Chapel Division
First 4:0 Qvist

Game 1 First 78:59
Key cards - Black Market, Bazaar, University, Envoy, Fairgrounds, Colony/Platinum

BM/Fairgrounds looks very nice, and my best record for Carny is 12 vp for each Fairgrounds, and there is Bazaar to accommodate all terminals especially Envoy, so here I go. We got Potion with $4 but for $3 I grabbed Black Market while Qvist bought Silver, which didn't really matter much since I didn't use my first Black Market play to buy any cards from it.

I got three Universities and the Bazaar split was 8:2, which I think is the deciding factor. I was lucky to pull out Mountebank from the Black Market, when Qvist later bought Familiar, and the curse split was 3:3 (Qvist trashed two). Qvist grabbed Harvest instead of University on turn 7, which was not good enough considering he would miss a few key cards. The game ended on pile (Fairgroudns/Bazaar/Wishing Well) with 4:4 Fairgrounds and 8vp each but my buy power was greater and won with 4/2 Colonies.

Game 2 First 51:45
Key cards - Lab, Nobles, Mint, Rabble

Very boring $3/$4 comparing to Lab/Nobles engine, so we both opened Silver/Silver. I spent all $6 on Nobles, whereas Qvist got Gold first and quickly bought 3 Provinces. At some point I was 1:3 Province behind but 7:1 Nobles ahead, so the total vp's were the same but my deck had better draw power. After Duchy Dance and 7 vp ahead with no +buy Qvist couldn't buy the last Province so the game ended on piles (Nobles/Duchy/Estate)

Game 3 First 50:23
Key cards - Tactician, Tournament, Steward, Haggler, Jester, Horn of Plenty

Tactician/Tournament is obvious at first glance, but Qvist admitted that he had a bad win rate with Tactician, so he opened Hagger/nothing against Tactician/nothing. My plan was executed perfectly : got Steward turn 3, played Tactician turn 4, trashed two estates and bought Gold turn 5, played Tactician turn 6, bought Province/Tournament turn 7, played Tactician turn 8, won Followers turn 9. The game was basically over after that.

Game 4 Tie 36:36
Key cards - Fool's Gold, Horse Traders, Ghost Ship, Venture, Trading Post

It's very tempting to play around Fool's Gold, which seems like the right choice with Horse Traders providing early +buy and Venture to go through the deck for more FG. I opened Silver/Horse Traders against Qvits's Fool's Gold/Horse Traders, which was the mistake. FG split was 4:6 with Qvist having more, and the last one was bought on turn 6 ! Qvist had a big advantage so I tried to grab more Ventures and it was 7:3 in the end. I was behind all the time, so I broke the PPR. Qvist bought Crossroads instead of Estate on turn 22, which let me grabbed the last Province and finished with tie. Had he bought Estate on that turn, I would never have a chance to comeback from losing.

Game 5 First 70:11
Key cards - Grand Market, Peddler, City, Expand, Moneylender, Lookout

A grand Colony game, with all juicy cards. I opened Lookout/Moneylender and Qvist chose Silver/Moneylender. My deck was trimmed very fast thanks to second Lookout, and the engine was geared up after turn 10, while Qvits flooded his deck with treasure cards. His second Moneylender was the mistake, I think.

All in all, thanks Qvist for the series.

I wish they add a card named 'Mamihlapinatapai' to Hinterlands, as the blurb from this expansion suggests.

First 4:2 pulpix

Game 1 pulpix 46:21
Early Possession for pulpix. My decision to buy Margrave on turn 5 was dubious, since clearly pulpix had Hamlet/Watchtower, but taking I think Contraband wasn't useful.

Game 2 First 33:20
Highway rush, with Council Room and University. Cellar is very nice in getting your key cards together, and there is Forge on board (costs are reduced by Highway, but that doesn't matter). I finished the game by playing all three Council Rooms and buying the last three Provinces. One thing to note is: my Potion/Cellar opening resulted in 3:1 Universities, but still 5:5 Highways. I guess it doesn't matter much in racing for $5, but it gives me necessary action for Council Room.

Game 3 First 35:33
Big Money vs TR/Nobles/Festival. The game is very close, with 4:4 Nobles. My spy managed to discard pulpix's Masquerade twice. Smuggler might be a deciding factor, since I gained one Festival and one Gold (not many $3 cards could do that). I think we should get Smuggler earlier since Nobles is on the board, but I mostly drew $4+ and bought Throne Room or Festival.

Game 4 First 38:35
pulpix admitted that he didn't see Tactician/Fool's Gold combo, and also ignored Familiar, telling me that he had to take a risk with 1:2 wins so far. He could build a better Bishop engine if he threw in some Tactician earlier, I believe.

Game 5 pulpix 35:26
This is a very good trashing lesson. I got early Chapel from Black Market and even trashed three estates in turn 8, but got beaten very bad. I got a thinner deck, but still couldn't draw Potion to keep my Alchemist engine going every turn like him (we both have one Wharf). By the time he bought Mountebank and played it right away, I knew that's the game for me. I guess it's because of Chapel I was behind in Alchemist race, and would be a mirror match if I didn't buy it.

Game 6 First 33:22
Silly game with Young Witch/Tunnel/Embassy. pulpix got a very bad draw, with all four action cards (2 YWs, 2 Embassies) in one hand, and the Tunnel split was 5:3. It is interesting to note that his Watchtowers doesn't help much, and could have been better if he used it to trash a curse, not as a bane card.

These are pretty close games, with no Crazy KC/Goons or whatever. Thanks for the friendly games, pulpix.

you can do this at most once each game.

That's not actually true! If you're clever, you can do it many times per game. Whenever you gain Mandarin, you put your treasures in play on top of the deck. For example, you could play a Black Market to play the treasures from your hand, then play a University to gain a Mandarin, putting your treasures on top of the deck, and then play more cards to draw them again.

I've never seen it done, though, takes some pretty slick combinations of cards.

Right, thanks for correcting me. Probably University/Mandarin/Black Market/ Watchtower(to draw those treasures back) ? I am not a fan of 4-card combo.

With help from Mandarin in Black Market, you can receive a full refund.

... ... and plays the Black Market again.
... ... ... getting +$2.
... ... ... drawing a Swindler, a Mandarin, and a Courtyard from the Black Market deck.
... ... ... First buys a Mandarin.
... ... ... ... putting 2 Coppers, 2 Silvers, and a Gold back on the deck (in some order).
... ... ... returning a Swindler and a Courtyard to the bottom of the Black Market deck.

It doesn't make sense to play the same treasures twice and get double money, but is definitely possible rule-wise.

Not a better example, but a notable one for me.

Quote
First plays a Loan.
... drawing and revealing 5 Tunnels and then a Copper.
... trashing the Copper.
... discarding 5 Tunnels.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.
... ... revealing a Tunnel and gaining a Gold.

Without Loan I would have a dead hand of five Tunnels next turn.
Let's see if anyone can beat this without using Golem  ;D

Talking about depletion besides Gold, there was a game with zero Silver in the supply with help from Trader. What is interesting is, my opponent played Trader to trash his Gardens, and only gained one Silver because there were no more.

This game has the most consecutive turns playing Masquerades for me. I only had 2 Masquerades, but kept chaining them from turn 3 to 13, where the chain broke in turn 14 because I drew Masquerade/Gold/Gold/Plat/Colony

Counting House/Council Room. I don't know what I bought them together; probably to use +buy from Council Room to buy copper ? Anyway, I played Council Room instead of Counting House and triggered a reshuffle, which is very bad for Counting House.

Another pair is ... Copper/Colony. both have six letters and start with Co-. To make the matter worse, I misread when I played Ambassador and sent my Colony away instead of Copper.

Finally, Throne Room/Trade Route. When you play multiple Throne Rooms, it's hard to keep track of how many actions you have left. I played at least five Throne Rooms and then Trade Route. Forgetting that I had to trash a card twice, I trashed Throne Room when I really meant to play it, and was confused where my last Throne Room went. The blue text for both cards are very similar (choose a card to trash/play twice : then a long list).

I bought 7 Cartographers so that I could draw all my good cards consistently. Unfortunately, I forgot to add 'good' cards to my deck. I only had Bishops, Border Villages, one Quarry, and one Silver.

Also, I discovered that Chancellor's effect flips your deck, not discards, after I tried Tunnel/Chancellor with no other Tunnel-activator.

Chapel division, Round 2
First 4:3 TehMop (Note that except for game1, first player won)

Game 1 - First 65:11
Governor/Goons megaturn. my opponent didn't catch on this one.

Game 2 - TehMop 52:39
I remembered that Potion/Ambassador beat Ambassador/Ambassador some times ago, but it's clearly wrong, esp with Tournament on the board. With no attack card in my deck, I couldn't catch up in time with Vineyards.

Game 3 - First 38:26
DoubleJack, obviously. The game was so fast that we didn't have a chance to trash any curse from Mountebanks.

Game 4 - TehMop 46:37
I bought Gold instead of Margrave, and I think that's why I lost. back to my bad habit of tending to spend $6+ on Gold, ignoring some action cards.

Game 5 - First 63:11
Feast/Silver vs. Salvager/Silver. Very fast Colony game. TehMop trashed Feast to gain Upgrade, which seems slow comparing to Hunting Party/Salvager.

Game 6 - TehMop 28:27
Sneaky estate. Might get a chance if I bought Duchy instead, but well ....

Game 7 - First 28:20
Nice board for the final match, with Bishop, Bazaar, Witch, Black Market, etc. I was lucky to draw three $5 hands before turn 10 while TehMop only got one. Embargo is a better opener than pawn, imo. Black Market cards didn't matter much since I already had a good Bazaars/draw engine.

Thank you TehMop for a good series. They were fast and fun. You could have won if you had better draw luck in game 7.
