Good catch re. time zones.  Please PM me your time zones (I will send out PMs asking for that).  I will accept entries until I have everybody's info.

So far I have 8 players

antony
ipofanes
qdread
markusin
popsofctown
Lekkit
moomoo
JimKam

I would suggest a 7 round RR with two rounds per week (one round per week seems too slow for me).  Play 4 games (base, echoes, e/f, e/f/c), defaulting to standard achievement target (but you can play extra achievement if you both agree).  Ranking by number of matches (=4 games) won, with number of games won as tiebreaker.

If no one objects to the format within 24hr, I will create a Challonge bracket with these entries plus whoever posts there before then and send out assignments.

As in chess (3 for a win always felt silly to me anyways).  I would use number of games won as a tiebreaker, if needed.

I would just count ties as... ties.  We can always come up with something else if we need a KO stage.
I personally dislike base but I know others feel similarly about efc so having all "historical" combinations was the best compromise I could come up with (playing extensions not in order never made much sense to me).

Anyone interested in an innovation tournament?
Suggested format: round robin of 4-game matches (base, echoes, echoes+figures, echoes+figures+cities), to keep everybody happy :-)

The rules say that only one karma can be active at a time, although it is mildly unclear whether this applies to all players together or separately.  In this case, Archimedes' karma was in effect, so I guess Isotropic uses the former interpretation.
Although... Archimedes is a "if you would... first... " karma and the rules seem to suggest that the karma is considered resolved as soon as the "first" part is completed.

Because if factory-cards keep being tucked-instead-of-scored, at some point all top 6s except Napoleon will have been scored and thus Napoleon will have to score itself.

Radio-telescope doesn't like seeing the cards it drew go anywhere else than in hand (yes, I'm looking at you Rhazes).

And another:
I melded anatomy from my forecast, forcing a share on the barometer echo (I was behind in leaves, and my opponent had a 5 in his forecast), but didn't get to draw a figure (even though there were still figures available).

I don't have the link, but in case Doug is reading this: Susan Blackmore crashes the game if the card she is supposed to score (by virtue of being activated) scores itself first (e.g., in our case, loom, which was the lowest card on my opponent's deck).

Forced sharing is one of the few "negative feedback" mechanisms available in Innovation (that gives the trailing player some chance to catch up) and needs to stay there IMO.

I agree that nerfing Measurement and Almanac as suggested by ksasaki is probably more important.  While opinions may differ, I consider the Archimedes + Clock interaction quite nifty (but that's also because it's much rarer than Measurement or Alchemy tech-ups).

Oh, you can certainly build nifty boards allowing you to endorse invention while splaying back with philosophy, allowing you to grab quite a few points as well as a ton of cities, but I agree that this goes with the idea that "every card is overpowered".  Moreover, I feel it's a less "artificial" rule than the 2-top-card rule (which just seems to come out of nowhere).

After playing a lot of Cities, I kind of agree with Kathryl proposition (endorsing as a free action, but locks out the corresponding stack for the rest of the turn, and only if the action hasn't been used before).  This would encourage more diversity and also prevent ridiculous spamming (not even talking about industrialization... but an early code of laws(->tuck+[tuck, splay, draw]x2) or metalworking (->monument anyone?)) can be quite deadly too).

Innovation General Discussion / FiS: subtler bugs

On my turn 9, I try to meld Printing Press from my forecast, triggering the karma of Sejong the Great (if you would meld a blue card of value above 3, instead return it and meld a card of value one higher), so I meld Coal instead (and not Printing Press).  I am still asked whether I want to apply Printing Press' dogma, but when I say yes it applies Sejong the Great's (the top blue card at that point) dogma instead (afaict).  I don't know what the official rules say but it is well established that a card's dogma can apply even after the card isn't at the top of its pile anymore (e.g. if a first part of the dogma scored the card itself), so I would guess that instead I should still have gotten Printing Press' dogma?

I'm looking into doing stuff with the Innovation logs. Many interesting statistics are going to require parsing the game logs and reconstructing the game state, such as how likely you are to win based on your number of achievements, current tech difference, particular cards melded, and so on. This is of course daunting. Has anyone made a start on it? Is your code available?
I wrote this code when the logs didn't include the "long header", so it has to be modified to take care of the new log format I think.
https://github.com/anntzer/innovation-stats
To parse a game log, run
Code: [Select]
python innovation_parser.py <logfile>.htmlRequires Python3 but probably easy to make it work with Python 2.
This does not reconstruct the game state (because the log info is actually not sufficient for that right now, I believe) but outputs a list of "events" (basically by matching against a huge regexp), from which you can e.g. get the running scores or the running achievement count.
I would be happy to work more on that... some day.

I just needed to draw a 7 as quickly as possible for my 6th achievement before my opponent starts melding overpowered stuff through Atomic Theory.
Also note Monumental Currency, for 27 points...

Sounds like we need a CR for innovation ;P
I started working on a parser for Innovation games.  I actually emailed dougz some time ago to mention the fact that logs were not sufficient to get the complete game state (not including what's in the decks, of course) but didn't get a reply yet.

Innovation Articles / Article draft: Chopsticks
« on: March 20, 2013, 05:35:40 pm »
After winning another game with Chopsticks, I just realized how strong this card is, so here we go...

Chopsticks (yellow, age 1) - void, leaf, leaf, echo
echo: Draw a 1
dogma: If the 1 deck has at least a card, you may transfer its bottom card to the available achievements.

So let's say both you and your opponent (assuming 2p, I have no experience with 3 or 4p games) have managed some early scoring for 20-30 points each, grabbed a few achievements, and are ploughing your way through ages 3-5.  Somehow, you manage to draw Chopsticks, perhaps through some random dogma - or perhaps you saved it carefully since the beginning.  If the 1 deck is not empty, then you can suddenly grab an achievement per turn: apply the dogma of Chopsticks, and achieve the 1 you just transfered.

There are a few reasons why Chopsticks is so strong.  First, it does not care about sharing: because you play the dogma after your opponent in case of a share, you can make sure only one new 1 is achievable (and in case of a share, your opponent gets to draw a 1 while you draw a 1 and a card of your current level, which is a good trade...).  Second, it is very hard for your opponent to stop you: he has either to steal Chopsticks of your board (I actually don't think this is possible in the early ages), cover it by sharing some meld action (fairly random and unefficient), or attack your score pile (Medecine and Mapmaking are probably too slow, and even at age 4 there is only Anatomy and Toilet which hurt just a little bit more).  Note that score-pile attacks that transfer points to your opponent's score hurt less than normally, because as long as you have enough points, you can keep the rhythm of one achievement per turn, while your opponent needs normally at least three actions per dogma (score, tech up, achieve).
Another thing that hurts Chopsticks is depletion of the 1 deck.  If this is a concern, there are cards that can return 1s, or you can try to draw (or have you opponent) draw Echo 1s instead of base 1s.

One turn from the end, if I just drew (A.I.) and melded it I would have won by achievements: #1 and the five special achievements.  Moreover I would have managed to get each of these achievements by fulfilling their "non-dogma" conditions (i.e. not by activating a dogma).
Oh well, I thought I had more chance to get there by Empiricism (a green draw-upsplay, or possibly another lucky draw, would have given me my 12th clock).

Innovation Articles / Re: Article request: Sharing
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:50:23 am »
Sometimes the extra draw of sharing is really powerful too.  Typical example may come from Math: say you Math a 3 (the highest level you've reached so far) into a 4, and they do the same.  Now you draw a 4 for sharing and get to Math it too, reaching lvl 5 when your opponent is still at level 4.
When forecasts come into play then the extra draw is even stronger of course.
