1. Silver: pct.=87.8%, win rate with=.98, win rate wo=1.13.   Interestingly, those situations where silver is not bought does much better than when silver is  bought.  What does this mean?  I guess, think twice about buying silver if there are other good options available.  Perhaps it is generally better to buy two kingdom cards then buying that silver on your first two turns.   Does anybody else have a better interpretation of this?

My interpretation is that Silver usually a good buy, but if you can spot those relatively rare instances in which Silver is unnecessary, then you are more likely to win.  Alternatively, the games in which one doesn't buy Silver may correspond disproportionately to games where one receives at 5/2 open, thereby gaining a key $5 card without opening Silver.

Silver buys also sometimes indicate that a player has failed to hit a key $5 on their second shuffle, which can also spell doom for them.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Goko UI Issues

For me, one of the biggest culprits is Jack of All Trades.  I don't know how many times I've played a village, played JoaT, and then clicked my next action, only to realize that I've just trashed it.  One of the most stupid and infuriating things that happens to me, and completely avoidable with good UI

Game Reports / Watchtower + Rats = Lab Rats
« on: May 07, 2013, 12:36:14 am »
I just played the following board on goko:

Poor House
Pawn
Hermit
Watchtower
Fortress
Nomad Camp
Rats
Library
Stables
Vault

Bascially, the idea was to use Rats to clear out my copper, making Poor house into a terminal +$4.  Hermit was used to clear out a few Rats, but Fortress + Watchtower was quite effective at mitigating them: I could reveal a Watchtower to trash the Rats as I gained them, then trash Fortress to the Rats.  Net result: Rats acting as Laboratories.  My final engine wasn't as efficient as it could've been (I only lined up a 4 Poorhouse -> 2 Province turn once), but 5 Provinces in 13 turns was enough for the win.  Here's the log:

Dominion General Discussion / Re: My Stupider Project: Dominicon
« on: April 23, 2013, 02:50:55 am »
I agree with others that the apple icon is unnecessarily confusing, a card icon would work better.  For actions, I think an 'A' inside a circle would be be much easier to remember for any language where the equivalent of 'Action' starts with 'A'.  Since some cards already use letters, it doesn't seem like that's a design constraint for you.

Yeah, I also can't think of a good reason for fairgrounds.

I'm sorry to hear that Adama has turned rather trollish.  I remember playing a few matches with him about a year ago, and it was pleasant enough, though things did not come out well for humanity   ;)

Workshop is one that I think many players first over-buy (filling they're decks with terminals, for example), then with some experience under-buy (not noticing when it can accelerate an engine deck), before finding a good balance.

Spy is another one that I think many beginning players buy too often.

I played this pretty terribly on the whole, but I just had a Gardens game in which I played KC-KC-Bureaucrat-Bureaucrat-Bureaucrat

Extra WTF points for using Scrying Pool to set it up...because SP *loves* tons silver ;)

I don't see any reason not to include it on the list...if you want the ranking without silver, you can easily remove that data and run the analysis that way, whereas the reverse is not true.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: "Most hated" dominion cards discussion
« on: December 03, 2012, 04:22:17 pm »
I don't hate Ambassador nearly as much as I used to, but I still don't particularly care for the card.  It many games, it simply introduces a "pre-game" tug-of-war, with the player who wins that battle going to on to smother their opponent.

I do, however, find it quite satisfying to correctly skip Ambassador and win on the few games where it's best to leave it alone.

another factor to take into account: a number of the top players haven't played recently. this might make some of them a little rusty, but it also leads to their variance increasing which brings the level down. i wonder how the groups would look if we looked at just their mean skill ratings? all of that data should be in the entrants spreadsheet.

I think this is definitely a factor.  I certainly wouldn't include myself in the top players group, but I hadn't played on iso in a while, and it was mainly luck that I happened to check the site while registration was still open.  I just started playing again on Friday to get back in the swing of things, so my variance is around 10-12 instead of a more typical (for me) 8-9.

Gardens looks tough, but Witch seems brutal...with WW, olneyce, and Marin all in there...that gets the "I'm glad I'm not in that bracket" award from me.

Dominion Articles / Re: Scrying Pool
« on: June 29, 2012, 03:58:49 pm »
A good start, but article does have a few problems.  First of all is your comment about the lack of villages...there are many good cantrip-oriented scrying pool decks out there.  Now if you're missing both a village *and* good cantrip possibilties then you've got a problem, but lack of a village alone is not necessarily a reason to skip SP.

As already mentioned, SP can do very well with chapel as long as there's +buy available.  Certainly fast decks are a problem for SP though.

For completeness, the article should also talk about the combo opportunities presented by the deck-peeking attack.  Since you're often playing a few SPs per turn, you can set up some pretty nasty attacks...jester is probably the strongest among such combos, but swindler and (if your opponent is going with a BM-ish strategy) even pirate ship can be quite good as well.

Another thing worth mentioning is that you *will* fall behind early when playing against a non-SP deck.  If you're going SP, you usually want to wait on greening even if you're starting to get nervous about your opponent...with a good SP deck, once you start getting to the payoff, the payoff is big.  On the other hand, premature greening can easily stop an SP deck from ever getting off the ground.  It can be nerve-wracking, but patience is key to success here.

There's also "What do you mean, if I passed a card?  You just told me to.  Why would I ever not?" which takes new players quite a long way off course.

That's a wording that already appears on a number of other cards though.

Semifinalists will compete against each other.  The Day 1 semifinalists will play 4 games against each other, and so on.

I have contacted the Day 1 and Day 2 semifinalists.

Did you contact everyone?  I didn't receive anything from you.

Ok, this may fall under "yet another ridiculous power game", but I'm posting it simply for the fact that I purchased two curses at the end for the reason that the copper stack was empty.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Gg etiquette
« on: June 14, 2012, 05:17:22 pm »
Yeah, I consider gg from the winner to be rude when the game was actually a blowout.  It may only be a minority of the time that it's actually intended sarcastically, but far more often it simply indicates the person is following a rote script rather than actually showing consideration for their opponent.  Taking the time to actually write something appropriate to the game at hand, whether "close one", "rough luck there", or simply "thanks for the game", is far more courteous in my opinion, and if that's too much trouble I think leaving silently is at worst no worse than an ill-considered 'gg'.

In terms of feedback, to me by far the most important improvement to be made in the process is communication.  I've found the disorganization and lack of communication around the qualifier events to be very frustrating...with no centralized source of information of qualifying tournaments, spotty announcements if any about when and where they are held, and no page for potential organizers of events.

By far the biggest improvement in my mind would be a decently run website that acts as an information source for both players and tournament sponsors.  Beyond that, I'd suggest requiring all events to be scheduled (as in having a date set, not actually holding the event) by a certain period of time (say 6 months) before the overall championship.  Although this might somewhat reduce the number events, it would allow a fixed schedule of qualifying events to be published, which would be a major improvement over what we had this year.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The term "multiplayer"
« on: June 09, 2012, 08:41:45 pm »
Also, even in a video gaming context, "multiplayer" these days almost always refers to several people.  If a new shooter comes out, if one asks "will it offer multiplayer mode?", 9 times out of 10 they mean online play involving several people, not split-screen play with two people.  Although 2 player modes still get lumped in with multiplayer at times, often others terms will be used...for example I've never heard of Portal 2 being described as having a multiplayer support, instead it's almost always referred to as a "co-op mode" or "2 player co-op".
