Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion 2019 Errata and Rules Tweaks
« on: September 27, 2019, 01:48:11 pm »
The main change here is that previously you'd lose track of something if it were covered up in your discard pile, and now you don't. So for example if you Replace an Estate into Skulk, previously you would lose track of the Skulk when you gained a Gold and covered it up, but now you won't, you will put the Skulk onto your deck.

I'm pretty sure using Replace as the example here doesn't work, since it top-decks the Skulk.

"You can gain non-Supply cards when called out"

I'm not a fan of this change, because it creates an extra rule that doesn't seem to be needed. Before you had to know that "gain" meant from Supply except if stated otherwise. "From its pile" is stating it otherwise, so to me it's sufficient. We still need that rule because of cards like e.g. Noble Brigand, Exorcist and Tournament. But now we need this other rule too.

About the new "stop-moving" rules. Read literally, since it doesn't mention keeping or losing track, it now seems that a card that is moved and then put back, CAN be moved. This would be a change from the old lose-track rule. For instance Prince a Duplicate; start of turn it goes to the Tavern, then call it that same turn, Prince sets it aside.

Looking back at the changes today, the one thing I feel like, why did I do that, is renaming "lose track" to "stop moving." The people who know "lose track" by name don't get anything out of this, and when we talk about "where a card expects to be," saying "it loses track" is still natural, even though everybody knows where the card is.

Why can't you change it back to "lose track"? Have you printed this somewhere?

Oh boy, huge changes in rules.

As others have noted, Death Cart, Embargo and Pillage are changed, but there are many others that were untouched. Previously those three cards worked normally with BoM/Overlord/Inheritance, and were super-good with Necromancer/Captain. To avoid too much super-goodness, Donald changed them, so now they are useless with BoM/Overlord/Inheritance AND with Necromancer/Captain (except Death Cart is gimped but not useless).

The cards that were untouched: Acting Troupe, Farmers' Market, Feast, Knights, Tragic Hero, Wine Merchant, Encampment, Experiment, Island. These are all super-good with BoM/Overlord/Inheritance now (except Island) - in addition to with Necromancer/Captain.

Some cards used to be normal with Bom/Overlord/Inheritance, and useless with Necro/Captain, but are now useless with all: Mining Village, Pixie, Treasure Map, Urchin, Page, Peasant, Distant Lands, Prince (only gimped: Raze, Small Castle)
(Obv. Small Castle can't be played with Inheritance, and Prince requires a lot of cost reduction)

EDIT: Knights were in the wrong list!
EDIT2: Distant Lands was always useless with these cards.

Of course this means that both Miser and Hireling are great cards for the game, meaning that they are great designs. Because it's not always obvious whether to go for them.

I'm just using BCW 550 count boxes. I sleeve all the cards with the flimsy type sleeves, and use some simple custom dividers. Every set fits into one of these boxes, with all the bits (although I had to cut the trash mat).

Hinterlands, with only 300 cards and no extra bits, has extra space which I use for extra base cards (the Base Cards "expansion").

The three small sets (Alchemy, Cornucopia and Guilds) fit into one box, also including all the promos and the coin tokens from Guilds, but it's getting tight. I don't have the latest two promos, so I'm not sure if they woud fit.

Sleeving is highly recommended. I started sleeving when there were only 1600 cards to sleeve, and then have done it as each set comes out. (Now there are 4223 cards to sleeve, if you only have one set of base cards and don't sleeve randomizers).

Rules Questions / Re: Fleet extra turns
« on: August 27, 2019, 09:01:35 am »
Say an extra round starts with player A. Player A has bought Fleet, and player B, to his left, hasn't. If player A, during his Fleet turn, Possesses player B, then has him buy Fleet during the Possession turn, will player B end up getting his Fleet turn, or is it too late for that?
Going by the card wording, I'm calling it too late.

(And a BGG account is free and recommended.)

I guess it was inaccurate in a different way; since it failed to mention that the Stash itself needs to be among the shuffled cards for its ability to do anything. I misread what you were saying at first.

That's true, and the 2nd edition actually corrected that inaccuracy. But it was a purely technical inaccuracy, nobody actually thought you could take all the Stashes in the game and put them in your deck whenever you shuffle. The new one can potentially create confusion.

1086
I think he means when compared to regular draw like Smithy. Smithy + Star Chart is weaker under the new rule, while Library + Star Chart is the same.

Then it would be more accurate to say that Smithy is gimped when combined with Star Chart, which is true even without comparing to Library.

Wasn’t first edition Stash already inaccurate in the same way? Both editions play as if they actually refer to shuffling a set of cards with Stash itself in it, don’t they?

The first edition was not inaccurate since it didn't refer to looking at any card.

1087
It indirectly buffs Library, Hunting Party, and other cards that reveal as you draw, when combined with Star Chart.

I don't see how the rules change makes a difference there. You shuffle at the same time anyway, and have seen all the revealed cards.

1088
At the time Dominion 2nd edition came out, it was only Stash. After that we have had Nocturne and Renaissance. It sounds right that it would be only Star Chart.

As you note, Stash was changhed, but actually it's not entirely accurate now. It doesn't take into consideration the cards Annex, Donate, Famine and Inn. Normally you shuffle your discard pile, not your remaining deck, but those cards let you shuffle your remaining deck. So Stash literally says you get to look through your deck before placing Stash in it, which is not the case. Maybe it would be better to keep the old wording on Stash, and have it work the same way as Star Chart. But maybe the thought is that Stash would get too weak. It's already so weak though that I'm not sure it would make much of a difference.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Interview with Donald X.

Any specific reason why "under/on this" (as seen on Crypt, Cargo Ship, Research, 2E Gear and 2E Haven) is dropped from Church? Just space problems?

I find the phrase a bit problematic, because it somewhat muddies the distinction between "cards in play" and "cards set aside". There might also be some confusion of what happens with Procession + Gear, because now there is no "under this" anymore. (I know that the set-aside cards stay.)

EDIT: Thanks to Spineflu - Research and Cargo Ship say "on this"

1090
After Church and Captain release we have exactly 10 promos. What do you think about the kingdom made out of them?

( 3 ) Black Market, Church
( 4 ) Dismantle, Envoy, Walled Village
( 4|5 ) Sauna/Avanto
( 5 ) Stash, Governor
( 6 ) Captain
( 8 ) Prince

You open Black Market (for the attack) and Church. You try to get Captain as soon as possible. Every card could possibly have a place (some of them maybe only through Captain), except I don't know if there will be time for Prince. And of course you skip Stash. Governor might dominate.

1091
The impact of that is I was generally connecting Highway-Captain around turn 8 or 9. Whereas Captain-Bridge was connecting on turns 4-5.

I might be missing something here, but don't you need a village to play Captain and Bridge in the same turn? The idea is to play BoM with the Captain, right? How can this happen on turn 4? Even without the Village, how can you draw both Bridge and Captain on turn 4? Assuming you spent the three first turns buying Ferry, Captain and Bridge, either the Bridge or the Captain is not shuffled in yet, right?

I don't see why you would actually buy Bridge... you play Captain to play Bridge. At the start of next turn, Bridge is played again, for free, so on that turn you can just play Captain to play BoM, back and forth. You do need 2 Captains though.

Right. I was thinking that "connecting" means connecting Captain and Bridge. So, with Ferry + Captain, you can play Captain on turn 3 and buy another Captain. You need to play the Captain as something that gets you through your deck (Smithy, Warehouse) I guess, in order to play the second Captain on turn 4. You then start turn 4 playing Bridge.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Captain and Church

Are these free? How long do I have them? I'm not sure I even have them now, I've set them as cards I "like" but they never show up.
My account shows the expiry date for the sets, but does not mention the promos...

1094
Of course Haven and Gear do the same thing, being better/worse in different ways. I guess these can be called Haven variants.

1095
I'm kind of confused about this. The wording is ambiguous as to when the "leave it there" instruction actually applies. "Leave it there" obviously applies before you follow any of the card's instructions, because thing it's negating is the moving of the card into your play area. But does it continue to apply during the period when you're following the card's instructions? Because that's when the trashing of Death Cart etc actually happens. You could make the argument that it does, but based on the wording alone, I think you could also make the argument that it doesn't.

This also came up with Necromancer. It only means that you don't put it in play as part of playing it. When you're resolving it, everything works as normal. There is no ongoing effect of that clause. So you can play Workshop to gain a Workshop (which happens to be itself), or play Lurker to trash a Lurker (which happens to be itself).

(When you get to trashing Death Cart, that fails because the Death Cart isn't in play, where it's expected to be.)

1096
An early Forge, in the absence of other good trashing, can be game-deciding.

1097
Maybe a weird question, but are these cards one or two promos? I mean, are they released in one pack or are they separate? I guess this could be different when they are given as free promos and when they are later sold on BGG...

1098
Do you gain them?  I'd imagine it would work like Masquerade.  Or is that why the "quotes"?

Yes, that's why I used quotes. It would be like Masquerade. The phrase "and hence not gained" should also be fixed to something like "and hence would not be yours".

1099
The official(?) FAQ on the wiki is also confused about this:

Quote
The "leaving it there" clause takes priority over effects of the card being played that move it. Thus Reserve cards are not moved to your mat (and hence not gained). Similarly, Acting Troupe and Death Cart are not trashed.

This is wrong. "Leaving it there" means that the played card doesn't move to your play area when played, which has implications for all cards. It does not refer to "effects of the card being played that move it". Without the clause, you would actually "gain" all cards you played, not just Reserve cards.

Many of the "tempo" trashers seem to do well off the BM. This includes Butcher, Junk Dealer, Sentry, Masquerade, Counterfeit, and Recruiter, among others. The trashers that don't do so well include Forager, Remake, Sacrifice, Spice Merchant, Raze. It's an odd pattern.

I noticed that all the trashers that do well, except Masq, cost $5. The ones that don't do well, cost less. I have no idea what that means. I was going to say opportunity cost, but then I would expect it to be the reverse.
