the edge case scenario.... he has 5 FG in hand!  :D

If you have 5 FG in hand, you have at least half the FGs, and you should definitely NOT do the Reaction for them.

Why not? 5 FG is a single Province buy. Gold provides $1 less than an activated FG, is more consistent, and $9 today and Gold-Gold-3x??? tomorrow is a great position for consecutive Provinces. The only thing that might give you pause is if you're in a Colony game.

Given that that's impossible to do in anything resembling a well-played game, no.

484
It's not that great even in case 5, because if you have a treasure in hand, presumably your opponent can play it, which kicks you into your buy phase, preventing any action plays after that.

Well, that case is pretty simple to resolve via card text. He seems to be implying that you must play Action cards until you are out of either Actions or Action cards.

Also, I do realize I could be totally underestimating the card, and look forward to being proven wrong.

485
Does Boysenberry seem like a terrible card on 95% of boards to anyone else? I see a few things happening most often:

1. BM-Boysenberry: Good if there are no bad cards in the Kingdom. A bad $4 makes it okay, a bad $5 makes it bad, and a a $6 kingdom will almost always make it awful. Especially if that card is Border Village, in which case Boysenberry is going to give you BV-Duchy or BV-[Counting House or similar] a lot.
2. Combo/chain/KC/etc. boards: Terrible. Opponent will terminal you out of actions as quickly as possible. Unless he wants to make you promptly pile the Curses, in which case he will stockpile +Buys for you, THEN terminal you out of actions.
3. Any board with trashing: Terrible. Opponent will trash all your good cards.
4. Any board with discard-for-benefit: Bad. Makes Warehouse, etc. untouchable, and if your opponent manages to put one or two in your deck, be prepared to buy the rest of them, followed by all the Curses and Estates.
5. The rare board where there are literally no terminals: Ungodly powerful.

It just seems completely untouchable on most boards, middling on a few, and ungodly powerful on some rare ones.

(edit: had one inaccuracy)

my back-of-envelope calculations have the odds of this draw at .0113 percent...

from this deck:  [18 cards]
5 Grand Markets, 2 Farming Villages, 2 Fool's Golds, 1 Rabble, 1 Salvager, 2 Silvers, 1 Province

Turn 14 ...
glengarry buys a Province.
   glengarry buys a Province.
   glengarry buys a Province.
   glengarry buys an Estate.
   (glengarry reshuffles.)
(glengarry draws: 4 Provinces and an Estate.)

this was after to go up 25/12 with 1 provi left in the deck and my knowing oppo has with a fresh draw off this deck:
 [26 cards]
5 Grand Markets, 3 Farming Villages, 2 Rabbles, 1 Chapel, 1 City, 4 Silvers, 2 Provinces

with my opponent representing a max buy of 18, i felt pretty good.

anyhow, i'm pretty bad at estimating draw odds, but i think my 1/10000 math is pretty sound.
(5/18 x 4/17 x 3/16 x 2/15 x 1/14) = .0001136

of course, with the extra turn, he got there.

>:(

Well, you can fail even worse by picking up one Fool's Gold (or a Farming Village picking up a Fool's Gold). So there are two FGs, of which you can get one, and a FG can be drawn three ways (FG, or FV -> FG, or FV -> FV -> FG).
5/18 * 4/17 * 3/16 * 2/15 * 1/14 +
5/18 * 4/17 * 3/16 * 2/15 * 2/14 +
5/18 * 4/17 * 3/16 * 2/15 * 2/14 +
5/18 * 4/17 * 2/16 * 3/15 * 2/14 +
5/18 * 2/17 * 4/16 * 3/15 * 2/14 +
2/18 * 5/17 * 4/16 * 3/15 * 2/14

= ( 5 * (5*4*3*2*2) + (5*4*3*2*1) ) / (18*17*16*15*14)
= ( 5 * 3 * (5*4*3*2) ) / (18*17*16*15*14)
= 1 / 571.2

We'll ignore FV -> FG, because that makes the problem significantly complex and is a highly unlikely corner case.

We're also assuming that one point is sufficient for you to win. If you need a Duchy, you can add a GM to any of those, or change the FG to a Silver, putting us around 1/250. If you need to kill the Province pile, most hands with no Salvager or Rabble will suffice, so you're probably well below 1/100 (but the calculation gets complicated at that point).

So it's not quite on the scale of 10,000 to 1, but ouch. Your deck did pick an amusing way to screw you though.

Is it just me or can't this be calculated as binomial coefficient
(22)
(5 ) =  26334
So odds are 1/26336 ?

You're half-right. It can be done with combinatorics (my stats skills are too rusty, so I essentially did combinatorics via the long way above), but there are more than five dead cards. He loses in far more ways than by drawing all his green, although drawing all the green is the funniest.

I had an absolute masterstroke of a game to win from Seat 4 in Game 2 (possibly my proudest Dominion moment to date), then followed up my two wins with a 4th and 3rd to fall on my face.
Charbal meanwhile hung around in the first two and picked up his own win from Seat 4 in Game 3, and put himself in pretty good qualifying position.

Game 3 is a nice example of how Curses can cascade sometimes. I gained 10 (!) in eight turns, including one on all three Jesters played in that time.

Game 2 was wonderful for me. I'm sitting fourth, so when all three of my opponents open Moneylender, I figure it's time for a daring plan. I take the only +buy in Woodcutter, and proceed to create a NV-Warehouse-Library deck supported by the Woodcutters, pick up 4 Provinces and a Duchy on turns 11-12, and win thanks to everyone else being pretty even.

Thanks schnee and samath for being spectators to our duel. =P

Not a particularly well-played match, really, but an Ironworks loop supported by Oasis and Watchtower to end a 6-high pile seems like a really unusual way to pile out the game.

I think theory's article is still pretty much right on.  http://dominionstrategy.com/2010/11/29/intrigue-saboteur/

Except for the CLASSIC BLUNDER: never go—wait, no, that's the other one—you don't gain from your opponent discarding bad cards from your deck, because the cards you lose are, on average, slightly better than a random selection from your deck.  It's this problem with the modification that, because we're drawing from a finite deck, successive "births" are increasingly likely to be "boys".

You have it backwards. Because you will eventually run out of bad cards/girls, there is a cap on the number of bad cards/girls per Saboteur. Therefore you are going to hit more good cards than bad! Girls = boys only because there is a small chance of a near-infinite number of girls from one family.

Game Reports / Re: Mining in a Colony Game: Don't Buy Silver?
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:48:39 pm »
I don't agree with the idea that adding a Bishop would be bad because it would just add another terminal... because the Bishop should be used to trash one or more of those other terminals for VP!
Bishop is rarely, if ever, a good idea in a Colony game. You're giving up a card and your terminal Action for 1-2 VP a pop, which just isn't going to win you a Colony game. Meanwhile, your opponent is getting slightly better trashing out of it, and building up to Colonies. You're going to lose a lot of games by scores like 50-42 when your opponent easily gets to 5 Colonies.

In which two Level 40+s empty a pile in 3.5 turns, then promptly trash half of them.

Context: It was a Remake game, and we both got underway quickly. He suddenly rushes the Silk Roads, and I'm forced to pick up a handful to stop him wiping the floor with me. I have no use for them, so I intend to trash them; he has no use for 5 of them, so he does the same.

What do you think? The brilliant interplay of two players at the top of their games? Total lunacy?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Most Skill-Intensive Cards
« on: January 11, 2012, 01:31:40 am »
All cards have a context. In terms of deck balance (buying), these are some of the more difficult situations:
Bridge on a Village-free board, or Woodcutter on a drawing-light board (the value of trading your Action for a Buy)
Minor Tactician loops (Tactician-Vault with no support, for example)
Scheme on a drawing-light board
Envoy on a Village-free board with cantrips
Ambassador, always. It's easy to buy too many and not have enough buying power, or too few and get buried.
Bazaar on a terminal-heavy board
Menagerie on boards with light to moderate trashing
Conspirator on most boards, unless they lack +buys
Moat on a Village-free board with strong attacks
etc. etc.

DrHades covered the difficult cards to play very well above. However, I'd like to add one more: Salvager.
Salvager is the card whose play requires the best understanding of the transition from midgame to endgame. Salvage power cards for victory cards at the right time, and you gain a huge advantage. Pull the trigger early and your deck fizzles. Pull it too late and your opponent takes a lead, which is tough to overcome when he can salvage a Province to end the game.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: More Fun With (Un)popular Buys
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:00:42 am »
Most:
$7 King's Court 92.9 [6]
$6 Goons 91.1 [10]
$5 Minion 92.6 [7]
$4 Remake 96.7 [1]; Tournament 96.5 [3]; Salvager 91.1 [9]
$3P Familiar 91.7 [8]
$3 Fishing Village 96.6 [2]; Ambassador 94.7 [4]
$2 Chapel 93.3 [5]

I think I'm the first to end up with Salvager in the list. I love that card. It may be the most underrated card in Dominion for its late-game versatility and power.
(If this board came up in Isotropic, I'd consider quitting immediately. Looks incredibly boring.)

Least:
$6 Adventurer 7.1 [5]
$5 Counting House 2.6 [1]; Cache 3.6 [3]; Explorer 9.1 [8]
$4 Bureaucrat 3.1 [2]; Thief 5.1 [4]; Coppersmith 10.1 [10]
$3P Philosopher's Stone 10.0 [9]
$3 Workshop 8.4 [6]; Chancellor 9.0 [7]

Well, guess we're running a Counting House deck. Or just Big Money.

Also, here's the Isotropic population's list:

Most:
$7 King's Court
$6 Border Village; Nobles; Goons
$5 Festival
$4 Caravan; Tournament; Worker's Village; Farming Village
$3 Fishing Village

Isotropic severely overrates +Actions. On a side note, on this board I buy KC at $7, alternate Goons and Nobles at $6, and FV at $3-5. Maybe a few Caravans, but unlikely.

Least:
$6 Adventurer
$5 Counting House; Stash; Harvest; Cache; Explorer
$4 Navigator; Coppersmith; Bureaucrat
$3 Chancellor

I buy 3x as many Navigators as the population. Otherwise this looks a lot like my least-buys.
Again, this is a Counting House board; else just straight Big Money.

Yikes.  Resolving these kinds of disputes is the worst part of a referee's job.  Do you have an incomplete log?  It doesn't sound like you had an insurmountable advantage, but maybe the game reflects differently.
It might be a good idea for players to agree to a procedure in these cases beforehand, probably such that any disconnect game is adjudicated by one of the organizers.

This is, of course, if our gracious organizers are okay with this.

Thief division: #6 Stealth Tomato vs. #59 Geefour

Geefour quickly goes up 2-0 to threaten the first major upset (including a 79-16 walloping in Game 2), but Stealth takes it down in 6 games. Great early-game play by Geefour nearly got him to 3-1. Well-played match, sir.

Also not a fan. I liked jockeying for position on the leaderboard--now it just doesn't seem right, especially with the ridiculous variance coming in.

It was also nice being able to see from the leaderboard approximately how long someone had been playing (career ranked games).
