I'm really sorry I messed up the bracket by showing up late, it just happened that I managed to catch my scheduled opponent early enough, that he was kind enough to agree playing and that the match went all the way to 3-2-2 (!) which obviously didn't help at all.  Anyways, thanks for cleaning up the mess behind me :-)

I actually liked the one-day(ish) double elimination format, but I have some suggestions:
1/ The loser's bracket has to play twice as many rounds as the winners bracket, so perhaps it makes sense to have shorter matches in the loser's bracket.  First to 3 wins seems good to me but probably first to 2 wins (in the loser's bracket only) will help smooth out the tournament.  Yes I know extra variance but well.
2/ I really dislike the presence of first-round byes.  Dominion can handle 3/4P games, I know they are definitely different from 2P games but I believe the first round could be done with a mix of 2 and 3P games, that would still be better than direct byes (even though I dislike 3P games personally, I would still prefer that).  One way could be 1st=1 win, 2nd=0.5 win, 3rd=0 win (split ties accordingly) and once a player reaches 3 "wins" he is qualified, and the remaining two continue playing 2P matches until one of them reaches 3 wins as well (so that the first winner doesn't have to play "useless" matches), resulting into two qualifiers.  Or perhaps reduce this to two wins requirement as 3P matches will definitely be longer than 2P matches.
3/ To avoid long rounds randomly happening due to lots of draws (e.g. my first round), score draws as 0.5-0.5, not 0-0 (and keep playing until split if tied at 3-3).  Again some (very small) extra variance but probably helps.

antony 4, insomniac-X 3
we played with 6 cards each time, which may or may not have been too much... still, some very nice games, one of my favorite rounds.
1. insomniac 20, antony 35 The only game won by P2.  Tournament+FG > Tournament+Silver, getting Followers wins.
2. insomniac 65, antony 46 Tournament + Silver > Moneylender + Silver, getting Followers wins.
3. antony 40, insomniac 27 A funny degenrate Ambassador game where we both fill our decks with random actions to activate Horn of Plenties.  I win thanks to a 3-Province turn
4. insomniac 46, antony 26 Tournament + Ambassador > Tournament + Chapel (I kind of guessed that but decided that mirroring as P2 wouldn't be successful either).
5. antony 14, insomniac 5 Another Horn game, but this time there aren't enough cantrips to get to Provinces with them.  We both get 5 Horns, grab Worker's Villages, Oases, Masquerades, Jacks, etc etc... and I end up 3-piling it.  No Horn was trashed in this game(!!!)
6. insomniac 48, antony 25 P1 Tournament win.  Ouch
7. antony 37, insomniac 18 Insomniac gets an early HP lead, but I grab Cities after YW emptied Curses ftw.

antony 5 wins, 1 tie, Titandrake 1 win, 1 tie

1. antony 37, Titandrake 34:  Ambassador vs. tactician.  I open silver silver to go for the tactician immediately and get the ambassador later, whereas Titandrake does the opposite.  We get our last reshuffle on the same turn and it comes down to who gets the tactician first, with identically-sized decks.  I do.
2. Titandrake 36, antony 46: Cutpurse-(mandarin)-BM, neither lookout not cartographers look helpful here.
3. Titandrake 37, antony 48: Smithy-BM, I do get a FV, a bazaar and (???) a TR that draws dead a couple of times.  An early estate provides a tiebreaker for Titandrake and I have to decide to break the PPR, but at the end my better economy wins.
4. Titandrake 27, antony 30: Ghost ships, cutpurses, lighthouse (and city) -- and a golem for me which worked out fine though I'm not sure it's fast enough.
5. Titandrake 35, antony 27: BV/governor/salvager/FV, lots of possibilities and I misplay my governor a little bit (say on Turn 10 where with governor/salvager/BV/gold/silver (one other gold in deck) I gain gold and salvage BV instead of BV->province, salvage gold->province which looks better a posteriori).
6. antony 28, Titandrake 12: Sea hag... and the rest is random crap: treasury, NV, KC, etc. A long and painful game but out of sheer luck I win the curse split 6-4; now Titandrake decides to run out duchies and treasures but I manage to grab my share while getting a province (and another one at the end) on the way.
7. Titandrake 72-antony 72: Definitely the most exciting game of the set, I go for heavy bishopping while Titandrake gets vineyards, with HT as +buy and NV/haven as easy targets; unfortunately there are no hand expanders so HT is of limited power.  I get lots of interesting decisions as he was powering up his vineyards: do I trash my province to get the last one faster or my gold to get some more points?  My last province immediately after his 21th action ties the game.

antony 5 (10 pts), ednever 2 (4 pts)
1. ednever 34, antony 33 Pawns give the winning extra buy in a fairly even minion/conspirator game.
2. antony 15, ednever 1 Young witch > minion when the bane is duchess.
3. ednever 53, antony 44 Minions prefer going to the harem rather than working with nobles.
4. antony 27, ednever 24 Swindler luck.
5. ednever 12, antony 17 IGG game is decided by duchies, not by golds (and an initial 5/2 helps... a lot).
6. ednever 56, antony 70 Dukes, stables, baron.  Do you go for dukes immediately or just as support?  Anyways harem was clearly a poor choice.
7. ednever 42, antony 51 After cleaning up the decks with TR'ed ambassadors, moneylenders and TPs, some gold is more useful than harems to grab the extra provinces.

Turns out I managed to get rid of the curses with two masquerades and mitigated the discarding effect with all the minions for a close win (all curses, minions and provinces gone, though I could have tried to three-pile with the shanty towns as well)... but what's your choice?

antony: 5 wins; shark_bait: 2 wins
shark_bait 38 - antony 45
I go for a basic lab + BM, grabbing a HT on the way, shark_bait goes for the more sexy festival + watchtower, which was slower this time.
shark_bait 27 - antony 42
CR/Horn/HT/Mining Village/TR/Workshop/Woodcutter: I was thinking about going for a simple BM here when I see my opponent start with a workshop -- thus convincing me that there could be something fancy to do by workshopping TRs, mining villages and HTs.  We both go this route and shark_bait gets a horn on the way, but draw it dead a couple of times.  At the end we both run out of steam but I got two more provinces before three-piling.
shark_bait 16 (14 turns) - antony 16 (13 turns)
Vineyards, Hamlets, Remodels, (Witch)... RUN!
shark_bait 44 - antony 40
Witch/Margrave/Bureaucrat/Feast/Gardens: shark_bait opens bureaucrat (?) whereas I choose a feast; unfortunately my witch misses the reshuffle and I make a mistake when I take a second feast which draws dead with my witch a couple of times, I lose the curse split 6-4 and gardens aren't enough to recover.
antony 25 - shark_bait 15
Hum. A copycat of game 3.  Really.
shark_bait 24 - antony 25
Familiar/TR/Governor/Remodel.  shark_bait gets very unlucky here with familiar, allowing me to get some advance in cursing; then we switch into a classic governor game (gold->province, with some help by TRs and remodels).  The extra cursing ends up being what separates us.
shark_bait 49 - antony 46
Lab/Horn/Garden/Baron: I always have trouble with horn so I go the simple BM route, including a baron and two labs which quickly give me a 5-0 lead in provinces (incl. a couple of turns with exactly $8, I was feeling pretty lucky by then); while I run out of steam shark_bait impressively mounts a horn machine rattling away the horns and the labs; still I try to grab enough gardens to deprive him of these points (he is clearly going to be above 50 cards...) but he manages to reach exactly 60 cards on the last turn, thus winning by 3.  A very impressive win!

And it may also be worth noting that all games except the 1st one had Potion... do we get to play Base on the Alchemy round?  ;)

A quick look at the code tells me that you need at least 7 copies of it.  Perhaps that could be mentioned on the goals list page?

Now that everyone's bragging... it took me ~600 games to get to 50% (>1 average win point); today (after 747 games) I got to 50% as P2 :) [table position 2   178-173-12   1.014]

As suggested in another thread: Won with all curses in one's own deck.
Another idea (yes, it also comes from a recent game): Won without ever buying treasure (minion, I'm looking at you).

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201202/06/game-20120206-021951-7154220e.html
1/ What is your opening choice on 4/3 with: Caravan, Chancellor, Chapel, Coppersmith, Duchess, Embargo, Fool's Gold, Lookout, Minion, and Noble Brigand.
2/ panda goes for NB, then Minions, aren't these two slightly contradictory?
3/ Anyways, I decide to avoid having to mirror the minion rush by embargoing them... then take a 3-1 lead in Provinces, at the cost of horribly slowing down my deck.  Now my opp embargoes NB (???) so I have an easy endgame by embargoing Provinces.

"Won with all curses in hand at the end of the game"?

Simulation / (Reasonably easy) way to bias the simulation?
« on: January 05, 2012, 08:40:13 am »
Hi,
Today I played a (no-Colony) kingdom with no $3, where the $4 were Feast and Quarry, and the interesting $5 were afaict Tactician / Treasure / Torturer.  I guess we were both going to go for BM/Tactician, but I was lucky and got a 5/2 opening so opened Torturer to slow down my opponent.  My opponent got lucky himself a few turns later and got $10 on a Tactician turn, so got two treasuries and started a Tactician/Treasure combo.  Anyways, I ended up pulling a close win, he wasn't able to stack Treasures fast enough.
I tried to simulate this on Dominiate, and indeed stacking Treasures seems too slow (the VP graph shows that it takes the lead only around turn 25 or so), but then I thought that merely giving a list of priorities is not going to be enough, instead I should also force me to get a 5/2 opener and my opponent to get $10 before say the 4th reshuffle (otherwise it's clear that Treasure-stacking is not going to be viable).
So is there a way, either to force that, or perhaps more simply, to throw away any run that doesn't satisfy this property?  (of course I could also try to come up with a gain priority list that adapts itself, but then quite often both bots would end up playing single Tactician, watering down the difference in strengths.)

Here are the logs.
Game 1 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111129-210628-cdd8c67a.html) 14-31: never in contention, a newbie mistake I guess.
Game 2 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111129-211709-34b223a1.html) 32-26: only win :p
Game 3 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111129-213135-6cc64590.html) 43-45
Game 4 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111129-214352-8e0bf3c8.html) 62-64: second 2-point loss in a row...
Game 5 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111129-215322-05bac61f.html) 61-79: multiple monuments was a big mistake indeed, they collided more than a couple of times when a silver instead would have been much more useful.
Anyways, quite interesting games, thanks to chwhite for staying and commenting about my play.
