Simulation / Re: Improvement on BankWharf
« on: November 24, 2011, 12:37:11 pm »
Is it not better to optimize the simple strategies that we're comparing things to though? I get that we want things to be simple, but we're likely going to be tweaking whatever scripts we're building to optimize so shouldn't the default comparison scripts also be optimized?

Simulation / Improvement on BankWharf
« on: November 23, 2011, 07:28:23 pm »
I often tend to buy Duchies at 4 instead of 5 and was wondering how that simulated. Interestingly it improved on BankWharf in Province games and Colony games (though only very slightly in Colony games). It did not improve the DoubleJack algorithm.

Code: [Select]
# Play Big Money including Banks, except buy Wharf with every $5 buy.
# This differs from Geronimoo's BankWharf in that Duchies are bought
# when there are only 4 Provinces left, instead of when there are only 5 left.

I love that these all have little lessons in them.

Is it possible for the code to be changed for something like if someone has forfeited over half their games and if they have played more than X games then any games they play will be excluded from the rankings? Or can administrators just manually bump people who are clearly gaming the rankings from the leaderboard on a case by case basis?

2011 / Tournament size and time length
« on: November 21, 2011, 04:43:50 pm »
How big were you guys planning this tournament to be and how long should people plan to be in it for? I don't think it'll be an issue for me, but if someone is planning to travel they might need to take that into account when registering.

I ask because with the numbers of registrants at this point if there's a week for each match this might be a month and a half long tournament (or longer).

That might just be because the script plays X games per day, and now that Kretin is at the bottom of the leaderboard it's about the same gain for Karumah per game.

possibly, but yesterday is the only day he played a round number.  his game totals working back to his starting point are: 200, 154, 192, 104, 48, 38. no real pattern to that set that i can see. it might be nothing, it just seemed too coincidental to me.

He's probably just doing something like turning a bot script on and then turning a bot script off, which would account for the lack of patterns in his game totals.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Alternate Newbie First Board?

You could replace the Mine with the Trading Post. It has similar principles but it showcases trashing in a much more effective manner. One thing I find frustrating about the first game is that there isn't anything that lets you immediately learn about the benefits of trashing. Trading Post is one of the best trashers to showcase the benefits of trashing without being confusing (Remodel and Mine are usually just too slow to really show it well, and Chapel is just confusing for new players who usually just see it as a counter for Witch).

Other Games / Re: What other games are as good as Dominion?
« on: November 18, 2011, 05:05:36 pm »
I really like a lot of the games mentioned in this post. Puerto Rico especially is exceptionally well balanced and really fun. I played it with a group of friends fairly obsessively before discovering Dominion.

I have to mention Galaxy Trucker, which is really fun, and a lot of the game play is based in real time. You build a space ship and then go on trucking missions. The game is fairly luck dependent, but it has some deep strategy and lots of puzzle solving so strong players usually end up ahead of their competitors. It takes under an hour to play and it's a really fresh board game idea. I can't recommend it enough.

Cache is pretty awesome in the right situations, and by that I probably mean Gardens games.

I'm not going to deny that all of the card in Dominion are good in some situations. I mean remember rrenaud's use of the Explorer in this old gem he played against theory?

All Dominion cards have their uses at the right time, but I'd say Cache is one of those cards that buying usually benefits your opponent more than it benefits you.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: New Promo Governor
« on: November 18, 2011, 02:14:30 pm »
It takes a while to get going, but Governor/Minion is a pretty deadly combo.  It's a lot of $5 cards to amass, so it probably doesn't go fast enough against stiff competition.  But playing it sure was fun.  If you draw a Governor or two, you can construct massive hands, play all your minions (and hopefully a non-terminal +buy), and then Minion away all the cards you gave to your opponent.

And if you don't draw your Governors, you can use Minion to take you to them.

Another benefit to its synergy with Minion is that it actually helps you get rid of your silvers (those pesky things you need to get to the Minions in the first place) and uncluttering your deck, while replacing them with Minions. Though there is the downside of buying a Governor means you're behind one Minion if you're in a race for them, but if you get to do this once before the Minions run out you should catch up if not pull ahead on the Minions and be in a better position when they've run out.

For the record, I do not think the governor is in the bottom five 5s.

I'd agree with that. And to back that up I'd offer these stats from Council Room's Popular Buys:
Win Rate with 1.01 ± 0.01
Win Rate without 0.98 ± 0.02

It's a little tricky to use Governor properly, but the benefits to you still greatly outweigh the benefits to your opponents. The gain Gold ability and the trash for Remodel are greatly better for you than they are for your opponents.
Each of the abilities is better for you than your opponents, with the possible exception of... the trashing one, where often you'd want to use it to turn estate into silver or copper/curse into nothing. It's not that it's really all that terrible, it's more just... not that great. It's gotta be worse than say jester, which while being a quite decent card, isn't really anything spectacular.
And so if it's not in your bottom 5... what is?

Cache, Stash, Mandarin, Explorer, Counting House (not necessarily in that order)

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Veto strategy
« on: November 17, 2011, 06:44:40 pm »
I tend to veto cards that are highly luck based like Treasure Map, Tournament (though not all the time) and Black Market or cards that I just find to be unfun (Saboteur, and  Possession, mostly, but sometimes Familiar).

If none of those types of cards are in I often just veto randomly or veto the card I think is least likely to be bought by anyone (Chancellors, Explorers, Libraries with no deck hand attacks, Vineyards with no plus buys, etc.)

What if you just bought Estates/Stewards/Pirate Ships and end the game on piles? It's not a fun or quick way to end the game, but you have enough money in your deck to buy Estates at this point and buying more Stewards and Pirate Ships would allow you to continue it.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Province vs Colony

One word:  Tournament.

I don't think this would actually work in a pure (Tournaments, plus Prizes) way. Even with the added benefits of a Trusty Steed or Followers you're going to have a really tough time finishing the game when you're all bogged down with green, while your opponent racks up points with a colony engine. If your opponent can get to five colonies (50 points) before you get all eight provinces (48 points) you are in trouble. I'm mostly just speaking from my gut though, I tend to ignore Tournaments (or just treat them as any other Cantrip) in Colony games.

You can counter this by getting Duchies, but this is just going to make finishing the game fast even tougher as you'll end up with even more garbage hands.

I can think of two situations where I went for Provinces and think it was a good idea to go for Provinces over Colonies.

The first and probably most likely situation to do this was a Curse game that looked like it was going to end on piles before either of us could get to Colonies.

The second was a game where I had a super turn and could end the game by buying up the Provinces, but wouldn't have been able to afford the Colonies and end it.

Are there other situations that people can think of?

In a Prosperity game (ie. one with Platinums and Colonies) is it ever worth it to try and rush the game and go for Provinces instead of waiting until you can hit $11 and go for Colonies? It's something I've always wondered about. I've tried it on a few specific boards with mixed success, but was wondering how the forum would weigh in on this.
