Dominion Articles / Re: Etiquette in Dominion Online
« on: January 20, 2018, 03:19:27 pm »
I mean, I've been reading a lot about what is seen as courtesy about undoes on the forum and it surprises me a little that two people can say "you did wrong" without even explaining why on issues like these. Why have undoes as a choice if it's so clearly wrong to deny something that will cause you to loose?

Because sometimes people are working on a small screen, or have a jumpy internet connection, or for any number of reasons they obviously misclick. You did wrong because you knew it was a misclick and that your opponent had played better than you, so you did something that you knew was unsportsmanlike because you wanted to win regardless.

Did I wrong? I mean, from isotropic I learnt that misclics is part of Dominion Online in one way or another. Don't play careless. Most mistakes don't effect the opponent directly and is easy to grant, but this one, man.. I really wish it wasn't there, in what situation do you not want to reveal the gold?

Dear opponent, I'm sorry. I hope I don't have to do it again, but honestly I think I would've..

Yeah you did wrong and you're obviously not sorry.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Prosperity Cards: Loan
« on: January 07, 2018, 09:58:35 pm »
I like Loan best when I can trash it later in the game. Opening Loan/Salvager and trashing it for $3 later on is a pretty sweet deal.

Sometimes a Bandit trashes my Loan and I am thankful.

Navigator/Loan is pretty amazing too. Same goes for Cartographer. Really anything that allows it to skip past your junk and avoid colliding with non-Copper treasures.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Revised versions of published cards

Buying Silver is often bad, but free Silver? Woohoo! Like seriously if you're building an engine that's shaky enough that adding 1 Silver is bad then you should just not buy any Fate cards or build a better deck.

It's really easy to wind up with too much Silver in Nocturne, especially with Lucky Coin.

I actually like that you're forced to take it, but more Silver is not always ideal.

Actually, Swamp's Gift doesn't have a "may" for the Wisp gain either. How come no one complains about that?

Silver is bad for engines but cantrips that sometimes become Laboratories are pretty much always good.

Monastery has that wrinkle whereby if you gain more cards, you can trash more cards, though. (And that can give counterintuitive outcomes. For example, with two Monasteries in play it can be worth buying an extra Copper in order to be able to trash two extra Coppers! In other news, my experience so far has been that two Monasteries turned out to be at least one too many.

All this. Monastery being the way it is also makes gainers more attractive.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Nocturne Cards: Cursed Village

A Cursed Village is wonderful when you're Lost in the Woods. Discarding for a boon at the start of your turn means at least +3 Cards +2 Actions. The draw is even better if you receive Earth's Gift or Sky's Gift.

Great against Militia, Goons, and similar discard attacks, but has negative synergy with Faithful Hound, the River's Gift, Plague, Caravan, Wharf, Gear, or anything that lets you start your turn with more than 5 cards.

It's been incredibly useful in most of the games I've played with it, but no one buys enough of them because they're afraid of the Hexes. Locusts, War, and Miserable can be especially painful.

85
Last night I learned Idol is a double-edged sword against Possession. You want to possess my deck? I have 4 Idols, so a Province comes with 2 Curses.

Unfortunately Sun's Gift and Moon's Gift can absolutely wreck my next turn :-\

86
Pasture is a great steal.

87
Leprechaun/Storyteller has a great thematic interaction. Leprechauns are so much nicer in stories! Nothing but good luck, gold, and wishes come true.

88
Night cards ruin Vassal.

Except Werewolf. Werewolf's cool.

89
Rats has a ton of great interactions with Nocturne.

Rats/Exorcist - Exorcist is terrible at trashing Copper and Curses, but trashing Rats gives you Imps
Rats/Necromancer - Zombie Apprentice gives you +4 Cards and an Action, Zombie Mason +1 Card, Gain a card costing up to $5
Rats/Changeling Trash a card, gain a Changeling

Rats also protects you against some of the nastiest hexes. War just draws you an extra card, and Locusts draws you a card and gains you an Action costing $2 or $3.

Then there's just a bunch of trashing options to help keep them from getting out of control: Bats and the Flame's Gift are great, and worst case scenario your Goat can eat Rats and hopefully draw you an extra treasure or Night card.

Tracker > Bard

Considering some of the Boons gain Gold, Silver, or Will-O-Wisps (basically Laboratories in the early game), Tracker's topdecking ability is way more valuable to me than $1 extra from Bard.

I had the same thing happen when I first bought the game. All the cards were new to us and everyone bought and played Fool constantly, making the game last forever.

Since we've gotten used to the cards we don't seem to buy Fool nearly as often, and when we do turns go much faster because we're used to all the Boons and can more quickly decide the best order to receive them.

EDIT: All I'm really saying is that the randomness of the bonus is just that - random. It may or may not benefit you. And as such be careful when you are putting yourself in a position where you are relying on the bonus. (Which can be said about any Fate card.)

The big lesson I've internalized playing Nocturne is fate often pays off, which makes skipping Boons is a serious risk. I've played games where I skip Bard due to lack of reliability, only to allow my opponents to get the upper hand with early trashing, cycling, Gold, Will O' Wisps, free $4 cards, etc.

If you don't want to leave your deck up to fate then you don't have to, but random magic is going to occasionally help your opponents.

Buy Shepard and victory cards.

94
Changeling + Potion Cards is madness. You can trash your potion nice and early and keep gaining Familiars, Alchemists, Possessions, etc.

95
Another fun Nocturne/Dark Ages combo: Knights + Necromancer

Undead Knights are relentless. They can't be killed and have no allegiance to anyone.

96
Counterfeit + Idol

Play Idol #1 - Accept a Boon
Play Counterfeit
Play Idol #2 twice and trash it - Everyone takes 2 Curses
Play Idol #3 - Everyone takes another Curse

97
I think it's cool that heirlooms are really hard to steal and impossible to recover once they've been trashed. Cursed Gold is the only one that can return from the grave to bring misfortune to someone new.

98
Thief/Heirlooms

Thief is way more fun when you can steal Magic Lamps, Pastures, Goats, etc. Just be careful about trashing your opponent's Haunted Mirror.

99
Bureaucrat can really screw over Shepard sometimes. Also it's fun getting Changelings instead of a Silver.

Cobbler/Cost Reduction, gainers usually work great with Cost Reduction, Cobbler unfortunately does not... (And luckily I discovered this againg Lord rat...)
Feel victim to this literally 5 minutes after reading this :(  Tried to set up a Native Village / Highway / Cobbler megaturn.

Get some Ghosts next time.
