I played against Dondon in Chicago and since he didn't play online at the time he said he had never really played with Cornucopia cards before, right before destroying me with a much better hamlet/menagerie engine than my own. It made me very sad.

(This is now the official Dondon151 topic)

I'm surprised I haven't run into any of your posts on r/nfl theory, from the looks of it you post there a decent amount. I'm sure I will at some point.

Finally got the last card I needed, Walled Village, about a week ago =)

All the dominion expansions (and dominion)

A copy of Ticket to Ride I found for 10 bucks because the box was slightly damaged

Therapy: the game, which I got as a jokey gift, and is not a terrible game if you were just teleported here from the 80s.

It's tough for me to buy something if I don't know 100% I'll get a ton of use out of it, and currently these along with a deck of cards is generally enough. At some point I'll buy Mr. Jack, though I'm not sure when.

Looks like Jennifer Lawrence in the Hunger Games to me...

And if you could all stop using the word Forge, that would be great. Feel free to say create, or make, like in the sentence "Make is a decent 7 card but it's often too late in the game to use effectively by the time you get it"

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Google + Walled Village
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:53:46 am »
If you really want to play with Walled Village, just use a regular village, and make people spend 4 to buy it, and then sometimes put it back on top of your deck if you feel like it. I think I fell asleep once in game looking at the card. Frisk is right, whoever chose the card clearly doesn't play this game. I don't really mind if I never see it, personally.

I just want to make sure though, let's say I already signed up for Goko but didn't do it through G+, there is SOME way of me still being able to get Walled Village, right? It would be dumb for everyone for there not to be, because there's nothing advertising it when you sign up, saying hey, if you want this card do this. Advertising doesn't work through arbitrarily rewarding people who already use your product, so I'm assuming there's something else?

Yeah it's randomly up...maybe they just had little faith in themselves, and if it was going to crash again, wanted to make sure it crashed with few people noticing? Or at the least just without the big fanfare they had last time.

Venture seems like it would work well with Embassy. You don't want more than 2 Embassies, so if you hit 5 after those 2, you buy a Venture. The main issue with Embassy is cycling and making sure you don't have too many hands without an Embassy, and Venture can somewhat help control cycling because you get to choose how many of them you use. But regardless of that, yeah, Embassy + BM is boring and definitely the winning strategy here.

Also, a question for when you do play Venture + BM, at what point do you want more Ventures and at what point do you want Gold? The deck here only has one gold and I would think it would be helpful to pick up a couple more of them at some point.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: "Play faster newb"
« on: September 16, 2012, 03:32:10 pm »
I'm even ok with taking a minute on each turn, assuming you can tell they're new and not entirely sure what they're doing. The thing that frustrates me is when someone builds a complicated engine and then spends 20 seconds on EVERY SINGLE MOVE. I played a game like that and by the time it hit turn 15 it had taken over half an hour. It was rough.

The idea behind the wishing wells, correct or not, is that it's the best cycling option and allows you to play your ambassador faster, which is very important. This could be done better by ambassador/ambassador, but then when you're trying to draw your whole deck later on, you're stuck with 2 ambassadors clogging stuff up instead of one.

Anything for $8 is too late. It may seem like level 45 players are wizards, but they usually build something nice starting from the beginning of the game. If they have to start with a deck full of junk and turn 12-15 or whatever, they may have a lot of digging their way out to do. If you start with a level 20 player at $5, you can just close out the game too fast for anyone to dig their way out of that kind of mess.

I'm going to disagree, level 45s are totally wizards and no one can convince me otherwise. That being said, I agree that 8 is probably too ridiculous of a price point and that 6 would probably have been better.

By knows the basics I mean that they know how to play the game. I agree with Jive Junkie that people who have played almost no games love action cards and buying as many of them as they can. It would more than likely be a sub-BM strategy they would play, cause like, Woodcutters are just super cool. And Secret Chambers are blue! That means they must be good. (I played a "tournament" once where one of the people bought 9 Secret Chambers. I won 10 bucks from the tournament, and I thought that Masquerade was a bad card. Those were the days.)

Hmm, no one is saying the level 45, but there has to be some board where that's what you would want to go with. Perhaps a complex Goons engine board, or Scrying Pool, or TR/Saboteur where you can eventually trash whatever their lead is.

Yeah, I'd say just about any board where you would buy a Province with your first $8 is a board where you should consider the level 45.

Where you would buy a province? I would think the more complex boards would be the ones where you wouldn't.

But, let's say they are a level 0 player. Will they even recognize this kind of board as being the one to call on a level 45 player?

I know it seems a little pedantic, but it's in your opinion which should you go with, so I guess in the scenario you are some random unnamed person who tells the novice which to go with.

Probably the level 10 because they can take the level 10s advice and learn from it. At which point they buy the level 20 and then the level 45 ;)

But they can only buy 1 of them =P

And I am re-thinking these price points a bit, perhaps the level 20 player should be 6 or the level 45 player should be 6...

Dominion General Discussion / A super random question
« on: September 12, 2012, 07:23:56 pm »
Let's say 2 novices are playing each other, they know the basics but have almost zero concept of strategy. HOWEVER, they also have the option of buying the help of a partner who can tell them what to do. They have 3 options, and they can only choose one:

1) A level 10 isotropic player who costs 4
2) A level 20 isotropic player who costs 5
3) A level 45 isotropic player who costs 8

Which one would you suggest they buy? Essentially it boils down to, can the level 20/45 player catch up to the level 10 player? Those early turns are very, very important.

I know this would be very board-dependent, so feel free to have different answers for different contexts, such as smithy/BM vs. Scrying Pool or trashing vs. no trashing.

I played a game with Counterfeit, Bandit Camp, and Forager, and both Bandit Camp and Forager seemed to go well with Counterfeit. Counterfeit loves spoils, since you're just going to be returning them anyways, and Counterfeit also slims your deck down and allows you to play Bandit Camp more often and get more spoils. Forager, of course, feeds off the cards that counterfeit has trashed. I guess these are both pretty obvious.

I don't like how he built, but I will point out that ambassador should almost never ever be ignored.

I agree, and in pretty much any kingdom where you can build an engine (like this one), I'll go for them, but I don't particularly like them, so sometimes I stray.

Even setting aside that ambassador is a factor at some point (I would think at the start, but I can see why some would think later on), you approach this game very similarly to Hunting Party + X... except you have no X.  That's a trouble considering you do not easily hit $8... You hit $7 quite often.

Unfortunately, the best "X" is festival, so I doubt festival + multiple HPs would win the game, even unless the opponent is loading up on nobles.

To answer your question, I would have purchased a festival at Turn 10, 12, 13 and maaaaybe 14.  Then just gain all the pieces you need over and over with the economy/+buy.

Yeah, those 7's really killed me, and I didn't think about it until just about right now, but with the Festival's +buy I could have definitely bought 2 hunting parties some turns and saved some time and definitely would have won against a try to draw your whole deck with just Nobles strategy. Oh well.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201209/12/game-20120912-115733-bc870203.html

A game with two very different strategies, and theirs managed to eek out the win. I have a particular dislike for Ambassador so I always look for ways to ignore it. A few questions:

Which strategy do you think will win more often here?

What turn would you have bought a Festival? I know I should have bought one, but I just didn't find a good time. Perhaps early on,
or perhaps when I bought the Nobles?

Do you think Hunting Party/Ghost Ship would have worked well here? It seems like his Wishing Wells would have been a reasonably effective counter against them.

If you have an engine and you've trashed most things down, or really any time you're trying to buy more than one province in a turn I might take Catacombs over Embassy, simply because you get more cards.

If that's the case, you may as well have a Smithy.

Yes, in that case you would rather have a Smithy instead of an Embassy.
