Also where is the contest that McGarnacle was talking about

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?board=32.0

That's fan card creation, not kingdom design. This is a kingdom design contest.

But that's for 2014. Where's the one for 2018

I just barely made my favorite game
I named it lots of draw
Fishing village, smithy, bandit camp, den of sin, festival, wharf, fairground, hunting ground, bank, royal blacksmith
Donate, obelisk

That is my non interactive version. I made another version that is very interactive but still has the main theme of draw
Smithy, bandit camp, den of sin, festival, knights, rabble, wharf, fairground, hunting ground, royal blacksmith

Donate, pathfinding, ferry, inheritance, orchard, obelisk, tower

I would love to hear which version you think is better

Fixed Possession
Action
Cost: $6P

Take an extra turn after this one, in which all decisions are made by Lord Rattington.

If we had a contest for the worst rbci I think you might've won, because that is a rrrrrrrrrrbci

Ghost town should cost more. It's basically a lost city.
Ignoring the more detailed discussion, it's not basically a Lost City, even in the simplest terms.

When you play a Village, you end up with 1 more action than you started with (playing Village costs an action and removes a card from your hand, then you draw another card and get 2 actions).

When you play a Lost City, you end up with 1 more action and 1 more card than you started with.

When you play a Ghost Town, you end up with 1 more action than you started with (playing it removes a card from your hand but doesn't cost an action, then you draw another card and get an action). That makes it very firmly a kind of "village". not a kind of "laboratory".

I think Ghost Town is a good card, in the sense that it adds interest to the game rather than that it's mega strong. Compared with vanilla Village, it has a series of upsides and downsides which make it play very differently in practice:
  • You can play it the turn after you buy it, without waiting for a reshuffle
  • It can't be drawn dead
  • It gives its benefit at start of turn, when it's most valuable
  • It's in play for two turns, so shuffles through more slowly and can only be played at most once every other turn
  • It's no help to you on your current turn
  • It's not an action, so interactions fail with all sorts of things (throne rooms, Adventures tokens, Vassal/Herald/Golem, Ironworks/Ironmonger, and so on.)
Is it better or worse than a normal Village? That's hard to tell, and very situational. $3 seems a fair price, and in any case how often will you ever have the choice between the two?

(In any case, Ghost Town has lovely art. (-8 )

I'm pretty sure we all know that you love the art for ghost town. Personally it's not my favorite art, farmlands the best

Ghost town should cost more. It's basically a lost city.

The delayed effect is a Lost City, but the delay comes with a price (mostly by missing reshuffles/being effective only every 2nd engine turns). Lighthouse is not a Peddler, Caravan is not a Laboratory.

The question is if there should be a penalty to being a Night card as opposed to a cantrip duration action card. Action card can be trashed for benefit by Sacrifice and Zombie Apprentice, they are not skipped by Wandering Minstrel, they don't interrupt a series of cards drawn by Scrying Pool, can be Advanced, can be played before Tactician and before Haunted Forest takes effect, deliver a +Action to Ironmonger and so on. The on-buy effect of some of these Night cards should balance this out, so I would agree that Ghost Town would be bought at $4 too.

In most games I would buy it at five

You'd also buy Tunnel at five tho

I'm surprised you'd actually remember me saying that but that one I take back. I would buy tunnel at 4. But I would still buy ghost town at five.

You start with all the heirlooms and the shelters so menagerie is crazy powerful
So you open Menagerie/Menagerie because they are double-Labs with 100% probability after the first shuffle. Where's the strategic subtlety, where is the difficulty about evaluating the Kingdom?
Changing game parameters such that one card is overpowered isn't what I would call an interesting Kingdom.

But later in the game cursed gold and lucky coin make it more difficult

Dominion General Discussion / Chase's non randomized sets of 10
« on: April 22, 2018, 09:15:16 pm »
I like to make non randomized sets of 10 to play. I've made two that are absolutely brilliant.
Black market (put every kingdom card in the pile instead of 60.) bane: coin of the realm menagerie tunnel university silk road crown jester tactician fairground prince                 p&c    shltr                    use only one knight one castle and one of each split pile
You start with all the heirlooms and the shelters so menagerie is crazy powerful especially if you set it aside with prince
Combos:bm/men bm/tac bm/fair men/fair tun/tac

The other one is: ghost town menagerie bridge nomad camp silk road bazaar laboratory noble kings court city quarter

Blind Squirrel
Night-Duration
Cost: $4

At the start of your next Action phase, discard the top card of your deck.  If it is an Action, play it and +1VP.
At the start of your next Buy phase, discard the top card of your deck.  If it is a Treasure, play it and +1VP.
At the start of your next Night phase, discard the top card of your deck.  If it is a Night card, play it and +1VP.

That would be good with prince cartographer and cost reduction

37
Lucky Coin–Changeling–Potion was a good combo.

Exchange Silvers for Changelings, then trade in the Changelings so you can gain more Alchemists than you have Potions to spend.
Edge case: Transmute is in the Kingdom instead of Alchemist.

It would be such a different interaction.

38
I like lyles way better because you can just get a gold with cg and 3 coppers then donate trash everything except gold then use gold to get silver and then just go from there.

That's really slow. You want to keep at least 5 Coppers around on your first Donate, and you generally want that Donate to happen on turn 1.

I like to do donate at about turn 5 and trash every copper and every estate. My dad did the strategy that you said and I won badly because he had coppers cluttering up his deck.

39
Pooka + Donate: Buy a $5 card with Cursed Gold and then Donate before you see the Curse.

I guess the practical application of this is to play CG to buy Donate on turn 1 and then get rid of everything except 5-6 Coppers, and potentially buy a $3 on turn 2.

Shepherd + Tournament
Grab Followers, be happy about getting engine components instead of junk from it.

Okay but Shepherd/Tournament seems likely to lead to tough tactical decisions:

Hand is Shepherd, Estate, Province, Copper, Copper. Do you discard the Province or not?

I wouldn't. I want any opportunity to get a prize because they are that good. Also with follower it doesn't just get two cards from shepherd but it also helps pasture be worth more vp.

I'm afraid I don't know how in this situation I can give you the benefit of the doubt anymore.

Right now it feels like you're either:
A) a troll after all (what a riot)
B) a young guy who is genuinely bad at Dominion and who lies about winning so he won't have to admit that
C) a young guy who made up some bad fan cards and who lies about his experiences implying those were good ideas
D) someone who's intellectually incapable of drawing the right conclusions from the evidence provided, namely that the cards are bad and the strategy mentioned can't compete (edit: and that the strategy being bad implies the cards being bad)
E) both genuinely bad at the game and lucky to an unfathomable degree, enough to make himself believe he won due to a sub-par strategy
F) any combination of the above

Whoa this is going way too far. I'm not any of those things I promise. This is my first attempt to make fan cards okay. I've learned how my fan cards can be better with my future fan expansions I am going to think about what you guys have said.

Sorry, that was malinformed by me. I know too little about how matchmaking in Dominion online works, so I assumed you'd have to be losing all the time over there unless you were lucky. Should have just kept my mouth shut instead of assuming. I'll try to make up for it in the future.  :-\

It's fine. I have those days too when i just react right away without thinking.

Um. Buying Peasant, upgrading it in four steps to Teacher, then putting it on your Tavern mat four times and calling it four times has to take at least 13 turns. Probably several more, unless you do a preposterously extreme trick like Summoning a Peasant then Donating your deck.

Given Big Money wins on turn 17 or so, you need to have some really strong justification for playing Teacher so many times instead of doing something that gets you VP and ends the game quicker.

It was a really slow game, and teacher is best in slow games.

[Turn 15]
f plays a Rogue a third time.
n reveals a Copper and a Disciple.
n trashes a Disciple.
n gets 1 VP from Tomb.
n discards a Copper.

[Turn 17]
f plays a Rogue.
f gets +1 Buy (from Teacher)
n shuffles their deck.
n reveals a Peasant and a Teacher.
n trashes a Teacher.
n gets 1 VP from Tomb.
n discards a Peasant.

At least they got the Tomb points.

That reminds me when my mom would not exchange her disciples for teachers. I thought she was crazy. She also lost very badly because of it. It also drove me nuts because I couldn't exchange my fugitives for disciples.

Disciple is pretty often stronger than Teacher and it's not at all unusual in high level games to go for Disciple and not get any Teachers.

You have a good point but I won with all four tokens on different supply piles, so in that case I think teacher was better.

Let's look at this from another angle: Chase, have you ever played Dominion against someone other than your family? For example, have you tried out Dominion online? If not, I definitely recommend you do. It should help you put your strategies in a broader perspective. And even if you lose, you'll learn some new tricks to impress your family with.  :)

I play online all the time

The main reason for the $20+ cards is that lots of times when I'm playing with my parents we always have $20+ but no extra buy. So I wanted to make that less frustrating.

I may have a helpful addition to your set:

Quote
Decadence
4$
Action – Attack - Reaction

+1 Card
+1 Action
+2 Buys
---------------------------------
If another player has 3$ or more coins
unspent in their buy phase,
you may reveal this from your hand.
If you do, they either gain a card with + buy
from the supply or trash a treasure they
have in play, their choice.

Why would you reveal it because if you do you are just helping them

My opponent and I were having an extreme swindler battle with prince in the kingdom. He collided prince and swindler almost right after he got a prince. I made sure I bought a lot of cellars so that I could discard everything except for princes and swindlers so that they would collide but they never collided that whole game.
