Variants and Fan Cards / Some Traits

Here are some Trait ideas I had since I was introduced to the new mechanic. Most of these predate the Weekly Design Contest about this topic, so there might be some overlap (I am writing this while the contest is still going, but am not going to publish it yet, in case someone wants to submit similar ideas). In general, I think it's surprisingly difficult to create a well designed Trait which is interesting in most games. Here is what I came up with:

Blessed
When you gain a Blessed card, take a Boon. Receive it now or at the start of your next turn.

Simple and quite obvious, I admit.

Sprawling
Trait
When you discard a Sprawling card from play, gain a Sprawling card.

Might be too swingy, but I like the premise.

Elegant
Trait
When you gain an Elegant card, +1 Action, and if it's your Buy phase return to your Action phase.

Donald X. lists some Village type Trait ideas in the Secret History, but no Villa variant.

In games using this, Duchies are also Actions with "+2 cards, you may play a Ducal card from your hand."

An attempt to make early Duchies a little bit more interesting.

When you discard a Fleeting card from play, exchange it for a card with a different name costing up to more.

Somehow the child of Butterfly and Reckless. I like it.

This might be my favourite. It was my submission for the Weekly Design contest.

When you trash a Persistent card, +2 cards, set it aside, and at the end of turn put it on the bottom of your deck.

The setting aside might be necessary to avoid loops.

When you trash a Diplomatic card, +3 Favors.
Diplomatic cards are also Liaisons.

After playing a few games with it, I changed the when-trash bonus from 2 to 3.

After your 1st shuffle: When you end your turn without having played a Sustentative card in it, discard down to 4 cards in hand.

This is my attempt of making a Gang-of-Pickpockets style Trait. I thought of a few different negative effects, but in the end I settled with the discarding (for the moment).

Setup: Move your +1 Card, +1 Action, +1 Buy, or +$1 token to this pile (when you play an Educated card, you first get that bonus). The first time you gain a Victory card, remove all your personal markers from Supply piles.

I haven't tested this one yet. At first it triggered only after buying a Victory card costing or more, then I changed it to match Cage.

da ihr euch ja schon ganz fleißig zu den Previews der Blütezeit 2. Edition austauscht, möchte ich an dieser Stelle nur kurz mitteilen, wie unsere aktuellen Zeitpläne aussehen: Wir werden (wie bei der Seaside) die neuen Karten in einem separaten Update-Pack veröffentlichen. Aktuell gehen wir davon aus, die 2. Edition sowie das Update-Pack Anfang September ausliefern zu können (unter Vorbehalt, auch hier müssen wir abwarten, wie schnell wir die US-Version an Rio Grande geliefert bekommen - wir dürfen die deutsche Version erst veröffentlichen, wenn die Originalversion draußen ist). Wir halten euch auf dem Laufenden.

Chameleon's cousin. Technically the rules don't cover Liaison as a type for landscapes, of course. You should add an Ally when playing with it (if no Ally is drawn already). I could have made it a standard Way with dividing line and 'In games using this ...' clause, but I prefer this cleaner looking version.

Technically you only have a Tavern mat at all if there's a Reserve card in the game, but that's not much of a reason.
That's not true. Miser uses the mat without being a Reserve.

If memory serves, the German version of Empires always used cardboard. It was too expensive to produce otherwise.

This in incorrect, they changed it in the last printing.

I am quite happy that I own the original metal tokens, the new ones feel really cheap.

How did you manage to play with 4 players and only having 12 Wishes?

Before playing I was afraid this would be an issue, but in reality it is very unlikely that all four players buy the event in the same round, and usually you don't want to buy it two turns in a row, so the Wishes come back to their pile quite quickly.

First time I enter the competition! This event is playtested a few times in 2 player and 4 player games and is quite interesting in my opinion. I happily take advice for a better (and maybe shorter) wording, English is not my first language.

I have tested very carefully new alchemy cards starting with principality and county.

No offense, but if I remember correctly from the German forum, you test your fan cards with your wife. I believe you, when you say you two have a great time. And that's nice.

But other people have another level of experience. People who played many 1000 games online. They might have a different point of view based on many years of playing Dominion.

And another thing: When posting cards on a board like this, you have to accept that people judge your cards based on what's established in the game already. If you make up your own rules like adding two new base cards, that's totally fine, but most people here want to play according to 'Donald's rules' and thus be able to mix and match everything.

This already existed... call a Coin of the Realm right after playing Caravan Guard on an opponent's turn, or call Duplicate after gaining a card on an opponent's turn.

Yes. Somebody pointed that out earlier. It probably never happened in my IRL games, therefore it didn't occur to me.

I think you can't - the Estate pile is still not an Action card pile.

Seaway doesn't check the pile type, you just have to gain an Action card from the pile.

Oh, right, I misremembered Seaway's wording.

No that phrase only stops the card from being moved into play. What stops the card from moving itself is apparently that it has already Lost Track of itself due to being played from an unexpected location.

Necromancer stops the played card from being moved to "in play," and that's all it stops. However! A card that for example trashes itself from play is looking for itself in play, and won't move itself if it's not there.

As the quote you quote says, it's not because it's being played from an unexpected location; it's because it wasn't moved into the play area when that happened. Vassal e.g. plays cards from an unexpected location too, but since it plays them to the play area no losing-track occurs.
Ah, thanks for that quote. Makes sense this way.

Is this a theme or machanic inquiry?

Your image in the German forum said "Punktekarte" and I assumed that was the right version. Otherwise the 4th player would have a huge disadvantage in the first round, wouldn't he?

EDIT: Oh, nevermind. I read the card wrong. In this case, the Action version probably is the more interesting one.
