nsnyder (20 seed) vs. Slice of Pi (45 seed)

nsnyder wins 4-2

Game 1: nsnyder 43 - Slice of Pi 56
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-164947-49c21b3f.html

I went smugglers/cities/goons, he went remodels and green cards.  I think I made some tactical errors, and SoP played tactically well.  Second to last turn I could have got within 2 points, but not quite enough.

Game 2: nsnyder 37 - Slice of Pi 30
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-170215-9b727adf.html

Governor/Militia game.  I opened chapel and SoP went for silver to grab Governor earlier, but then bought a chapel later once SoP had some Governors.  The game was very tactical in VP late.  I kept one Estate (only partially on purpose) which kept me ahead in the point game, but SoP got a two duchy turn so I had to try to take the second to last province and it worked out.

Game 3: Slice of Pi 27? - nsnyder 39?

Forgot the log for this.  Scores are approximate.  I opened Smithy, SoP opened Remake, and my Smithy/Stables was fast enough that SoP couldn't keep up.  Not a very interesting game, so the lack of log isn't a huge loss.

Game 4: Slice of Pi 46 - nsnyder 39
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-172311-a6f04cd1.html

I went for a green card rush with workshop/island/tunnel.  SoP wisely avoided the discarding attacks and did cartographers and money.  I didn't end the piles in time.  I think I got a little unlucky with workshops colliding and too many 1's and not enough 2's, but he played well.  I was hoping he would buy more tunnels to go with his cartographers so that the game would end faster, but he didn't bite.

Game 5: nsnyder 71 - Slice of Pi 57
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-173756-67e08c47.html

Colonies game where I went for governor/possession, and he skipped possessions.  I got very unlucky with potions early (my first potion hit 5P the first two times and my second potion hit my first potion twice), but eventually the possessions got rolling just in time.

Game 6: nsnyder 64 - Slice of Pi 43
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201212/03/game-20121203-174705-4efe33d4.html

I thought I was doomed when SoP got the 5/2 and opened Mountebank/Embargo, but I somehow managed to crawl back.  Ended up with pretty similar decks for the most part, except I had golds and he had governors.  This had a very funny early part where SoP embargoed Mountebanks, I bought a Mountebank gaining a curse, and then ended up discarding that curse to block SoP first Mountebank play.

Thanks to Slice of Pi for the fun games!

What I wanted was something where you could just flag people as offensive, and if it happened too often the person would get banned.  But probably better would be to just automatically mute them for a month or something if they get flagged by 3 different people.

Actually a script to automatically mute people who use homophobic slurs might actually catch most of the really obnoxious players.

That's why I only included people who were multiple offenders or called people offensive names.

Dear Mathguy,

I'm sorry I played followers on turns 11, 12, 13, and 14, and then again on turns 16 and 17 (http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111113-195023-275a7021.html).  I guess there is dominion karma since you beat me 4-3 in the tournament after this had been our only previous game.

In 3000+ games I've only had 3 people I had terrible experiences with (I can't remember the third one's handle).  There's got to be some way to distinguish the 1/1000 outliers from ordinary behavior.

Sorry theory, in going through that thread I found your comment saying you weren't excited about such a list.  I had missed that page the first time (I wasn't following the thread closely).  If you want to delete this thread I won't be offended.

Anyway, mute doesn't really help unless you know which players to mute.  Once I've had an experience like with one of these players I don't want to play them whether or not they can talk.  I play dominion for fun and it's not fun to play against the likes of yourface and ddubois.

What I would really like is some way to automatically mute all players who get enough complaints, but dougz doesn't want to implement that feature, and so this seemed like the second best option.

People who were mentioned multiple times in the other thread or quoted saying obscene things (though I have not personally had experiences playing with them):
I love you
indomitable
Rambo888
Copper-nicus
lazmaster

The recent thread about decline of civility on Istropic reminds me that I would really like to have a list somewhere of the people who are rude and obscene so that I can avoid playing them.  In particular, I've had several terrible experiences with yourface.  I just had a game where ddubois was very rude (and he came up three times in the civility thread as an example of someone being particularly rude and obscene).  Could we come up with a good list of the people to avoid?

Everyone gets frustrated now and then, but people who are frequently rude, obscene, or offensive just aren't fun to play with.

nsnyder (10 seed) vs. mathguy (23 seed) in the Gardens division

mathguy wins 4-3.  All good games, first player won in all 7.

(mathguy's commentary in italics, nsnyder's in ordinary text)

Game 1: mathguy 61 - 58 nsnyder
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/07/game-20111207-171731-eabe3608.html
One of the two really close games.  Goons, alchemist, fishing village craziness...  I went alchemists and mathguy went tunnels.  Came down to who went first (I was up 3 going into his last turn and then he won by 3).  I also made a tactical error towards the end going Duchy/Tunnel on a turn (22) I should have gone Province which may have lost it for me.

I went for tunnels on turn 14 in order to help mitigate his goons. While the golds weren't all that helpful for me, it was morale boosting to get golds when he played goons.

Game 2: nsnyder 48 - 27 mathguy
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/07/game-20111207-172533-050be45d.html
Colonies game, which usually means Hoards aren't strong.  But Hoard was the key card because Sea Hag + Duke opens up a 3-pile rush strategy.  The most lopsided of the games.

Game 3: mathguy 35 - 22 nsnyder
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/07/game-20111207-173519-2f512d27.html
Mathguy opened Young Witch/Steward, and I opened Steward/Lighthouse.  I piled up a bunch of Lighthouses and trashed other things, while he went university and piled up the minions.  It was closer than the score as I could have bought a Province but went Duchy to hold out hope for a win.  The Minions mostly just ate lighthouses, but one key turn I didn't have lighthouses out.

Game 4: nsnyder 47 - mathguy 30
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/07/game-20111207-174129-b5505f5a.html
5/2 openings (we were doing matching hands after the first game) with a trading post makes for a fast high-scoring game.  I think the difference was that I had better draws on hands 3-5, and had more Salvagers.

nsnyder's early salvager was what did it. He was able to ditch his trading posts and highways for $5 each. On my $5 turns I bought silvers which weren't all that helpful.

Game 5: mathguy 73 - 61 nsnyder
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/07/game-20111207-175629-eca62283.html
Shear Goon insanity: Goons, Cities, Grand Markets, Council rooms.  Not much difference in strategy but mathguy played the tactics slightly better throughout and got a small but clear win. Although he made a tactical error mixing up buys and actions on a turn (20) where he thought he could buy all the curses and couldn't.

On turn 15 I buy the 9th city to make it a 5-4 split in my favour, with no piles gone. nsnyder and I both hesitate to buy the last city. I eventually buy it on turn 18 for the 6-4 split. I feel like this and my early council room were keys to this game.

Game 6: nsnyder 31 - 28 mathguy
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/07/game-20111207-180442-84854170.html
Very close.  Mathguy went for the risky second-to-last province and got burnt, but it could have gone either way. Interesting game where I went Throne Room + actions (but failed to buy a scheme when I should have, which was just an error, it was part of my strategy but I messed it up) and he went envoys and money.  I slowed down with greens, but not quite enough for him to pull it out.

Really cool game involving a very prescient TR-Merchant Ship combo by nsnyder. He very cleverly avoided the possibility of being crippled by thief. I was really hoping to force him to Masquerade me over a good card, because his deck was so thin and tight.

Game 7: mathguy 19 - 16 nsnyder
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/07/game-20111207-180926-96974ae2.html
Sea Hag + IGG + Garden.  Three piles and try for gardens.  They broke 5/3 for him and so he won.  I'm still not sure whether I misplayed it or got unlucky.

Note nsnyder's turn 7 embargo of the platinums; could that have changed the game? I also got an unexpected expand on turn 8. Turns 12,13,14 he buys estates, I buy gardens.

Well-played!

One of the best/most fun/most intense set of games I've ever played. Thanks!

nsnyder (10 seed) vs. jtotheonah (55 seed) in the Gardens division

nsnyder wins 4-1.  All but one of the games were quite close.

Game 1: nsnyder 59 - 55 jtotheonah
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201111/29/game-20111129-160812-6e3bf044.html
I had 5/2 and went first with Mountebanks in the build, but jtotheonah had a good comeback because I let him get all the alchemists.  Very close, he would have won if he'd had enough money for a province on his last turn.

Game 2: jtotheonah 29 - 33 nsnyder
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201111/29/game-20111129-161453-5fec0da4.html
An insane number of curse giving cards (sea hag, young witch, and mountebank).  I skipped the 4 cursers going for Jacks and then Mountebank, while jtotheonah picked up a sea hag.  A little less close than the score since jtotheonah bought the last province when down.

Game 3: jtotheonah 30 - 22 nsnyder
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201111/29/game-20111129-162124-9e8fac24.html
Lighthouse, Witch, Grand Market.  Jtotheonah bought a trading post and I didn't, which I think made the difference.  My usual theory is that you should never buy a trading post after turn 1, but with grand markets available and curses being handed out I think that was a mistake.

Game 4: nsnyder 42 - 13 jtotheonah
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201111/29/game-20111129-163033-690acf11.html
The only blowout.  Ambassadors do a number against familiars.  Ambassador+Minion = a lot of pain.

Game 5: jtotheonah 33 - 43 nsnyder
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201111/29/game-20111129-163702-b9ef240e.html
Torturer runs into tunnels.  Closer than the score makes it look, as he could have closed to within 1 on his last turn.  I think he bought a torturer not realizing what was going to happen with all my tunnels.  I played a little overaggressively assuming that he'd go for torturer when he was buying lighthouses, when he could have switched to royal seal or upgrade and I'd have been in big trouble with several tunnels and no way to activate except spies.

Fun series, thanks for the games!

What I find frustrating about the change is that it used to be that I could look at how my rating changed to get an idea of how well I played the day before, but now it doesn't work that way because it's as much a reflection on how well I played 30 days ago as it is on how I played yesterday.  So it's actually less responsive to my play rather than more responsive.

The uncertainty tweak never really made sense to me.  The reason the "variation" part was high before is just that Dominion is a high variation game.

I agree with everyone that 30 days is awful short.  Dominion is a game with very high variance.  If we're going to sunset old games it should be something more like last 1000 games or 3 months whichever is longer.

I'm not totally thrilled about the compression of the rankings.  My relative ranking hasn't changed (near the bottom of the top 100) but the number has gone from 37 to 31.  Seems like there's less info there.
